News from State Office

2014
AMEB Connect and online enrolments
Teachers can now access candidate information and
enrol their candidates online via AMEB Connect
www.ameb.nsw.edu.au/connect. This is a simple
three-step process whereby teachers can log on
using their email address and their existing password.
New passwords can be requested online there is no
need to phone the AMEB office!
A confirmation of enrolment is emailed within
minutes, so teachers can check that all details are
correct for their candidates. New candidates can be
entered by teachers just make sure you have their
date of birth and their full certificate name spelt
correctly before enrolling.
Teachers will be able to see their candidates
information including the status of their enrolment,
scheduling progress, results and reports. You will be
able to email your students reports directly to them.
Information regarding their examination will also be
uploaded.
For security reasons we ask teachers to ensure that
they have provided their date of birth to the office so
that we can identify them online if necessary.
This system will continue to be developed and we will
notify you by email of new features as they become
available.
In 2014 the AMEB (NSW) will continue to accept
paper enrolments by mail or email (on the 2014
enrolment form only).
However, from 2015 enrolments will be accepted
online only. Paper enrolments by mail, fax or email
will NOT be accepted in 2015. Remember when
logging on to AMEB Connect a User Guide is
available as a reference. As always, anyone who
requires assistance with an online enrolment can
contact the AMEB staff who are more than willing
to guide you through the process.

Withdrawal of May written examination

period
AMEBs online written examinations are becoming
increasingly popular with candidates and teachers,
and we are pleased to announce that higher grades
in the music syllabuses will become examinable
online in early 2014.
Due to the planned increase in availability of online
written examinations, the May written session (Music
and Speech and Performance Theory) will be
withdrawn in 2014, and traditional paper-based
examinations will be available only in the August
written session.
The table on page 26 outlines the written
examinations currently available online, and indicates
when they will become available for higher grades
and other syllabuses in 2014.

Wollongong Conservatorium of Music

and AMEB (NSW) partnership
We are very pleased to advise teachers and students
in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven areas that the
Wollongong Conservatorium of Music and AMEB
(NSW) have entered into a partnership whereby it will
be possible to hold all music examinations at the
Wollongong Conservatorium for the next three years.
We are delighted to be working in partnership with
the Wollongong Conservatorium and thank them for
their support in assisting the AMEB to provide music
examinations to their community.
Teachers and students should note that all
examinations at the Wollongong Conservatorium will
be held during school holiday periods.
We look forward to working with the local
communities of Illawarra and Shoalhaven and
examining the many talented students in this area in
the future.

News from Federal Office

2014
New syllabuses
Double Bass
AMEB is proud to announce the launch of its new
Double Bass syllabus, available for examination in all
States from 2014. As well as the comprehensive
review of the technical work requirements
culminating in Double Bass Technical Work (2013),
for the first time ever this syllabus features AMEB
grade books for Double Bass that begin at
Preliminary and extend up to Grade 4. The grade
books include exciting and challenging repertoire in
a range of styles and the syllabus also features wholly
revised manual lists that draw on some of the most
attractive recent publications for the Double Bass.
This syllabus now includes two new examinations:
Preliminary at the beginning of the syllabus and the
Certificate of Performance to cap Level 2
examinations.
This syllabus will be examined concurrently with the
Double Bass syllabus that last appeared in the 2013
Manual of Syllabuses for two years after the release
of the new syllabus. During these two years the new
syllabus will be evaluated and from the start of 2016
the previous Double Bass syllabus will no longer be
examinable.
The following publications, available from November
2013, may be used with the new syllabus:
Double Bass Technical Work (2013)
Double Bass Series 1 Preliminary Grade 4 (2013)
The Double Bass technical work found in the old
syllabus, which last appeared in the 2013 Manual of
Syllabuses, may not be used with the new syllabus.
Technical work for the new syllabus may only be
drawn from the AMEB publication Double Bass
Technical Work (2013).

Percussion
AMEB is proud to announce the launch of its new
Percussion syllabus, available for examination in all
States from 2014. For the first time, AMEB has
produced technical work publications for Percussion:

all technical work requirements for Level 1 (Preliminary

to Grade 4) can be found in Percussion Technical
Work Level 1 (2013), while all technical work
requirements for Level 2 (Grade 5 to Grade 8) can be
found in Percussion Technical Work Level 2 (2013).
This syllabus also features AMEBs first-ever grade
books for Percussion that begin at Preliminary and
extend up to Grade 4. Note that in Level 1 of this new
syllabus there are no manual lists and all repertoire is
drawn from the AMEB grade books. The grade books
feature a diverse range of works, carefully selected for
their broad appeal and pedagogical value, and include
a large number of works by celebrated Australian
composers and percussionists. The syllabus also
features wholly revised manual lists for Level 2 that
draw on some of the most attractive recent
publications for Percussion. This syllabus now includes
new examinations: Preliminary at the beginning of the
syllabus, the Certificate of Performance to cap Level 2
examinations. For the first time, percussionists can
now advance to Level 3 Associate and Licentiate
diploma examinations.
This syllabus will be examined concurrently with the
Percussion syllabus that last appeared as a 2013
downloadable single syllabus for two years after the
release of the new syllabus. During these two years
the new syllabus will be evaluated and from the start
of 2016 the previous Percussion syllabus will no
longer be available for examination.
The following publications, available from November
2013, may be used with the new syllabus:
Percussion Technical Work Level 1 (2013)
Percussion Technical Work Level 2 (2013)
Percussion Series 1 Preliminary Grade 4 (2013)
Percussion Sight-reading (2013)
The Percussion technical work found in the old
syllabus, which last appeared as a 2013
downloadable single syllabus, may not be used with
the new syllabus. Technical work for the new syllabus
may only be drawn from the AMEB publications
Percussion Technical Work Level 1 (2013) and
Percussion Technical Work Level 2 (2013).

Violin (last printed in 2011 Manual of Syllabuses)
From the beginning of 2015, the following

AMEB Music Practice Diary

During 2013 AMEB released a music practice diary
for the use of students and teachers. The diary
features headings that relate to sections to prepare
for an AMEB exam and plenty of space and
manuscript to write notes for what to practice during
the week. It includes common musical terms and
symbols, a note tree and a timeline of composers.

Online resources
Online examinations
AMEB is continuing to expand its offering of online
examinations in theory syllabuses. Online exams can
be taken at any time and come with unlimited
practice exams. Candidates receive their results
instantly for lower-grade exams and within three to
four business days for higher-grade exams. Each
successful candidate will receive their certificate in
the mail after completing their exam.

At the time of printing, online examinations were

available for Theory of Music Grades 1 to 5,
Musicianship Grades 1 to 4, and Music Craft
Preliminary to Grade 4. Higher-grade exams will
continue to be released throughout the year.
Online examinations are available from
amebexams.edu.au.

Online theory courses

AMEB now offers interactive online courses in Grade
1 and Grade 2 Theory of Music. AMEB online theory
courses allow students to learn music theory at their
own pace, independently or by supporting what is
taught in the classroom or private music studio. Once
a student has successfully completed the online
course they will be ready to do an AMEB Theory of
Music exam.
AMEB online theory courses are made up of a series
of self-guided lessons with accompanying practice
tests for each lesson. All course materials are
available for the one-year life of the course and are
suitable for both child and adult learners.
Online theory courses are available from
amebtheory.edu.au.

Email newsletter
2013 has seen the launch of the first email newsletter
produced by AMEB Federal Office. Typically the
newsletter contains a feature article on a topic of
interest to teachers, students and parents, a focus on
a particular syllabus, a chance for theory questions to
be answered, an interview with a prominent
musician, celebrations of the achievements of AMEB
students, promotional offers and more. Register to
receive the newsletter at www.ameb.edu.au.

Online syllabus and publication updates

During the year, after the release of any manual and
prior to the publication of the next manual, any
update or amendments to syllabuses or publications
can be found on the relevant syllabus page at
www.ameb.edu.au.

AMEB grade book digital recordings

AMEB is progressively making all existing grade book
recordings available in digital form. AMEB digital
recordings can be bought as albums or single tracks
from iTunes and other digital music outlets. See
www.ameb.edu.au for a list of available recordings.

Your Path to AMEB Diplomas

Starting out
Prior to Level 1 examinations, pianists can sit for a
P Plate for Piano non-graded assessment. Pianists
in the very earliest stages of their training can be
assessed after studying the pieces in any one of the
three P Plate Piano books. P Plate assessments do
not include technical work, aural tests or sight
reading they simply involve presenting a program
of three pieces from any one P Plate book. A
certificate is awarded at the completion of each book
assessment and a P Plate Piano Licence is awarded
following the Book 3 assessment.

Grade Examinations
Level 1 examinations cover Preliminary Grade
through to Grade 4 inclusive. Within these grades,
candidates demonstrate the fundamental and
developing skills required for this subject.
Level 2 examinations are incrementally more
challenging and demanding. This level includes
Grade 5 to Grade 8, and for many instruments is
often capped with the Certificate of Performance.
From Grade 6 through to Licentiate level, there is an
additional requirement of a pass in a written
examination before the certificate or diploma is
awarded. Please consult the table on page 14.
For Leisure syllabus examinations and CPM syllabus
examinations conclude at Level 2 and no additional
written examination is required.

Diploma examinations Music

Level 3 examination success leads to the prestigious
Associate, Licentiate and Fellowship Diplomas.
Successful candidates will have their name printed in
the AMEB Manual of Syllabuses edition in the year
after they receive their diploma. Bonus points are
awarded to AMEB diploma recipients towards tertiary
entrance to some universities, such as the University
of NSW. Please consult individual tertiary institutions
for more information.
Diploma reports are only available to teachers
through the online system: AMEB Connect. Please
allow two weeks from the date of examination to
receive your results. Diploma results will not be given

to anyone over the phone. Teachers will receive a

letter from AMEB (NSW) after additional requirements
have been verified.

