April Affirmation
Desire
Father, let Thy desires be my desires. Let my desires, God,
be Thy desires, in spirit and in truth. (262-60)

May Affirmation
Destiny of the Mind
Lord, thou art my dwelling place! In Thee, O Father, do I
trust! Let me see in myself, in my brother, that Thou wouldst
bless in thy Son, Thy gift to me that I might know Thy ways!
Thou hast promised, O Father, to hear when Thy children
call! Harken, that I may be kept in the way, that I may know
the glory of Thy Son as Thou hast promised in Him, that we
through Him might have access to Thee! Thou, O God, alone
can save! Thou alone can keep my ways! (262-73)

June Affirmation
Destiny of the Body
Lord, use me in whatever way or manner that my body may
be as a living example of Thy love to the brethren of our Lord.

A BIG THANK YOU to A.R.E. Volunteers!

ome of our readers may

not be aware of the fact that
A.R.E. volunteers are the
heartbeat (and remain at the core)
of so many of our ongoing activiKEVIN J. TODESCHI

ties! These events occur in Virginia
Beach, throughout the United
States and Canada, and even in dozens of places around the
world. Our volunteers help sponsor local conference programs.
They host ASFG Study Group meetings in their homes. They
present local inquirers meetings. They provide all manner of
educational materials at local events. They help ship books to
prisoners. They work in our volunteer call center, answering
every kind of question. They commit to daily working with
prayer and sending out healing energy. They work in every
department at A.R.E. Headquarters: from the Library and the
Visitors Center to Conferences and Buildings and Grounds.
The officers on the Board of the Edgar Cayce organizations
are all volunteers. In a very real sense, our volunteers make the
work of A.R.E. possible.
In Virginia Beach alone, last year our volunteers logged a
total of 16,886 volunteer hours in 24 different departments! If
we simply calculated having to pay $7.25 per hour (Virginias
minimum wage), that would account for more than $122,000
in non-paid labor! We are so grateful to our volunteers! (If you
live in the Virginia Beach area and would like to be considered
for volunteer activities at headquarters, visit: EdgarCayce.org/
volunteers.)
In terms of the greatest number of hours logged at headquarters by any one group of volunteers, that distinction goes
to the Board of Trustees. In addition to meeting in Virginia
Beach three times per year (at their own expense), the board
collectively logs more than 5,000 work hours each year in
Board phone calls, committee meetings, and on-site visits.
Thank you, Board Members!
Next to the Board, the next five most active volunteer areas
consist of:
1) Helping at A.R.E. Conferences in Virginia Beach;
2) Taking part in the Glad Helpers Healing Prayer Group
that meets each Wednesday morning (and is open to the
public);
3) Talking to callers and answering members questions in
our volunteer call (and email) center;
4) Volunteers giving the free daily lecture at our Visitors
Center; and,

5) Working in our Prison Programopening and logging

mail and mailing out books to inmates throughout the countryin fact, our Prison Program gets more mail than any other
department at the organization! (See page 31 for a report on
the Prison Program.)
In terms of opportunities outside of Virginia Beach, there
are dozens of ongoing volunteer teams throughout the United
States, involving the efforts of hundreds of individuals. These
volunteers help A.R.E. Headquarters put on conferences and
retreats in their areas, as well as hosting their own local conferences. At over 100 various programs each year, they work
the book tables, the study group information tables, and the
membership tables. They write articles for local newsletters.
They update website information. They answer calls from local
inquirers. They take road trips to surrounding communities
and provide every manner of information about the Cayce
work. They give conference speakers rides to and from the
airport and wherever else needed. They open their homes for
regular meetings. A conservative estimate is that they collectively account for more than 30,000 volunteer hours each year! (If
you live in the United States or Canada and would like to be
considered for volunteer activities near you, email Levan Burgin
at levan.burgin@edgarcayce.org.) Many of our volunteers also
gather each year at our annual Membership Congress.
Our international activities at dozens of Edgar Cayce
Centers throughout the world are also made possible by volunteers. For example, the biggest Edgar Cayce Center outside of
Virginia Beach is in Japan. There all of the Board members are
also volunteers. Volunteers help the center publish its magazine
and newsletters. Volunteers help the center translate the Edgar
Cayce readings into Japanese. (In fact, the Center plans to have
all readings translated into Japanese by 2020!) During the
Centers 20th anniversary conference last year, 10 volunteers
helped host more than 300 participants. According to Shigeru
Mitsuda, the Centers president, Without the help of volunteers, we could not continue to carry out our activities! (If
you are a member of the international community and would
like to see what kinds of activities are available near you, visit:
EdgarCayce.org/international and click on events.)
On behalf of all of us, I wish to extend a big THANK YOU
to all of our volunteers for making this work possible!

BUDDHA AND JESUS

Thanks for the article on Buddhism (Jan-Mar) stating that in the 6th century BC, Siddhartha Gautama
[Buddha], while meditating, received enlightenment
explaining human sufferingwith specific remedies
for overcoming it and attaining joy. In later times, Jesus
revealed that suffering is a direct result of sin [karma]:
All they that take the sword, shall perish with the
sword. (Matt. 26:52) His teachings bear out that
suffering may only be alleviated through practicing the
opposite action: love one another. (John 15:12)
Thus the messages of the two are compatible; both men
are honored. But when Jesus became the Christ, with power to make the Holy Spirit available to followersallowing them direct access to all truthHe became uniquely
different from Buddha and all other spiritual leaders!

EVOLVING BELIEFS
I was blown away by Lynn
Sparrow Christys insightful
article, Evolution Reshapes
Our Approach (Jan-Mar).
Her article captures my
spiritual philosophy precisely.
In my opinion, the principle of
evolution cannot be realistically denied by a thoughtful
and informed person. It raises
the question: How big is God?
The leading edges of the principles of cosmology, quantum
physics, and evolution are becoming increasingly spiritual
in nature. I believe that these
disciplines will merge with
spirituality at the top of the
pyramid.
At last, God will not be a
Super Santa Claus who takes
sides in wars, political campaigns, and football games.
The conflict between science
and religion may yet be resolved. Meanwhile, the beliefs
of all people must be allowed
to evolve.

the Cayce readings range from deceased physicians and engineers to angels
and archangels. No inventory, however, is
complete without mention of the Great
White Brotherhood (GWB), a community of enlightened beings from all races
and religions who are tasked with guiding
planet earth into the future. Referred to
in metaphysical literature as the Council
of Light, the White Lodge, the Order of
Melchizedek, or simply the Brotherhood,
the Ascended Masters of the GWB are variously reputed to include Gautama Buddha,
Confucius, Kwan Yin, Mahatma Kuthumi,
John the Baptist, Jesus, Pharaoh Thutmose
III, Pythagoras, and the Comte de Saint
Germain. Having mastered lifes lessons
and overcome their karmic challenges, they
have chosen to remain in spirit form on the
earth plane to help students follow the path
to enlightenment. That Norfolk/Virginia
Beach was said to be the GWBs seaport
home is only one of the many delightful
surprises to be found in the Cayce readings.

The term GWB

Comte de Saint Germain

Confucius

is not original to Cayce, nor to the Theosophists who

popularized the term decades earlier. Nor
can credit be shared with the Rosicrucians
of late mediaeval times and the Gnostics
before them, whose philosophies are
based on kindred concepts. The cornerstone of the GWB can be traced back to
early Judaism and legendary priest-king
Melchizedek, founder of what became the
city of Jerusalem. Introduced in Genesis,
Melchizedek is later referenced in Psalms as
entering the covenant of everlasting priesthood, what becomes known in Jewish
scripture as the order of Melchizedek.
This is particularly relevant to students
of the Cayce readings, as Melchizedek
is identified as a previous incarnation of
Enoch, who finally reached his status as
an Ascended Master in his incarnation as
Jesus. He would first undergo initiation in
the Great Pyramid at Giza, the city where
three of the worlds great religions took

the same journey.
The New Testament adds more detail.
Revelation VI describes saintly souls returning to the throne of God as being cloaked in
white robes, and that they rest for a season
(leaving the cycle of reincarnation), until
their fellow servants and brothers (those
not yet enlightened) should be fulfilled.
Revelation VII tells us that these individuals have karmically purified themselves,
making the journey possible: These are
they who have come out of the great tribulation and they have washed their robes
and made them white...
Into this equation comes the concept
of ascension, which can be traced to the
Gospel of John, when Mary Magdalene
reaches out to touch Christ at the tomb,
and He responds, Touch me not, for I
have not yet ascended to my Father. (This
passage, coincidentally, has led to the idea
that the mere touch of an ordinary human,
who still holds to the concepts of limitation
and separation, is enough to interfere with
the transition process.) Completing the
picture is an insight into the task that God
has placed upon Ascended Masters to raise
the consciousness of those they have left
behind. This is seen in the example of Jesus
in the Gospel of John, when He tells His
disciples: I prepare a place for you and
All these things I have done, ye shall do
and even greater things shall ye do.
Further concepts underlying the GWB
appear in the Apocryphal Gospel of Enoch
and the Gnostic texts, which were considered blasphemy because they suggested
that everyone was capable of performing
miraclesbecoming Gods themselvesif
they were to undergo the process of ascension, what Buddhist and Hindu traditions
call enlightenment. Hence, in Western
tradition, come the combined teachings
of the Mystery Schools and Hermeticism,
reconciling their different systems of beliefs
into one heterogeneous belief, which in turn
lays the foundation for the Rosicrucians,
Theosophists, and Anthroposophists, and
finally our modern-day understanding of
the GWB. This is also the clear message
that comes through in reading 957-1 (see
sidebar), conducted for a noted philosophy professor, Vedic scholar, and traveler
to Tibet, who is encouraged to seek help
from the Ascended Masters so that he may
manifest on the physical plane the God

within him.

Ascended Master
or Essene?

The first of several hurdles students face

when exploring the few references to the
GWB in the Cayce readings is nomenclature.
A source of confusion here is differentiating
the fraternity of Ascended Masters from the
community of Essenes whom Cayce describes as tasked with preparing the way for
Jesus birth. Both fellowships are referred
to as The Brotherhood, their members
similarly wear white robes, and Jesus plays
a defining role. Cayce resolves this issue in
254-109 [Q&A 8,9] by explaining that the
Essene community is to the GWB what a
particular denomination is to Christianity.
The Essene Brotherhood might then be
considered a church with the support of
the GWB. This is further made clear in a
reading for a housewife and neuropathist
(1010-17) [par. 8] whom Cayce has identified in a previous incarnation as the Essene
teacher Josie. It was the behind-the-scenes
role of the GWB, Cayce explains, who selected her as the handmaiden or companion
of Mary, Jesus and, Joseph.
The most obvious difference between the

Essenes and the GWB, however, is that the

Ascended Masters are no longer present in
flesh and blood, but can project themselves
into the physical earth plane. In a reading
for a Long Island, New York, housewife
(587-5), Cayce has a vision of her spirit
guide hovering above. In a subsequent explanatory reading (587-6) he describes the
vision as a holy experience in which she is
in the presence of John the Baptist, clothed
in garments white as snow, who is helping
her to fulfill the spiritual quest for which she
dedicated her life back in Atlantis. Cayce
is then asked what relation John is to the
White Brotherhood. As then, the leader,
now among the head of the Brotherhood.
GWB spirit-projections also figure in
Cayces personal life story as suggested by
the repeated appearance of a mysterious
turbaned man, racially Tibetan or Hindi,
and robed in white, who manifests at crisis
points throughout Cayces career. In one appearance Cayce is healed from pneumonia,
in another he is counseled before entering
a business partnership. The readings do
not overtly state that the turbaned man is
an Ascended Master of the GWB, nor is
the question posed, but the Eileen Garrett
trance sessions (507-1, 2) have led many to

The Brotherhood: Spiritual Lights

Q. Was the entity incarnated in
Atlantis?
A. In Atlantis the entity visited. Incarnated
in what is now Tibet, but a visitor to that
land during that period when there was the
spreading of the teachings from that now
known as the Mohamets [Mohammeds or
Muhammads?]. [GDs note: He later wrote a
book on Atlantis, which was never published.]
Q. Should the balance of my life in this
incarnation be devoted to business; or
primarily to the attainment of spiritual
light?
A. To spiritual light and teaching.
Q. What is my Cosmic and Mystic work
yet to be done in this incarnation?
A. That as has been indicated, in that as
has been given in the experiences of the

and in those tenets, may the entity excel and

Q. What organizations, or what channels should I use to do my cosmic work;
and to give out the Spiritual light that
can be reflected through me?
A. Through that of the [White?] brotherhood as is established in the mount (for
the entity has approach to the Holy Mount);
also among those associated in the school
[Atlantic University?], wherein the expressions were given, That Man May Make
Manifest His Love for God and Man.
Q. Should I begin now systematically

community appears to have something to

say about the GWB. And as Hugh Lynn
Cayce aptly pointed out in correspondence
with A.R.E. members, what has been written is both exaggerated and extravagant in
content, and difficult to prove in relation
to the readings if only because his father
had so little to say on the subject. There
is, however, one reference that may indeed
hold great significance, if only because it
directly relates to Cayces own soul journey
and the GWB.
Reading 1152-11 was given for a recently widowed author seeking to know
where to relocate. She is told to avoid Los
Angeles, San Francisco, and New York, as
these cities will be among those destroyed
in cataclysms to come. Cayce recommends
Norfolk and Virginia Beach, which will be
a safe haven because it is the seaport and
center of the White Brotherhood. The revelation here is why Cayce himself was drawn
to Virginia Beach, and is from where the
work has spread to the rest of the world.
Reading 294-189 suggests that Cayce,
in a previous incarnation, may have been
Greek philosopher and mathematician
Pythagoras. If the greater body of metaphysical literature is correct, this would
make Cayce himself an Ascended Master
of the GWB who incarnates in the flesh
and blood to better serve humanity. How
appropriate that he should drop anchor in
Virginia Beach!

s an astrologer, one of the most

frequent questions I am asked is about
relationships. When clients inquire
about a partner, I typically look
at Venus and the 7th house in
the inquiring clients horoscope to describe some
characteristics of the partner. If they ask about
parents, I first look at the Moon/Saturn or the
4th/10th houses. If they ask about children, I
examine the Sun and the 5th house, etc. Refer to
houses 1-12 in sample chart below.
But how can that be? How can I see the
characteristics of someone else in your
personal horoscope? Interestingly,
this is a question I have never
been asked by my clients
but it is an important topic
in understanding the
archetype of relationships
in a horoscope. The clue
to answering this question
lies in the psychological
concept of projection. While
the planets in your horoscope
represent qualities that belong
only to you, if you are not aware of
having these traits, then you may project them
onto another person. With projection, you see in
someone else a trait that actually resides within
you and of which you are unconscious. This is
one of the ways the Universe arranges for you
to evolve and become a more whole person. You
attract others into your life with characteristics
that you need to develop (or heal) in yourself.
This includes people you admire as well as
those you dislike. Either way, the other person
is like a mirror, reflecting back to you aspects
of yourself. As the Cayce readings often remind
us, our relationships are karmic and within our
relationships we continually meet self.
For constantly is the soul-entity meeting self in
its activities, in its relationships. (1604-1)
If you remain in a relationship, you will have
the opportunity to become conscious of and
develop the trait(s) in a constructive way in your
own personality. You will become less needy for
another person to complete you (as in a partner)
or live your life for you (as with your child).
For example: the planet Uranus represents
a need for excitement, change, freedom,
and independence; and in your horoscope

will indicate an area where you resist being

fenced in. Therefore, if you have Uranus in a
relationship area of your horoscope (such as the
7th house) and if you are unconscious of your
need for freedom within the relationship, then
this trait may be projected and you might attract
someone who is unavailable or unable to commit
to a long-term relationship, thus giving you the
freedom you unconsciously need.
In other words, if this theme is in your horoscope
and you are projecting these characteristics,
then you see them in the other person but not
in yourself. There are myriad ways for
Uranus to manifest in relationships
that would fit this particular
archetypal pattern and it is
certainly possible to have a
long-term relationship where
you are also able to express
your need for freedom. If
this Uranian theme is located
in one of the parent areas of
your horoscope (such as 4th
and 10th houses), then you may
have experienced a parent as absent
or unavailable physically or emotionally
when you needed support.
We all have areas where we tend to project,
and that is why an astrologer can sometimes
describe the traits of others based on your
horoscope. What your horoscope actually reflects
are the characteristics that you are unconsciously
looking for in a relationship with another person.
The other person may be a good hook for your
projection; that is she or he may have some of
those traits, but to truly see the other person you
would need to examine his/her horoscope.
Is there such a thing as an Ideal Relationship?
According to the Cayce readings, all of your
relationships are perfect for you, and give you a
chance to evolve in this incarnation. The readings
emphasize the importance of setting an Ideal and
purpose for your life and this also includes setting
an Ideal for your relationships.
All entitiesas these two entitiesmeet
for a purpose...Whether these have been for
weal or woe does not prevent the attraction.
Thus, whether that attraction is to be for the
advancement or the undoing of something in
themselves depends, again, upon what is the ideal
of each. (2533-7)

was born in 1920 and religion was

a very serious matter in those days.
Church was a very serious matter. God
himself was a very serious, stern fatherfigure (always masculine in those days!)
Heaven was an unreal, ethereal, pleasant place
where we might go when we died if we had been
very good while on Earth. There was always the
possibility that we might go to a dismal, dark
place called hell as a punishment for mistakes
made in this lifetime. All in all, it was a very grim
state of affairs.
When I was 23, my husband Harmon and I
were invited to come to Virginia Beach to help in
the office of the A.R.E. on Fourteenth Street and
Arctic Circle. Hugh Lynn, Edgar and Gertrudes
oldest son, had been acting as manager for the
A.R.E., and was now in the Army. Harmon and I
were both in school working on Masters degrees,
he at the University of Chicago Divinity School
and I at the Chicago Musical College. My mother-in-law, Margueritte Harmon Bro had visited
the Cayces and couldnt speak highly enough of
the work they were doing. We decided to accept
the invitation. It was the best decision we ever
made in all of our 54 years of married life.
It wasnt long before my mind was completely
blown. My concept of the meaning of life on
earth and our destiny as Gods children was
completely changed.
I didnt understand it all at once, but something in me knew that what I was hearing from
the sleeping Cayce and the very-awake Cayce,
was Gods truth. Life here on this earth began
to make sense.
One of Cayces names for God was the
Creative Forces, and that hit me hard. All
of a sudden God became for me a reservoir of
immense goodness and helpfulness. If I turned to
the Creative Forces when life became impossible
and I was in a quandary wondering what to do
with my life, I could get quiet and get in touch
with that magnificent creativity that is God. God
was not going to solve my particular problem
for me, but I was going to be invited into Gods
creativity and love, and with Gods help, find my
way to a solution.
I really believe that those Creative Forces that
made this wonderful world and everything in it,
are asking me to dance with them, to sing duets
with them, to create beauty and healing with

them. Its a wild, cooperative adventure from

beginning to end. There is nothing to fear when
I am in sync with the Creative Forces.

