importanttodosomethingdifferent.Theideaistovaryyourbehaviouruntilyougettheresultsyou
want.
Thisvariationinbehaviourisnotrandom.ItinvolvesthesystematicapplicationofNLPpatterns.Itisalso
importanttotakeaction,sincenothingeverhappensuntilsomeonetakestheinitiative.Inshort,NLPis
aboutthinking,observinganddoingtogetwhatyouwantoutoflife.

nlpprinciple1achievingoutcomes
Theimportanceofknowingyouroutcomecannotbestressedenough.Manypeopledonothave
consciousoutcomes.Othershavenoideawhattheywantbutknowwhattheydon'twant.Theirlifeis
basedonmovingawayfromthosethingstheydon'twant.NLPstressestheimportanceofmoving
towardsthosethingsyouwant.Withoutoutcomeslifebecomesaprocessofwanderingaimlessly.
Onceanoutcomeisdeterminedyoucanbegintofocusonachievingthatoutcome.
NLPlistscertainwellformednessconditionsthatoutcomesshouldmeet.Thefirstoftheseisthatthe
outcomeneedstobestatedinpositiveterms.Thismeansthattheoutcomemustbewhatyouwant
andnotwhatyoudon'twanttohappen.Outcomesmustbecapableofbeingsatisfied.Itisbothlogically
andpracticallyimpossibletogivesomeonethenegationofanexperience.Youcan'tengageinthe
processof'notdoing'.Youcanonlyengageintheprocessofdoing.
Thesecondwellformednessconditionforoutcomesisthattheoutcomemustbetestableand
demonstrableinsensoryexperience.Theremustbeanevidenceprocedure.Unlessthisisthecase,
thereisnowaytomeasureprogresstowardstheachievementoftheoutcome.Withanevidence
procedurefortheoutcomeitispossibletodeterminewhetherornotyouaremakingprogresstowards
achievingtheoutcome.
Third,thedesiredstatemustbesensoryspecific.Youmustbeabletosaywhatyouwouldlooklike,
soundlikeandfeellikeifyouachievedtheoutcome.
Fourth,theoutcomeordesiredstatemustbeinitiatedandmaintainedbythesubject.Thisplacesthe
locus(ieposition)ofcontrolandresponsibilityforachievingtheoutcomewiththesubjectandnotwith
someoneelse.Itisnotawellformedoutcomewhensomeoneelsedoessomethingorchangesinsome
way.Allyoucandoishaveanoutcomeinwhichyoucanchangeyourselforyourbehavioursoasto
bringaboutachangeinsomeoneelse.
Fifth,theoutcomemustbeappropriatelyandexplicitlycontextualised.Thismeansthatoutcomes
mustnotbestatedasuniversals.Youmustneverwanteither'allthetime'of'never',butonlyunder
specificcircumstances.InNLPwealwaysstrivetocreatemorechoiceandnevertotakechoiceor
reducethenumberofpossibleresponses.Thegoalinsteadistomakethechoicesorresponses
availableintheappropriatecircumstances.
Sixth,thedesiredoutcomemustpreserveanypositiveproductofthepresentstate.Ifthisisnotthe
casethensymptomsubstitutionmayoccur.

consequencesforyourselfandforotherpeopleandnotpursueoutcomesthatleadtoharmtoyourself

nlpprinciple2sensoryawareness
Onceyouknowyouroutcomeyoumustnexthavesufficientsensoryacuitytoknowifyouaremoving
towardsitornot.NLPteachestheabilitytocalibrateor'read'people.Thisinvolvestheabilitytointerpret
changesinmuscletone,skincolourandshininess,lowerlipsizeandbreathingrateandlocation.The
NLPpractitionerusestheseandotherindicationstodeterminewhateffecttheyarehavingonother
people.Thisinformationservesasfeedbackastowhethertheotherpersonisinthedesiredstate.An
importantandoftenoverlookedpointistoknowtostopwhentheotherpersonisinthestatethatyou
desire.

nlpprinciple3changingbehaviour
ThethirdoperationalprincipleofNLPistovaryyourbehaviouruntilyougettheresponseyouwant.
Ifwhatyouaredoingisn'tworking,thenyouneedtodosomethingelse.Youshoulduseyoursensory
acuitytodetermineifwhatyouaredoingisleadingyouinthedesireddirectionofnot.Itwhatyouare
doingisleadingtowardsyouroutcome,thenyoushouldcontinue.If,ontheotherhand,whatyouare
doingisleadingawayfromyourgoals,thenyoushoulddosomethingelse.

nlpprinciple4timeforaction
ThefourthandfinaloperationalprincipleofNLPistotakeactionnow.Thereisnoplacefortheslogan
'Complacencyrules,andIdon'tcare.'NLPisabouttakingactionnowtochangebehaviourforyourself
andforothers,nowandinthefuture.So,touseanothercatchphrase:'Don'tdelayacttoday.'

nlppresuppositions
TherearecertainpresuppositionsunderlyingNLP.Thesearethingsthatarepresupposedineffective

