Case Study: Group

The Tangles Garments is a leading garments factory in Bangladesh. It was


established in 1986 with only 50 machines in Gazipur. Now, the factory has 7
production lines involving large number of machines. The company is a sister
concern of RNR Group. In its vision and mission statement, the company
emphasizes on optimal utilization of human resources to ensure highest level of
employment and they aspire to be labor intensive in every sector of investment.
The company manufactures readymade garments and woven apparels with a
present production capacity of 150,000 pieces per month. It employs 700 people.
The raw materials include fabric, trims, cartoon, button, tape and poly bag.
Currently, the wage is BDT-2500/= as gross salary for all the workers per month.
On average, the number of hours the employee works exceeds 70 hours per
week and the company doesnt provide any training to its workers. However, the
workers are paid double the amount for their each hour of over-time.
At times, the workers have to work continuously for days in order to meet
deadlines. Although, the company allows 10 days leave in one year. The
company is thinking about increasing the number of leaves but nothing is fixed
yet.

Case Study: Tanzir Halims Group


The Rio PLC is a leading cement manufacturing company in Bangladesh. It was
established in 1990 in Rangpur. The factory has vast production lines involving
large number of machines; acquiring a space of about 85 hectares.
For the last 3 years the company is incurring profit. The company employs 2500
workers.
Currently, the wage is BDT-4000/= as gross salary for all the workers per month.
On average, the number of hours the employee works exceeds 70 hours per
week and the company doesnt provide any training to its workers. However, the
workers are paid double the amount for their each hour of over-time.
At times, the workers have to work continuously for days in order to meet
deadlines. Although, the company allows 20 days leave in one year. The
company is thinking about increasing the number of leaves but nothing is fixed
yet.
The workers do not have any kind of out-fit. There are different types of work
within the factory. Some workers work directly with the machineries, some works
in the ware houses, some works at the uploading and downloading the cement
bags, and others work at the packing sections and so on.

Requirements:
1. The negotiation will continue up to 30 minutes. Make sure by the end of it
you can come up with reasonable solutions.
2. For the trade-unions, please bring 5 copies of your demands.
3. Make sure you have the reference ready when you are using laws and
legal rights.
Guideline:
1. Please get a copy of labor union book. In this book you will get a lot of
issues that you can raise during the session.
2. Make sure you all are not choosing the same case study; it will increase
competition among groups.
3. This book is important for both management and trade union, it will help
the management to decide whether the demands of trade union are valid
or not.