Diploma examinations Speech and

Drama
Speech and Drama diplomas are awarded to
candidates who demonstrate maturity, conviction and
confidence in presentation and performance which
includes the ability to use advanced technical and
vocal skills.
Prerequisite requirements are in place for the ADPA
and LDPA Drama and Performance (Teacher or
Performer) diplomas to ensure that candidates have
achieved an appropriate level of knowledge and skill
to undertake the diplomas successfully. Teachers and
candidates are encouraged to use the stepping stone
of the CVCA, Certificate of Voice and Communication
Australia, to gain knowledge and experience as a
communicator before undertaking the APCA,
Associate of Professional Communication Australia
diploma.

Preparing for the AMusA practical

examination
The Associate Diploma is highly respected in the
international music community and recognises a
sophistication of musical understanding and
performance abilities that are well above the
requirements for Grade 8.
Teachers and candidates are actively encouraged to
use the stepping stone level of the Certificate of
Performance, currently offered for Piano, Violin, Cello,
Classical Guitar, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon,
Singing and Flute. This examination can follow Grade
8, providing additional performance experience and
examiner feedback as a student's technique and
interpretive skills continue to refine and develop.
The success rate for Associate examinations is much
lower than for Grade examinations. It is therefore
suggested that teachers with limited experience in
presenting candidates at Diploma level obtain advice
from a more experienced teacher before entering
candidates for AMusA.
Please consult the Teacher Support section of the
AMEB (NSW) website: www.ameb.nsw.edu.au for
useful Diploma preparation information.

The AMEB (NSW) Diploma

Presentation Ceremony
Successful Associate, Licentiate and Fellowship
candidates who have provided AMEB (NSW) with
evidence of their completion of any additional
requirements will be invited to attend the annual
Conferring of Diplomas Ceremony. Candidates who
successfully complete all requirements in 2014 will
be awarded their diplomas at a ceremony held on
Sunday 8 March 2015.
This ceremony is a wonderful opportunity to formally
recognise an artist's years of dedication and share
their achievement with peers, teachers, family and
friends. Gowns and stoles are available for hire from
AMEB (NSW).
Successful candidates who cannot be present to
receive their award in person will be admitted 'in
absentia' to the diploma and the certificate will be
mailed following the ceremony.

you can use the Find existing candidate button.
You will need their candidate number or personal
details. Once the candidate has been found,
specify the subject they are to be enrolled in.

Use the +New Candidate button if the candidate

has never previously enrolled for an AMEB (NSW)
examination, and to specify which subject the
candidate is to be enrolled in.

Specify the subject you wish to enrol the

candidate in by simply typing the subject code or
name. For example, typing sax will display a list
of saxophone subjects. Select the required
subject from the list.

Use the Make a scheduling request button to

enter a scheduling request for the enrolment.
Make sure you click on the Save scheduling
request button when you are finished.

Candidates can only be scheduled together if

they are enrolled by the one teacher.

Once you have finished entering candidate

enrolments, click the Next button to move on
to the last enrolment step, payment.

Next Getting started

After logging on, a navigation bar is displayed at

the top of the screen, which gives you access to
all major AMEB Connect functions. By default,
the Candidates function is selected and a list of
your enrolments for the current year is shown.
You can also filter the list by year, series,
examination status or by keyword.
Click on the +Enrol Candidates button in the top
left of the navigation bar.

Step 1 Series

The Examination Series dropdown list shows a

list of series currently open for enrolment. Select
the required series from the list.

Once you have selected a series, specify your

preferred examination day and select your
preferred venue from the dropdown list. If you are
a venue owner, this list includes your own venue.

If you select Other Venue, an AMEB (NSW)

venue number is required. You must have

AMEB (NSW) office.

Late enrolment fees all examinations

A late enrolment fee will apply if the enrolment and full payment are not received or
postmarked by the advertised closing date. Late fees are not refundable. The AMEB (NSW)
is not responsible for delays caused by the postal services. Teachers are therefore advised
to submit enrolments in good time.

Up to one week late

More than one week late

$55 per enrolment per candidate

Please note: Late fees do not incur GST.

Other venue/private studio

Fees

Only complete this section of your enrolment if you

want your candidates to be examined at a prearranged non-AMEB venue.

Fees cannot be transferred from one candidate to

another or from one year to the next.

We accept payment by Mastercard or Visa. If

posting, you can also choose to send a single
cheque or single money order. Make your cheque
or money order payable to AMEB (NSW) and
staple your payment to the enrolment form. If you
are paying by credit card the authorisation
section must be completed and signed by the
owner of the card.

All transactions paid by credit card will incur a

0.4% surcharge due to a NSW Government
instruction for all agencies to recoup their merchant
interchange fees. Payments made by cheque or
money order will not incur this surcharge.

If for any reason a cheque or credit card is not

accepted by the bank, a penalty fee of $15 will
be applied to each transaction.