Speaking of Job

There is a biblical story which speaks right to

our theme.
Job is a righteous man. The biblical story says
he was blameless and upright, one who feared
God and turned away from evil. Job has followed his religious teachings to the letter. He has
done everything right. He has a large family, his
business has gone well, and everything is going
along just fine, until he is hit with boils all over
his bodypainful, oozing boils. He cannot sit or
lie comfortably, he cannot work. He is miserable.
His learned friends come to advise him. Nothing
helps. Job loses everything.
Job curses his birth, wishing he had never been
born, but he never curses God. Then one day Job
gets a rude awakening.
God shows Job that life is not about being
correct, even though Job is trying very hard to
be faithful to the God he understands. In essence
God is trying to tell Job that life is not about
doing and saying all the right things. It is about
creating something good and helpful out of every
difficult situation. Your view, Job, of me and my
plan for you, is too limited, says God.
Then the Lord answered Job out of the
whirlwind:
Where were you when I laid the foundations of
the earth? Who shut in the sea when it burst out
from the womb? Where is the way to the dwelling
of light and where is the place of darkness? Have
you entered the storehouses of snow? Has the
rain a father, or who has begotten the drops of
dew? Who has put wisdom in the inner parts and
given understanding to the mind? Do you give
the horse its might? Anyone who argues with me
must respond. (Job finally gets it!) I will lay my
hand on my mouth!
I know that you can do all things. I have
uttered what I did not understand, things too
wonderful for me, which I did not know!
And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job and
gave him twice as much as he had before.
Our God, our wildly Creative Forces, will
always be more than we understand and always
right at hand, offering us surprising ways to cope
and grow.

MEDICAL INTUITION
INTERVIEW WITH

CAROLINE MYSS

CAROLINE MYSS is a five-time New York Times

Medical Intuition,
used throughout
history by gifted
physicians to perform
health evaluations,
is emerging as a
new science within
the field of energy
medicine.

April-June 2015

bestselling author and internationally renowned speaker in

the fields of human consciousness, spirituality and mysticism,
health, energy medicine, and the science of medical intuition.
For many years, Caroline refined her skills as a medical
intuitive, with the assistance of C. Norman Shealy, MD, PhD,
a Harvard-trained neurosurgeon. She developed the field of
Energy Anatomy, and co-wrote with Norm, The Creation
of Health. She wrote Anatomy of the Spirit, and later
Why People Dont Heal and How They Can, identifying
a syndrome she calls woundology, now a recognized
psychological condition. She has developed a system to
profile an individuals Sacred Contract, a zodiac of 12
archetypal patterns that reflect the agreements the soul made
prior to birth. She maintains a busy schedule of programs
and workshops.

The following is an edited interview with the Venture Inward team from
January 2015.

11

The key to becoming clear as an intuitive

is developing self-esteem, integrity, and
living a congruent life.
You must be devoted to a
practice of inner integrity.

Venture Inward: What

exactly is medical intuition, especially as
regards self-diagnosis
and healing? What is
the difference between
a medical intuitive and
a psychic?
Caroline Myss: Medical intuition is a
developing energy science. As a science,
it involves a specific knowledge base of
how the human energy system is aligned
to the psyche, the spirit and the physical
body, for instance. The practitioner must
have a precise understanding of energy
anatomy as a base, like the alphabet. Then
a student needs to learn about the mystical
laws and the nature of archetypes and the
power of myths. All of these areas have
profound influences upon an individuals
health. These are just a few of the subjects
that qualify medical intuition as a science
in its own right, though not a laboratory
science. When the laboratory is an energetic or psychic one, the data is energetic
as well. However, there are still patterns of
behavior that can be observed and studied
in people whether they are physical or
psychic, and thats the nature of science: the
study of observable patterns from which
common data is deduced.
The wisest advice I can provide about
being a good intuitive is that it is more important to develop healthy self-esteem than
to focus on the nonsensical goal of developing ones intuition. No one has to
work at developing intuitionabsolutely
no onebecause everyone is born highly
intuitive. What people have to work at is
12

becoming strong enough to actually listen

to their intuition because intuition is their
voice of truth, honesty, and integrityand
those are three qualities that most people
fear the most. Someone who cant tell the
truth or hear the truth will be a horrible
intuitive or at the very least, rely on visual
observations. That person is your basic
psychic, a highly skilled observer who has
the ability to sense the energy field around
another person. That really doesnt take a
whole lot of skill. Everyone does that.
The intuitive who has a healthy sense of
self-esteem listens first to herself, to her inner impressions, and to her own guidance.
Clarity requires that such an intuitive live
a congruent life as a spiritual practice; that
is, she or he has to do their best to be true
to what they say they believe and who they
say they are. Its not easy but its worth it.
VI: How can someone who is not psychic learn to be a medical intuitive?
CM: Medical intuition is a science...
if someone wanted to become a good
physician or a great architect or anything
worthwhile, how would you answer that?
You would tell them to study the subject
for years and then do the internship required. Why would medical intuition be
any different? Its not. It took me years to
become as good a medical intuitive as I am,
and I am grateful to have had Norm Shealy,
MD, PhD, as my physician and mentor. We
needed to do countless readings together
for years, and with each reading, I gained
more confidence. I studied what I needed
to, and worked with Norm for years. I
believe a medical intuitive must partner
EdgarCayce.org

with a physician, precisely because you

are working with human beings who are
in need of healing. And sometimes it is a
matter of life and death.
Both Norm and I believe that a person
requires a professional course of study as
well as an apprenticeship with a physician
(including a qualifying exam) before that
individual can be licensed as a medical
intuitive. This is a serious science. Just because intuition is involved does not give
people license to declare they are gifted in
a healing art, allowing them to sidestep
required education, especially when the
health of another person is at stake. The
consequences of harming another person
are far too great. And you must remember
that no one wants to hear that they are ill. It
is not unusual for people [basic psychics]
to use vague language such as, Your
energy is low, or You have a blocked
chakra, and for the ill person to take that
as a complete diagnosiswhen in fact that
individual might have cancer, which is precisely why his or her energy is low. Telling
that individual that his or her energy is
low or depleted will make that person feel
safe because the word cancer is not said
and therefore it becomes unnecessary to
seek allopathic medical assistance. I have
personally encountered numerous cases in
which individuals have gone to healers, had
these assessments and learned far too late
that they had a serious illness that should
have been treated far earlier.
As a result of our work in this field, many
thousands of people have pursued careers
as medical intuitives, and are using these
skills to help themselves and their families.
VI: How integral is healing the self to the
process of becoming intuitive?
CM: Well, to that I would reply, How
important is being a kind person to teaching kindness? But I would add that if you
are suggesting that a person must be fully
healedwhatever that meansprior to
becoming intuitive, that makes no sense
at all. The key to becoming clear as an intuitive is developing self-esteem, integrity,
and living a congruent life. You must be
devoted to a practice of inner integrity. You
cannot be someone who is frightened of
your own guidance and how truth reveals
itself to you within the activities of your
April-June 2015

own life and then think you can see clearly

for another.
VI: Whats the difference between the
spirit and the soul, as you use those words
in your talks and writing?
CM: I believe that the spirit is the energy
of our ego, personality, and who we are in
this lifetime. The soul is the deeper eternal
part of ourselves that holds our mystical
essence.
VI: Can someone be soul-sick?
CM: Yes, a person can be soul-sick, as
you put it. A person can be in league with
darkness, for example. Many people are far
more comfortable telling lies than speaking
honestly to people. They do not even realize
how easily they lie in big and small ways
during their daily life because lying has become second nature to them. They discount
small lies as if it was nothing. But the truth
isand it is a truthevery lie, no matter
how smallrepresents a partnership with
darkness, a type of agreement a person has
made that says they are far more comfortable working with deception than with
truth. Gossip or harming the reputation of
another person is a way we poison our own
soul. Maintaining anger whether for a day
or yearsif you can imagineis acid in the
soul. Given just this short list, can you imagine how many people are suffering at the
soul level? And this suffering is expressed
as anxiety, depression, mood swings, restlessness, despair, and other psychological
pain. So many people turn to medication
for what is in actuality crises of the soul.
Norm and I have spearheaded this field
for 25 years and have both come to believe
that medical intuition is a true science of
the soul, if not a core one. As a result, we
have both pursued deeper understandings
of the role that the soul serves in the healing of illness. We consider this dimension
of healing to be the mystical domain, and
we share a profound belief that when an
individual is open to including mystical
teachings in his or her healing journey, remarkable healings can and do often occur.
A miracle is when God bends the laws of
nature just for you.
VI: Would you say that the purpose of
most peoples lives is a healing journey?

CM: Life is a journey of choice and

power: Every choice we make sets acts of
creation into motion for which we are held
responsible. By far, most of the millions
of choices we make are unconscious, not
conscious. We are confronted by endless
illusions about what we believe is real versus what the soul knows to be real within
us: The eternal versus the temporal. We
must choose again and again between the
value systems of each world. Health is a
by-product.

VI: What is the most important idea/
concept/truth that you would like to share
with our readers?
CM: Prayer is power.
Every choice you make matters more
than you will ever realize.
The quality of life in the world is every
persons responsibility for that reason until
our last breath.
Thank you!
_____________
VI: For those who are interested in
attending your Virginia Beach weekend
conference this April 17-19, would you
describe the focus of the program?
CM: Our goal in this workshop is to
assist people in healing every manifestation
of illness. To that end, Norm and I have
put together a workshop that is aimed at
being both educational and hands-on. Our
emphasis is on exploring the nature of the
human energy system, energy medicine,
and healing. In addition, we will explore
the realm of mysticism and the mystical
laws. Because this program is devoted to
healing, we will be doing healing meditations and exercises in contemplation,
inner reflection, and prayer. Well also be
exploring the origins of disease, patterns of
stress and its management, intuiting your
strengths and weaknesses, the human energy system, illness as metaphor, healing as a
mystical experience, the nature of miracles
and healing, and prayer, healing, and the
role of grace.

DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE

BY JOSEPHINE B. ADAMSON, MD, MPH, CMT

Our respiratory
tracts are able
to heal and
regenerate if we
avoid inhaling
toxins.

14

Breathe Easy

reath links body, mind, and spirit. The cycle

of oxygen inhaled and carbon dioxide exhaled
sustains our bodies. The breath of life resonates
through our immaterial being as well. The Latin word
animus and the Greek word anemos both refer to
spirit as well as the word breath or wind. Native American peoples rituals emphasized the power
of breath and the wind. Zulu healers still call on their
ancestors to breathe divine healing into the afflicted.
Many spiritual traditions encourage breathing practices as tools for meditation and contemplation. The
Cayce readings describe detailed breathing exercises
similar to those found in Tibetan Buddhist prayer tradition: In breathing, take into the right nostril, strength!
Exhale through thy mouth. Intake in thy left nostril,
exhaling through the right: opening the centers of thy
body (281-28) Most of the time, though, breathing
is something we are able to take for granted as we live
our days unaware of the beautiful life-sustaining force
moving through us many times each minute.
A peek into the science of breathing provides insight
into the perfectly balanced design of respiration. We
breathe in air through our noses and mouths. The
air moves through progressively smaller tubes of the
trachea, the bronchi, and bronchioles to end in clusters of alveoli, tiny (100 per inch), thin-walled air sacs
surrounded by blood vessels. The air (about 21% oxygen) is absorbed through the alveolar walls through
the walls of the capillary blood vessels and into the
bloodstream. The oxygen-rich blood travels to the
heart where it is pumped through the body to energize
every cell. At the same time, other microscopic blood
vessels transfer the waste product gas carbon dioxide
back through the alveolar walls Carbon dioxide is
then excreted through the breathing tubes and out of
the body during exhalation. What an amazing system!
Unfortunately we humans compromise our perfect
respiratory systems in many ways. Chemicals are
breathed into the delicate alveoli along with air. Our
atmosphere is contaminated with industrial pollutants
(the E.P.A. tracks 187 air pollutants) as well as from
natural pollutant sources like volcanos and forest
fires. Inside our buildings we breathe toxins emitted
from radon, improper ventilation of furnaces, building
materials, carpets and furniture, cleaning solvents,
air freshener chemicals, and other aerosols. Asthma
rates have skyrocketed, in some part due to increased
exposure to these respiratory irritants. We knowingly
abuse our lungs, too. 160,000 Americans die from lung
cancer each year, 90% of these deaths attributable to

smoking. Millions now use e-cigarettes, but theres

no long-term data on the safety of inhaling propylene
glycol and chemical flavorings along with dangerous
nicotine. Our lungs are not happy with all the contamination, though they do their best to clear out irritants
through increasing mucus production and coughing.
Our respiratory tracts are thankfully able to heal and
regenerate, as mentioned in Cayce reading 796-2, if
we avoid what exposures we can. Yes, Edgar Cayce
himself smoked tobacco, but our modern environment
as well as currently available cigarettes, are much more
toxic than those in Cayces day, 70-100 years ago.
It makes sense to eliminate as many respiratory
toxins as we can. Quitting smoking is the number one
thing we can do for our overall health and for those
people and pets exposed to our second-hand smoke.
There are wonderful free community programs to help
you (see below).
The A.R.E. wants to support everyone in quitting
smoking, and we have committed to having a smokefree campus by January 1, 2016. We can further
improve our respiratory environment by getting rid
of as many chemicals as possible in our homes. Limit
sprays, and choose the least toxic products available
for cleaning and furnishing. Dont fall for advertising
insisting that our homes smell like some fake perfume.
Essential oils are widely available to replace synthetic
chemicals. Though many modern pollutants didnt
exist 75 years ago, the Cayce readings were prescient:
Sufficiently strong odors are just as harmful to the
body as dust. (3622-1) We can make a difference in
our respiratory health.
We can breathe more easily, even in this world of increasing pollution. We can improve our physical health
through awareness of the lungs and their functioning.
Focus on breathing has positive effects on mental health,
too. Simple mindfulness of the intake and exhalation
of breath can calm, clarify, and even lead us towards
universal consciousness: This opening of the centers
or the raising of the life force may be brought about by
certain characteristics of breathingfor as indicated,
the breath is power in itself (2475-1) Our bodies,
minds, and spirits are united through the breath of life.

CAYCE and the Bible

And as there is the analyzing of the Christ-Life,
Christ-Consciousness, one realizes and finds that the
Christ-Child was born into the earth as man; one
born in due season, in due time, in mans spiritual
evolution, that man might have a pattern of the
personality and the individuality of God Himself.
(5758-1)
love, love in everything, then ye will find, as
He has given, He the Master, Jesus, the ChristConsciousness, will abide with thee. He has
attained the Christ-Consciousness in
giving of Himself. (3459-1)

THE ORIGIN OF THE CHRIST

B Y A N N J A F F I N, M S

he Gospel of John is my favorite book of the Bible. Im

especially drawn to its mystical
first chapter: (John 1:1-4,10,14)
1. In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God.
2. The same was in the beginning
with God.
3. All things were made by him; and
without him was not anything
made that was made.
4. In him was life; and the life was
the light of men.
10. He was in the world, and the
world was made by him, and the
world knew him not.
14. And the Word was made flesh,
and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the
only begotten of the Father)...
I will approach the origin of the Christ
from these verses which seem to say that
Christ was active in the process of creation.
This idea has long fascinated me. Well
also see what the Cayce readings and the
authors who have written about creation
based on the readings have to say.

Definitions of Christ-Consciousness

Lets start with a few definitions of the

Christ from Cayce. The 5749-series of
readings contains a lot of wonderful material about Christ Consciousness and

April-June 2015

Jesus since some of them were requested

by Tom Sugrue as he was writing There Is
a River. Reading 5749-14 contains a classic definition:
Q. Should the Christ-Consciousness be
described as the awareness within each
soul, imprinted in pattern on the mind and
waiting to be awakened by the will, of the
souls oneness with God?
A. Correct. Thats the idea exactly!
Reading 5749-4 contains this beautiful
definition: The Christ Consciousness is a
universal consciousness of the Father Spirit.

Christ as Part of Creation

The Cayce readings tell us that it is as

important to know where we came from
as where were going and we cant start
any further back than what Eula Allen
wrote about in Before the Beginning
this small, classic book (now out of print)
begins with spiritual creation long before
there was physical creation. It tells us that
God desired companionship and expression. I was privileged to hear Eula speak in
the late 1970s and Ive never forgotten the
simplicity of her description of creation.
She described God as a great portion of
biscuit dough. Since at that time there was
nothing but God and He desired companion, God subdivided Himself and created
the first biscuit which was Christ. God
saw that this was good so together God
and Christ created more biscuitsall the

souls, including us. Perhaps because of this,

Genesis 1:26 uses the plural ...and God
said, Let us make man in our image, after
our likeness...
Eula cites these readings in support of
Christs involvement in creation:
...In the beginning was the word. The
word was God. The word was with God.
He moved! Hence, as He moved, souls
portions of Himselfcame into being.
(263-13)
...For did the Master Jesus come by
chance? Or was it not according to the
preparation made from the very foundations of the world? For as...indicated,
Without Him there was not anything
made that was made. (3645-1)
Dr. Richard Drummond, late professor
of comparative religion at Dubuque Theological Seminary, and author of A Life of
Jesus the Christ from Cosmic Origins to
Second Coming, refers to the following
two biblical passages: Hebrews 1:2:
His Son...through whom...He made the
worlds and I Pet. 1:19-20: Christ
who was foreordained before the foundation of the world
In what may be a unique Cayce book,
Edgar Cayces Past Lives of Jesus, Glenn
Sanderfur speaks of The first soul created, the one we now call our Elder Brother,
was very special to God, and helped in the
rest of creation.
In Edgar Cayces Story of the Bible, Robert
15

Krajenke quotes the following readings:

Would that all would learn that He, the
Christ-Consciousness, is the Giver, the
Maker, the Creator of the world and all
that be therein. (696-3)
In the beginning, celestial beings. We
have first the Son, then the other sons or
celestial beings, that are given their force
and power. (262-52)
He, that Christ-Consciousness, is that
first spoken of in the beginning when God
said, Let there be light, and there was
light. And that is the light manifested in
the Christ. First it became physically conscious in Adam. And as in Adam we all die,
so in the last AdamJesus, becoming the
Christwe are all made alive. (2879-1)
Cayce told a housewife named Irene
Harrison that she had been Ruth, Jesus sister. In her fifth reading, Edgar spoke about
the Christs role in creation.
For He [Jesus] made Himself of no estate,
though He came into a world created by
His very breath...the maker, as the creator...
He the only begotten, the firstborn, the first
to know flesh, the first to purify it. (1158-5)

The Christ Soul Leads the Way

Cayce tells us that the Master Soul has

frequently incarnated on Earth during
low points in our struggle to evolve. Dr.
Drummond discusses some Cayce read-

ings which show the continued presence

with, and guidance of, the Master Soul to
all peoples.
Q. What part did Jesus play in any of His
reincarnations in the development of the
basic teachings of the following religions
and philosophies? First, Buddhism:
A. This is just one.
Q. Mohammedanism, Confucianism,
Shintoism, Brahmanism, [Platonism], Judaism.
A. As has been indicated, the entity
as an entityinfluenced either directly
or indirectly all those forms of philosophy or religious thought that taught God
was One.
In the first, as one that associated with
in the meditation or spirit ofthat one
guiding same, and those things that have
been added to are much in the same manner that was added to in Judaism. Whether
in Buddhism, Mohammedanism, Confucianism, [Platonism], or whatthese have
been added to much from that as was given
by Jesus in His walk in Galilee and Judea.
In all of these, then, there is that same impelling spirit. (364-9)
Cayces work also reveals some of the
wondrous scope of Jesus spiritual journey.
Q. Should Jesus be described as the
soul who first went through the cycle of
earthly lives to attain perfection, includ-

Past Lives of Jesus

EDGAR CAYCE STATES that Jesus had 33 earthly incarnations but only gave 10 or 11 of them. I have
listed those below. Glenn Sanderfurs book, Edgar Cayces Past Lives of Jesus, explores Jesus earthly journey. A Cayce reading summarizes it this way: For time never was when there was not a Christ...
(262-103) As Glenn says, It is a story almost lost to Christianity.
Gladys Davis Turner, Edgars secretary, told Glenn while he was working on the book, that the subject
of the past lives of Jesus in the readings was what interested Edgar the most.
Amilius: ...as the first begotten of the Father that
came as Amilius in the Atlantean land and allowed
himself to be led in ways of selfishness. Hence, as we
see, all the various stages of developments that have
come to man through the ages have been those periods when He walked and talked with man. (364-8)

Joseph: the son of Rachel and Jacob who was

sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers and was
elevated after interpreting the pharaohs dream.

