Introduction
Auxiliary heater
The auxiliary heating system allows us to set the
optimal climate conditions in the vehicle interior
using the heating or ventilation mode so that the
vehicle interior is already heated, if necessary
ventilated, before entering the vehicle.
By using the auxiliary heating system, we prevent
the frosting and fogging of the glass panes which
would otherwise obstruct the driver's view.
Wearing heavy winter clothing in the vehicle reduces the effectiveness of the seat belt - the play
between the belt and the person's body increases
because the seat belt does no longer fit tightly
across the body.
Wearing appropriate clothing in the pre-heated
vehicle interior increases the protective effect
of the seat belt and the responsiveness of the
driver.

Types of auxiliary heaters

The auxiliary heater (further referred to as AH) is
part of a heating system which heats the inside of
the vehicle, possibly the engine, regardless if the
engine is running or not.

The core of any such auxiliary heater is the combustion chamber, into which the combustion air is
directed by means of the fan and where it mixes
with the petrol and diesel fuel supplied from the
fuel tank of the vehicle. The air-fuel mixture is
ignited by a glow plug. The resulting combustion
gases are diverted by means of the exhaust system of the AH.

Auxiliary heaters are divided into two basic types:

AUXILIARY HOT AIR HEATER

AUXILIARY HOT WATER HEATER

Auxiliary hot air heater

The auxiliary hot air heater is used and installed
primarily in cabins of lorries and machines, such
as excavators, cranes, bulldozers or larger vans,
ships' cabins etc.

Auxiliary hot water heater

The hot water heater is used mainly in passenger
vehicles. Compared with hot-air systems, it offers
the possibility of preheating the engine itself and
the use of the ventilation distribution system.

An advantage is the rapid heating of the individual area, the low consumption, a low noise level
It has compact dimensions and is placed directly
and the possibility of countless hours of operation in the engine compartment.

the emissions and not least the engine wear are
reduced due to the already warmed-up engine.

Introduction
Combustion conditions
The auxiliary heater is a heating system that
burns fuel. During this process, energy is released in the form of heat, which subsequently
heats the liquid in the cooling circuit of the vehicle.
The combustion process is determined by three
basic factors:
1. Actual fuel raw material which is converted
into heat energy.
The fuel from the fuel tank of the vehicle is
injected into the combustion chamber of the
auxiliary heater by means of the dosing pump
of the AH.
2. Actual oxygen enables the combustion during which the fuel is converted into energy.
The air supply is ensured by means of a fan
which is a component of the body of the auxiliary heater.

3. Required temperature prerequisite to ensure the flash point.

After activating the auxiliary heater, the electric
current is conducted to the glow plug, which
operates on the principle of electrical resistance and is heated by applying voltage.

Function principle of the auxiliary heater
The fuel from the fuel tank of the vehicle (petrol or
diesel) is transferred to the heating unit by means
of a special pump. This is where the fuel and air
mixes as it enters the combustion chamber via
the venturi nozzle. The air is fed into the system
by a fan, which is located in front of the nozzle,
whereas the mouth of the fan is equipped with
a silencer. The glow plug which extends into the
combustion chamber is intended for the ignition of
the mixture. The heat released during the combustion heats the exchanger, which in turn heats
the water which flows through it. The exchanger
is connected to the cooling circuit of the vehicle.

Venturi nozzle

Combustion air fan

The circulation of the liquid in the water circuit is

ensured by the pump of the auxiliary heater. The
combustion gases emitted during the firing process are diverted through the exhaust gas pipe
which is fitted with a silencer.
The control unit of the Thermo Top V system
is a direct component of the heating unit. The
temperature at the exchanger is monitored by two
sensors - the temperature sensor and the overheat sensor.

Activation of the auxiliary heater

Conditions for the activation:

After activating the auxiliary heater, it is prepared

for operation.

A properly charged vehicle battery (a minimum

voltage of 11.5 V is required for the faultless operation of the electrical components of the AH.)

The glow plug including the flame arrester Q8,

the combustion air fan V6 and the circulation
pump V55 are put into operation.

Sufficient fuel (if too little fuel is present in the

fuel tank - the fuel gauge is in the red field, the
auxiliary heater control unit J364 does not activate the auxiliary heater.)

The dosing pump V54 starts after 30 seconds

and the combustion air fan V6 operation is
suspended for 3 seconds. Subsequently, the
combustion air fan V6 speed is increased in two
ramps and increases again within 56 seconds to
full load.
After the stabilisation phase (constant speed) of
15 seconds, the combustion air fan V6 speed is
again increased in a ramp within one cycle (50
seconds) to around the full load.
After reaching full load during the fuel transfer,
the glow plug including the flame arrester is
deactivated Q8 and the combustion air fan V6
speed stabilises itself at full load. During the next
45 seconds, the glow plug including the flame
arrester Q8, monitor the flame condition. Then
begins the automatically controlled heating operation.

Control of the auxiliary heater

The auxiliary heater is designed to increase the
temperature of the coolant.
When the coolant temperature reaches 72C,
the auxiliary heater control unit J364 enables the
auxiliary heater to switch to the energy saving
part load operation.
When the coolant temperature rises to 76.5C,
the auxiliary heater control unit J364 enables the
auxiliary heater to enter a control idle period.
If the coolant temperature drops during the control idle period to below 71C within 900 seconds
(15 mins), this causes the heating unit to perform
a full load operation.

In case of a no-flame condition or a flameout

based on a malfunction, the fuel supply is

Electromagnetic valve of the coolant N279

After starting the auxiliary heater, the electromagnetic valve shuts off the flow of water to the engine
and now the heat from the AH is only made available to the coolant flowing to the exchanger, which
in turn heats the air directed into the interior of the
vehicle.
This valve is not used in an auxiliary heater in
combination with TSI petrol engines (T-FSI) and
diesel engines with a particle filter - DPF.
On these engines, the auxiliary heater heats the
water in the entire cooling circuit and thus the
engine block as well.

Safety conditions for the use of the

auxiliary heater
The auxiliary heater must not be used within
a closed area! The AH produces combustion
gases which could cause poisoning. Therefore,
the vehicle must not be within a closed area,
such as in the garage, when activating the AH.
When filling up with fuel, the auxiliary heater
must always be switched off, otherwise there is
a risk of fire!
When using the AH, you should not stand on
a surface that could ignite easily from the hot
exhaust gases of the auxiliary heater, for example, dry grass.

Exhaust system
The heating unit is fitted with a separate exhaust
system, which consists of the exhaust pipe and the
silencer.
The exhaust system directs the resulting exhaust
gases independently from the exhaust management
system of the vehicle.
The length of the exhaust system is well defined and
coordinated with the pulsating combustion within
the heating unit. For safe operation, it is therefore
required to adhere to the established length of the
exhaust pipe.

Thermo Top C
Operation
The Thermo Top C auxiliary heater is equipped with
a timer that allows the activation of the AH to be
programmed.
The clock makes it possible to store three activation
periods, whereas only one can be activated each
time.
The system can also be supplemented by a remote
control with Telestart transmitter T91.
The receiver of the remote control is then located
under the dashboard - to the left of the steering
column.