If the studio belongs to another teacher, or is a

school venue, you must obtain permission from
the person or institution involved before enrolling
candidates.

Any hire costs and other associated expenses

for the studio/venue must be met by the visiting
teacher.

AMEB (NSW) will only assign an examiner to a

particular studio if a minimum of four hours of
examining time per instrument is available and
scheduled.

Studios must meet the criteria for use of private

studios outlined in the Policies section of the
AMEB (NSW) website: www.ameb.nsw.edu.au

AMEB (NSW) reserves the right to alter the

location of the examination to facilitate the
provision of an examiner or if the venue is not
available.

Private studio examinations are most likely to be

scheduled on a weekday.

Certification

Requests to schedule candidates together cannot

be accepted (except when siblings are enrolled
under the same teacher number). Candidates
enrolled under the one teacher number will
automatically be scheduled together.

awareness of the conditions of enrolment

agreement to abide by the regulations and the

requirements in the AMEB (NSW) 2014
Enrolment Handbook and the 2014 Manual of
Syllabuses, and the policies on the AMEB
(NSW) website: www.ameb.nsw.edu.au

Please indicate if your candidates are enrolled for

more than one AMEB examination within a given
time frame (with different teachers), or are also
enrolled for a written examination during your
examination period.

It is essential that the person who completes and

signs each enrolment is 18 years or over, and in
doing so certifies their:

awareness of their responsibility to inform

candidates and parents of these requirements,
including the refund and transfer policies.

Please indicate if you wish siblings to be

examined consecutively.

If posting, it is important to ensure that all

enrolment forms have been signed before being
submitted to AMEB (NSW). Failure to sign and
date the certification will result in the enrolment
form being returned. A $10 fee per enrolment
submission will be charged if the certification is
not properly completed.

While every effort is made to meet special

requests, not all requests (particularly Saturdays)
will be possible as scheduling depends on the
availability of venues and examiners.

Candidates who have been taught by an AMEB

examiner

Scheduling requests
Examination period availability should be noted in this
section. It is important that candidates and their
families are consulted about dates to be avoided and
these are clearly listed in this section prior to the
lodgement of your enrolment.

Please keep all special requests as brief and

clear as possible.

Requests that are not included on the enrolment

will incur a fee of $25 per candidate per
examination. Requests will not be processed
without the accompanying fee. Teachers must
ensure that candidates and their families are
aware of this fee.

Specific examination dates and times will not be

accepted.

Requests to transfer to a different postcode

period will incur a fee of $55 per candidate per
examination, up to a maximum of $330. This
request must be submitted by 6 June 2014.

Requests regarding the scheduling or nonscheduling of specific examiners will not be

considered (unless a candidate has been or is
currently being taught by a specific AMEB
examiner).

Candidates who enrol for an examination who

are, or previously have been, taught by someone
who is an AMEB (NSW) examiner, should
indicate this in the Scheduling Request section
of the enrolment. This information will ensure that
examiners are not scheduled to examine their
own candidates, either past or present.
If rescheduling is necessary due to a candidates
failure to indicate this information on the
enrolment form, additional transfer fees may
be charged.

Additional notes
School examinations

If any of your candidates are likely to be required

to take NAPLAN tests, other important
examinations or school commitments during your
scheduled examining period, please state the
dates to be avoided in the Scheduling Request
section of the enrolment. The information printed
inside the front cover of this handbook can assist
you in determining these dates.

FMusA/FSDA

FMusA and FSDA candidates MUST submit their

proposed programs to AMEB (NSW) no later than
25 April 2014. Once these programs have been
approved by the AMEB, candidates will receive a
program approval letter.

13

Photocopies of prerequisites MUST be attached

to the enrolment form (refer to the 2014 Manual
of Syllabuses).

Program notes for FMusA examinations should

be forwarded to the State Office by email in Word
format no later than Friday, 8 August 2014.

LMusA program approvals

If a program approval is needed, it should be

attached to the enrolment form. No requests for
LMusA program approvals will be accepted after
25 July 2014.

Reminders
By signing the enrolment forms and entering
candidates for examinations you have agreed to abide
by the regulations contained in this handbook and on
the AMEB (NSW) website. If you are enrolling
students for examinations, it is your responsibility to
inform your students and their parents or guardians
of all the conditions of enrolment and the examination
requirements.

Check dates carefully before submitting

your enrolment
You should be prepared for your students
examinations to be scheduled at any time during the
advertised periods. Please be aware that some of
these dates fall in school holiday periods or on
public holiday weekends and you should therefore
advise your students of the possibility of being
scheduled on those dates.
A fee of $25 per candidate per examination will be
charged for any scheduling request that is not on
the original enrolment.
Scheduling requests will not be accepted less than
two months before the commencement of the
relevant examination session or postcode period.
Further information regarding AMEB (NSW) policies
can be found on the Policies section of our website
www.ameb.nsw.edu.au

Avoiding other additional fees

The AMEB (NSW) is not responsible for delays caused
by the postal services. To allow for any irregularities
and avoid late fees, it is best to allow a few extra
days before the due closing date for enrolments to
ensure that the forms reach us in time. Envelopes
postmarked after the closing date will incur a late fee.