Adam: first of the Sons of God in the Garden of

Eden.

Asaph: psalmist and musician under Kings David

and Solomon.

Enoch and Hermes: possibly the same soul.

(The Cayce readings never state that Hermes was
an incarnation of the Master soul.)
Melchizedek: priest and king of ancient
Jerusalem.
16

Joshua: a fierce warrior who assisted Moses

on the Exodus and led the Israelites into the
Promised Land.

Jeshua: organized the return of the Jews from

the Babylon captivity and helped plan the reconstruction of the new temple in Jerusalem.
Zend: the father of Zoroaster and author of the
Zend Avesta.

ing perfection in the planetary lives also?

A. He should be. This is as the man, see?
Q. Should this be described as a voluntary mission One Who was already
perfected and returned to God, having accomplished His Oneness in other planes
and systems?
A. Correct. (5749-14)
IN CLOSING, I want to share a special
personal experience, where Jesus appeared
to me, which demonstrates His availability to us all.
I was on an A.R.E. Tours Caribbean
cruise hosted by Kevin Todeschi and Mary
Roach. Kevin led the group in a problem-solving exercise in which we were to
go within for guidance about a question we
wanted answered. My question was whether I should write a book about Cayces
Universal Christ.
As we sat quietly with eyes closed, Kevin
suggested that we would see ourselves in
some setting. I saw myself on a beach. The
previous day I had been on a beautiful
beach in Honduras. However, my inner
beach looked like Virginia Beach. Kevin
then said that we would see someone who
would in some way answer our question.
To my amazement, Jesus appeared to me
on my inner beach. I dropped to my right
knee and flung myself on my face with
the totally ridiculous thought, How am I
going to breathe with my face in the sand?
(This, of course, is not a problem on a
cruise boat!) I didnt look up but somehow
I could see up and I saw that Jesus was
smiling. I knew He was thinking, Silly
girl. He showed me His heart which was
a valentine-shaped heart. I knew that this
meant two things: share My love; and, if
you think that the Universal Christ is the
heart of the Cayce readingsdo it.

dream is telling him: Do not enter into
a business association with those
whom he was considering if the
conditions put forward (by the dreamer) are not

ways: Forget it, leave it aside, withdraw

they create entanglements. (137-102)

By paying attention
to the practical dream

April-June 2015

Cayce had three dreams in which he met or was

told about two people: Johnson Bradsford and
Whiteford R. Cole. A man in one of the dreams
told Cayce that Bradsford was now registrar
of the U.S. Treasury. In the dream Cayce saw
piles and piles of bills on the counter, of large
denomination. The piles of bills represent many
types of people with different means who would
be interested in Cayces work. Many of them
would come through the men seen in the dreams.
Therefore, Cayce should consider the two
contacts or connectionsand even time, money
expended to contact these associates. Thus,
peoples in high placeseven as of the treasurer
of large institutions may have the opportunity of
knowing Cayces work. The counsel emphatically
said: Act, then, on that seen and given. (294-42,
-43, -105) As pointed out in one of Cayces three
dreams, Cayce met them later, through his friend
and associate, Morton Blumenthal.
Morton Blumenthal (stockbroker) once
dreamed:
Some trouble in the office, and it seemed about
a womans account, yet I am not sure. It seemed
some check should be made out different, or there
might be complicationspossibly legal. I am only
sure of the repeated saying by the Voice: Your
wife should make out the check for $150 (yet
that your wife didnt seem to apply to my own
wife although it might have, for I seemed to
understand it as pertaining to this ladys account).
However, the Voice kept repeating: The $150
check should be made out by your wife your
wifeyour wife.
In the interpretation taken on this dream,
Cayce said that care should be taken in dealing
with two separate transactions of $150 each.
While one is due to the office, the other is due
out, personal. And, one of these accounts has

to do with a friend of the wifes (Mortons

wife). I believe the dream is calling the dreamers
attention to a very practical matter: By paying
attention to these transactions, the dreamer
may avoid any confusion or problem that might
ariseincluding any legal action against Morton.
(900-267)
Hugh Lynn Cayce (Edgars son), who headed
A.R.E. from its inception, had a dream at age 18.
Dreamed of preparing to make a speech before a large audienceI felt greatly disturbed
about making this address, and on going out
before the audience (saw all the audience spread
out before me), I met my father and [he] asked
me if I didnt want him to hold my speech and
prompt me while I made the speech. I replied
that I had better keep the speech up there with
me where I might read it if I needed it. Saw
medals on board on stage. On opening what I
thought to be my speech, I found it to be only
some sheets of blank paper. I rushed up to the
judge and told him that I couldnt make the
speech unless I had it all written out. He told
me I must make it anyway.
Giving the speech represents Hugh Lynn presenting truths to the world. The large audience
represents the various groups to whom the
truths are given. The dreamers father offering
to help shows the assistance that will come to
the dreamer to make him successful. But Hugh
Lynns refusal to take the offer shows too much
self-reliance. The blank pages represent the state
the dreamer will find himself in if he doesnt accept the help. The cry of the judge, the seeing of
the medals, the awards, show that the dreamer
needs to be prepared to meet all conditions mentally. The fathers help represents the help that
the dreamer may receive by turning within to
the giver of all good and perfect giftsGod.
Thus through His strength, through His assistance, may the dreamer be successful. Then
heed it. (341-12)
Hugh Lynn went on to become the primary
speaker for the A.R.E., touring the nation, giving
talks at A.R.E. gatherings, retreats, hospitals,
community forums, homes, and wherever he
was invited. He was sincere and kind, which
attracted many seekers of truth.

A Course in Miracles and Edgar Cayce:

Ask...to receive what is

already given; to accept
what is already there.

B Y L I N DA C A P U T I , R N

love A Course in Miracles. I can

read it, or at least try to read it over
and over again but recognize Im
not fully grasping it, nor consistently applying it. Thankfully that
doesnt stop me.
There are also two small booklets that
are an extension of The Course: one is
The Song of Prayer; Prayer, Forgiveness,
Healing and the other is Psychotherapy
both of which Ive read, or tried to read,
throughout the years.
Recently The Song of Prayer was calling
me again. I ignored it. But it kept calling.
Finally I gave in and picked it up.
Its deep with meaning, like The Course,
and sometimes I read only a line or two.
Other times I understand it perfectly (it
is in English) but cant or maybe refuse to
believe what its sayingpossibly realizing,
unconsciously, it would shatter my whole
belief system.
And then there are times where I read
the words, like this articles title taken
from The Song of Prayer, and see the
truth I always knew, but still let it drop by
the waysideuntil the pain of living life
un-awakened moves me again.

Atheist or Agnostic? I remember as a freshman in college, talking with a

guy I had recently met.
So what are you? he asked, A
Christian, a Jew, or what?

Feeling rather grown-up and confident

about my point of view, I told him I was
an atheist.
Do you realize youre saying you
know there isnt a God? he stated rather
condescendingly.
Actually being all of 17 and not really
sure, I answered, Oh, I didnt know that,
I just dont believe theres a God.
Then youre not an atheist, youre an
agnostic. You dont think theres a God.
Okay, then, Im an agnostic! I replied.
You cant change your mind that
quickly and have it stick, he practically
snorted at me.
Well then look me up in a dozen years
and ask me again, I responded and walked
away. (Freshmen think they know it all.)
It was 20 years later but I did change
my mind.
There was a God. My mothers after-death communication had reassured
me of that fact. And in a year-long whirlwind of events, I devoured the book Many
Mansions (plus countless others), joined A
Search for God study group, and moved to
Virginia Beach with my family.
Edgar Cayces philosophy of life and
death fulfilled my many unanswered
questions. And later on, his health readings
saved my life. But though I had learned
from a good teacher, my Jewish heritage,
about love and guilt, karma sounded like
the ultimate guilt trip of them all.

A Course in Miracles (also referred to as The Course) is a book written and edited in the 1970s by
the late Helen Schucman, who claimed that an inner voice dictated the materialteachings
of Jesusto her. Consisting of three parts, The Course, as it is published in its new edition and
used by three million students worldwide, is a complete self-study spiritual thought system that
teaches forgiveness as the road to inner peace and the remembrance of God. As a curriculum
of spiritual transformation, it redefines miracles, forgiveness, love, illusion/truth, and has many
similarities to the Edgar Cayce readings.
18

With my talent for indulging in guilt, it

seemed I would be coming back for a long
timeif not foreverin a never-ending
cycle of lifetime after lifetime trying to free
myself from mistakes, past and present, in
order to deserve the right of becoming the
child of God I was intended to be.
It didnt seem right.
There had to be another way, or I was
doomed.
That led me to The Courseand another way.

TheWake-Up Call I was at home,

going downstairs in my socks on the carpeted steps, when my foot slipped out from
under me and I landed hard on my tailbone
and back. Unimaginable pain shot through
my body as I awkwardly lay there unable
to move. My first rational thought was to
get to my purse where I kept some arnica
(a homeopathic remedy no one should be
without) which helped somewhat, when
I eventually could get to it. I could tell nothing was broken, but everything was wrong.
If youre at all familiar with the Cayce
readings, you know you dont want to fall
on your tailbone. It can lead to all sorts
of complications. And in the months that
followed, I knew besides the continuing
hip and back pain, at age 66 cramps and
irregular uterine bleeding were part of the
consequences of the fall.
I did everything I knew to do: prayer,
spinal adjustments, castor oil and GlycoThymoline packs, with little improvement.
The pain, though not extreme, was unrelenting. Id rate it a 5 out of 10 that never
let up and wore on my soul.
Four months passed and there was no
change in my condition. After explaining
to my physician what I was going through,
and after doing the usual tests to rule out
uterine cancer because of the bleeding, she
suggested physical therapy. I had nothing
to lose and agreed to make an appointment
with the person she recommended.

A Turning Point

It was at this
point that I had picked up The Song of
Prayer and read that remarkable sentence
once again: Askto receive what is
already given; to accept what is already
there.
Suddenly two issues, intricately intertwined, came clearly to mind.
First, the way we typically pray is out

April-June 2015

of need or lack, hoping God will see fit to

fulfill it. But this sentence turned things
completely around. True prayer wasnt
where I had to entreat God, like a beggar,
for mercy (relief from pain or want) or earn
my good, growing through numerous lifetimes of suffering and pain, paying off my
accumulated debts. I just had to receive and
accept my true birthright and perfection
already waiting for me. It was a given at
the moment of our creation.
And second, I had to confess I didnt feel
as if I deserved it! In essence, I was refusing
it. I felt I wasnt a good enough person, no
matter what I did or didnt do. In addition
to that, was the belief that I was capable of
making God, my Father, angry or disappointed with me, causing Him to withhold
His Lovelike a human father might do,
not knowing any better.
Amazed by the thoughts congealing in
my mind but exhausted by the unrelenting
pain in my body, I gently lay down on my
bed.
Gods already given me everything I
truly need, I thought. I just have to let
it in.
I had to fight getting up, turning away
out of fear; fear that I would receive a stone
and not a piece of bread for my asking, fear
that my guilt made me unworthy.
And then I heard some lyrics of a song
when none was playing.
He loves me, he loves me. He loves me
like a rock, oh baby, he loves me! (Paul
Simons song with a gender change.)
Oh my God, what a sense of humor!
I laughed to myself and finally relaxed.
Not having any idea of just how to let
Gods love in, I lay there and tried to remember the times I had previously felt it.
There werent many, but I wouldnt forget
them. At least twice in a grocery store, as I
stood alone waiting in line, Gods love filled
me to overflowing and poured out of my
heart to blanket everyone and everything
that was there. Another time, in a dream,
I had felt Gods unconditional love touch
me.
Then it happened. I could feel the
warmth of Gods love enfolding me, while
my mind went into an overload of thoughts
of self-criticism and doubtutterly invalidated by Loves Presence.

The Miracle For a long time I lay

there laughing and crying simultaneously.

Im not sure how long it went on, but I

eventually got up from the bed and stood
there in awe.
It took only a moment before I realized
the pain I had had for so long was almost
gone. And at the same time I knew without
a doubt, that despite the relief, I needed to
go for physical therapy. I didnt question
my knowing. I just went. As it turned out,
the physical therapist was excellent and
prescribed some exercises that, within a
short time, addressed a muscle weakness I
had which needed correcting.
I look back now and wonder. Even as
grateful as I am, I still ask myself why didnt
I experience (or allow) a complete healing?
Was I not open for it? Why did I still know
I needed to go for physical therapy? Was
it part of a process I had to undergo so
I would understand healing sometimes
requires both true prayer and appropriate
(guided) application?
But most of all, I ask myself why havent
I returned to that place againthat place of
contact with a loving Godknowing He
just patiently waits for me to come home.
It might be I continue to question my
worthiness but that doesnt matter. God
doesnt. He knows that sooner or later I
wont settle for anything less than the full
Monty, the whole enchilada, the works!
I pray it will be soon for all of us.
Let thy inner self become more and
more aware of the peace, the harmony, the
coordination, the cooperation of Gods
love, Gods peace, Gods harmony, in thy
physical and thy mental beingnow!

Emerging from PTSD

WITH THE HELP OF

Edgar Cayce
B Y H A L TAY L O R

The beginning of my immersion in

the Edgar Cayce material was the
beginning of my healing.

It has been a long road.

20

EdgarCayce.org

Throughout my life I have been aware that I exhibit symptoms of ADHD

(Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), yet I knew that I was not a
candidate for that diagnosis. But, something was clearly not right; I just
could not put my finger on it. Recently I have come to realize what I have
been combating all of my life, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), and
I am sharing my story and what I found helpful, as the Cayce readings
tell us to donot because I am looking for sympathy but because I believe
it is good for all of us to be more open and honest about our lives and
experiences.
My particular story is a childhood trauma, but there are many
thousands of returning military personnel, and civilians, young and
old, who have undiagnosed and untreated PTSD.

WAS BORN IN A small town in

Kansas to two very beautiful people. My two sisters were three and
five years old. I ran across my fathers yearbook when I was about
16 and was shocked to see every
white space filled with girls asking him
for a date. He looked like Kirk Douglass
little brother, only better looking, and
danced like Fred Astaire. When I was
about four my mother grew weary, so I
am told, of his bringing women to our
home for entertainment, so she kicked
him out. He worked for the railroad so a
move out of town was easy for him, and
he moved to Kansas City where there
were a lot of bars with dancing. In short
order my mother had a boyfriend, and he
liked my sisters, but he did not like me, so
I was shipped off to live with my father.
We lived in one bedroom in an old
house, owned by an elderly couple whose
children had flown the coop years ago.
We shared a single bath with two other
train-men who rented the other two bedrooms upstairs. I saw my father twice a
day: once when the phone rang at six in
the morning to make sure all train-men
got to work on time, and when he came
home in the evening, showered, shaved,
and headed out to the bars. He made a
deal with the old couple to look after
me and feed me. They never spoke to me
and every evening for dinner I would be
served one chicken pot pie. I will not eat
a chicken pot pie to this day!
This house was fairly isolatedno
neighbors. I entertained myself during
the day by playing in the back yard. My
favorite toy was an old discarded dust
pan. I would collect dust in it and shake

April-June 2015

it at varying frequencies and watch how

the dirt would separate according to size.
But I was happy! This was my life and I
accepted it wholly. I loved my father and
although I did not see him very often, I
was happy when I did.
Then one day, my life changedfor
the worse. My father decided he would
give me a treat so he took me out to the
dance hall with him. I had a great time,
standing up in the booths (I was four,
remember) and drinking green rivers.
Then, the scene changed. Apparently
my father had danced with the wrong
woman because the next thing I knew
we were all in the alley; I knew there was
a problem but I wasnt sure what it was.
Then a man commenced to beat my dad
bloody while the 10 or so guys standing
around cheered him on. I ran desperately
from one set of kneecaps to the other
begging someone to stop the fight but
they wanted no part of stopping itthey
wanted more blood.
The next thing I remember, my father
and I were in the bathroom and I was
helping him clean the blood from his
face. I kept asking him, Are you all
right, Dad? Are you all right? To which
he replied, Yes. It always bothered me
that I did not remember the part between
where my dad was getting beaten and the
bathroom.

My Introduction to PTSD

PTSD is a well-known syndrome these

days, but it was not heard of when I was
four years old.
I recently took a class in the treatment
of PTSD.
I was shocked to learn that since the

My Symptoms of PTSD
I learned that mental health professionals
have compiled over the years a list of
eight or more symptoms a person must
exhibit before the diagnosis of PTSD can
be ascertained.
Some of the symptoms I carried through
my life, that I thought were just the way
I was included:
FearI never knew when someone
might show up out of nowhere and
beat me up. Yet I never backed away
from a conflict and was a very good
wrestler. I loved wrestling. At 120
pounds soaking wet in high school I
could beat most of the football players
on the mat. Even so, all of my wrestling
and all of my fights never quieted the
fear.
Inability to concentrateI graduated
with a degree in biology with a 3.7
grade point average in my major which
was quite good for someone who could
not read more than two pages without
falling asleep. I paid attention in class
and took excellent notes.
Temper bordering on violenttempered by the fact that I did not want
anybody to beat me up! Isnt that
ironic!
Could not walk into a bar or even a
movie theater without experiencing
considerable fear. My subconscious did
not differentiate.
Self-blame. I blamed myself for not
stopping the fight, and still do.
Inability to feel empathy.

incident with my father, I have been in

full possession of nearly every symptom
of PTSD for most of my life. I have
grown up a member in good standing
of the PTSD club of America. In my
20s I sought the help of a psychiatrist
for a while but that went nowhere. I
had also been married several times, but
was unable to maintain a relationship.
My experience has made me aware of
the need in our country of treating our
children as well as our adults who are
victims of war, trauma, or abuse.
Despite my disabling symptoms (see
sidebar), throughout my life I have been
21

in pursuit of enlightenment, although

I was not certain what it was. I found
myself attracted to Zen Buddhism as I
felt that held the most promise. Then
one weekend I was headed into my
local bookstore in search of books on
enlightenment and as I walked through
the door, instead of going to my usual
subject, philosophy, I walked to a different part of the store. As I approached
one shelf my hand reached up and pulled
out a bookwithout my conscious
consent! It was The Edgar Cayce Primer
by Herbert B. Puryear, PhD. I took one
look at it and said to myself, I know
about this fellow, he is a kook! I put it
back and proceeded to the intelligent
persons guides to enlightenment. As I
crouched down to examine the books on
the bottom shelf I suddenly found myself
standing and walking back to the same
place as before. Again, my hand reached
out and selected a book, without my consent or cooperation. I looked at it and to
my horror it was the same darned book!
I replaced it with more force this time, for
emphasis, and went back to my regular
spot. I was not there five minutes when
again I found myself walking back to the
Edgar Cayce book and for the third time
my hand pulled that book from the shelf!
OK! OK! I said to whoever was listening,
Ill read your darned book!
I took the book home, read it, and
have never looked back. From Cayce I
learned a recipe for enlightenment:
Meditation, prayer, service, and keeping
a dream journal. I also discovered ASFG
groups and promptly joined the nearest
one. The beginning of my immersion in
the Edgar Cayce material was the beginning of the healing of my PTSD. It has
been a long road.

