Worksheet

Please complete the following worksheet in the space provided. Answer questions fully,
but concisely. If more space is needed attach an addendum to the back of the report (this
may also be necessary for figures). Work and/or reasoning needs to be clearly shown for
the following questions. Partial credit is given for relevant physics concepts discussed in
your answers to these conceptual questions. Circle your final answers if applicable.
Section 3
1. (1/2 point) How does the direction of the magnetic field relate to the direction of the
flux? Does the induced current depend on the flux, or the change in flux? How can
you tell? Use the galvanometer measurements to corroborate your answers.

2. (1/2 point) Why does the magnet take longer to fall through the copper tube than
the aluminium piece? What is happening in the tube to exert a force?

3. (1 point) You should have sufficient information to verify Lenzs Law. Specifically
citing the polarity of the magnet, winding of the coil, and signs of your voltage
measurements verify the negative sign seen in Eq. 3.

4. (a) (1/2 point) Whats being generated by the primary solenoid thats inducing voltage in the secondary one? In what way is this process similar to that which you
observed in Sec. 4? What role does the AC generator signal play and what is
it analogous to in the case of the solenoid and bar magnet? Do you think the
inductive process is the same?

(b) (1 point) When is the voltage of the secondary solenoid maximum and what
is the corresponding signal voltage? How does the response of the secondary
solenoid differ for the two different signals in the primary solenoid? Derive and
verify the relationship between the voltage of the secondary and current of the
primary.

(c) (1/2 point) How does the magnitude of the induced voltage compare to the previous observations made with the iron core present; is the magnitude greater
or smaller? Explain what characteristic of the iron core could cause such a
difference.

6. (3 points) Analysis
Section 5.1
Determine resistance ratio:

Rtot,1
Rtot,2

and uncertainty.

Determine measured s and uncertainties from fitted parameters.

Determine ratio:

1
2

and uncertainty.

Given L is fixed, show the relationship between these ratios. Verify this with a
quantitative comparison. Does s dependence on R agree with Eq. 5?
With knowledge of the circuits total resistance determine the inductance value
of the inductor; does it agree with the labelled value (quant. compare)?
Derive relationship between steady state voltage(t >> ) of the inductor and
the resistances in the circuit (as well as the applied voltage). Calculate values
for the voltage for both resistors.
Determine steady state voltage from both plots fitted parameters and verify the
expected values.
Section 7
Determine values from fitted parameters (with/without core).
Determine inductance values (with/without core).
7. (1 point) Discussion
Briefly answer the following:
Is the inductance value different than in the absence of the iron core? What about
the iron core may have changed this value? How does the magnetic field passing
through the solenoid relate to its inductance? Keep in mind how the geometry of
the solenoid differs from that of the inductor circuit component (area, number of
turns of wire, etc.), how might this affect the value of inductance? What does this
suggest is the origin of inductance?