Confirmation of Enrolment
You will receive a computer-generated confirmation of
your enrolment(s) as soon as practicable after the
information has been processed. The Confirmation of
Enrolment is your tax invoice and your only official
receipt from the AMEB (NSW). Please promptly and
thoroughly check this important document.
The Confirmation of Enrolment provides the
opportunity for teachers to double-check that all
information relevant to their candidates has been
accurately recorded. Please advise us of any
errors immediately in writing. Failure to notify
AMEB (NSW) of any anomaly (correct name, date
of birth, grade, subject code, subject name) on
the Confirmation of Enrolment within 21 days of
the notification being sent will result in a change
fee of $25 per candidate per examination.
The way the name is spelt on the Confirmation of
Enrolment is the way it will appear on the certificate.
Replacement certificates will incur a fee of $28.50
each. It is not possible to substitute alternative
candidates. Please note that the preferred venue
listed on your Confirmation of Enrolment may be
changed, subject to suitability and availability as set
out on page 17 of this handbook. If you have NOT
received a Confirmation of Enrolment within five
weeks of the closing date, the teacher or private
entrant who signed the enrolment form should check
the progress of the enrolment via AMEB Connect
(www.ameb.nsw.edu.au/connect). If examination
details cannot be found, please telephone the AMEB
(NSW) to check the status of your enrolment.

Notice of practical examination

Every effort will be made to ensure that a Notice of
Practical Examination for each candidate
is dispatched to the teacher/private candidate
approximately three weeks before the examination.
These notices must be given to candidates for
presentation at the examination venue. Our website
provides provisional examination dates as soon as
they are scheduled. You can check these provisional
dates via the AMEB Connect section of our website:
www.ameb.nsw.edu.au/connect.
It is possible that your candidates examinations may
be scheduled on a weekday, Saturday or during
school holidays. Please check carefully the day, date,
time and venue on each candidates Notice of
Practical Examination.

Additional teacher responsibilities

Make sure your candidates instruments are

correctly assembled and tuned before entering
the examination room. This is not the examiners
responsibility.

Arrange for an accompanist (where applicable)

and cover any costs involved.

Advise candidates undertaking practical examinations

that they MUST have original copies of all the music
required for performance, in the appropriate order, at
the beginning of the examination.
Please note: No photography, or any recording devices
are permitted in any AMEB (NSW)
examinations

Other examination matters for the

teacher to note

Teachers are not allowed to alter the examination

schedule for their students under any
circumstances. Schools and private studios may
submit a timetable order change no later than
five working days before the examination.
Examiners will only accept schedule alterations
communicated from the AMEB (NSW) office.

Pre-recorded accompaniment is not acceptable,

unless specified by the syllabus. In For Leisure or
CPM syllabuses where candidates wish to use
backing tracks, ensure that your students

Practical examinations are conducted in accordance
with all syllabus requirements set out in the 2014
Manual of Syllabuses and in accordance with the

performances. AMEB (NSW) does not provide
facilities such as CD players for the use of

If a candidate presents a piece of music (other

than Own Choice or Extra List) that is not listed in
the syllabus they are enrolled for, their mark will
be downgraded. For more information, see
Regulation 25 in the 2014 Manual of Music
Syllabuses.

Refund Policy
The AMEB (NSW) enrolment, examination
preparation and scheduling processes incur
significant costs for the AMEB (NSW), irrespective of
whether candidates actually present on the day of
their examinations or not. However, if a candidate
wishes to withdraw from their examination, it must be
submitted in writing and will be considered under the
following conditions:

A full refund (less $25 per candidate per

examination administration fee) will be issued if a
written request is received by the closing date of
the relevant session or postcode period (see pages
2223 for practical examination closing dates).

A 50% refund will be issued if written advice of

withdrawal is received as follows:

Postcode Policy Sessions 03 and 10

Due to the large number of candidates entered for
the Metro Plus Music and Speech & Drama Second
Sessions, the AMEB (NSW) needs to divide the
examinations into different periods:

Please note your postcode periods carefully by

consulting the table on page 22 as the postcode
period groupings and their associated
examination dates have changed for 2014
examinations.

The teachers/enrolling persons residential

postcode (not post office box) will be used to
determine the examination period.

The studio address postcode will be used to

determine the examination period if a private
studio is being used, and it is clearly indicated on
the enrolment form.

In the event of a teacher changing address or a

candidate changing teacher between the time
of enrolment and the examination date, the
original enrolling postcode will apply.

Weekdays and Saturdays

Saturdays only

AMEB (NSW) will endeavour to schedule according to

your preference for either a weekday or a Saturday,
but this may not be possible due to limited venue and
examiner availability in that timeframe. Please ensure
candidates are made aware that an examination can
be scheduled on any day (MonSat) despite listed
preferences.

