STRUCTURAL STEEL
To be read in conjunction with Division 1 General Requirements and
Conditions of Contract.
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 DESCRIPTION
A.

SCOPE OF WORK
Final design, supply and erection of steel structures to:

1.02 QUALITY ASSURANCE

SPECIALISTS QUALIFICATIONS
1.

Use specialist fabrication and erection company to prepare final design,


fabricate and erect the structural steelwork.

2.

Welders: provide evidence of welder's competence to undertake


specified work. Welders must have been tested to BS 4872: Part 1
using same electrodes class and welding positions which will be used in
the work. Extent of qualifications and requirements for pre-qualification
of welders shall be to BS 5920-Part 1:2000.

3.

When instructed, test welders to BS 4872: Part 1 using:


a.

Thickest place specified and/or

b.

Material with highest carbon content

c.

Electrodes of appropriate class

d.

Welding positions which will be used in the work

DESIGN CRITERIA:
1.

Details not shown on the Engineer's Drawings shall be prepared to BS


5920-Part 1:2000 and specified loading requirements.

2.

End connections of simply supported beams and girders which have no


lateral restraint shall be restrained against torsion as specified in BS
5920-Part 1:2000, clause 26a.

F. FACTORY VISIST:
Arrange prior to the final approval a visit to the steel structure
manufacturer factory, for 4 Engineers, 2 employers engineers, and 2
consultants Engineers, all expenses such as air tickets, hotel,
transportation, food, etc ... to be paid by contractor.
1.03 SUBMISSIONS

SHOP DRAWINGS:
1.

Submit shop drawings including complete details and schedules for


fabrication and shop assembly of members, and details, schedules,
procedures and diagrams showing the sequence of erection.

2.

The Engineer's review of shop drawings will be for approval.


Compliance with requirements for materials, fabrication and erection of
structural steelwork remains the Contractor's responsibility.

3.

Include details of cuts, connections, camber, holes and other pertinent


data. Indicate welds by standard symbols and show size, length and
type of each weld.

4.

Provide setting drawings, templates and directions for the installation of


anchor bolts and other anchorages to be installed by others.

5.

Before preparing detailed fabrication drawings, submit


a.
Calculation for all major connections.
b.
General arrangements drawings with individual steel members
clearly identified.

TEST REPORTS

When requested by the Engineer, submit two copies of test certificates


for steel.

ERECTION PROPOSALS:

Submit 2 copies of all test and examination results to the Engineer


immediately they are available.

As soon as possible after any part of the work or any materials are
known or suspected to be defective submit proposals to the Engineer for
further testing, inspection or replacement and obtain instructions.

1.04 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A.

DELIVERY:
1.

Deliver materials to the site in time to meet the programme.

2.

Ensure that anchor bolts and anchorage devices which are to be cast
into concrete or built into masonry are delivered in time as not to delay
the work.

STORAGE:
1.

Stores materials to permit easy access for inspection and identification.

2.

Keep steel members off the ground, using pallets, platforms or other
supports.

3.

Protect steel members and packaged materials from the weather and
deterioration.

4.

Do not store materials on the structure in a manner that might cause


distortion or damage to the members or supporting structure.

2.04 FABRICATION

Cut, shape and assemble parts to ensure accurate erection.

Use proprietary compounds to manufacturer's recommendations.

Control process to prevent excessive hardening of edges of Grades 50


and 55 steel which are to be welded.

Hardness value must not exceed 350 when tested to BS 427:

HSFG JOINTS

Check faying surfaces in steel 25mm thick or more for deformities such
as bowing, twist or rippling which will reduce slip factor to below design
limit.

2.

Remedial measures shall be approved by the Engineer.

COMPRESSION MEMBERS:

Ensure that insides of sections are dry and clean of debris before
sealing ends and openings.

SHOP ASSEMBLY:

Fix cleats to project beyond end of simply supported members.

SEALED HOLLOW SECTIONS:

Prepare ends of compression members at slices, caps or bases which


re dependent on contact for transmission of compressive stress so that
the butting faces are in full contact over an area sufficient to transmit the
full load without exceeding the permitted stress in bearing. Where not in
full contact the gap must not exceed 0.25mm.

