2.1 CHECKING PC SPECIFICATION AND BROWSER SETTINGS

The basic configuration of your PC is checked by the Eikon for Wealth Management System Test utility.
It performs a check of the PC configuration and software setup on the PC, and advises users on resolving
issues that are found during checks. The System Test can also generate reports that can be sent
automatically to the Thomson Reuters Support Centre.

System Test
Access to System Test is via the Eikon for Wealth Management product login page. A simplified
Standalone System Test is available in order to enable a basic check to be completed prior to login. The
full System Test requires the user to enter a valid User ID.
Tests are reached via the Internet at http://eikon.thomsonreuters.com/web, or via Thomson Reuters

JAVA RUNTIME ENVIRONMENT

Eikon for Wealth Management requires Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in order to provide
streaming updates and news. To deliver optimised performance and stability, please note the following
recommendations.

Recommended
Java JRE 32 bit

Oracle JRE version 1.6 V10 (or above)

Oracle JRE version 1.7 V10-21 & V51. We do
not support v25, v40 or v45.

Next-generation plug-in support

Enabled

JAVA VERSION QUALIFICATION SCHEDULE

Please note that the targeted dates for qualification require that all critical issues found in testing are fixed
as part of the target release.

JRE 1.6 SERIES UPDATE: EWM AND JAVA JRE 1.6 QUALIFIED FOR ALL VERSIONS
FROM 1.6.0_10 UP TO AND INCLUDING JRE 1.6.0_45 AS OF NOVEMBER 2013

JRE 1.7 SERIES UPDATE: EWM AND JAVA JRE 1.7 QUALIFIED FOR ALL VERSIONS
FROM 1.7.0_10 UP TO AND INCLUDING JRE 1.7.0_21 AND JRE 1.7.0_51 AS OF FEBRUARY
2014. WE DO NOT SUPPORT 1.7.0_25, 1.7.0_40 OR 1.7.0_45.

A supported Java version must be installed and be designated as the default Java Virtual Machine (JVM).
If these conditions are not met, the Eikon for Wealth Management application will not run correctly and
will report an error condition such as the example below. The user can select to continue to use the
product in snapshot mode whereby by no streaming updates will be received, but this is not
recommended for everyday use.

Getting Started

Thomson Reuters Eikon for Wealth Management

Checking and configuring the default Java Virtual Machine

If more than one Java version is installed on a PC, the Eikon for Wealth Management service will attempt
to use the designated default Java Virtual Machine. If the default JVM is a version not supported by
Eikon for Wealth Management, then the service will not run and give an error message. In this scenario,
it will be necessary to designate a supported JRE as the default JVM.
To designate a specific Java version as the default JVM, or to check the current default JVM:
1. From the Windows Control Panel click on the Java icon. Select the Java tab, and then View > User.
This will display a list of the installed Java versions.
2. Select the Enabled tick box of the correct JRE as the default JVM. De-select any other versions to
disable them.
Please ensure that only one Java version is enabled to ensure that the service runs correctly!

Next-generation plug-in support

Eikon for Wealth Management performance is optimised
when the JRE "next-generation" plug-in is enabled. This
requires JRE version 1.6.0_10 or higher. To enable this
feature:

From the Windows Control Panel click on the Java

icon. Select the Advanced tab and click on Java
Plug-in.
Make sure that the box is ticked for Enable the nextgeneration Java Plug-in.
Click OK to save the change, and restart the browser
to put it into effect.

Installing Java
If Java is not installed, or the installed JRE versions are not supported by Eikon for Wealth Management,
then it is necessary to install a supported version of Java. Please contact your IT Support Team or follow
these installation instructions:
1. The latest version of the Oracle Java can be found at the Oracle website
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html.
2. Other versions can be found at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/archive-139210.html
3. Note that only 32-bit versions of JRE are supported for use with Thomson Reuters Eikon for Wealth
Management.
4. Run the downloaded file (e.g., jre-6u17-windows-i586.exe) to install the Java Runtime Environment.
If there are no other JRE's installed, it will automatically become the default JVM.

2.3 OPTIMISING PRODUCT PERFORMANCE

This section provides a summary of the key areas that can affect performance, plus further advice and
tips about how to optimise the performance of Eikon for Wealth Management.