It may be possible for examination timetables in

private studios to be reordered, only if a request
is submitted in writing to the AMEB (NSW) office
not less than five working days before the
examination timetable. Teachers and/or studio
hosts are NOT to make contact with examiners
regarding timetables.

It is the responsibility of the visiting teacher to

ensure that the private studio is available and
appropriate for your students examinations.

Candidates and visiting teachers are expected to

respect the facilities at the examination studio by
waiting only in the area directed by the host
teacher, leaving the premises on completion of
examinations and not interrupting examinations in
progress.

If you elect to have your students examined at

another teachers private studio, your contact
details may be given to the venue owner.

Singing, brass, woodwind and string candidates of all

grades, and piano candidates presenting for AMEB
practical examinations at the Grade 8, Certificate of
Performance, Associate or Licentiate level at this
venue are invited to use our warm-up facilities for five
minutes per candidate before their examination.

It is unlikely that examinations will be held in

private studios on a Saturday.

Private studios

Please note that recording the whole, or any part, of

any AMEB examination is not permitted.

Warm-up rooms
As a general rule, AMEB (NSW) does not provide
warm-up rooms at examination venues. AMEB
candidates are not permitted access to rooms at any
conservatorium for the purposes of warm-up. Where
a warm-up room is provided, it is for the purpose of
warming up and tuning instruments and not for
rehearsing repertoire. Should additional time or
privacy be required, studio hire may be available at
the Clarence Street studios during business hours.
Clarence Street Level 8 Studios

There must be a minimum total of four hours

examining per instrument category before an
examiner may be scheduled to examine at a
private venue/studio. If teachers using a venue
have a combined total of less than four hours
examining, the AMEB (NSW) will organise
another venue for the examinations without
notice.

To see if your studio meets our criteria as an

examination venue, please consult the Policies
section of the AMEB (NSW) website:
www.ameb.nsw.edu.au.

Federal examinations
Federal music practical examinations (LMusA, FMusA,
LTMusA) will be held at a Sydney metropolitan venue
to be determined by the AMEB (NSW).

2014 enrolment handbook

Examinations
Queries and complaints
AMEB examinations are conducted as a formal process on a strict timetable. In order that other
candidates are not disadvantaged, it is not possible for examiners to discuss examination issues
with teachers, parents or candidates at the examination venue.
Queries or objections about examination results or examiners must be set out in writing and sent
by email or post addressed to the State Manager. Verbal objections will not be accepted and no
written complaint will be considered more than 10 working days after the examination report is
uploaded. Letters of complaint concerning an examiner will be forwarded to that examiner for
comment, after which a response will be issued by the State Manager. Teachers are NOT to
make direct contact with AMEB examiners by phone or email. All correspondence MUST be via
the AMEB(NSW) office. More information can be obtained from the Policies section of the
AMEB (NSW) website: www.ameb.nsw.edu.au.

Trainee examiners
A trainee examiner may be present during grade examinations. This examination experience is
vital for trainees in order to maintain AMEBs high examining standards. In such an instance,
the candidate will receive the Supervising Examiners result and written report.

Diploma examinations
Diploma examinations require two senior examiners. In instances where it is not feasible to
schedule two examiners in a regional area, AMusA candidates will be required to travel to
Sydney during the period 13 September to 4 October to be examined. LMusA and FMusA
examinations are held in Sydney during the September/October school holidays and/or days
surrounding this period. Transfers are not possible from Session 4.
Candidates are advised that they must bring a copy of their music for the examiners so that
they can be certain of the edition from which the candidate is working.

Provisional enrolments
Provisional enrolments will not be accepted for practical examinations.

Use of backing tracks

No CD players, iPod docks, USB ports or amps are provided at AMEB examination venues.
Teachers and candidates should note that, where permissible, if backing tracks are used instead
of live piano accompaniment, the candidate must bring their own backing tracks and ALL
associated equipment. This must be set up and sound-checked quickly to minimise disruption
to their allotted examination time.

Privacy policy
The AMEB (NSW) and the Office of the Board of Studies NSW are fully compliant with the
provisions of the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (the Act). Information
provided by teachers, candidates, examiners and other employees of the Office of the Board of
Studies is collected, stored and administered in accordance with the Act.
For more details, please consult the Policies section of the AMEB (NSW) website:

Non-English speaking candidates

Non-English speaking candidates who wish to have an accredited interpreter present at their
exam must apply to the AMEB (NSW) in writing. The cost of the interpreter service will be the
responsibility of the candidate. Accredited interpreters may be contacted through the Language
Services division of the Community Relations Commission of NSW on 1300 651 500. Fees and
booking information can be found on their website: www.crc.nsw.gov.au/services

Candidates requiring special provisions

To ensure that the examination process is accessible to all, provisions may be made for
candidates with special needs. Our policy may be found in the Policies section of the AMEB
(NSW) website: www.ameb.nsw.edu.au. Please forward a copy of the candidates medical
documentation to the AMEB (NSW) office with their enrolment form. Before the examination
AMEB (NSW) must cite, verify, approve, receive signed permission from the candidate or
their parent/guardian, if under 18, then process this request. Documentation therefore must
be provided to the AMEB (NSW) office within two weeks of submitting your enrolment.
Under no circumstances will AMEB (NSW) examiners accept medical certificates or
additional correspondence on the day of the examination.

