Vinelands
Early Writers
Editor Frank D. Andrews, a contemporary who
knew many of the writers, gives us a unique view
into the personalities of some of them.

n his survey of the towns early writers, Frank D. Andrews, the early 20th
century editor of the Vineland
Historical Magazine, selected a number of authors from diverse fields to illustrate how the areas cultural climate developed in the final decades of the 19th century.
What differentiates this overview from
other articles about Vinelands literary elite
is the fact that Andrews was not only
acquainted with the works of these individuals, but he knew many of the writers as
well. This allows us a unique look into the
personalities of those about which he wrote.
Andrews was witness to the influx of settlers who turned to Vineland for its healthy
climate. Vinelands reputation as a health
resort, as well as the home of an industrious
and intelligent people induced many persons
about to retire from an active life, to locate
here, he writes. Author Raymond St. John
Perrin was one of them. Perrin was only a
temporary resident, a New York native who
would later return to his home state.
Andrews reveals that the author chose
Vineland for its quiet restful community in
order to write one of his books.
According to Andrews, Perrin was
devoted to the study of philosophy and
was a lecturer of ability and a delightful
conversationalist. When the writer took
time out from his craft, he made friends
among the literary people of the place, and
was the pleasant gentleman to all.
Once Perrin completed his book, the 300page Evolutions of Knowledge, A Review of
Philosophy, he left this area, taking his manuscript and memories with him. Shortly
after his departure, the book was published.
A.E. Newton, a former editor and preacher, took up residence in Vineland with his
wife, settling comfortably in a home located
on the Boulevard. Newton was drawn to the
town for its restorative capabilities. An outof-door life on a farm was thought best for
recuperation, Andrews explains. Farming,
however healthful it may be, is not always an
agreeable occupation for a literary worker,
and in this case proved too strenuous to continue Abandoning the agricultural life,
Newton eagerly returned to the literary
world he had briefly left behind.

The author and his wife often hosted

Vineland residents at his home. To those
who were privileged to enter their circle of
friends and listen to reminiscences of experience at home and abroad it was a treat not
to be forgotten, Andrews writes.
Even political figures made a name for
themselves in the field of writing here in
Vineland. Joseph A. Conwell, a Delaware
native who served two terms as mayor of
Vineland and was an active worker in the
development in this place, was known for
writing sketches and newspaper articles. But
he also used his background as a physician
to write Medical Therapy, a work Andrews
calls a useful treatise. Conwells Manhoods
Morning, a popular book that catered to young
men and Religious Forces and Other Activities
in the History of Vineland, N.J., released as a
pamphlet, were the former mayors published
contributions that earned him Andrews
praise as writer beyond question.
One of the more interesting authors to
settle in Vineland was William T. Dantz, a
native of Pennsylvania who became the editor of the Vineland Daily Republican newspaper. Before arriving in southern New Jersey,
Dantz spent some years in North Dakota, living on a ranch near the location President
Theodore Roosevelt favored for his annual
hunting trips. Dantz and Roosevelt soon
developed a friendship that would last until
the presidents death.
Dantz transformed his interest in the history of North Dakota, particularly the
Badlands and its legendary lawlessness into
what Andrews describes as faithful presentations of the wild life on that frontier as he
saw it. But in Andrewss assessment,
Dantzs depiction of Teddy Roosevelt
remains the strongest component of the
authors career. His reminiscences of
Roosevelt during that period [of his presidency], the Roosevelt who could control
men by force of character, and believed in a
square deal, reveal the power and nobility of
the human mind supported by righteousness, Andrews writes.
Vinelanders may have caught a glimpse
of those characteristics during Roosevelts
brief stop here while on the campaign trail
in 1912. I

