IBPS PO CWE 2014 Analysis

The LEADER in Online Test Prep

The IBPS PO CWE for recruitment to 21 nationalised banks was held in the online format over 6 days
11th, 12th, 18th, 19th October and 01st and 02nd November 2014. This exam saw a change in the paper
structure with the descriptive test being scrapped and different sections having different number of
questions.
The paper comprised 200 questions to be solved in 2 hours. Like previous IBPS PO exams, there were
five sections in all
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Quantitative Ability
Reasoning
English Language
General Awareness (with specific focus on the Banking industry)
Computer Awareness

However, unlike previous exams, where each section had 40 questions, the number of questions per
section and marks per section varied in this case. All the sections, except English Language, were
available bilingually i.e. in both English and Hindi. Overall the paper was more or less on standard
lines and a substantial number of questions could have been attempted by the well-prepared student.

Quantitative Aptitude
This section was of moderate to high difficulty level. It had a judicious mix of arithmetic, number
series and data interpretation. The weightage on general arithmetic and quantitative questions was
slightly greater, with 20 questions being from this area. These were a mix of simple to moderate
questions, and covered general concepts in Arithmetic such as profit and loss, time and work,
mixtures, problems on ages and simple and compound interest, time, speed & distance comprising
trains, boat and streams. This section also had questions on number series, data sufficiency, geometry,
data interpretation comprising line graph, bar graph, pie chart and tables & Caselets, etc. The Data
Interpretation questions were very calculative (like SBI PO) and involved large numbers.
On the whole, a well-prepared student could have attempted 22-27 questions in 30 minutes.

Reasoning:
The reasoning section was of moderate difficulty level. The section had typical LR question types such
as linear and circular arrangements, complex arrangements, sequential output tracing, data
sufficiency, codes, inequality and syllogisms. This section also had Critical Reasoning questions: a
strengthening argument question, a course of action question and a negating argument question. All
CR questions were very easy and unambiguous. A well-prepared student would find this section time
consuming but fairly manageable. Students could have attempted 24-28 questions in 30 minutes.

English Language
This section was of easy to moderate difficulty level. The question types were exactly the same as
those of previous years. There were 2 Reading Comprehension passages of about 600 words each
with some words in bold. These consisted of slightly heavy material. Each passage had ten questions,
consisting of a good mix of direct, inference-based and vocabulary-based questions. The other types of
questions besides the RCs were jumbled sentences (with the first sentence fixed), a cloze passage with
ten blanks, and correct/incorrect sentences with a highlighted phrase to be replaced. The jumbled
sentences question was extremely easy and had 5 sub-questions. The cloze passage, too, was very
easily solvable. There were 5 correct/incorrect sentences, all dealing with basic aspects of grammar. A
well-prepared student could have easily attempted 28 - 32 questions in 30 minutes.

General Awareness
Like always, the focus in this section was on banking and areas related to it. Nearly 60% of this section
was based on questions on banking terms, products, RBI notifications and news, economy, corporate
sector and government initiatives. A good grasp of current affairs in this area would have helped
tremendously. Some of the other areas from which questions were asked included sports, literature,
trivia and international news. A well-prepared student could have easily attempted 21 - 24 questions
in 20 minutes.

Computer Awareness
This section was easy and comprised questions on the knowledge of frequently-used applications
such as Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), Networking, Basic Hardware and Software, DBMS,
Internet. A candidate well-versed in the fundamentals of day-to-day computing could easily score well
in this section. On the whole, a student could have attempted 14 - 16 questions in around 10 minutes.