ANTI-VIRUS AND ANTI-MALWARE

Many anti-virus or anti-malware products now offer real-time checking of web pages for potential security
threats, which can affect performance. It is recommended to disable real-time webpage checks or to set
up exceptions for URL's accessed by Eikon for Wealth Management specifically, the URL's for static
and streaming content, listed in this document in SECTION 3 Pages 15 and 16. Your IT Support Team
should be able to help with this.

TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES

Many features of Eikon for Wealth Management require files that are downloaded when the user logs on
the system, and are then stored in the browser cache. Here is a summary of four areas that can help to
provide optimised performance:

Configure the browser to always check for the latest version of web pages, as shown in the
section Temporary Internet files

Reserve ample disk space for the browser cache a minimum of 1024K, as described in the
section Temporary Internet files

Remember that users should not delete the browser cache unless there is an overriding
reason to do so. In other words, do not erase the "browsing history" or "temporary Internet files".
Every time the browser cache is cleared, all the required files must be downloaded again when
the service is next accessed, which can result in performance degradation.

Configure the browser to not delete encrypted files from the browser cache, as noted in section
Optimise browser performance. Again, some of these files may be required by Eikon for
Wealth Management, and if they are deleted, they must be downloaded again the next time that
the product is accessed.

NEXT GENERATION PLUGIN

Thomson Reuters Eikon for Wealth Management runs most efficiently when the Java Runtime
Environment (JRE) "next-generation" plug-in is enabled. This is supported in JRE version 1.6.0_10 and
above. Enable this feature in the Java control panel by following the instructions found on Page 6.

IMPORTANT: Browser caching must be enabled in order to see optimised EWM

performance, and we strongly recommend having the latest IE browser security
updates and patches applied as this can impact performance.

Ports used
HTTP (port 80) and HTTPS (port 443) must be enabled for successful connection to the Thomson
Reuters Eikon for Wealth Management service.

What are HTTP persistent connections?

HTTP persistent connections (also called "HTTP connection reuse" or "HTTP keep-alive") re-use the
same TCP connection to send and receive multiple HTTP requests/responses, rather than opening a new
one for every single request/response pair.
The use of persistent connections can greatly improve HTTP performance. The advantages include:

Persistent connections are network friendly they create less network traffic due to less-frequent
setting up and tearing down of TCP connections.
They are also faster there is reduced latency on successive requests, due to elimination of the initial
TCP handshake.
Persistent connections allow sufficient time for TCP to determine the network's congestion level, and
thus to respond appropriately.

The advantages are even more obvious with HTTPS (or HTTP over SSL/TLS). Persistent connections
may reduce the number of costly SSL/TLS handshakes needed to establish security associations, in
addition to the initial TCP connection setup.
19

Getting Started

Thomson Reuters Eikon for Wealth Management

In HTTP/1.1, persistent connections are the default behavior of any connection. That is, unless otherwise
indicated, the client should assume that the server will maintain a persistent connection even after error
responses from the server. However, the protocol provides a means for the client and server to signal the
closing of a TCP connection.

What makes a connection reusable?

TCP by its nature is a stream-based protocol, so in order to reuse an existing connection; the HTTP
protocol has to have a way to indicate the end of the previous response and the start of the next one.
Thus, it is required that all messages on the connection must have a self-defined message length (i.e.,
one not defined by closure of the connection). Self-demarcation is achieved by either setting the contentlength header, or, in the case of a chunked transfer encoded entity body, starting each chunk with a size

What happens if proxy servers are used?

Since persistent connections apply to only one transport link, it is important that proxy servers correctly
signal persistent or non-persistent connections separately with the clients and the origin servers (or other
proxy servers). From the perspective of an HTTP client or server, as far as persistence connection is
concerned, the presence or absence of proxy servers is transparent.

Authentication
Both products Eikon for Wealth Management and the Eikon Excel add-on support authentication on
the following proxy servers:

FreeProxy
Microsofts Forefront/ISA proxy
NTLM/Basic

Content checking
Content-checking gateways provide proactive security for active Web content. They perform real-time
inspections of streaming data, ActiveX, Java, and scripts, checking for malicious code and protecting
workstations from security threats. Such devices are centrally managed, and can be defined with flexible
security policies for departments and users.
Content checking should not be performed for the domains used by Eikon for Wealth
Management, and should be deactivated if necessary. These domains are listed in section Error!
Reference source not found..

Tightening security
The settings above do not need to be applied globally to the Internet zone only to the Thomson Reuters
domains, e.g., "*.thomsonreuters.com" or "*.extranet.thomsonreuters.biz".