Incommunicationitisusuallyassumedthatyouaretransferringinformationtoanotherperson.You
haveinformationthat'means'somethingtotheotherpersonandyouintendfortheotherpersonto
understandwhatitisyouintendtocommunicate.
Frequentlyapersonassumesthatifthey'saywhattheymeantosay',theirresponsibilityforthe
communicationisover.Effectivecommunicatorsrealisethattheirresponsibilitydoesn'tendwhenthey
finishtalking.Theyrealisethat,forpracticalpurposes,whattheycommunicateiswhattheotherperson
thinkstheysayandnotwhattheyintendtosay.Oftenthetwoarequitedifferent.
Incommunicationitisimportantwhattheotherpersonthinksyousayandhowtheyrespond.This
requiresthatthepersonpaysattentiontotheresponsetheyaregetting.Ifitisnottheresponsethey
want,thentheyneedtovarytheirowncommunicationuntiltheygetthedesiredresponse.
Thereareseveralmajorsourcesof'misunderstanding'incommunication.Thefirstarisesfromthefact
thateachpersonhasadifferentlifeexperienceassociatedwitheachwordinthelanguage.Frequently,
whatonepersonmeansbyaword(theircomplexequivalenceforthatword)maybesomething
differentfromwhatanotherpersonmeansbyit.Thesecondmisunderstandingarisesfromthefailureto
realisethataperson'stoneofvoiceandfacialexpressionalsocommunicateinformation,andthatthe
otherpersonmayrespondtotheseasmuchastheydotowhatissaid.Astheoldsayinggoes:'Actions
speaklouderthanwords,'andinNLPpeoplearetrainedthatwhenthetwoareinconflict,theperson
shouldpaymoreattentiontotheactions.

nlppresupposition2mapandterritory
Goodcommunicatorsrealisethattherepresentationstheyusetoorganisetheirexperienceoftheworld
('map')arenottheworld('territory').
Itisimportanttodistinguishbetweenseveralsemanticlevels.Firstthereistheworld.Secondcomesthe
person'sexperienceoftheworld.Thisexperienceistheperson's'map'or'model'oftheworldandis
differentforeachperson.Everyindividualcreatesauniquemodeloftheworldandthuslivesina
somewhatdifferentrealityfromeveryoneelse.Youdonotoperatedirectlyontheworldbutonyour
experienceofit.Thisexperiencemayormaynotbecorrect.Totheextentthatyourexperiencehasa
similarstructuretotheworlditiscorrectandthisaccountsforitsusefulness.

Aperson'sexperience,map,modelorrepresentationoftheworlddetermineshowtheywillperceivethe
worldandwhatchoicestheywillseeasavailabletothem.ManyNLPtechniquesinvolveyouchanging
yourrepresentationoftheworldtomakeitmoreusefulandtobringitmoreintolinewiththewaythe
worldactuallyis.

nlppresupposition3languageandexperience
Languageisasecondaryrepresentationofexperience.
Languageisatathirdsemanticlevel.Firstisthestimuluscomingfromtheword.Secondistheperson's
representationofexperienceofthatstimulus.Thirdistheperson'sdescriptionofthatexperiencebyway
oflanguage.Languageisnotexperiencebutarepresentationofit.Wordsaremerelyarbitrarytokens
usedtorepresentthingsthepersonsees,hearsorfeels.Peoplewhospeakotherlanguagesuse
differentwordstorepresentthesamethingsthatEnglishspeakerssee,hearorfeel.Also,sinceeach
personhasauniquesetofthingsthattheyhaveseen,heardandfeltintheirlives,theirwordshave
differentmeaningsfromeachofthem.
Peopleareabletocommunicateeffectivelytothedegreethatthesemeaningsaresimilar.Whenthey
aretoodissimilar,problemsincommunicationbegintoarise.

nlppresupposition4bodyandmindaffecteachother
Mindandbodyarepartsofthesamecyberneticsystemandaffecteachother.Thereisnoseparate
'mind'andnoseparate'body'.Bothwordsrefertoaspectsofthesame'whole'or'gestalt',Theyactas
oneandtheyinfluenceeachotherinsuchawaythatthereisnoseparation.
Anythingthathappensinonepartofacyberneticsystem,suchasahumanbeing,willaffectallother
partsofthatsystem.Thismeansthatthewayapersonthinksaffectshowtheyfeelandthatthe
conditionoftheirphysicalbodyaffectshowtheythink.Aperson'sperceptualinput,internalthought
process,emotionalprocess,physiologicalresponseandbehaviouraloutputalloccurbothsimultaneously

Inpracticalterms,thismeansthatapersoncanchangehowtheythinkeitherbydirectlychanginghow
theythinkorbychangingtheirphysiologyorotherfeelings.Likewise,apersoncanchangetheir
physiologyortheiremotionsbychanginghowtheythink.Oneimportantcorollaryofthis,whichwillbe
exploredlater,istheimportanceofvisualisationandmentalrehearsalinimprovingtheconductofany
activity.

nlppresupposition5widestrangeofbehavioursorchoicescontrolsthesystem
Controlinhumansystemsreferstotheabilitytoinfluencethequalityofaperson'sownandother
people'sexperienceinthemomentandthroughtime.
Thepersonwiththegreatestflexibilityofbehaviourthatis,thenumberofwaysofinteractingwill
controlthesystem.Choiceisalwayspreferabletonochoice,andmorechoiceisalwayspreferableto
lesschoice.ThisalsorelatestothethirdgeneralprincipleofNLP,mentionedpreviously.Thisprincipleis
thatapersonneedstovarytheirbehaviouruntiltheygettheirdesiredoutcome.Ifwhatyouaredoingis

theirreality.Allofaperson'sbehaviour,whethergoodorbad,isanadaptation.Everythingisusefulin
somecontext.Allbehaviourisorwasadaptive,giventhecontextinwhichitwaslearned.Inanother
contextitmaynotbeappropriate.Peopleneedtorealisethisandchangetheirbehaviourwhenitis

Behindeverybehaviourisapositiveintent.Apersonmakesthebestchoiceavailabletothematany
momentintime,givenwhothepersonisandbasedonalltheirlifeexperiencesandthechoicestheyare

Inordertochangesomeone'sinappropriatebehaviouritisnecessarytogivethemotherchoices.Once
