3. Explain the benefits of team working using one of the scenarios below. [1.3]
Scenario A
At an advertising agency, the creative team is made up of employees with different skills and
experience. The people within the team come from different backgrounds and there is an
even mixture of men and women. Each team member knows their role and what is expected
of them but they are also able to cover for others when necessary. There is also a lot of
inter-team collaboration as team members share their own expertise and apply their skills
when needed.

Scenario B
After feedback from staff, a call centre has placed a greater emphasis on team building.
Every month there is an office fun day and frequent team bonding trips and days out. As a
result, staff often comment that they see their workmates not just as colleagues but friends
as well. Teams which participate most often in the team building activities routinely find that
customer feedback for their teams is the highest in the business and the company also does
just as well in employee satisfaction questionnaires.

Case Study
Clean4U is a car wash which specialises in cleaning large industrial vehicles. The car wash
is open six days a week, Monday to Saturday, washing up to as many as 40 large vehicles
per day. There are two main teams involved with the cleaning of the vehicles; Team A cleans
inside the vehicles and Team B cleans the outside of the vehicles. Each team is made up of
15 people, with a team leader responsible for each team. There is an overall operations
manager who oversees both teams. Currently Clean4U is experiencing some team related
difficulties.
In the past month Team A have taken on 3 new staff members. However, it seems that the
new members are struggling to adapt to the team. The 3 new recruits have joined Clean4U
from a competitor car wash and are used to doing things differently to the way Clean4U
operates. The new staff members do not seem to accept the team purpose and mistakes are
currently being made.
Team A isnt the only team with problems. In Team B there seems to be a difficulty
concerning the roles of team members. Those workers who have been at the company for a
long time are concerned that younger, newer members of staff arent doing enough work. In
fact, productivity has seen a 20% decline in the past 2 months.
This difficulty has led to further conflict within Team B. The relationships between older and
younger workers are strained, with team members having negative feelings towards each
other. It is important that tension between staff is eased and resolved so Clean4U can avoid
confrontation.
On top of internal team tension there seems to be a growing lack of communication between
teams. This is potentially very damaging for the company. The structure of the business
relies on each team knowing when they can clean their allocated parts of the vehicles.

Unit 3: Working in business teams
4. Read the case study below.
Case study
A software company creates computer games. Within the company there are many different
roles which relate to Belbins Team Role Theory. Some roles (Plant, Coordinator,
Implementer, and Completer) within the company are described below:

Plant: Mike Edgeton, 42 years old, is a Creative Director. He has acted as the brain
behind the companys longest standing game series. Since the company has
attempted to expand and grow, Mike has successfully created another popular, new
game series. The gaming market seemed desperate for a new adventure game and
Mikes newest project seems to have satisfied the market as well as his fellow team
mates, who hold him in the highest regard.
Coordinator: Grace Harvey, 34 years old, is a Development Director. Grace
oversees the companys creative teams, such as the software team and graphic
development team. Grace is the person responsible for assigning jobs to people on a
weekly basis. Recently many team members have expressed dissatisfaction with
Graces methods due to her over-delegating jobs and failing to take enough
responsibility herself.
Implementer: Ariana Singh, 44 years old, is a Materials manager. Ariana works
closely with Mike and is responsible for putting his ideas into practice. Ariana is the
person responsible for ensuring that targets are met within the team. When a game is
given a release date Ariana makes sure that deadlines are met. The first game in
Mikes new series of games was released on time this year thanks to Ariana.
Completer: Hector Chan, 25 years old, works across many teams in the business.
He is well known for being very skilful despite his young age. Hector applies the
finishing touches to a lot of the products the company creates. However, Hector is a
perfectionist and this has caused tension with other team mates, especially Ariana.
Hector can often take his perfectionism too far, endangering release dates set by the
company.

The company is releasing a new online game within the next few days. Mike, a popular
figure amongst fans of the game series, has recorded some personal web videos describing
to fans what they can expect from his new game. However, some staff think the release date
may have to be delayed because not all jobs have been completed. Ariana has only just
found this out and is angry with Grace who is responsible for jobs being assigned correctly.
Grace has left work early. Ariana has decided to work overtime to ensure that the release
date is met. Ariana is also aware that Hector is endangering the date being met by fussing
over small details that can be completed when the first update is available. However, Hector
ignores Ariana and refuses to listen to what she has to say.

The case study showed the contribution made by each role within the team (Belbins Team
Role Theory). Imagine yourself in the role of Monitor Evaluator. Review the teams overall
effectiveness in dealing with the difficulties faced in the case study. Complete the tables
below to show which two people are the most effective team members and which two are
the least effective. Explain your answers. [2.3]

2. Complete the table below by describing four of the personal qualities needed by a
team leader using examples from the scenario provided. [3.1]
Peter has been a team leader in the IT department of a small business for almost three
years. He is well liked by the people in his team as well as everyone else in the business. He
is always getting directly involved in activities like the 5-a-side football league and often
arranges charity events and dressing up days. He is always quick to feed information back to
his team about changes in the business and has an open door policy where he encourages
members of his team to come directly to him if they have any issues or concerns. On top of
this he has never been absent, is always on time and regularly stays behind outside of his
contracted hours to make sure all his tasks and commitments are completed to a high
standard.

Unit 3: Working in business teams
Scenario A
In the post room of a small business, the post team work in cramped conditions doing tasks
which most consider quite monotonous. The job is relatively well paid but staff rarely
socialise outside of work and do not have much exposure to the work carried out in the rest
of the business.

Scenario B
The technical support team in a call centre constantly complain about the outdated
equipment they have to use. Their phone system is often out of service and their computers
are nearly a decade old affecting their productivity. Also, certain members of the team are
paid significantly more even though they do effectively the same job.

Scenario C
A team of administration staff are all made up of people from different backgrounds. Some
are old, some are young whilst some have degrees and others do not. Some members of
the team have recently graduated from university but find the work unchallenging and can
occasionally miss deadlines. Staff who have been there longer have been on the same
contract since they started and are provided with little opportunities to progress.