ARMED WITH MY OWN private

road map I began in earnestI discovered the A.R.E. Library and borrowed a
mountain of books to read. My condo
was a treasure trove of books lying open
everywhere. I could not read them fast
enough. Then, some interesting things

I found myself walking

back to the Edgar Cayce
book for the third time.

was listening.

happened. My boss started his own
company and hired me as his first engineer. Thus I was working in an office by
myself writing software and designing
hardware, both very meditative endeavors; and the office was only a half mile
from my condo. So I began an unplanned
year-long retreat from society. I would
still have a date from time to time, but
I primarily stayed home and read. I became a monk in a condo in the middle
of Northern Virginia! My life consisted
of this routine:
Waking up, filling out my dream journal; 20 minutes of prayers; 20 minutes
of meditation; Light breakfast; Off to
work; Light lunch then run or swim for
20 minutes; Back to work, then home at
5:30; Read until around 9:00 then take
a hot bath, followed by: 20 minutes of
yoga, 20 minutes of prayer, 20 minutes of
meditation; Prepare my dream journal,
and off to dreamland.
After becoming a monk in the city,
my dreams began to change dramatically;

I began to have precognitive dreams and

astral projection dreams. Dreams began
helping me at work: I would see software
bugs in my dreams and was given clues
to my hardware problems. I had dreams
that seemed to be taking place in Greece,
with huge marble columns, desks, and
benches where we would be seated as
Edgar Cayce lectured. I was on a spiritual
fast track experiencing new things every
week.
Then after almost precisely a year, upon
walking from work, I felt an intense radiance coming from the sky. All I could do
was to stop and raise my hands to soak
up as much of the radiance as I could. I
stood there for who knows how long but
I recall thinking, Gee, if anybody sees
me standing here with my hands up in
the air they will think I am crazy. With
that thought the radiance ceased and I
went into my condo. Over the next few
weeks I realized that I had received communication during that experience, but it
was all non-verbal, and soaked into my
consciousness slowly over time.
Shortly after my emergence from that
life-changing year I remarried and have
been married for 26 years!

Hal with his wife of 26 years, Wendy.

I am delighted to relate that through

the last 25 years of meditation and
spiritual work I am (almost) normal.
One must accept the fact that our observations of ourselves are biased and
therefore the crazy person never fully
realizes their particular level of lunacy. I
would not change one second of my life
because I have learned a great deal and to
change any of it would erase my learning
experience.

April-June 2015

he Wellness and Rejuvenation

Retreat, offered twice a year at
Virginia Beach Headquarters, is where
miracles are experienced and we integrate
the wisdom that real health is far more
than physical well-being. One of these walking
miracles is Shelly, a participant in a recent
retreat.
Many years ago, she was in a serious auto
accidentshe was thrown from the car, which
then landed on top of her. As she tells it, I am
suffocating to death, as I lie under the car; I
had a moment of fear as I gasped for air, but
then God himself came to me. When God
came, all fear, all physical pain and discomfort
were immediately gone, and it was the most
peaceful moment in my life!
Shelly then told us what led her to the
retreat: Two-and-a-half years ago, I was
diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. At diagnosis, I had a large tumor in my colon, cancer
in several lymph nodes, and five tumors in my
liver. Over that time I had a foot of my colon
removed, six rounds of chemotherapy, the
right lobe of my liver removed, then six more
rounds of chemotherapy. My first PET scan after chemotherapy and surgeries showed a new
growth in my left lung. Surgery was no longer
an option and my oncologist recommended
chemotherapy again, but said that it would
likely only extend my life a few months.
Further PET scans showed metastatic
growths in other areas. She left her job, and
prayed daily for Gods will to be done with
me. I looked to the Lord for guidance and
peace. I wanted the healing that came to me
when I was under the car, thinking that my
body was crushed and that I was dying. My
comfort with death took away all fear of dying. Since that previous experience with death,
I have trusted that God would take care of me,
no matter what.
Turning to holistic medicine, she began
using a natural form of mistletoe therapy, a

healthy diet, moderate outdoor exercising, and

consistently deep heartfelt prayerShelly said
she knew that God was with me and that He
was taking care of me.
The holistic doctor recommended that she
find a meditative type of retreat to attend, to
get in touch with what was going to be best
for her, which is whatever Gods will was for
her to do with her treatment. Again, Gods
hand was on me and I miraculously ended up
at the Wellness Week Retreat of the A.R.E. in
Virginia Beach. When Shelly and I first met
there, we prayed together; and I believe, she
said, that God [then] planted a seed of hope
for a complete healing in me.
Shelly believes that real healing involves
our mind, body, and spirit. I also believe that
complete healing comes from God and it is
only when we surrender to God, and pray
for his will to be done, that God is able to use
whatever illness you are struggling with, to
bring about complete peace. It is amazing how
freedom from fear heals our mind, body, and
spirit! Thanks be to God!
Then the attitudes of the body: Know that
there is within self all healing that may be
accomplished for the body. For, all healing
must come from the Divine. For who healeth
thy diseases? The source of the Universal
supply. As the attitude, then, of self, how well
do ye wish to be? How well are ye willing to
cooperate, coordinate with the Divine influences which may work in and through thee,
by stimulating the centers which have been
latent with natures activities. For, all of these
forces must come from the one source, and
the applications are merely to stimulate the
atoms of the body. For each cell is as a representative of a universe in itself. Then what
would ye do with thy abilities? As ye give to
others, not hating them, to know more of the
Universal Forces, so may ye have the more,
for, God is love.
Do that, and ye will bring bettered conditions for yourself. Work where you are. As
was given to those who were called, The
ground upon which ye stand is holy. Begin
where you are. If there are the needs for other
environs, these will be shownwill be given
thee. (4021-1)

SPIRITUAL ACTIVATION
Reliving Profound Spiritual Experiences

Imagine for a moment your most profound

spiritual experience. Maybe it was a transcendent
meditation. Perhaps it was a moment in natural beauty where time
stood still and you somehow merged with your surroundings. Could
it be you had an experience holding a baby, watching your pet, or
listening to a piece of music, and found your heart was suddenly
flooded and your eyes filled with tears? In the aftermath, everything was
different for a few moments or hours, maybe even a few days. What if
you could re-experience that moment any time you wanted?

You can.

BY GREGG UNTERBERGER, MEd, LPC

Spiritual Activation and
Brainspotting

Since 2008, I have been developing a technique called spiritual activation, rooted in a
therapeutic modality called Brainspotting.
Brainspotting is increasingly being used
around the world by thousands of psychotherapists like me, to treat emotional trauma
in an accelerated fashion. But Brainspotting
can also be used to rapidly build self-esteem and self-confidence by strengthening
existing neural networks associated with
successful experiences from the past. In
fact, Dr. David Grand, the developer of
the technique, was recently featured on an
ESPN documentary, curing a famous athlete
of crippling performance anxiety. Part of
how Dr. Grand uses Brainspotting for peak
performance is to ask someone to think of
24

a time when they were calm and successful

as an athlete and then use the modality to
replay the neural networks involved.
Like the notion that through repetition,
you never forget how to ride a bicycle, Dr.
Grand believes we can strengthen memories
of self-worth and self-confidence so that we
never forget our strengths and abilities.
At my initial Brainspotting training, I
wondered: What if we took a spiritual experience and looped it in the brain, playing
the neural networks of enlightenment over
and over? What would happen? Could
we relive the experience? Could we take it
even deeper? If, in fact, meditation develops
certain circuits in our brain to access our
spirituality through repetition, might this
be a shortcut, a way to hotwire our brains
to God?

Or could we even hardwire our brains

to God?
Traveling across the country as a presenter for the A.R.E. has given me the
opportunity to see the spiritual activation
technique utilized successfully in my workshops in a group setting and offer profound
results with individual clients, like the following session:

Angela and the 50-Foot Angel Angela

(name and some details changed to protect
confidentiality) came to me for a single
three-hour session. She was a slight woman
in her 70s with a kind smile, a gentle bearing, and a penchant for brightly colored
scarves. Angela came to see me because
she had given birth to her eldest son in the
1960s and had barely lived to tell about it.
EdgarCayce.org

She wanted to go back to that experience to

find out what happened. After we reviewed
her general history, I encouraged her to tell
the story in detail.
This was years ago, Gregg. Hospital
care wasnt exactly kind and compassionate
back then. As a woman, I wasnt given much
credence as a patient. I was more like a job
to be completed, she said, her thin lips
pursing tightly over her teeth.
How so? I asked curiously.
Well, I told the doctor the baby was
coming, and he didnt believe me. He waved
his hand as though to dismiss me and said
he was going to dinner. I felt frightened and
so alone. But then I shrieked in pain as I felt
the baby suddenly move in my body. Again,
the doctor said I was overreacting, but as he
bent over to take a look, I literally exploded,
splattering blood all over his face. I have
never known such pain in my life. I thought
I really might die.
I am sure the look on my face was a mix
of concern, amazement, and incredulity.
How could a doctor be so insensitive? It
was another era. And yet, I had heard those
kinds of stories from other clients, even now.
One of my fathers friends, a doctor, used
to joke: You know surgeons, never in
doubt, occasionally wrong.
Theres more, she paused, looking tentatively at her feet. I hope you dont think
Im crazy, she added timidly.
Many of my clients tell me, I have never
told anyone this, not even my old therapist. I
was afraid he would lock me up! But while
things like hearing an inner voice, spontaneously remembering past lives or seeing the
spirit of a deceased loved one might make
another counselor concerned for their clients sanity, these kinds of stories are pretty
much an ordinary day at the office for me.
Still, I could tell Angela was nervous and I
waited a moment for her to look up. I smiled
gently and reassuringly. She continued.
Well, just before I passed out completely,
I had the strangest sense of peace in the face
of the pain. AndI swear to God, I am not
making this upI saw what appeared to be
the robe of a giant angel. As I looked up over
my feet in the stirrups, immediately behind
the doctor, I saw this radiant white robe that
filled the floor of the entire room behind
him. I mean, just as I am giving birth to my
son, there was this figureI dont know,
maybe 50 feet tall or something. An angel,
April-June 2015

I guess. She took a deep breath, obviously

moved by the memory. But I passed out
before I could even look upwards to see
who it was.
Angela paused and then leaned forward
with the smallest of grins on her weathered
face and a bit of mischief in her eyes.
You know what, Gregg? Ive always
wanted to know what that was. And when
you talked in the lecture about spiritual
activation, I felt compelled to work with
you. I want to go back and find out what
happened.
I smiled at Angela, admiring her courage
and curiosity in coming to me. But I did feel
a twinge in my stomach, and I knew I need-

What if we took a spiritual

experience and looped it in
the brain, playing the neural
networks of enlightenment
over and over? Could we even
hardwire our brains to God?
ed to give voice to it. I was playing with fire.
We can do this, I said earnestly. But I
need to remind you that we arent just going
back to the angel experience. The setting in
which this happened was a very traumatic
one. As we turn your awareness towards
this moment, the horror of that pain may
become real again. You might re-experience
the sadness and anguish in that moment.
We might trigger a flashback. It could get
messy.
Angela nodded understandingly with a
determined look. Thats okay.
On balance, I said, if its still encoded
as trauma, we will likely desensitize ita
good thingand there is still the possibility
of transcending the pain and going deeper
into the spiritual realm.
I trust you, Gregg.
Thank you, Angela. I just want to make
sure you go into this with your eyes open.
I was astonished at what happened next.
I had Angela imagine the moment, the
blood splattering the doctor, the feelings of
assuredness alongside of terror and sharp
pain. I steeled myself for the possibility of
a flashback that we would have to unravel.
I engaged Angela in the spiritual activation

process, using special music to create a resonance between the hemispheres of her brain,
called BioLateral sound, while simultaneously engaging an eye position that would
potentially re-catalyze the emotional state
and memory of the experience by triggering
the neural networks involved in the original
revelation.
But I held my breath: Would the traumatic memory envelop her? If so, could we
resolve the trauma and re-activate her peak
experience?
Almost instantly, my question was answered. Within a few seconds, my office
had vanished from her awareness. Within
minutes, the hospital room was gone from
her mind, too, leaving the trauma behind.
And although her eyes were open; her
consciousness entered another dimension.
I had an intuitive feeling that this session
might be important. So as Angela stared
into space, I grabbed my pen and clipboard,
attempting my best Gladys Davis Turner
imitation. What follows is not a recreation
from my memory, but an actual word-forword transcript of what happened to Angela
as she explored the realms of light.
I dont know where I am. Everything
around me is a big pink fog. I cant hear
the baby crying anymore. [Its like I am in]
nothingnessits very, very pleasant.
She paused, breathing easily, apparently
drawing in the energy.
I am in the top of what I saw [the giant
angel], I am in that. I dont have any cares,
no worries. I am at one with this energy.
Angela began breathing faster, a beatific
smile blossoming over her wrinkled face.
Tears slipped over her lower lids.
Oh, I am so loved, I am so loved. I had
no idea that anybody cared this much.
She started to weep uncontrollably. The
convulsions lasted for several minutes. She
was overwhelmed. Then she got very quiet
for a minute or two.
I can see a pinpoint of light. Her eyes
widened as a look of wonder came over her.
Moments passed.
Im in a really white light now. She
frowned as though studying something.
Theres movement around me. I see these,
like, orbs of light. They are very familiar. I
see a lot of golden light and movement. Her
smile blossomed again.
I am supposed to be here. She nodded
resolutely. I know them. Im looking to see
25

I have been here before. This is where I belong.

if my son is here, but I cant make out any
faces. She paused.
I feel like I am in a vast place and out
beyond this light its totally black. Her head
tilted. There is someone close to me. Who
are you? Wowa very bright gold light. Its
grabbing me up in its gold. Im being embraced. Oh. Oh! Angela began to breathe
faster. Rhythmically.
I am being filled up inside mepumped
full of this light. It feels so wonderful. She
beamed. Then suddenly her expression
changed to one of longing.
The gold is backing awayWait
dont go! She paused, being drawn to
someplace new. I cant see all the people.
It feels like I am far off in outer space. Way
off, there are needle pricks of light. I am
not afraidit is so infiniteso big. There
was a sudden intake of breath, a reaction
to the enormousness of the experience. As I
heard it, I remembered taking a breath like
that when I first saw the Grand Canyon. I
was overwhelmed by the huge chasm, very
literally taken aback. Then, as I watched,
she settled down again.
I am back in the pinkpurple now, she
reported. Light and dark purple. Its close
around me like I am part of it. I amI am
a part of this, a part of all of this. I see these
orbs floating aroundnow they are circling
me. She smiled broadly, amused. They are

playing with me! I feel this little showering

of all these lights all over me, she squealed
with delight in the voice of a four-year-old.
Yellow, now. The gold orb is back; its
right in my face. Its huge, it encompasses
all my vision. Theres a form inside. A face?
Or what? I cant see what it is. There was
a long pause.
Its not like a body. Its someone. Im being pulled into it. Yes. Yes. She was smiling,
laughing uncontrollably. After a minute or
so she caught her breath, able to find words,
able to reflect. This is so familiar, so comforting. Her voice drew down to almost
a whisper. Her tone reflected a reverence
and surety.
I have been here before. This is where
I belong.
We sat in a deep silence for several
minutes. The look of wonder on her face
was that of a very young child seeing a
Christmas tree for the first time. Her expression radiated love.
I feel like I am being pulled back, she
commented with a slight sadness. There is
a dark hole. I was there. I was right back to
where I belonged.
Her tone implied an acceptance of her
true home in some other spiritual realm
and also of the unalterable truth that she
still lived in the material world. Angela
took several deep easy breaths. She looked
around the room for several minutes as
though returning to this reality. I remained
in silence, honoring the moment, unwilling
to break the stillness. Finally she spoke,
somehow looking at me, but through me.
Its like always knowing that there is
something else, she said in a far-away voice.
I think Ive always known there was more
to life than the material world. But today, I
felt what it was. Its real.

A Life-Changing Reality

Angelas words struck me. Often

when people have deep near-death
experiences, when asked if it
felt like a dream or a hallucination, they say it felt real,
more real than the everyday
waking reality. Some NDE
experiencers like Dannion
Brinkley and Dr. Eben
Alexander tell stories of a
hyper-reality realm: flowers

26

that sing, colors you can feel. And so much

of it, somehow beyond words, beyond
explanation: ineffable. This is what Angela
had experienced.
So what really happened to Angela during
our session? Maybe she used her memory as
a conduit to tune in to another dimension.
Maybe the entire experience was an actual
memory of a near-death experience that
happened at her sons birth that she had
blocked or forgotten. And I couldnt rule
out that this was all a figment of her imagination, although I wondered where such
imagery would come from. If she was going
to make it up, why not see Jesus or God or at
least the face of the 50-foot angel? If she was
creating a happy fantasy, why not see her
son, whom she was looking for so intently?
If this was all wish fulfillment, why not see
who was inside the golden bubble? It didnt
make sense to me.
Of course, no one can be sure. But you
can be sure that Angela was completely
convinced of a Higher Power that was there
at her sons birth and is with her now. She
believes that heaven is a real place and is
her real home. Not only did she experience
it, she remembered it. It was familiar; it felt
familiar. For Angela, what you or I think
doesnt matter.
Her life will be forever changed.

ANCIENT MYSTERIES
BY JOHN VAN AUKEN

Kabbalah

Our Enlightened Minds

The other planes are not reached by traveling to them but by developing awareness of themby an intuitive knowing that results from our
enlightened mind. And contemplative prayer is the means.

dgar Cayces teachings contain much akin to Kabbalistic

teachings. For example, both
teach that life is continuous, there
is no death of the soul, and that many dimensions of life extend beyond this physical
one. Both teach that all life emanates from
the Creator, and that God-consciousness is
ever available to us because we are vessels
of the Creators intrinsic nature.
The life force of God, Kabbalahs Infinite
Eternal, flows from the unseen Creator
throughout all of the observable creation;
and does so in a specific pattern. That
pattern is depicted in the Kabbalah Tree
of Lifes (see illustration #1). This Tree
reveals the Infinite Eternal through 10
emanations. The Tree of Life and the 10
emanations are the mystical image of
God (tselem Elohim). And since we were
initially created in the image of God (as
recorded in Genesis 1:26), the emanations
and the Trees pattern reveal how we are
constructed and how the Life Energy flows
through usthe vessels of God. Think of
these emanations as both beaming Light
from God and vessels that may contain this
Light and reflect it back to God.