Crouthamel Receives Presidents Volunteer Award
Jacob Crouthamel, a volunteer at the YMCA of
Vineland, has been honored with a Presidents
Volunteer Award for his exemplary service. This
national award recognizes people of all ages who
have given significantly to help their communities.
It is granted by the Prudential Spirit of
Community Awards program on behalf of
President Barack Obama. The purpose of the
recognition is to demonstrate and spotlight the
contributions Americans make to the vitality and
health of their communities.
Crouthamel is a ninth grade student at Delsea
High School. He volunteers at the YMCA with
youth sports, teaching athletic skills and sportsmanship. When I started volunteering, I was
nervous, he said. As I taught the kids, Ive seen
that sports can make them a better person. Not
everyone has the best life, but you can really see
the joy in kids faces when they make a basket.
The 15-year-old added, I think that what Ive done has impacted the community and the kids who are part of the Ys Youth Sports program.
His mother, Nicole Crouthamel, agrees. Jacobs participation with youth
sports has helped the young kids to grow, and its helped Jacob, too. Sports can
teach core values and social responsibility and help the participants to learn
responsibility. She is naturally proud of her accomplished son.
For his part, Jacob said, I felt so honored to receive this award.
The Crouthamel family resides in Franklinville.

INews in Brief
Charter School To Build
Forever Home
Determined to establish a permanent
home, the Vineland Public Charter School
plans to begin construction on a new K-8
elementary school to open in time for the
2016-2017 school year. This is being done in
cooperation with investor, Highmark
Schools, currently bidding on a 25-acre parcel of property in Vineland, where the
school is to be built.
In a letter sent home to parents on May
28, 2015, Ann F. Garcia, Ed.D, Executive
Director, Vineland Public Charter Schools
explained interim plans for housing students for the 2015-2016 school year.
Our plans are to enter into a short-term
lease agreement with the owners of two
local facilities to house our students while
the new school is being built, said Garcia.
Pending approval from the NJ
Department of Education, our plan is to
relocate Grades K-4 at the South Vineland
United Methodist Church at 2724 South
Main Road, in Vineland. Grades 5-8 would
be housed at 1101 Wheaton Avenue in
Millville, owned by Glassworks, LLC.
While having everyone in one location is
the ideal solution, we are certain that our
parents will work with us during this interim periodand find our permanent home
well worth the wait.
In addition, Garcia noted that the
Vineland Public Charter School Board of
Trustees plans to hire a consultant to help
coordinate the transportation of students
with the City of Vineland Public Schools.
Dr. Garcia and the Vineland Public
Charter School Administration will hold a
series of information meetings for parents.
These will be held on:
Wednesday, June 3, at 4:15 p.m.
Thursday, June 4, at 4:15 p.m.
Both meetings will be held in the
Vineland Public Charter School gymnasium.
The Vineland Public Charter School was
recently rated as the number one public
school in Cumberland County. Its mission
is to provide a nurturing, supportive, creative, and actively engaging environment
for students and families that facilitates the
development of well-educated and responsible young adults with a life-long love of
learning. For more information, visit
http://vinelandpubliccharterschool.org.

within their respective communities, yet

relatively few have an understanding of
Habitats mission. While researching key
findings from community studies, they
found the following on the installation of
visual arts: Art is proactive and inventive, it
conveys societal issues visually and due to
its locality in the public, has longer term
benefits for the individual and community.
From CCHFHs perspective this is one
of the most exciting and emotionally intimate additions they have made to their
construction process. Its reflective of our
missionwere not building houses, were
building homescenters of belonging; and
what better way to foster pride and personalized roots for our soon to be homeowners
than through art. The current home build
on 3321 N. Delsea Drive for the SanchezDuprey family is just the beginning. The
next home that is slated for an artistic
makeover will be a property in Port Norris
that CCHFH recently acquired. While
Habitat International has a stock structural
caricature for each of its homes, in
Cumberland County, no two homesteads
will ever be the same.