END CONNECTIONS:

Obtain approval for thermal cutting by hand.

Check fit, profile and camber before making connections in lattice


girders and trusses which are to be assembled before delivery to site.

In addition to ring marking, Grades 50B and 50C steel are to be marked
with a continuous pale blue paint line to BS 4360, Appendix D after
rolling.

2.

Mark weathering steel or surface which will not be exposed to view on


the completed work.

3.

Mark steel which is to be shot blasted, pickled, metal sprayed or


galvanized by an approved method which cannot be obliterated.

2.05 WELDING
A.

WELDING GENERALLY:

WELDS:

Do not place any welds, except those shown on Drawings without


approval, even for temporary attachment or repair of faulty plates.

BUTT WELDS:
1.

To BS 5135, unless otherwise specified.

Use run-on and run-off plates to ensure full throat thickness at ends of
butt welds as follows:
a.
Material for plates shall be identical to material being welded.
b.
Prepare plates in same manner as parts being joined.
c.
After completion of welding remove plates and grind surfaces of
joined parts, where plates were attached, to make smooth.
d.
Retain and identify plates for inspection when instructed.

HARDENED STEEL:
1.

Modify welding process for Grade 50 steel which as been hardened by


flame cutting.

2.

Obtain approval of proposals.

2.06 BOLTING
A.

HOLES:
1.

Do not distort or enlarge holes when using a drift bar.

2.

Report any misalignment of holes to the Engineer. If faulty member is


not rejected, ream hole to correct position.

Do not enlarge holes by thermal cutting.


Where drifting of hole has produced an outward budge on the surface
on which the washer or bolt head will bear remove the bulge by grinding.

Seal bolt holes in sealed hollow sections and tubes to prevent access of
moisture.

Submit details of proposed method and obtain approval.

HSFG BOLTS:

Use in accordance with relevant part to BS 4395.

Place a washer under part to be turned.

Obtain required tension using part-turn method of tightening or


torque control method of tightening/load indicating washer/an
approved method of tightening.

WASHERS:

TAPER WASHERS:

Place under heads and nuts of all bolts connecting metal coated steel.

Place taper washers under bolt heads and nuts bearing on sloping
surfaces of joints and channels.

LOAD INDICATING WASHERS:

Place under head of bolt and prevent head from turning when
tightening.

2.07 SURFACE TREATMENTS


A.

PREPARATION AND PAINTING:


1.

See Section 09901

2.

Apply 2 coats of red oxide primer before delivery to site.

2. Apply full paint system specified for adjacent surfaces to surfaces which will
be inaccessible after assembly.
3. Protect the steel structural works in compliance to KFD accepted
specifications, using an approved fire rated in tumescent paint.

CONTACT SURFACES:

Prepare as for adjacent surfaces.

Apply primer.

Bring together shop assembled part while still wet.


Do not paint faying surfaces for HSFG bolted joints.

EXECUTION

3.01 ERECTION
A.

ERECTORS
1. Use erection company or team with minimum five (5) years erection
experience in works of a similar nature. Obtain Engineers approval to erector.

Do not make modifications to fabricated steelwork which would involve


cutting welding, etc without prior approval in writing from the Engineer.

MOVEMENT JOINTS

Provide all temporary erection bracing necessary to ensure stability of


the building during erection. Remove when it is safe to do so.

MODIFICATIONS:
1.

Do not distort steelwork and do not exceed limiting stresses specified in


BS 5920-Part 1:2000 during erection unless otherwise approved.

ERECTION BRACING:
1.

Inform the Engineer of any defects to detailing or fabrication errors.


Obtain approval of methods of rectification before starting remedial
works.

ERECTION STRESSES:
1.

E.

Obtain the Engineer's permission before starting to erect steelwork.

Ensure that bolts are in centre of slotted holes after erection of structure.

PAINT FINISH
1.

Touch up all damaged areas of shop applied primer after erection and
final lining and levelling to ensure steel structure is full protected.