The Great I AM and the

Little I am

Like Cayce, Kabbalah conveys a fascinating creation story. As the scientific

theory has the Big Bang, Kabbalah teaches
that the creation burst forth from the
darkness of the deep with such intense
brilliance, awesome power, and extreme
velocity, that it broke wide open all the
April-June 2015

vessels that were to contain the Light of

Creation. This was called the Breaking of
the Vessels (shevirat ha-keilim). The vessels were unable to contain the magnitude
of the Lightexcept for the 10th vessel:
the I am that had been conceived in the
image of the Great I AM. Like a mirror,
the Little I am was able to reflect back to
the Great I AM the awesome Light of Life.
In this way a complete connection was
established between the Source of Life and
the Vessel of that Life.
Once contained in the heart and mind of
the Little I am, the exploding Light gathered all the shards of the broken vessels and
repaired them! Miraculously the image of
God was then expressed for all of creation
to comprehend. Notice the pathway from
the 1st emanation to the 10th and back
again? That is the established conduit between God and us.
Like Cayces teachings, Kabbalah explains that the original Little I am was the
First Beingwhat we know today as the
Logos, the Word (in John, chapt. 1), and
the Messiah-Christ. The infinite, unseen
creative force of God found its complementary reflection in the First Being. And
we are beings within the First Being, within
the Messiah-Christ-Logos-Word. Jesus,
speaking as the Christ/Logos, taught: At
that time it will be clear to you that I am in
the Father, and you are in me, and I in you.
(John 14:20) The Infinite-All of the Creator
and the finite beings that we are, actually
exist in magical, mysterious oneness! As a
result, God-consciousness is always available to us, for within it we exist.

Harmony of Trinities

Before the repair of the broken vessels,

chaos reigned. As the Light flowed back
to its Source, order was reestablished. The
Infinite was now revealed in the finite via
harmony. According to Kabbalah, this
harmonic connection was achieved by
hinging influences that appear to be
opposing one another. When hinged by a
third influence the opposites form a harmonious trinity. Notice the triangles of triads
in illustration #2.
For example, looking at the illustration
you see that Understanding (Hebrew tebunah) is hinged to Wisdom (chokmah)
by the Great I AM, thus bringing the
developmental discernment that leads to
Understanding in harmony with the innate condition of Wisdom. This forms the
Celestial Triad. Next youll see how Balance
hinges Might with Loving-kindness, indicating that though we must be strong
within ourselves, shielded from negative
influences, we also must be lovingly kind.
This is the Moral Triad. And finally youll
see that Bonding hinges the Glory of our
inborn Godly nature with the Fortitude
(endurance) necessary to walk the journey
from immature souls to eternal companions with our Creator. This is the Mundane
Triadwhich gives a much higher purpose
to our mundane life than we may realize.
With all of these vessels repaired, in
harmony, illuminated, energized, and consciously awakened, Light and Life flows
evenly throughout the creationfrom
the Creator to the created and back again.
27

ANCIENT MYSTERIES
You see, from a Kabbalistic perspective,
sin is when the flow is broken, i.e., the
harmony lost. To restore health and wellbeing, reunion of the energy between the
vessel of life and the source of life must be
achieved. By understanding this holistic
principle and applying it in our lives, we
gradually become more heavenly, more
eternalless temporary, less materialistic,
and less constrained by physical reality and
self-centeredness. As our consciousness
expands and our heavenly heart grows, the
Light of Life flows through us with strength
and vigor, further illuminating our minds
and enlivening our hearts. Life, love, and relationships are in harmony. When we apply
these principles properly in our daily lives,
we naturally become better people: better
friends, neighbors, spouses, and parents.
We gain a rare patience that changes the
very dynamic of physical life and imbues
us with our Creators Light.

Planes of Existence

Many of us have come to understand

the differences in states of consciousness
and dimensions of life; the difference between a materialistic mind with its focus
on physical reality, and its opposite, an
enlightened mindresulting in feelings
beyond self-centeredness, self-gratification,
and self-exaltation. When we are enlightened, we have musical appreciation, quality
love relationships, and awareness and care
beyond our own little world. We comprehend the laws governing the universe, while
others just live in it, not aware of what is
involved. Today we grasp the concept of
paradigms, archetypes, mental constructs,
and emotional patterns. We can appreciate

theoretical frameworks which point to

unseen influences upon reality.
Now we might quickly use the term
states of consciousness but we need to retain some of the qualities of this world, for
Cayces readings warn that even in higher
dimensions where the physical body does
not exist, there are magnetic-like forces
that create a vessel-like field for each soulminda type of nonphysical body. Cayce
teaches that the physical plane is not so
much different from the other planes; it is a
shadow of them. When in the other planes,
our individualness is not as encased as it is
in a physical body, because our individual
consciousness can expand into infinity and
back again at will! We can be both finite
and infinite. This is achieved through our
enlightened mind. And heres the exciting
news: this can be experienced right here,
right now! We dont have to physically die
to experience all of the planes of life because
our enlightened mind does the traveling.
Lets examine more closely Kabbalahs
planes where personal consciousnesses with
body-like orbs of beingness may experience
multi-dimensional lifesomething we will
eventually do forever.
Here are the planes that are common to
most Kabbalistic texts. In illustration #2
youll notice how they correlate with the
Triads, except for the lowest plane, which
is where you and I live today!

The central realm of existence is the

Plane of Emanation. It is both the origin
and destiny of the sons and daughters of

Kabbalah Tree of Life
Life unites with the Hidden Source of
Life. Here we may know oneness with
the Infinite Eternal. This is the plane of
the Divine Personae (partzufim) and the
Brilliant Light. Here is the realm of the
Infinite, the Omnipotent, All-knowing,
Universal Mind and Spirit. All of creation
is in this plane but in its uncontaminated
state, pure as the moment in which it was
divinely conceived. The perfection of this
realm is not affected by what goes on in
the lower realms. Cayce agrees, stating that
our perfect, in-the-image-of-God self, has
not been contaminated by anything. To
perceive this realm is to be in ecstasy, bliss,
nirvana, samadhi, and all the other terms
humans have used to describe the peace
that passes understanding, the contentment that brings enduring happiness.

2. Plane of Creation (Olam Briah)

The Light of Creation gave life to the

Plane of Creation. That which came out
of the deep expresses its qualities in this

sciousness, not bodies. This is the plane of

angels and the Orphanim (Never-sleeping
Watchers/Guardians). Here we find the
laws that shape the patterns of creation and
form the seven heavens, seven ages, seven
chakras (though not yet physical), and so
on. Here we find the higher element of
ether, or akasha in Sanskrit; this is the most
subtle and expansive of the five elements
(earth, water, fire, air, and ether). Every
thought, word, and action of every soul
makes an impression upon the akasha, and
records its Book of Remembrance.

4. Plane of Action (Olam Asiyah)

The fourth plane is the Plane of Action.

It is the physical realm where the created
souls engage their wills to do as they desire
and experience the reactionwhich we
know to be karma: What goes around,
comes around. In this realm we find the
physical universe, particularly our galaxy.
This plane is also called the Elemental
Plane of Substance. At all times in this
plane there are Light Forces struggling
against dark influenceseach attempting
to possess of the hearts and minds of the
developing souls.

5. Plane of Repairing and Perfecting

called Lights; in this plane they are called
Spiritsand are divine beings. A portion of
us exists on this plane. Here is the domain
of First Being, within which we have our
beingness, but at a divine level.

The third plane is the Plane of Formation.

April-June 2015

This brings us to the forces of Repairing

and Perfecting Plane. In Lurianic Kabbalah
there is this fifth plane. Remember the
vessels that shattered because they could
not contain and reflect the original Light
of God? Well their shards became sparks
of light trapped in the material world.
Contemplative prayer releases the sparks
and allows them to flow to Gods Light,
thus repairing and restoring Gods Essence
throughout. Like Cayce, the Kabbalah encourages contemplative prayer, which we
would consider to be prayer mingled with
meditative receptivity to the Divine Light.

Cayce and the Planes

Cayces teachings often address planes.

In one reading he confirms the Kabbalahs
four planes and then in another reading he
lists five, as found in Lurianic Kabbalah.
But Cayce also indicates that there are
more planes!
In most every group that has approached such subjects, planes are rarely
understood. They are accounted as to the

first, second, third, fourth, fifth plane; yet

we find these [are] onlythe beginnings
of the activities of those influences of the
souls of men. (507-2) He explains: In
flesh must the entity manifest and make
the will one with the Godand as such development reaches that plane wherein the
development may pass into other spheres
and systems, of which our solar system is
only a small part; thenthe entity must
develop in that sphere until it (the entity)
has reached that stage wherein it may manifest through the spiritual planes. (900-25)
According to Cayces teachings our soul
must progress through all the planes to
become completely conscious of and companionable to our Creator.
In one reading (900-355) Cayce correlates planes of conditions with phases
of consciousness: growth and transformation occur within the mind as we progress
through various phases of awareness and
understanding. The other planes are not
reached by traveling to them but by developing awareness of them. Such awareness
may not be fully in our conscious mind
except by an intuitive knowing that results
from our enlightened mind. And contemplative prayer is the means.
Each soul sojourns in nonphysical
realms or planes and incarnates into the
physical world for the same dual purpose
of enlightening the mind and enlivening
the heart. Each of us eventually becomes
companionable to our Creator, who loves
us and longs for our conscious companionship, sharing the gift of Life.

The Spirit of Giving:

Making a Difference through the A.R.E.
From Development Director Patrick Belisle

CREATE Campaigns Final YearBringing It Home

2015 Priorities: Our Program
Initiatives and Library/Conference
Center Renovations

Yes, its true that the CREATE Campaign

is mostly raising funds for A.R.E.s programs
and endowments (see the thrilling news of
Cassie Tarsias $1 million donation on page
32), but by far the most visible projects have been the buildings.
First came the beautiful new Don and Nancy de Laski Education
Centerhome to Atlantic University, Cayce/Reilly School of
Massage, and the Edgar Cayce Foundation. Then came the
beautiful renovation of the Cayce Hospital buildingwith its
updated Health Center & Spa and Cayce/Miller Caf. At the same
time, we completely built out our Houston A.R.E. Center to get
its Health Center into full gear.
In 2015 we will raise $1.5 million for the final renovation projectour vintage 1975 Library and Conference Center in Virginia
Beach. When Hugh Lynn Cayce built it that year, it was the A.R.E.s
crown jewel. We have been polishing up our tarnished crown
and this Visitor Center will be our final touch.

Coming HomePilgrimage to Virginia Beach

Do you remember your first visit to A.R.E. Headquarters? I sure

do. What was your impression? Every visitor arrives at our doors
full of hope and reverence and expectancy. As stewards of the
Association, you and I want our visitors to have the best possible
experience and leave with a positive impression on all fronts. Our
Visitor Center needs your help.

Help Us Make the Leap from 1975 to 2015

Yes, retro is in.

And, yes, it is hard
to find our Librarys
shade of green carpeting in stores today.
But lets all agree, this
building needs to be
updated. Do our visitors think, Wow!
when they walk in or
do they think, This
place really used to be

something? Lets be sure its Wow!

The sign above the buildings entrance reads, To manifest the
love of God and Man[kind]. As you come into the lobby, our
bookstore/gift shop is on your right as is our upgraded Welcome
Desk. Across the open space, past the Scarlett OHara staircase,
is a wall full of informational brochures. We want to update this
first floor to make it more welcoming, engaging, and interactive.
We will also expand our popular gift shop.

Each year, thousands

of seekers attend our
inspiring conferences inside our Bill and Fonchen
Lord Auditorium. In
order to make their experience meaningful and
memorable, we have
already upgraded the
look of our auditorium
and the high-definition
technology that brings
it to youwhether you are in Virginia Beach or watching via
live-streaming at home. We want to expand the auditorium to
allow more participants as our conferences do often sell out, and
we are currently limited.

Library and Meditation RoomAncient Egypt

Renewed

Not since the Library at Alexandria have so many seekers had

access to so much metaphysical information as can be found in
your A.R.E. Library. It really is one of the worlds unsung treasures.
And, perhaps, not since we all meditated with our soul group in
Ra Tas Egypt have we had a meditation room where we could
gather again to find peace, inner wisdom, and healing. This
room sits atop this stone building like a modern-day capstone
of the Great Pyramid. Both of these spaces need your help. From
the well-worn green carpeting and chairs to the various special
collections we steward in the Library, it is time to give these spaces
the love they deserve.

The Last Shall Be First

Most of us dont think about things like restrooms or air

conditioning until they break down! Do you know how far
heating and air conditioning have come in 40 years? Wed like
to find out by installing a new HVAC unit. And, have you ever
tried to squeeze into one of our tiny restroom stalls?! Lets do ourselves a favor and

Prison Program Extends Outreach

By Karen Boldt, Outreach Supervisor

fter carefully analyzing the programs new database,

we have launched a special new library project, which
will help us to triple our outreach numbers. One of our most
generous donors, Richard Copeland, has pledged to fund the
extended library project for our top five states: California,
Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia. With the Copeland
gift, we will be able to send our core books to 169 new facilities
with the potential to reach over a quarter of a million inmates.
This project is also developing relationships with institutional
libraries and librarians, who work with these men and women on a daily basis. This will also allow us to fulfill personal
requests of inmates while still providing a constant stream of
new uplifting materials to their libraries for thousands of other
inmates to enjoy for years to come.
The current format will not be abandoned, just expanded.
The program will continue to send individual books to inmates
in all 50 states both with and without libraries as it has for over
40 years. The Edgar Cayce material provided by the program
has helped lift countless imprisoned souls into the light, book by
book. And their letters prove that it works:
My name is Javier and I have no particular request in mind. I
have never written or even thought of writing a publication. There
was no need to til now. Writing this letter is the least A.R.E. and
its staff deserve. Know that your efforts are making a difference.
Ive spent the last 30 months in isolation and if that was my price
to pay to have discovered the A.R.E., it was well worth it, maybe
even a bargain. A.R.E. and its writings just feel right to me. My
feelings and thoughts feel verified. I feel a lot better now that Ive
put A.R.E.s writings into practice. Life will be better from now
on. Better late than never, right? A.R.E. has made a definite
change in my life, for the better. My hope is that more people will
become aware of A.R.E. and its works. It would make the world
a better stay, for sure. Look forward to my spiritual growth with
God and A.R.E. by my side. This letter of appreciation is meant
for all of A.R.E. and its staff.
This newly launched library
project and the Prison Outreach
Program itself would not be possible without the resourcefulness
of our staffKaren Boldt and
Opal Rogers; and the dedication
of our volunteersErma Cook,
Ann Clapp, Mona Forney, and
Brenda Serniak. And of course,
Opal Rogers and Erma Cook
the support of our members
through your donations of money, time, energy, and prayer is
crucial to keeping this important work flowing through the bars
of prisons everywhere.

84th Annual Members Congress:

Bringing the Edgar
Cayce Readings to LIFE!

lanning is well underway

for our 84th annual A.R.E.
members Congress, to be held
June 21-26. The traditional
opening day picnic and social
promises to be a delicious way
to start the week, with freshly-prepared, locally-sourced
food provided by our new
Leaping Lizard Caf in the
beautiful Cayce-Miller Caf,
located in the newly remodeled
hospital building. This years
themeBringing the Edgar
Cayce Readings to LIFE!will
focus on favorite concepts from
the Cayce readings, presented
by beloved speakers Sidney and
Nancy Kirkpatrick (who will
also be live-streamed online for
viewers at home), Mark Thurston, PhD, Peter Woodbury,
MSW, and many others.
Many Congress attendees
make it a tradition to attend
every year, and the week often

has the feel of a homecoming

or reunion. New Congress attendees can join Toni Romano
on Sunday for an orientation
that will help them understand
what to expect from all the
exciting programs, options, and
activities the week contains. A
number of special workshops
are planned which include
presentations from James
Mullaney, Carol Chapman,
and Nancy Chrisbaum. There

will also be optional activities

including a healing session with
the Glad Helpers, and, weather
permitting, sand packs. And of
course, traditions such as the
fun-raising live and silent auctions, sharing groups, talent and
variety show, and social dance
will continue. The week will end
with a closing ceremony specially designed to help everyone
leave feeling loved, energized,
and united in fellowship.
Open to all, Congress tuition
is just $85 for six activity-packed
days. Congress relies on contributions to cover expenses, and is
seeking donations of substantial
new or like-new items such
as artwork, jewelry, antiques,
Cayce-related items, collectibles,
gift cards, and one-of-a-kind
items for the auction. Send donations to Congress, in care of
Kristie Holmes, 215 67th Street,
Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
A special pre-Congress
Saturday event, to be held
on June 20, will feature Jerry
Lazarus presenting Edgar
Cayce on the Wisdom of
Dreams: Listening to the Voice
of God. Dreams and their
message or meaning are a core
component of the Cayce readings, and an important tool for
spiritual and personal growth.
Attendees of this workshop
will gain valuable insights into
the messages and meaning of
their dreams. A special discount will be available for those
who attend both Congress and
Lazaruss program.

Cassina Tarsia pledges $1 million to

create new healing center
By Kevin. J. Todeschi

edicated Cayce student and longtime A.R.E. member

Cassina Cassie Tarsia of Oceanside, California has
pledged $1 million toward the creation of the A.R.E.s new
Tarsia Center. Under development now, the Center will offer programs in emotional processing, healing, integration,
and wholeness. Think of it as a modern-day Temple of
Initiation, like the one in ancient Egypt, described in the
Cayce readings. The Centers Ideal: Creation of a state of
oneness with the Creative Forces by awakening the heart
and soul forces, connecting with the whole, and attaining
harmony of being.

Patrick Belisle with Cassie Tarsia

We expect the first program to be offered by the Center in

January of 2016. I am working closely with former A.R.E.
Board Chair Eileen Malo and Cayce expert Lynn Sparrow
Christy to develop a program for this transcendent healing
center initially called the Program for Integrative Wholeness
and Transformative Growth. Eileen possesses an extensive
background in health administration as well as advanced
training and experience in both spiritual mentorship and
personal coaching. Lynn possesses an extensive background
in one-on-one spiritual mentorship, coaching, personal
transformation and hypnotherapy. This program will be
offered to participants who are ready to commit one full
year to focus on their personal, spiritual, and emotional
developmenta serious commitment to a process that is
designed to bring serious results. And we are thrilled about
the possibilities.
By offering something new to the world, Cassie is also
helping us achieve the goals we set out at the beginning
of our multi-year CREATE Campaignnamely to bring
the Cayce Work out to the world in a whole new way. Her
donation takes us past the $26.5 million mark in our $30
million Campaign which ends this December.
Thank you, Cassie! We just cant thank you enough. Many
future generations will be grateful to you.

Cassie Tarsias donation fulfills a dream

t started with a whisper. Longtime

member Cassina Cassie Tarsia
wrote a short note to Development
Director Patrick Belisle, saying, It has
been my dream to create a unique
healing centerbut now I dont
have the time or energy to do it.
Perhaps I could, instead, share some
of what I have accumulated with the
A.R.E. (so you can create it).
Cassies note set off a chain of
synchronistic events whichin just
a matter of monthsculminated
with her pledge of $1,000,000
to create and endow the Tarsia
Centera transcendent healing
center with a focus on identifying,
processing and releasing patterns
of thought, emotion and behavior
from this and past lifetimes.
Perhaps the main synchronistic
event during that period was the
lunch Kevin Todeschi coincidentally had with former A.R.E. Board
Chair Eileen Malo. Eileen told him
about a program she hoped to
develop that would work with a
very small group of people who
are interested in deep growth and
healing over a 12-month cycle of
on-site and telephone/internet
based work. Kevin told her about
Cassies interest and Eileen mentioned that she believed she and

Cayce expert Lynn Sparrow Christy

would be interested in creating a
program that could combine their
interests and Cassies.
Phone meetings, foundational documents, and a visit from
Patrick Belisle to Cassies home in
Oceanside, Calif., ensued. And the
rest, as they say, is history.
The first program sponsored by
the Tarsia Center will be the Journey
to Wholeness and Integrative
Growthfacilitated by Malo and
Christy. The program is scheduled
to launch in January of 2016.Watch
for more details about the program at EdgarCayce.org and in this
magazine.
As a joyful side note, Cassie
made her first pledge payment
(more than $500,000) with a donation of 27 pounds of gold coins!
Todeschi and Belisle had a ball
counting it with Finance Director
Brenda Butler and her staff. Theres
nothing like stacks of gold to epitomize abundance and make you
realize that the A.R.E. is being well
taken care of by the Creative Forces
through our members, Todeschi
said. We are very grateful.
Thank you, Cassie. Your earnest
whisper has become our inspiration
and hope for the future.