I Downtown Vineland
{ BY RUSSELL SWANSON, EXEC. DIRECTOR, VDID / MAINSTREET VINELAND }

Summer Full
of Events
Help us to make our downtown events shine
brighter than the sun this summer.

best it can be. The third Saturday of each

month, starting at 9 a.m., a group of volunteers meet at the mini-parks at Landis
Avenue and the Boulevard. From there they
branch out to cover square blocks throughout our downtowncleaning up trash,
straightening up, and making things look
good.
It started last month and we want to see
it keep growing. If youre from an organization, see if theyd like to help and bring
some fellow members. If you know another
organization that would be interested,
spread the word to them or just let us know.
If youre by yourself or can just bring a
friend or two, that would be great also. The
more help we have, the more we can do and
the easier it becomes to get the job done. Its
good exercise and you have the satisfaction
if knowing that youre part of a grass-roots
movement to keep our downtown clean and
put an added shine on our downtown
events.
I want to thank those who came out last
Saturday to help celebrate the grand
reopening of Landis MarketPlaces bookstore, A Novel IdeaChapter Two. They
have set up in the back of the markets
upper level and have a great new look.
Robin Hope Designs has also relocated to
the back and more exciting changes are on
the way. In addition, we plan to have a special event in the market every weekend, so
keep reading this column and well fill you
in on developments.
Meanwhile, come out to celebrate
Landis MarketPlaces anniversary this
weekend and the era of chrome and fins the
following week, but also take the opportunity to shop the rest of the Avenue and help
us make our downtown look its best. I

n last weeks column, I gave the details

of our great double-header of events
coming up to open this monththe
Landis MarketPlace Fourth Anniversary
Celebration this Thursday, Friday, and
Saturday and, the following Saturday, the
24th annual Cruise Down Memory Lane.
This is just the beginning of a summer full
of activity and I want to let you know some
great ways that you can help bring some
additional luster to our downtown for these
events and those to follow. Theyre not that
hard, they can be fun, and they will help
make our great summer events even greater.
Remember to shop our downtown
businesses.When you come down for
Landis MarketPlace Anniversary event or
Cruise Down Memory Lane, its easy to get
caught up in the hooplathe horse-andbuggy rides, the face-painting for the kids,
and, on Cruise night, the classic cars lining
Landis Avenue. We have, however, an
avenue full of businesses that are there to
serve you. Enjoy the atmosphere and the
ambience of the events, get caught up in the
moment, but also take some time and look
over our businesses. The business owners
eagerly anticipate a street full of potential
customers and would be all too happy to
have that additional business.
A key mission of Main Street Vineland is
to help our downtown businesses and having these events as an opportunity to do so
helps to fulfill that mission. So, while the
Landis MarketPlace Anniversary
Celebration centers around the market, take
some time and walk up and down the
downtown and help us make it a truly
downtown-wide celebration, as well. Even
if stores are closed by the time the Cruise
gets underway, do some window-shopping
for that special item so you can come back
during the week to buy it.
Help to keep our downtown clean
through Adopt-a-Block.Pride in our
downtown and the events offered starts
with making our downtown area look the

The Ellison School students got an unexpected visitor on

Earth Day; they welcomed Rocco the Roach into their
Science classroom. Rocco is a Madagascar hissing cockroach whose scientific name is Gromphadorhina portentosa.
These cockroaches are one of the largest of their species
reaching 2-3 inches at maturity. As the name suggests, they
are from the island of Madagascar off the coast of Africa.
Unlike most cockroaches, they are wingless, but are excellent climbers. They can even scale smooth glass. Ellison
students loved meeting Rocco and some were even brave
enough to hold him.

Appreciation
Dinner
There were lots of people to thank, money to raise
and theres still time to bid on Wedding in a Box.