Dress code
AMEB examinations follow a formal and structured process. Candidates are advised to consider
the occasion as they would any performance and dress appropriately.

Photocopies
Composers, authors and playwrights depend to a significant extent on royalty income from sales of
their publications, as does the AMEB. Those using photocopies of printed material should ensure
that the copies do not contravene the Copyright Act 1968. Unauthorised photocopying is illegal.
Photocopies of AMEB publications must not be taken into AMEB examinations. Please also note
the relevant paragraph under General Requirements, Practical Examinations in the 2014 Manual
of Syllabuses. You may contact APRA/AMCOS or our office to obtain a copy of the AMCOS
publication, A Practical Copyright Guide to the Use of Print Music in Australia. Please refer to the
APRA/AMCOS website: www.apra-amcos.com.au/About/Copyright.aspx for further information.

Downloaded musical scores

Candidates who present for examination using scores obtained through free download from
websites should note that they bear responsibility to ensure that copyright clearance for the use
of this material has been obtained. Candidates should note that heavy penalties apply for the
improper use of copyright material.

After scheduling
Once the date has been scheduled, it is not possible
to arrange alternative dates for practical examinations
for any reason other than on substantiated medical,
religious, compulsory school examinations or
excursions, verified work-related grounds or relevant
generally recognised days of cultural significance. No
other grounds for rescheduling will be considered.
If a candidate is unable to attend his or her practical
examination due to one of the above reasons, an
alternative date may be offered, provided that:

venues and examiners are available

a completed Request for Rescheduling form

(from the forms located on the AMEB (NSW)
website) must be submitted to AMEB (NSW) no
later than five working days after the scheduled
examination date.

If AMEB (NSW) is unable to reschedule a country

examination while examiners are still touring that
particular region, candidates requesting a transfer will
be required to travel to Sydney.
Medical reschedules must include a medical
certificate from a registered doctor stating:

that the candidate is not fit to attend their

examination on the scheduled date

when it is anticipated the candidate will be fit to

sit their examination.

Other reschedules (as outlined above) must include

an official letter from the school, workplace or
relevant organisation outlining the reason for the
candidates inability to attend the examination.
Rescheduling fees are as follows:
$55 for Level 1 (Preliminary Grade 4) per
candidate per examination
$66 for Level 2 (Grades 5 8 and Certificate of
Performance, any CPM Advancing Step) per
candidate per examination
$132 for Level 3 (Associate only) per candidate
per examination

Submit the supporting documentation and payment

to the AMEB (NSW) office. Rescheduled dates may
be offered with minimal notice. Every effort will be
made to accommodate transfers, but rescheduling
cannot be guaranteed and should not be expected.
If a reschedule cannot be arranged, the fee will be
refunded.
Please note: It is not possible under any
circumstances to reschedule examinations to the
following year.

Studio transfers
Where a teacher has arranged for examinations to be
held in a particular studio in the Metro Plus Second
Session (Music or Speech and Drama), the postcode
period of that studio will apply for examination
scheduling. If a studio has applied for a transfer to
another postcode period, all students attending that
studio will be examined in the nominated period.

Change of teacher
Teachers should ensure that they only enrol
candidates whom they are currently teaching and
who have agreed to sit for an AMEB (NSW)
examination.
In order to safeguard the interests of all parties, any
request to change the teacher listed in an enrolment
after the initial enrolment has been processed
requires confirmation from the enrolling teacher.
There will be a fee of $55.00 charged to reassign
candidates from one teacher to another or from/to
private candidate status after enrolment. A Change
of Teacher form can be downloaded from the
Teacher Support section of our website:
www.ameb.nsw.edu.au. Please complete and forward
this form to the AMEB (NSW) office with your $55
payment.
Please note: A change of teacher does not change
the exam period. The exam will still be set according

Speech and Performance Theory online examinations in 2014

Speech and performance online examinations are currently being developed and should be
available in 2014.

How to enrol for online written examinations

AMEB online examinations can be taken online at any time, within 12 months of purchase.
Candidates and teachers benefit from access to tutorials, unlimited practice examinations and
quick results. For more information about how to enrol for AMEB online examinations, or if you
have any problems go to www.amebexams.edu.au.
Note: there is no limit on how many online exams a candidate can sit in any given period.

amebnsw
27

Written Examinations
Written examinations are conducted in accordance
with syllabus requirements set out in the AMEB
2014 Manual of Syllabuses and in accordance with
the policies and procedures in this handbook.
Candidates may enrol for two grades of written
examinations in the same session provided the
examinations are not scheduled at the same time.