A.R.E. TOURS VISITS CUBA!

By John Van Auken

ow that the relationship between the U.S. and Havana has

warmed and the travel restrictions have eased, the A.R.E.
Tour department (EdgarCayce.org/tours) conducted its first tour
of this island remnant of ancient Atlantis, with me as the tour
leader. We went this past February, an ideal month to visit because
the weather is mild and the crops are high for harvesting. We saw
fields of corn, sugar cane, pineapple, tobacco, and orchards ripe
with bananas, plantains, guava, and limes.
The people have a long history of hoping for a better tomorrow
while living a challenging today. Each cycle of prosperity has been
followed by a period of hardship, causing the people to live the best
they can with whatever they presently have. A striking example of
this is their ingenuity in maintaining cars from the 1950s. How
they keep these old cars running and looking so beautiful without
much money or new parts is a testament to their make it happen
mentality.
In the colonial period from the 1500s through much of the
1700s, Cuba was ruled by Spain, briefly by the British and French.
African slavery began in 1512 because the island natives where
not strong enough to work the sugar cane fields, and Africans
proved to be a strong people. There were many attempts to abolish
slavery. After The Ten Year War, slaves who fought on either side
were given freedom, but others remained slaves until October 7,
1886. The religious beliefs and music of the Africans blended with
Spanish Catholicism, and one can see this
today in the religion and music of Santeria.
Among the most interesting sites on
our tour were the strange rounded limestone mountains of Pinar del Rio, called
mogotesrising out of the earth straight
up with jagged limestone sides dotted with
caves and covered in trees. Surrounding
these mountains is fertile land where 70% of
Cubas world-famous tobacco is grown. In
one of the tobacco barns we saw how the leaves ferment, and took
photos laughing and chatting with the farmers and their families.
In this area we had lunch at an all-organic restaurant in the midst
of their massive vegetable gardens on the side of a hill overlooking
a lush valley with mountains in the distance. We were all surprised
and delighted to be served 31 different items spread across our community table! Many of us tasted every itemincluding yours truly.
Another wonderful site was Ernest Hemingways house and
grounds overlooking Havana. Palm trees, bamboo, orchids, and
arbors encircle this beautiful home, with the adjoining tower in
which he wrote (often standing up because of injuries) from 1939
to 1960. He wrote seven books while living in Cuba, including The
Old Man and the Sea. We walked down a tree-lined path to his
swimming pool and to his famous fishing boat, Pilar. And, as was
common, music and rum were shared by all on this sitetourists
from the U.S. were everywhere.
We also spent a day in the historical and lovely port of Matanzas,
the Athens of Cuba, known for its poets, culture, and Afro-Cuban
folklore. Here we toured the harbor-fort Castillo de San Severino

34

of the 1500s. We learned about the slave trade and Santeria. A

lively troupe of dancers enchanted us with variations of Santerias
Afro-Cuban music Rumba. From here we went to the oldest
pharmacy in the Americas, dating to 1882. I felt that Edgar Cayces
readings would have loved its inventoryit was amazing and in
perfect condition.
Free enterprise exists amid Cuban communism. Artists were
everywhere selling their works openly and profitably. Most every towns plaza had individuals selling their wares. We enjoyed
restaurants that were family-owned, called paladares. The standard fare was rice and beans (black beans) with fresh vegetables
and our choice of pork, lamb, chicken, or fish.
We toured the Museo de Bellas Artes art museum, UNESCOS
world heritage site of Habana Vieja (Old Havana), and Jardin
Botanico Nacional de Cuba (the botanical gardens), where we
relaxed in the Japanese garden pagoda as I gave a talk about our
soul journey, Atlantis, and the future, and we chatted about all
sorts of topics.
Our tour was made possible by A.R.E. Life Member Francis
Harrison and her company Conscious Cuba, along with
Havanatur, Cubas travel company founded in 1995. Im already
thinking of ways to enhance this tour and return soon to this
beautiful island in the Caribbean.

Damanhur, Almas Drawings, and Cayces Atlantis

presented by Wendy Oke

Wendy Oke introduces the drawings of Alma
Rumball, an artist whose hand began to draw
independently of her consciousness. Their haunting
images parallel Cayces Atlantis readings and many
symbols appear in the art of Damanhur, a spiritual
community in Italy.

The Akashic Records:

Creation of Lifes Experiences

TERM FREQUENTLY DISCUSSED by the Edgar Cayce

readings that had a tremendous impact upon his
work was the term the Akashic Records. Derived
from the Sanskrit word akasha, which means boundless space, the Akashic Records might best be compared
to a supercomputer memory system that keeps track of
everything. Edgar Cayce suggested that the story of our
livesour thoughts, our words, our deeds, and our relationshipsare stored in these Akashic Records, which
served as the ultimate source of information for his psychic
readings. However, these records are much more than simApril-June 2015

ply a compilation of the past; instead, they are interactive

and somehow draw together experiences and relationships
specifically needed by each individual for her or his personal
growth and development. Obviously, free will enables individuals to decide whether or not they are willing to learn
whatever lesson has been presented, but the lesson is theirs
nonetheless. Ultimately, the Akashic Records are each souls
safety net, insuring that everyone will eventually have
the opportunity to become all that he or she was meant to
be. They have also been called the Book of Life, Gods
Book of Remembrance, or even an aspect of Divine mind.
37

For ease of understanding, the Akashic

Records might be conceived as containing
three very different components:
1. Those records dealing with the past
(including past lives);
2. Those records influencing present
experiences and relationships; and
3. Those records analyzing the everevolving future.

1. The Past

In terms of the past, the information

stored within the Akashic Records is
essentially related to memory. One example of how accessing this memory can
be experienced has been discussed in the
phenomenon known as the Near-Death
Experience (NDE). Ever since Raymond
Moodys bestseller, Life After Life, countless examples of NDEs have appeared
online, in print, and in the media. One of
the commonalities among many of these
stories is that individuals encounter a life
reviewseeing glimpses of their entire
lifetime flash before them. Ultimately, what
is occurring in this process is that these
people are experiencing their own Akashic
Records of the past. These records also
include memory from previous lifetimes
as well as the overall accumulation of a
souls talents, experiences, inclinations,
and desires.
Edgar Cayces secretary, Gladys Davis,
told members of the office staff that she
had an intense phobia of sharp cutting
instruments such as knives and scissors.
She stated that throughout her life she
had often been gripped by nervous fear
whenever she saw a sharp instrument near
her or witnessed someone else using one.
She eventually came to understand this
fear as part of a past-life memory: according to Edgar Cayces readings for her life
in ancient Persia, she had been killed by
being run through with a sword. Once she
understood where the fear came from, it
began to diminish, and she no longer had
an issue with it.
A unique concept from the Cayce information is that past-life karma is
essentially memoryit is memory from
the past that the individual encounters
(and deals with) in her or his present-life
experiences and relationships. We all have
examples of this kind of memorywe have
certain occupations we are drawn to, or
specific kinds of food we like, or cultures
38

The Process of Obtaining the Records

On numerous occasions during the process of giving a reading, Edgar Cayce became aware of what
happened to his own consciousness as he tuned into these records, as described in his own words:
I see myself as a tiny dot out of my physical body, which lies inert before me. I find myself oppressed by darkness and there is a feeling of terrific loneliness. Suddenly, I am conscious of a white
beam of light. As this tiny dot, I move upward following the light, knowing that I must follow it or be
lost.
As I move along this path of light I gradually become conscious of various levels upon which
there is movement. Upon the first levels there are vague, horrible shapes, grotesque forms such as
one sees in nightmares. Passing on, there begin to appear on either side, misshapen forms of human
beings with some part of the body magnified. Again there is change and I become conscious of
gray-hooded forms moving downward. Gradually, these become lighter in color. Then the direction
changes and these forms move upward and the color of the robes grows rapidly lighter. Next,
there begin to appear on either side vague outlines of houses, walls, trees, etc., but everything is
motionless.
As I pass on, there is more light and movement in what appear to be normal cities and towns.
With the growth of movement I become conscious of sounds, at first indistinct rumblings, then
music, laughter, and singing of birds. There is more and more light, the colors become very beautiful,
and there is the sound of wonderful music. The houses are left behind, ahead there is only a
blending of sound and color. Quite suddenly I come upon a hall of records. It is a hall without walls,
without ceiling, but I am conscious of seeing an old man who hands me a large book, a record of
the individual for whom I seek information. (294-19, Reports)
Rather than being a literal place, the readings suggested that this experience was essentially a
symbolic representation of his accessing information at higher levels of consciousness. Once given
the record, Cayce had the ability to select the information that would be most capable of assisting the individual at that moment in life. Frequently, the readings pointed out that not everything
available was being provided but instead only that information which would be most helpful and
hopeful. If another reading was obtained later, inevitably the Cayce source would provide additional insights helpful to the individual.

and historical timeframes that appeal to

us. Those things that seem to be an innate
part of who we are can often be traced to
karmic memory. Other examples include
meeting someone for the first time and not
liking that person, or meeting someone and
having an instant positive attraction to that
individual. Edgar Cayce stated that we pick
up all of our relationships, our talents, our
animosities, and our shortcomings exactly
where we left them off.

2. The Present

In regards to the Akashic Records of

the present, the readings suggest that each
of us has an almost unlimited number of
patterns from the past (both positive and
negative) that can be re-energized by our
thoughts, activities, and relationships in
the present. Some of these patterns relate
to positive qualities and talents, while
others deal with negative behaviors and
shortcomings. Each of these is essentially
the byproduct of what the soul has done

with its prior experiences.

For example, an innate musical talent is
simply the individual picking up an ability
that was acquired previously. Conversely,
an innate negative behavior, such as selfishness, aggression, bigotry, etc., can be a
shadow of negative choices and experiences from the past. Whats important for us
to become aware of in the present is that it
is just as easy to energize a negative pattern
by our thoughts and activities as it is a positive one. That is why the Cayce information
frequently recommended working with
spiritual ideals.
From Cayces perspective, each of us
clearly sees our own strengths and weaknesses in other people. And we often deal
with our karmic memory (both positive
and negative) in our relationships with
others. Ultimately, the Akashic Records
draw to us people that mirror our own
strengths and weaknesses, following the
universal law: Like attracts like. Each
of us sees in other people something very
EdgarCayce.org

specific to our own needs.

The Edgar Cayce readings clearly state
that each relationship and every experience
that we find ourselves involved with in the
present has the potential to be helpful and
hopeful in terms of the souls quest for
personal wholeness. Cayce saw the earth as
a cause and effect classroom where each
individual constantly has the opportunity
to meet self and apply spiritual principles
in the material world. Differing from some
New Age schools of thought, rather than
getting out of the earth, the readings
premise is that our ultimate goal is to
bring spirit into the earth, manifesting the
individuality of the soul in the process. Our
success with those lessons and relationships
determines the next series of experiences
the soul draws to itself. Actually, each
choice in the present leads to another series
of potential futures.
For example, if a soul really messes up
in the presenttotally ignoring the lessons
that are being presented and becoming
abusive (or even a criminal) in relationship
to othersthe next time around that soul
will have much more limited parameters
of free will. Ultimately, the universe will
only let a soul get into so much trouble.
Conversely, a soul that really achieves
lessons on its learning agenda will be
given much greater flexibility and much
greater parameters of free will in which to
bring spirit into the earth. Our personal
free will is inextricably connected to how
well we interact with the lessons that the
Akashic Records draw to us.

3. The Future

anyone without it first being foreshadowed

in a dream.
Because of the nature of the Akashic
Records and the fact that they are responsible for drawing to every soul exactly
what that soul needs, the Akashic Records
are constantly calculating probabilitiesif
the individual does this, this is the probable
outcome; if someone makes this choice,
this is where it is potentially headed. As
we sleep, we often tune into the superconscious mind and our own potential futures.
This is exactly what Cayce meant by seeing
a shadow of the future in the dream state.
For example, many individuals have had
the experience of having a conversation
with someone, or going somewhere, and
all at once having the realization, Wait
a minuteIve already had this conversation Or, Ive already been here
These experiences of dj vu happen because most often an individual dreamed
about the activity previously and while it
is occurring there is a partial memory of
having encountered it before. This kind of
dj vu is essentially associated with tuning
into higher levels of consciousness.
Aaron Frazier was a 30-year-old businessman when he had a dream that seemed
to indicate a change in his companys table
of organization. His boss had left the company, making him one of the applicants in
line for the job opening which would have
meant a promotion. While waiting for the
decision to be made, he had a dream:
I saw the table of organization on the
company presidents desk. As if somehow
watching over his shoulder, I saw the
president use a pencil eraser to erase the

entire division that had once reported to

my boss and separate it into two different
departments. Using his pencil, he then connected one of the departments to an already
existing division within the company and
then he connected the other department to
another division.
Within a week, the company announced
that the departing division director would
not be replaced. Instead, as a cost-savings
measure, the company had decided to
break apart the division and separate its
function between existing divisions within
the corporation. As a result, the dreamer
retained his job but ended up reporting to
another division director, just as had been
foreshadowed in his dream.

Much More Than Storage

The Akashic Records are much more

than a memory storehouse of data; these
records are interactive, in that they have a
tremendous influence upon us in the present as well as upon our unfolding futures.
We constantly interact with them, and they
download those very circumstances and
experiences we need to become better people. The records are our personal tool for
keeping track of the lessons weve learned
and still need to master on the souls wholeness curriculum. In fact, Edgar Cayce stated
that each of us is where we are for a reason:
it has been pulled together by the Akashic
Records themselves.
A good example of the activity of the
records comes from the story of Kelly, who
had a dream of them as a tablet. Kelly
was participating in a dream incubation
project at A.R.E. Camp in the mountains of

The Akashic Records of the future

embody an ever-changing array of possibilities and potentials. The future is not
fixed; instead, the future changes and
alters with every thought, every choice
and every decision we make in the present.
Essentially the future is an ever-evolving
shadow of that which may be, totally dependent upon what one does in the present
with what he or she has learned from the
past. However, because we are constantly
receiving information from the Akashic
Records, essentially tapping into the
material connected to us personally, our
changing futures can be glimpsed in intuitive impressions, hunches, and even our
dreams. In fact, the Cayce readings state
that nothing of significance ever happens to

western Virginia by spending a day in isolation, and then a night in a special dream
tent erected for this purpose on the banks
of White Rock Creek. She had been praying
for information concerning the direction
of her career. The next morning, she gave
this report:
I awoke in the middle of the night, startled to find that a strong wind was blowing,
and that the dream tent had blown away! A
small, old woman appeared, calling out my
name, and commanded me to pay attention
to what was about to happen. She said she
was preparing my body for death and that
the winds were spirits which would pass
through me to check the seven glands. I was
at first afraid, then took comfort in the old
womans aura of confidence and authority.
Finally I surrendered to the experience. At
that time, I saw before me a large luminous
tablet, containing many columns of fine
print which detailed my past experiences
and my future lives.
This vision ended abruptly, and I found
myself lying within the tent as if I had
awakened from a dream. This experience
was very different, however, from any other
dreams. Over time, I had other dreams that
commented on this vision, and gave me the
confidence to choose a new, more creative
path for my career.
From what source do such dreams draw
their information, not to mention the
creative intelligence to gather the just so
information to apply toward an ingenious
purpose? In todays language of quantum
physics, Ervin Laszlo has compiled and

shared the scientific version of Cayces

Akashic vision in his well-regarded book,
Science and the Akashic Field: An Integral
Theory of Everything. He explains that
just as there are invisible but highly active
electro-magnetic fields, and gravitational
fields, there exists also an informational
field. One of the primary observations in
modern science that require the acceptance of this ancient Hindu notion is that
of non-locality. This term refers to what
Einstein called action at a distance, or the
instant transmission of information over
large distances, as when a pair of widely
separated electrons maintain an instant
rapport connecting the polarity of their
spin. More than this psychic connectivity, Laszlo goes on to explain how this
informational field acts with intelligence
and purpose, providing a guidance system
for the evolution of creation, especially that
of consciousness itself. The direction of the
evolution of consciousness, according to the
evidence, is away from an egocentric point
of view to a more transpersonal orientation.
Whether considered from the point of
view of Cayces psychic vision or from
the perspective of integral science, if the
Akashic Records are the mind of God, then
that God is one that actively cares that we
wake up to the underlying reality of our
existence.

we have with ourselves and one another?

The answer is really so that we can become worthy companions of an all-loving
Creator.
The soul is destined to grow (and eventually awaken) to an awareness of its true
relationship to the Creator. Whatever it
takes to bring about this growth in consciousness is exactly what the Akashic
Records will continually draw toward
the soul. Cayce asked one individual, how
much longer can the will of man continue to defy its Maker? It is just a matter
of time before we all join up in a sense
of shared companionship, a destiny that
is already written in the book of remembrances.

The Universe Has a Sense of Humor

In my experience
nothing is more helpful
when we are teaching
than to be able to start
with a joke.

n reading 2995-1 Edgar Cayce says,

Do not see the dark side too often.
Turn it overtheres another side to
every question. Cultivate in self humor, wit. Ye enjoy it in others enjoy it
in thee.
This past week I had the opportunity to
experience the reality of Edgar Cayces quote.
I have been working with a group of people
who are members of the staff at the Mayo
Clinic in Phoenix. Twice before I had had
the opportunity to speak from the podium in
their main lecture hall where the PA system
was the best that I have seen any place. No
matter where I moved around the podium
it picked up my voice. This time it was a
workshop and we were in a classroom so the
PA system was completely different. The first
speaker had trouble with the microphone that
was connected to the podium and I also had
trouble with it. The microphone did not pick
up our voices and we twisted and turned it
but couldnt get it to work. Finally one of the
participants who knew the system came up
and let us know that we were talking into a
podium light; it was not a microphone. This
struck us all as so funny that all of us were
doubled up with laughter.
In my experience nothing is more helpful
when we are teaching than to be able to start
with a joke or in this case an actual humorous
situation which the universe provided.
The heart of the message I was presenting
had to do with what I consider the foundation
for Living Medicine.
THESE ARE THE 5 Lslife, love, laughter,
labor, and listening.
LIFE: if we are not alive nothing else matters.

GLADYS TAYLOR McGAREY, MD,

MD(H), a pioneer in holistic medicine
and study group member since 1957,
uses Cayce concepts in her consulting
practice in Scottsdale, Arizona.
April-June 2015

LOVE: without love there is no true healing.