{ 22 } the grapevine | JUNE 3, 2015

s you may have remembered

from my last article, our organization held our Annual
Volunteer Appreciation Dinner
earlier this month. The event, held at The
Greenview Inn, was an incredible success.
More than 200 supporters (quite possibly
the best turn out weve ever had) were on
hand to help us honor this years winners.
After the awards were given out, attendees
danced until midnight to the sounds of
80s music spun by our dear friend Seth
Velez of Bob Morgan Entertainment.
(Thanks Seth, a great job as always.)
The night could not have been a success
without the help of our Gala Committee
chaired by Luanne Allen. The room looked
beautiful, the prize baskets were first class
and the excitement was at an all-time high.
Special thanks to my Administrative
Assistant, Alyssa Velazquez, who kept it all
together in the weeks leading up to the
event. I, and this organization, thank you
for your hard work and dedication to
CCHFH and this event.
One award given out that night was not
included in my last article for good reason
it was a surprise. Ever since 2013, the sitting
Board President selects a Board member
who has gone above and beyond in their
service to our affiliate and presents them
with the Presidents Award. Past recipients
include Jackie Jones and Gary Beres.
This year, our current President Dave
Hanrahan, evoked executive privilege by
honoring someone who is not an active
Board member but our recently retired
Board President Linda Hinckley (also
known as the person who created the
award in 2013.) Linda, who does not like to
be recognized for her service, was on hand
to receive her richly deserved award.
Although she no longer serves on our
Board, she continues to remain active on
various committees, Gala and Family
Selection just to name two. Congrats Lin.
Now it should come as no surprise to
anyone that in addition to celebrating
another successful year and honoring
some really special people, we also sought
to add a few dollars to our construction
account that evening. Im happy to report
that we did just that! It all started when

Keith German from Fulton Bank of NJ

presented a $15,000 check to be used
towards the construction of a home in
Vineland slated for Iris Acosta and her
family. (Groundbreaking this summer
youve been warned.) Iris was on hand to
accept the check on our behalf. Thanks
Fulton Bank!
Our silent auction was chock full of
items that garnered the interest of so many
attendees. The bidding was fast and furious. Thanks to the BIDDIT software program developed by BC Technologies of
Vineland, the auction surpassed our
expectations. The software allows people
to bid on silent auction items via iPads,
from their cell phones or via the internet.
(Say good-bye to the days of having to walk
up and write your bid on a paper sheet,
how uncivilized.)
One item remains available to bid on.
This year, the committee decided to
create a Wedding In A Box and allows
brides-to-be (grooms too) to bid on a wedding package that includes offers/gift certificates from 12 vendors that cover just
about every aspect of planning a wedding.
Some of the items include a photography
package, limousine rental, travel, flowers,
receptions, wedding cakes and more. The
box has a combined value of more than
$6,000. Bidding starts at just $500.
To view the contents of the box and
place a bid, visit our website, www.cumberlandhabitat.org and look for the
Wedding in a Box ad on our home page.
From there, just create an account and bid
away. But I wouldnt wait, the bidding
ends in a couple of weeks.
If you know someone getting married,
or thinking about it, please tell them about
this great way to save money, while at the
same time, helping a great organization. I

announced partner families.

The GVCC works on behalf

of our members to advance
responsible public policy that
ensures the business community has the resources, infrastructure, and opportunities to keep
our regions economy strong
and growing. The GVCC Legislative Committee wants you to know about some
pieces of legislation that may affect your business.
The GVCC is in full support of proposed bill A4120. Both of our District 1
Assemblyman Andrzejczak and Assemblyman Fiocchi co-sponsored this bill. We
will continue to follow it as it moves in the Assembly.
A4120 STATEMENT
This bill extends the designation of urban enterprise zones (UEZs) in the cities
of Bridgeton, Camden, Newark, Plainfield, Trenton, and the joint UEZ in the cities
of Millville and Vineland for a one-time period of 10 years, thus continuing their
participation in the Urban Enterprise Zone Program. The 10-year extension of
these UEZs is required to be designated within 90 days of the date of the expiration of the first 15 years that these UEZs were extended under current law.
Qualifying retail businesses in the UEZs are to be entitled to collect half of the
States sales and use tax (SUT).
The bill provides that, after dedicating 10 percent of the reduced rate SUT
revenues to the New Jersey Urban Enterprise Zone Authority:
1) during the first three-year extension period, the remaining revenues collected are to be appropriated for use by the UEZs in these cities;

3) during the third three-year extension period, 33 and 2/3 percent of the
remaining revenues collected are to be appropriated for use by the UEZs in these
cities and the remaining 66 and 2/3 percent are to be deposited in the General
Fund; and
4) in the final year, all remaining revenues are to be appropriated to the
General Fund.