Notice of written examination

A Notice of Written Examination for each candidate
is dispatched to the teacher/private entrant
approximately two weeks before the examination.
You will receive two notices in the case of Music
Craft and Musicianship exams that have an aural
and written component. Please ensure you check all
pages carefully and note the precise time(s), date(s)
and location(s) for each examination.
All notices must be given to the candidate to present
at the examination venue.
Teachers should ensure that their students:

attend the venue indicated on the Notice of

Written Examination

arrive at the examination venue at least 20

minutes before the scheduled commencement
time. Reading time (if applicable) will commence
10 minutes before the advertised start of the
examination

Theory is green

write their correct candidate number on the paper.

understand correct examination protocol and

complete their examination in silence out of
courtesy to other candidates, ie no humming,
singing, tapping etc.

Candidates whose first language is not English may

use a dictionary in written examinations, providing
that the dictionary is foreign language/English.
Candidates should advise the AMEB (NSW) office in
writing that they intend to use a dictionary when they
enrol, outlining their reasons for doing so. The AMEB
(NSW) will then provide the candidate with a letter of
authorisation that must be presented to the
examination supervisor prior to the commencement
of writing. The supervisor will check that the
dictionary falls within the guidelines and that it does
not include any other written material.
Before the scheduled commencement of all written
examinations (except the aural component of the
Musicianship and Music Craft examinations),
10 minutes reading time is allowed. No writing will
be permitted during this time. At the conclusion of
the aural Musicianship and aural Music Craft
examinations candidates will have 10 minutes
checking time during which writing is permitted.
Manuscript paper for rough working will be provided
for all aural and written examinations. The supervisor
will collect all unused working papers; no manuscript
paper may be taken from the room. Only the worked
paper (and any attached sheets) will be considered
for marking. Pencilled answers are only acceptable if
they are clearly legible.

Examinations will be held throughout the metropolitan

area in schools, colleges and community halls.
Teachers should indicate their preferred examination
area on the enrolment form. However, where a
nominated examination area is unavailable, or where
no preference of area is specified, candidates will be
directed to the nearest available venue.

28

2014 enrolment handbook

The Confirmation of Enrolment will indicate the

teachers preferred examination area. Please notify
the AMEB (NSW) immediately if this area is incorrect.
While every effort is made to accommodate
candidates in the preferred area, the capacity and
availability of venues may require alterations without
notice. Please check the venue carefully on the
Notice of Written Examination.
All Speech and Drama candidates may be directed to
one central Sydney venue.
The Aural and Written components for Music Craft
and Musicianship are held on different days and may
also be held at different venues. Please check your
notices carefully.

Examination areas Regional NSW

As more grades in each of the three written
syllabuses are made available as online examinations,
regional teachers may find online exams to be a far
more convenient option for their students. However, if
face-to-face examinations are preferred, a minimum
of 10 candidates per day is required in order for any
examination venue to be established. For this reason
teachers are advised that they should collaborate with
other teachers in their area and enter candidates for
the same session in order to ensure a local venue.
Teachers must be aware that the preferred area
nominated on the Confirmation of Enrolment may
vary from the venue finally allocated on the Notice of
Examination. Candidates in regional areas may be
required to travel to the nearest available venue.
However, in response to teacher feedback, the AMEB
(NSW) agrees that no candidate should travel more
than 125 kilometres (each way) from their teachers
studio to the examination venue on any one day.
Students sitting for Musicianship examinations with
Aural components should travel no more than 70
kilometres (each way) from their teachers studio to
the examination venue on each of the two days
involved. If a Musicianship candidate travels further
than 70 kilometres (each way) on one day, then the
other component of the examination will be held in
their teachers local centre. If scheduling has already
commenced, late enrollees may have to travel further
than the distances indicated above.

Written transfers
Traditional written examinations and
online written examinations
It is not possible under any circumstances to
transfer from a traditional written examination to
an online examination or from an online written
examination to a traditional written examination.

Issue of examination results and

certificates
Written examination results and certificates are issued
within eight weeks of the examination date. The
marked papers of all Theory of Music and Musicianship
candidates from Grades 1 to 3 are returned to the
teacher. Candidates for Grade 4 and above and all
candidates sitting for Music Craft examinations receive
a report from the assessor giving the marks awarded for
each section and any relevant comments. No Music
Craft papers will be returned to teachers. However,
teachers may come to the office to view Music Craft
papers only at a cost of $25 per paper. Arrangements
to view papers must be made in advance.

Reassessment of written examination

papers
If you believe an error has been made. AMEB (NSW)
must be notified within 12 weeks of the examination
date. A $50 fee must be submitted to arrange a
reassessment and this fee will only be processed in
the event that the re-marking of the paper results in
the same mark as the original, ie no examiner error or
calculation error has been established.
All papers from Grade 4 upwards with a result of 63
or 64 (excluding online examinations) will
automatically be reassessed by a second assessor.
The reviewed mark will be the mark recorded and the
reviewed report will be issued to the teacher. The
assessors decision is final and no correspondence
will be entered into regarding that decision.