We may cure a disease and not have the patient
heal or we may have a healing without curing
the disease.
LAUGHTER: laughter sits right in the middle
of the 5 Ls. It brings the energy of joy and
hope into our lives. It makes our lives more
juicy and helps us with the next step which is

LABOR: without labor the first three cannot

manifest on this dimension. And labor by itself
is just too hard and dry.
LISTENING: its important to listen to ourselves, our own body, the world around us, and
to each other. It allows the healing process to
move outside of ourselves to the world around
us and bring the world from the outside into
our own healing.
In reading 3440-2, Edgar Cayce gives us
a deeper understanding of humor. He says,
Then see the joy, even in sorrow. See the pleasure that may even come with pain.
I learned this lesson from my mother who
at the age of 89 had severe osteoporosis and
polycythemia vera. She fell and fractured her
ribs and left knee. After calling an ambulance
my father and I got her to the hospital and as
we were moving her from the gurney onto the
x-ray table she looked up and saw the pain in
our faces and she said, The old gray mare,
she aint what she used to be. The next day
she died. She was able to help us with our
sorrow and even in her pain she took pleasure
in helping us deal with her pain.
Life is serious; life is tough; we all have pain
and we all have sorrow and there are times
when we have sickness, but we all have within
us a sense of humor which enlivens our other
senses. Like with our five senses, it is up to us
to develop and improve them. It is only as we
work with and activate our sense of humor
that it improves and grows. If we are always
looking at the dark side and dont turn it over
to the lighter side we miss out on the juicy part
of life which is so funny.
Its interesting that in the workshop no
matter how long we fiddled with the light if
we didnt do something about the sound we
were not communicating with each other.
We treasure each one of our five senses and
each one has a specific place in our life in this
dimension. Jesus said, He who has eyes to
see let him see, and he who has ears to hear let
him hear. We are so blessed. Our five senses
make it possible for us to experience life on this
dimension and our sense of humor makes life
more wonderful.

Integrated Imagery
at atlantic University
By Bert Carlson
In our journey towards higher consciousness, we find there are many tools available to us that
greatly help in turning the stumbling blocks to stepping stones (Cayce reading 1424-2)
that we find along our path. An important tool offered at Atlantic University is Integrated
Imagery, an expanded form of Past-Life Regression (PLR), which not only processes PLR but
also investigates and explores our transpersonal nature and the nature of our personal reality.

Bert Carlson, MA, presently assists

Dr. Deborah Smith in the residential fourth weeks of Integrated
Imagery training. For the past several years, he assisted Dr. John Z.
Amoroso in the residential training. Bert is a graduate of Atlantic University and certified in the
three levels of Integrated Imagery as
well as many other Past Life Regression and Hypnotherapy modalities.
He has been in practice for the last
18 years.
In his life before retiring, he
worked as a Field Engineer for an
aerospace company. He developed
training courses and manuals for
the US Navy and foreign military
customers for formal training of
engineers and technicians at his
companys training facility. After
formal training he would go to the
customers military base, usually
for two-three years, to work and
continue the training until he was
no longer needed. Between his foreign assignments he would return
to Norfolk, Virginia to train and
work with the US Navy.

42

Using the Integrated Imagery methodology, procedures, and techniques in awakening past
lives, we can uncover the unfinished business of the past that has an effect on present life
behavior. Through guided processing, access to our higher wisdom opens the door to insights
and an understanding of soul issues that allow for healing and the guiding towards our greater
spiritual growth.
In a recent class of seven students, Lisa volunteered for a class demonstration offering to
process her issue of a fear of swimming in certain bodies of water. Though comfortable in a
swimming pool, she did not like to set foot in the ocean or any large body of natural water.
In her regression, she experienced a past life where she drowned. The trauma of this past-life
experience caused a negative charge of continuative karmic energy that was brought into her
present life experience. Any trauma that is unfinished in one lifetime will appear in another
lifetime as a challenge, requiring processing in one way or another to heal that negative theme.
In Lisas case, as a young mother, she could not enjoy the water with her family and learned to
live with her fear, even though this was also a challenge. Lisa saw an opportunity to face and
heal her fear by taking the recent Integrated Imagery class offered at Atlantic University in
the fall 2013 term. She hoped the course might hold promise to explore her fear through the
process of PLR. The re-experiencing of the emotion, and addressing the unfinished business of
her past life using the methods of PLR, had a profound clearing effect on her. Also, it brought
insights through Lisas higher wisdom allowing her to understand how pride affects love.

EdgarCayce.org

After the first days residential class, she walked in the surf on
the beach enjoying her experience, which she could not do previously. The next day Lisa borrowed a swimsuit and went into
the ocean, swimming out some distance while another student
videoed her exciting progress. The following day Lisa showed the
video to the class, proud of her accomplishment, stating that she
had to have the video as proof to show her husband so he would
believe her! As her concluding comments on Integrated Imagery
Level One, Lisa stated:
As this course comes to a close it is unreal to me that it has been
only 14 short weeks; but lifetimes of transformation. Integrated
Imagery is an incredibly powerful tool that allows the conscious
mind direct access to subconscious patterns. (December 11,
2013)
Betty (Not her real name), another student in the same class,
was regressed to an experience during WW II where she found
that she was a young Jewish girl, walking along with a group of
mostly women and children, towards a concentration camp. She
was hungry, afraid, felt alone and unloved, not knowing anyone
there or the whereabouts of her parents. The guards looked fearful, menacing, and devoid of spirit. She experienced the emotion
and trauma of having died at the camp at the young age of 10.
Through the PLR methods, Betty was guided in processing her
trauma where she became emotional, compassionate, forgiving,
and loving by moving past her death to her higher wisdom in the
afterlife state. From this higher level, the issue of forgiving the
guards was very important, knowing that love was the foundation
from which her forgiveness could spring forth. Bettys willingness
to forgive was the key to letting go and releasing the trauma of
her PLR experience.
When sending loving healing from her heart to the guards she
saw them transform to their spiritual core light-self, realizing
from her higher wisdom that we are all spiritual light beings having a lower density life experience; also, we incarnate for a purpose in an earthly experience with challenges, which we choose
in the before-life planning state. In this past-life experience, Betty
believed she had planned and chosen her life experiences, which
ended at an emotionally traumatic young age, just as the guards
also had chosen their challenges and life experiences.
This experience, and the insights gained, brings to light Jesus
words Love your enemies, (Matt. 5:44 and Luke 6:27). By present-day standards, this proves challenging as many of us would
rather kill our enemies than love them. Perhaps this experience
and its powerful insights can help us to consider that we may
all be interacting through planned and agreed-upon life circumstances, impacting us in positive and negative ways for our greater
spiritual growth. When we can rise above the valley of our lower
nature and climb to a higher level up the mountain of consciousness, we see a more expanded view of the big picture resulting in
greater insights and understanding of our transpersonal nature.
Betty states her concluding comments about her experience in
Integrated Imagery Level One:
I am thoroughly amazed at how far I have come during this
classI have gained clarity around my own past, have released
huge old wounds and have come to more fully own my own gifts,
April-June 2015

talents, and abilities. What more could one ask for in a 14-week
period? (December 9, 2013)
Integrated Imagery is divided into three levels of training with
each level offered in a 14-week term; there are seven components
of the complete Integrated Imagery continuum, known as the
Energetic Chain of Experience. Throughout all three levels, the
student will also explore and process issues concerning the nature
of their personal reality and the interaction of hypnosis between
the functional components of mind and the movement toward
unity consciousness.
In Level One the focus is on the methods of PLR and the processing in the afterlife state. Level One is the core of Integrated
Imagery instruction and is based on the Guide/Traveler method
of processing. Level Two offers the next three components: Before Life Planning, Perinatal/Prenatal (in utero), and Present Life
(age regression) states. In Level Three, the last two components
look at higher states of being, the Life between Lives and Future
Life states, which are investigated and explored focusing on our
transpersonal nature. This level is based on the work of Michael
Newton, PhD, as reported in his books Journey of Souls, Destiny
of Souls, and Life between Lives. In both Levels Two and Three,
other advanced techniques are discussed and practiced.
In the fourth week of each course level, students are required
to attend a four-day residential in Virginia Beachof lectures
and presentations, at least six supervised paired regressions, and
mentor regression demonstrations to develop the skills necessary
for successful PLR sessions. In this residential, and through interactive discussions online and individual practice exercises, the
student explores their own issues and challenges and learns how
to clear them for their greater growth. By both traveling as well
as guiding, the PLR residential experience offers insights about
personal realities as regressionist skills are developed.
A number of other select topics for discussion can supplement
the residential schedules, depending on student interest and time
constraints. Throughout the 14 weeks of the course, there are
reading and essay assignments for study that broaden the students knowledge base of Integrated Imagery. Also, after the residency the student will continue their personal practice using a
CD for traveling, as well as for guiding volunteers to broaden and
sharpen their skills. Upon successful completion of all three Integrated Imagery levels, Atlantic University will award the student
Certification in Integrated Imagery.
Integrated Imagery was developed by John Z. Amoroso, Ph.D.,
a psychologist with a practice outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He taught Integrated Imagery at Atlantic University for
many years and has recently turned over mentorship to Deborah
Smith, PhD, a psychologist and practicing hypnotherapist here at
the A.R.E. and in Richmond, Virginia.
Dr. Smith mentored the fall 2013 semester, bringing her unique
skill set and experience to the training. She will be mentoring Integrated Imagery Level One again in the 2015 fall term and finish
in 2016 Level Two and Three. The sequence of levels can be taken
as elective credit for students or as continuing education for those
who are not in the Atlantic University MA program of studies.

Fashioning Your Own Vision Quest

Make your inquiry

very intentional, and
be attentive to any
synchronicity
a meaningful
coincidence that
points to a life
direction.

MARK THURSTON, PhD, is an

author, psychologist, and educator
who worked at A.R.E. and Atlantic
University from 1973 through 2008.

he journey of personal
transformation needs points along the way
for catching an inspirational new vision of
where were headed. Periods of slow, steady
application of what we know we need to
be doing can be punctuated by special occasions
of profound, life-altering insights. In many
ancient cultures there were time-tested practices
to stimulate such a transformational revelation
about life-directiona vision quest. But in our
modern society those purposeful rituals have
largely been lost. We need to re-invent practices
of vision-questing. Otherwise our journeys of
personal transformation are almost sure to get
bogged down.
So, how do you go about fashioning a vision
quest? Over the last six years I have been
working with this practice each semester, with a
new group of about 28 undergraduate university
students, in a course entitled Consciousness,
Meaning, and Life-Purpose. Over 15 weeks
we explore the academic side of consciousness
studies, how to find meaning in life, and the
science of well-being and happiness. But most
important to the course is experiential learning
around life-purpose, culminating in a two-week
personally-designed vision quest experiment.
You could do this, too; and, you dont have
to be in a university course like mine. Lets
consider what my students have put into their
experiments. Here are six elements to consider
putting into a vision quest of your own.
Formulate a question. Make your inquiry very
intentional. What are you hoping to discover
through your vision quest? Examples include
What am I truly called to be doing in my life?
or What is missing in my life that might help
me find greater happiness? or Who and what
can I really depend on in my life?
Commit adequate time. When will you do
your vision quest and for how long? Although
some people may have the opportunity to set
aside everything and focus exclusively on this
inner discovery process for a long weekend
or a week, most of us have too many duties
and responsibility to be solely focused on the
vision quest. Thats certainly the situation for
my college students, and it may very well be for
you, too. But setting aside an hour a day for 10
days can work just fineperhaps with one day
in that span when you devote half the day or all

day on special activities in your vision quest plan.

Create attentiveness to synchronicity. Most
all of us have experienced the way in which
meaningful coincidences can be a source of
life-direction. We can use a divination tool such
as the I Ching or we can just be attentive to life
events. We cannot cause synchronicity because,
by its very definition, its not the product of
cause-and-effect. But we can create conditions
in which we invite ourselves to be open and
alert to meaningful signs. In a vision quest that
might mean a daily practice of opening a book
of spiritual wisdom to some random page and
exploring how the teachings on that page prove
to be relevant. Or, it can mean walks in nature
during which you are alert to signs or events that
remind you of principles and truths that need to
be prominent in your life now.
Incubate a dream. Dreams happen every
night to all of us, but usually we dont prepare
ourselves before going to bed. Dedicating one
or more nights during your vision quest to
dream guidance can be a powerful element of
your personal exploration. Fall asleep with the
central question for your vision quest clearly in
your mind. And make sure you have ready on
your nightstand what youll need to record your
dream just after awakening.
Meditative exercises. Some kind of contemplative practice is vital to a vision quest. If you
already have a meditation practice, then heres a
time to deepen your commitment. Or if you are
new to meditation, get started with even five or
ten minutes daily during your vision quest.
Creative expression. Intuitive insight can often
be awakened in the midst of creative endeavors.
(Consider how the Cayce readings often refer
to the divine as the Creative Forces.) As part
of your vision quest plan, you might include
sketching a picture of your dream, using a
musical instrument daily to create some music
(not just listen to it), or drawing a mandala
several times during the span of your vision quest.
By completing a personal vision quest, just like
my university students do, I think you are sure
to get greater clarity about your life. Just making
dedicated space in your busy life for something
like this can be transformational. And theres also
a chance that you will gain a self-insight that will
propel you into the next phase of your journey
of personal transformation.

Mood linked with the birth season

ccording to researchers,
your personality and
temperament may be influenced by the season of your
birth. Scientists from Budapest, Hungary, presented their
research at the annual conference of the European College
of Neuropsychopharmacology
(ECNP) in Berlin, Germany.
They found that people
born at certain times
of the year have a
far greater chance
of developing
mood disorders.
The study
used 400 people and
matched their personality
type to when in the year they
were born. More individuals
born in summer demonstrated a cyclothymic temperament and experienced frequent and quick mood swings
while those born in the winter
are less likely to become irritable adults. A hyperthymic
temperament characterized
by a tendency to be excessively positive, was significantly
higher among those born in
the spring and summer. Those
born in autumn were less likely to be depressive.
Lead researcher, assistant
professor Xenia Gonda, said:
Biochemical studies have
shown that the season in
which you are born has an
influence on certain mono-

April-June 2015

amine neurotransmitters, such

as dopamine and serotonin,
which is detectable even in
adult life. This led us to believe
that birth season may have
a longer-lasting effect. Our
work looked at over 400 subjects and matched their birth
season to personality types in
later life.
Basically, it seems
that when you are
born may increase
or decrease your
chance of developing certain mood
disorders. We cant
yet say anything about
the mechanisms involved.
What we are now looking at
is to see if there are genetic
markers which are related
to season of birth and mood
disorder.
Perhaps, as Edgar Cayce
suggested, there are correlations between birth date and
certain personality tendencies
or urges.
Then the relations to
the greater influencesfrom
which urges arisethese are
the astrological aspects; not
merely because the stars or
planets were in some particular position at the time of
birth... (2428-1) We should
also remember that No influence is of greater value or of
greater help than the will of
an individual. (815-6)

Solar activity at birth predicts life-span

new study reported by The

Telegraph (1/7/15) suggests
that solar activity at the time
of birth can impact life-span.
According to the study, published
in Proceedings of the Royal
Society, Norwegian researchers
found that those born during peak
solar activity died an average of
five years earlier than those born
when the activity was low.
Solar cycles have been recorded since 1749 and the cycle
currently lasts 11 years. Recent
peaks of solar activity during the
study timeframe included March,
2000; July, 1989; December, 1979;
November, 1968; and March,
1958. During these peaks, areas
of intense magnetic activity called
sunspots are visible and ultraviolet
radiation increases dramatically,
affecting the earths atmosphere.
Among 10,000 babies born
in Norway, researchers found
that babies born during the solar

maximum had lifespans that were

5.2 years shorter than those born
during a solar minimum. The current theory is that the increased
ultraviolet radiation causes DNA
and cell damage in developing
infants. According to lead author
Gine Skjrv, of the Norwegian
University of Science and Technology, Individuals born in years
with high solar activity had a lower
probability of surviving to adulthood [than] those born in years
with low solar activity. She also
believes that increased UV light
hinders production of Vitamin B,
essential for development.
The Sun is actually experiencing
one of its quietest periods in recent
history. According to Edgar Cayce,
sunspots and solar flares are a response to conditions on the earth:
Then, what are the sun spots? A
natural consequence of that turmoil which the sons of God in the
earth reflect upon same. (5757-1)

Legendary Atlantis metal discovered

in shipwreck off Sicily

ccording to Discovery News (1/6/15),

divers exploring a 2,600-year-old shipwreck off the coast of Sicily discovered 39
ingots of gleaming metal that might be the
legendary orichalcum. Experts believe the
ship was coming from Greece or Asia Minor
and went down just outside the harbor, like- Orichalcum or not? The metal ingots were
recovered off Sicily. Source: Superintenly during a storm. It is now only 1,000 feet
dent of the Sea Office, Sicily
from shore at a depth of about 3.5 meters.
The wreck dates to the first half of the sixth century [BC], said Sebastiano Tusa, Sicilys superintendent of the Sea Office, to Discovery. We
knew orichalcum from ancient texts and a few ornamental objects.
The earliest mention of orichalcum was by Hesiod about 700 BC. The
best known reference is Platos Critias (460-403 BC) which suggested that
the spires of Atlantis shone with the red light of orichalcum a metal
mined there. It is also believed to have covered the interior walls, columns, and floor of the Atlantean Temple of Poseidon.
Possibly invented by Cadmusan alchemist from Greek and Phoenician myththe metal was prized in the ancient world, being second only
to gold in value. By the time of Critias, it was known only by name; and its
composition is widely debated today.
Unlike anything in the modern world, the rediscovered metal was
made up of 75-80 percent copper and 15-20 percent of zinc with traces of
other metals including nickel, lead, and iron.

A. Cats tend to be very finicky about their foods. In fact,

cats become imprinted on the food they are first
fed. They can even become addicted to the shape
of the kibble. Thats why each pet food company
makes their kitty kibble in distinct shapes.
The companies also spray the surface of the
kibble with animal digest which is similar to
MSG and has a taste cats cant resist. I liken this
to Doritos. I personally do not care much for
plain old corn chips. However, when those same
chips are sprayed with that Doritos coating, I
cant resist. Similarly, the cats natural proclivity
to eat a healthy diet is hijacked by the technology
of flavor enhancers.
I have personal experience with switching finicky felines to raw. Several years ago I inherited
my parents cats and these kitties were dry food
junkies. When I put raw food in front of them
they looked up at me and said, We cant eat
this. Are you trying to kill us? Well, my other
cats were all eating raw food so I told the newcomers, Youre going to have to eat this food
like everyone else. Day and night I put a bowl
of raw food in front of them, and each time they
turned their noses up.
By day three of their hunger strike I think I
heard them say, Wed rather die than eat that
raw food. By the way, although a healthy cat
can miss a meal or two, a cat that does not eat for
three days can go into liver failure and die, so I
do not recommend the starvation method of food
transition. Because of this learning experience,
taught by a couple of pros, I have come up with
the following finicky cat transition technique.
The first step is to get him on a twice-a-day
feeding schedule. No matter what your cat may
tell you, he does not need a bowl full of food sitting out all day. If he were in the wild, he would
not have dead mice lying around to eat. In fact,
he would have to get his butt off the couch and
catch a mouse. And, if he missed that mouse, he
would go without a meal.
So first thing in the morning, you put of your
cats daily ration in the bowl and put it down

for him to eat. If

your cat is like most,
he is likely to eat a
few pieces and walk
away, confident it will
be there later. But, it
will not be there later.
Let the bowl of food
stay down for 15-20
minutes and then put it up and away.
Then, in the evening when you put a bowl with
the other of the daily ration down, your cat is
very likely to finish it off. He will quickly (within
a few days) get into the new rhythm of eating. (If
you have more than one cat, feed them separately
and in different rooms if necessary.)
It may be best to start the feeding schedule
during the week when people are not in the
house to hear the cat complain about the lack
of readily available vittles. And, if you are home
for the transition and your cat does complain, do
not give in. Giving him food when he gets loud
and obnoxious will only reinforce the unwanted
behavior. You must resist the temptation to give
in to your cats demands.
Now that your cat is used to eating morning
and night, its time to start adding the raw food.
With each feeding, put a teaspoon of raw food on
the bottom of the food bowl and put the dry food
of top. That way, your kitty wont have to touch
the raw food but hell smell it with every bite of
dry food he takes. Considering the sensitivity of
the feline nose, this is a big step.
Once your cat adjusts to the new aroma, mix
the raw food in with a small amount of the dry
on the bottom of the bowl. That way, if he wants
to get a whole belly full of food, hell have to eat
some that is touching the raw food. Now, very
gradually mix in more and more of the raw and
less and less of the dry. After a month or so of this
process, you should have a totally raw-fed cat.
For many cats, the owner has to really want to
see their companion eating a healthy, raw diet.
It takes persistence and a slightly deaf ear, but it
can be done. If I can make raw eaters out of
my parents cats, I know you can do the same
for your kitty.

