During the 1972 election, 5 men were arrested for
breaking into the Democratic National Committee
headquarters at the Watergate Complex in Washington.

Involvement was traced to officials of the
Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP).

In March 1973, the White House was charged with trying to cover up its connection to the break-in.
In April, Nixon accepted the resignations of several of his top aides but denied any personal
involvement.

In July 1973, a former White House staff member testified that there were secret recordings of
presidential conversations. Nixon refused to turn them over and had the lead Watergate prosecutor
fired, provoking a public outcry.

In December 1973, Nixon finally released seven of the nine tapes. They revealed the president's
connection to the break-in as well as a number of other abuses of power. On August 5, 1974, Nixon
was forced to supply transcripts that clearly showed his direct involvement in the cover-up.

Faced with almost certain impeachment and removal from office, Nixon announced his decision to
resign on August 8, 1974. Vice President Gerald Ford succeeded him the next day.
