The Water & Environment (W&E) division of Atkins is concerned with the sustainable use of our land
and water resources. We provide professional technical expertise to local, national and global
markets across planning, master-planning, landscape and heritage, geotechnics and tunnelling,
land remediation and hydrogeology, waste management, water management and water
utilities, air quality, noise and acoustics, environmental and sustainability management.

1. Land & Development

What do we do?
The Land & Development division provides a range of multidisciplinary skills for land development
projects in the UK and overseas. We offer engineering and environmental solutions across a whole
host of market sectors including; urban development and regeneration; energy generation,
transmission and distribution; oil, gas and nuclear industries; heavy industries including cement, steel
and mining; defence and aerospace; water and waste management; airports, highways and rail
infrastructure

Land & Development delivers projects in three main market sectors:

Land Development enabling the development of land through infrastructure design, geoenvironmental engineering and contaminated land remediation; environmental impact
assessment and development of environmental mitigation design; bringing Brownfield and
Greenfield sites forward for redevelopment by taking projects through the planning/consenting
process to construction.
Energy and Waste environmental management and remediation for the Oil & Gas industry;
dealing with the legacy issues associated with energy generation including decommissioning
and environmental rehabilitation; permitting and consenting for power generation,
transmission and distribution; waste strategy and engineering services including Energy from
Waste; advisory services related to carbon management climate change.
Transportation environmental and engineering design for the rail, highways and aviation
sectors; specialist services in drainage design, air quality management, acoustics, noise &
vibration.

In leading on land and development projects, we have created an international capability to handle
liability and compliance issues for global corporate and financial institutions, much of which is centred
on land as an asset.

What are our 2014 Graduate Recruitment Requirements?


The Land & Development team are recruiting Graduates for Birmingham, Bristol, Epsom, Glasgow,
London and Warrington offices.
The opportunities would suit graduates who want to specialise in Geo-environmental Engineering,
Contaminated Land, Hydrogeology, Waste, Air Quality, Carbon and Greenhouse Gas Emissions,
Noise and Acoustics, and environmental impact assessment associated with pollution and industrial
emissions. These positions will ideally suit graduates who come from an Environmental Science,
Hydrogeology, Geology, Acoustics, Chemistry, Physics or related scientific degree discipline.

2. Environmental & Water Management


What do we do?
The Environmental and Water Management business supports our clients with any development or
activity that has a potential impact on or benefit to the environment; including ports and harbours,
power stations, coastal and river defences, dams & hydraulic structures and water resources.
We work for water companies, regulators, private industry, research bodies and a range of
international funding institutions to provide a wide range of services including:

Business and asset planning for water & waste companies and the Environment Agency;
Feasibility studies for water resource projects, dams and river/coastal defences;
Environmental impact assessments and environmental statements in support of project
development (including hydrology, hydrogeology, water quality, geomorphology and ecology);
Business cases for dams, river defences, ports and the like;
Capital programme management
Environmental and licence compliance
Technical and environmental due diligence for transactions in the water, waste, power and
utilities sectors;
Climate impacts and climate change assessments;
Floods forecasting and warning;
Water resource master plans;
Dams safety work; and
Land management.

What are our 2014 Graduate Recruitment Requirements?
Following significant success in securing forward work programmes our Strategy Assessment &
Management (SAM) team has graduate / post-graduate level vacancies in our Epsom office. The
SAM team operate at the interface between human activity and the water environment. They are
leaders in providing integrated and innovative, technical and management solutions for our greatest
water and environment challenges.
Candidates should hold or be expected to achieve a degree classification of 2.1 or above (or
equivalent) in the Environmental or Natural Sciences, Mathematics or Civil Engineering and
preferably have a relevant post-graduate qualification. You must be numerate, have an eye for detail
and enjoy solving challenging environmental problems.
The Rivers and Coastal team have vacancies in Bristol, Epsom and Warrington. We are ideally
looking for Graduates who have a Masters level degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering,
Geography or a related discipline, or Graduates who have gone on to achieve an MSc in a
Water/Environment related subject.