We Are Never Alone:

Reassuring Insights from the Other Side

By Anthony Quinata
4th Dimension Press 144 pages, paperback Item #128 $12.95

What you are about to read comes from the Eternal

Light of Love through the souls. I cannot take any
credit for some of the incredible things the souls
want you to know about the life that waits for you
when your journey here on earth is done. The material in this book is strictly from the souls and from
what I learned when I finally started paying attention to what they were saying during the sessions
they sent my way. If I wrote something contrary to
what they wanted me to say, Id find myself deleting
sentences, paragraphs, and even chapters, and
rewriting them until I was conveying the messages
they need us to know while here on earth.
The souls insisted that this book contain real
questions from real people. Let me reiterate that
the replies to these questions arent my responses.
Whenever I was asked a question, I would typically
go for a walk and listen to what the souls had to
say. And talk they did.
My hope, and the hope of the souls, is that those
who read this book will also know that there is
nothing to fearnothing at all! We are never alone
on this journey back home.
Anthony Quinata

Chapter FiveA Party in Her Honor

A woman named Ann was dying from breast
cancer. I was asked if I would offer a session as
part of the silent auction that was being held at a
benefit to help pay for her medical bills. Ill go one
further, I said, Ill do a session for her. That way
shell know what to expect when her time comes.
April-June 2015

Hopefully, itll help her.

The people who approached me told me that
they loved the idea but werent sure that Ann would
agree because she didnt believe in that sort of
thing. Honestly, I wasnt surprised when she did
agree to the session. It seemed perfectly reasonable
to me that when Ann, or anyone else for that matter,
comes to the point that she understands that physical death is inevitable, curiosity sets in as to what
may be waiting when that moment finally arrives.
When I do a session for people who are terminally ill, its not unusual for them to hear from a
number of souls of their loved ones who seem to
be gathering during the session en masse, hoping
to help them make their transition easier. In Anns
case however, it was only her aunt who showed up.
Shes telling me that theres a party being held
in your honor in about three weeks, I told her.
Ann looked puzzled. I dont know of any party.
The only one I know of is that one tonight.
Her aunt repeated herself that there was going
to be a huge party in Anns honor three weeks
from the day we were meeting. Ann looked at me
and shrugged.
Twenty-two days later she was surrounded by
her mother, her father, and her sister Mary when she
drew her last breath. At her memorial, her father,
unaware of the session between Ann and me, said
that during the last three weeks of her life,Ann was
more peaceful than he had ever seen her.
Terminal illness is a harsh way for life to end,
not just for those who are dying but for those left
behind. ... It tends to cause us to lose hope in the
here and now and in the reality of the hereafter.
We also lose a great deal of our loved ones before
theyre even gone.
But once they do succeed in moving from this
life to the next, these souls insist that its what they
went through that was necessary and that they
would gladly go through it all again to gain the
same reward in the next life. Most of the souls Ive
heard from who have passed from cancer, or another terminal disease, often refuse to acknowledge
any suffering they experienced because theyve
gained so much from it in terms of peace and joy
in the hereafter. If they do acknowledge going
through a rough time before their passing, it comes

across as a distant memory, and they insist that not

only did it end at the moment of their death, but it
was also a valuable part of the new life they built
for themselves in the hereafter. ...
People are sometimes surprised to hear that
their pets are waiting for them in the hereafter, but
according to the souls, not only are they waiting
for you when your journey here is finished, they are
rewarded for their life here on earth as well! Many
animals live their lives boldly and patiently even
after being mistreated, injured, and even tortured
by those they trust to take care of them.
Animals see without judgment, love unconditionally, and give without any expectation of
anything in return. They are a perfect mirror image
of the Eternal Light of Love, which is why the souls
say that cruelty to animals is considered by them
to be a serious offense; worse than even brutality
to another human being, because animals are at
the mercy of those they love. Suffering at the hands
of those here who do not understand or care that
they were sent here to teach us love, patience, and
understanding, they are victims who are unable to
speak out for themselves.
But make no mistake about it in the eyes of
the Eternal Light of Love animal souls are just as
important as human souls. Treating them well,
with kindness and compassion, is seen by those
on the Other Side as an indication that our soul
has grown to the point that is aware of, recognizes,
and treasures pets for what they are to those of us
here on earth ambassadors of the Eternal Light
of Love.

True Tales from the Cayce Archives

Lives Touched and Lessons Learned from the Sleeping Prophet

By Nancy and Sidney Kirkpatrick
A.R.E. Press 272 pages, paperback Item #672 $17.95

From the Introduction

Composer George Gershwin and Hollywood
film pioneer Jessie Lasky had readings, as had inventors Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla, electrical
engineers at RCA and NBC, and the president and
founder of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
Readings were conducted for the mother of
Ernest Hemingway, for the husband of aviator
Amelia Earhart, and though shrouded in secrecy,
for President Woodrow Wilson. This aspect of
Cayces work had not heretofore been called
attention to because Cayce had never promoted
himself. He didnt trade on the names of the rich
and famous who consulted with him for the same
reason he didnt charge a fee for giving readings.
He believed that his gift was from God and not
to be used for selfish or self-serving purposes

Excerpt from Chapter:

Dwight Moody: A Pastor in This
Life and the Next
The Union Tabernacle was the place to be on
weekend nights in Hopkinsville, the County seat.
With stadium seating for 2,000, the block-long
civic auditorium played host to vice-presidential
candidate Theodore Roosevelt, African-American
educator Booker T. Washington, temperance leader Carrie Nation, orator William Jennings Bryan,
and bandleader John Philip Sousa.
Eighteen-year-old Edgar Cayce, a frequent
52

visitor, came to hear the evangelists. There was

the soul saving and eternal optimist former baseball star Billy Sunday; the advocate of
Christian education George Stuart; the feisty and
always humorous Sam Jones; and Mordecai Ham,
the preacher who later converted Billy Graham at
a revival meeting in North Carolina. Edgar eagerly
awaited the arrival of the immensely popular and
charismatic Dwight L. Moody, known simply as
D.L., who sometimes drew [as many as] 12,000
people to hear his sermons.
On the morning before Moody was scheduled
to speak, April 5, 1898, Edgar was living with his
family in a white clapboard home on the corner
of 7th and Young Streets, a short walk from the
tabernacle. He had grown to be quite tall, standing
just over six-foot two, with tousled brown hair he
cut short, which accentuated his high forehead,
deep-set blue-gray eyes, and receding chin. As
his father was still unemployed since leaving
Beverly two years earlier, Edgars salary as a clerk
in Hopper Brothers Bookstore was now his familys
sole means of support. Still, Edgar had chores to
perform. Among his responsibilities was to milk
the family cow, which that Tuesday morning had
gone missing.
Edgar followed the cows tracks through an
open gate at the back of the house, across a meadow, down a riverbank, and along a creek that ran
through the middle of town. After he followed the
creek some hundred-or-so yards, he came upon a
middle-aged, overweight man seated on a log. He
had a great beard, which had begun to turn white,
like his hair. Edgar couldnt help but notice that he
held a Bible in his hands.
Good morning, young man, the stranger
said. Ill venture you are seeking this cow here
just behind me. She must have come up this way
from the path you came over.
Edgar asked him how he knew he was looking
for the cow. Dressed in a suit jacket and vest, he
didnt think he still looked like a farm boy. It was
the anxiety in his face that gave him away, Dwight
Moody replied, then introduced himself.
They got to talking and their conversation
inevitably turned to the Bible, the bookstore, and
Edgars desire to become a preacher. Moody then

invited him, as his guest, to attend his revival at

the tabernacle, which was scheduled to run an
entire week.
Edgar showed up that night and was very
impressed. He sat in the front row amidst a
standing-room-only crowd. The text Moody read
was from the Gospel of Luke, 10:25, the parable
of the Good Samaritan. Edgar had read it many
times and heard various interpretations, but he
had never heard it treated in quite the same way
as Moody presented the subject. Edgar communicated his excitement to Moody the next morning
when he found the evangelist waiting for him at
the same place he had found him the day before.
He and D.L. continued to meet by the river for
Moodys entire visit to town.
Edgar would ask Moody the same question
that he had put to many different pastors. Had
God ever spoken directly to him? Asked what
had prompted the young man to pose such a
question, Edgar told Moody the stories of his early
childhood. As Edgars own reading of the Bible
revealed to him, and [his aunt] Lulu had drawn to
his attention, the Devil often spoke through spirits.
How could one be sure?
You can tell a tree by its fruit, Moody reminded Edgar, then shared stories with him of
people, many of them children, who had received
messages from God. Moody also shared his own
experience on a trip to Cleveland to hold a revival
meeting.
The planned visit was to last a few weeks and a
large audience was expected. But no sooner did he
arrive than he had a dream in which he was told
to close his meeting at once and go to London,
England. As Moody had never been to England,
and could hardly afford doing so, he was reluctant.
However, as he believed his dream to be a genuine
expression of the will of God, he prematurely ended the Cleveland revival, and at the risk of stalling
a promising career, set off for England where no
one knew who he was.
Moody felt like a stranger in London, and began doubting that his vision had been authentic.
Then one afternoon, when he was wandering the
streets in a poor section of the city, he came upon
EdgarCayce.org

a window box on a nearby tenement in which

a geranium bloomed. This was his favorite color
and flower. Stepping closer to take a closer look,
he heard an angelic voice singing a favorite hymn.
He followed the voice inside a tenement and up
the stairs to an open door. Inside was a young
crippled girl.
Oh, Mr. Moody, she said, looking up at him.
I knew God would answer my prayer and send
you here.
The experience left Moody convinced that his
coming to the childs apartment had been Gods
plan. He resumed his ministry with a prayer meeting in that same room, and eventually touched the
lives of a quarter of a million or more people in
England. I know it was God who spoke to me,
Moody told Edgar.
Edgar would cherish his conversations with
Moody as much as he did the evangelists Union
Tabernacle revival meetings. In each new sermon,
Edgar would find what seemed like a special
message intended just for him. Simply listening to
Moody, Edgar said, sent chills up his spine. What he
remembered most was the last morning they met.
Edgar had arrived before sunrise and found
Moody holding a stick and making marks in the
soil, just as the Book of John reported Jesus having
done. Moody asked Edgar what he was going to
do with his life. Edgar confessed that he wished
to be a minister, like him. Moody advised him to
be true to the spirit of that vision, but to know
that there were many different ways to serve God
besides the pulpit. He could be a missionary or
teach Bible study. He would know the right path
when the time came.
For many years to come, long after Moody had
died, Edgar would reflect on how special their
meetings had been. And though he never again
spoke personally with him in the flesh and blood,
Moody would appear in both his dreams and
trance-induced visions.
In one trance vision, Edgar was on a moving
passenger train riding in an ornate white and
gold Pullman with plush club chairs. Outside he
could hear the noise of the wheels rolling on the
tracks and the blasts of the train whistle. His fellow
passengers were preachers dressed in white robes,
many of whom Edgar had heard preach as a youth
in Hopkinsville. Though long since dead, they appeared to Edgar as they did at the height of their
careers. Conversing with them, Edgar learned that
they were on their way to attend a revival meeting
in which John the Disciple was to speak. Edgar was
along for the ride.
April-June 2015

Among the passengers was Sam Jones, who

was making jokes and chewing tobacco just as he
did when he was a circuit riding revivalist. When
Jones spit out the tobacco juice, Edgar was taken
aback, surprised at the preachers lack of decorum
in such a fine Pullman. As Edgar himself wanted a
cigarette, he queried Jones: Sam, arent you afraid
you will get the tobacco juice on the cushions?
Jones didnt think anything of it. In Edgars dream,
life went on as normal in the afterlife as it did when
he was in the flesh and blood.
Another passenger was Dwight Moody, whom
Edgar was especially pleased to meet again after
so many years. He asked Moody if he remembered
meeting him in Hopkinsville. Oh, yes, Moody
said. I remember you and I remember the tale I
told you about the little girl.
As they got to talking, Moody said that Edgar
was not in the same place as Moody or the others
on the train. You are on this same train with us
right now, but dont forget you have to go back
and dont you get too far away.
The other passengers, pleased to be together,
were discussing sermons they had given and
what had been their experience in the after-life.
One preacher said that he thought he had gotten
it right when he was in the pulpit, while others
didnt think that they had.
Jones said, Well things are quite a bit different from what I preached or imagined they
were. Then he turned to George Stuart and said,
George, dont you find it that way?
George said that things were indeed quite
different. We are... still going to meetings; the
only difference is that we are being preached to
instead of preaching, for we have found that we
didnt know it all.
At another point in the dream all of the preachers turned to Moody to find out what he thought.
D. L., how do you find it? Jones asked.
Moody replied: Well, it isnt so different. You
know what we called human nature is still human
nature. It isnt so different.
Edgar had the impression that these men were
having just as good a time in the afterlife as they
did when they were alive. He wanted to continue
the journey with them to hear Disciple John speak,
but was counseled to disembark before they
reached a tunnel that lay ahead.
You must get off before it goes too far, Cayce
was warned.
In similar visions he experienced in trance,
Cayce always had to get off the train. However,
there was one dream he had in 1942 in which he

arrived at his destination. The dream made such

an impact on him that he wrote it down for later
study and reflection:
I was sitting alone in the front room [of my
Virginia Beach house] playing solitaire when there
was a knock at the front door. When I went to the
door a gentleman whom I did not recognize said,
Cayce, I want you to go with me to a meeting this
evening. At first I said, But I seldom go out in the
evening... He insisted I should go with him and I
did. As I went out I realized that another person
was waiting for us in the street. We walked
on as if into the air, up and up, until we came to
where there seemed to be a large circus tent... We
approached the flap of the tent, and as he pulled
the flap back, I for the first time, realized that the
two men with whom I had been walking were
the evangelists Dwight L. Moody and Sam Jones.
In Cayces dream, they entered the tent, which
was filled to overflowing with inspirational
religious leaders, some of whom Edgar recognized, and some he did not. And then, Cayce
remembered:
It seemed that there was... lightning in the distance. With the lightning there was a noise, not of
thunder but of wind, yet nothing seemed to stir...
When I asked one of my companions what it was,
I was told The Lord our God will speak to us. Then
a voice, clear and strong, came as from out of the
cloud and the lightning and said, Who will warn
my children? Then from out of the throng before
the throne came the Master... He spoke saying, I
will warn My brethren. The answer came back,
No, the time is not yet fulfilled for you to return...
Then Mr. Moody spoke and said... send Cayce, he
is there now. Then the Master said, Father, Cayce
will warn My brethren.
Here the dream ended. But the message for
Cayce remained.

The Readings

Connecting to the Akashic Records: Sincerity of Purpose

This reading 1500-4, was given for a 53-year-old woman, on
July 16, 1938, regarding her life reading given with the wrong
birth year.
EC: Yes, we have the entity, the enquiring mind of the entity,
[1500]; together with the information which has been given in
Life Reading [1500-3]. Ready for questions.
Q. In the suggestion for my Life Reading, did using the date
1887 as my birth date instead of 1884 make any difference in the
information which might have come through?
A. As we have indicated through these channels, respecting
sources and manner of interpretation of the records of an entity,
that as given was the interpretation as we find of the experiences
of that entity now known as [1500].
As to what might have been is just the same as the choice one
makes in making any statement. That as is so stated is accepted
as an individuals interpretation, and that as given is given with
that as the premise of interpreting.
In this instance, as we find, the sincerity of the purpose of the
seeker has kept and does keep in the forefront.
Do not ever expect the better self to be more sincere than that
lived and expressed in the material self; for one is the shadow of
the other.
Q. Was that Life Reading with the incarnations mine?
A. As just given.
Q. Why is it necessary then to have the birth date at all, in
seeking a Life Reading?
A. Many, as has been notedor may be noted if there is a
study, have not known their birth date; and the Reading or the
interpreting of that lived has been given. Others, where there
has not been the ability to give same, have not been able to be
interpreted. The cause is just as has been stated. The sincerity of
purpose, of desire, on the part of the seeker makes that through
which a premise may be established. And the interpreting then is
in keeping with that purpose.
To give the date, the hour, is in keeping with the expressing of
sincerity. And where there have been even attempts to shield, or
to seek for an activity that is shielding the dateyet the sincerity
prompted the individual to give that correction in its seeking, the
much better interpretation, the more helpful, has been received.
This then would lead this entity to say, Then has that which
has been given me been the interpretation in toto?
It was not selfs fault here that a date was misapplied. The
entitys activities have been viewed. An interpretation with the
desire to make same helpful, practical in the daily experience, has
been given.
58

Q. Please give the exact hour of birth.

A. Three twenty-two (3:22) p.m.
Q. Have I any clairvoyant powers which could be developed?
A. Every entity has clairvoyant, mystic, psychic powers. This
entity, owing to its indicated developments, has clairvoyant and
psychic powers. The intuitional, which is both clairvoyant and
psychic, is the higher development; and this may be applied
in the teachingwhich has been indicated as an experience
through which greater expression of self may be given than in
most fields. If this is used in the application of metaphysical interpretations, it will be the better for self, and the entity itself may
make same more practical in the experience of those she attempt
to teach or direct.
But ever know the source of thy information, that it is in the
metaphysical or intuitional experience of the souls that may
attune to the spiritual or creative force from withinand there is
an advocate with the Father. The promise is in that He gave, Lo,
I am with youalways!
Q. What steps should I take to accomplish this?
A. First, it must be lived, desired, practiced within self, in its
dealings with its fellow man. Do not teach that which is only
theory. Live in thy own experience that thou would teach thy
neighbor, thy brother.
Q. Is my future work to be accomplished with Metaphysics?
A. This depends upon the choice of self. As just indicated, this
may be made a more expressive channel through which activities
may be made to bring the greater peace and harmony within the
experience of self.
Q. What special line?
A. This again must be a choice. It should be along greater
spiritual lines, if there would be the assurance ever within self.
That it may take on at times great healing abilities is not to be
sought other than as He gives the expressionthat which is in
the experience of all; to some it is given to be exhorters, to others
teachers, to others healers by laying on of hands, others healers by
prayer, to one the interpreting of tongues, to another the speech
by tonguesbut all of the same Spirit, the consciousness of the
Christ abiding within self. Not only by acclaim but by practical
application of the Christ-Spirit in thy daily walks, thy daily talks;
and thy dealings with thy fellow man.
Let him that approacheth then the throne of service do so
rather in that attitude that may be expressed in thisin thine
own words: Here am I, O God! Use thou me in the manner, in
the channels, in the ways that I may the betterthrough the love
thou hast shown me in the gift of the promises in the Christ
glorify thee before my fellow man!...
