Computer Recycling Program


1999 Began as Official Chicago Program to provide
1 computer for every 5 students in Chicago Public and Catholic
Schools (K-12) and City Colleges of Chicago.
Required over 250,000 computers a year to meet this goal.
No budget to pay for that many computers
Recycled computers became the most cost-effective and
immediate solution to bridge Chicagos Digital Divide

Why Recycle Computers in the United States ?


In 2004 over 315 million computers became obsolete

In 2006 163,420 computers and TVs are obsolete each day

In the US computers have a useful life of only 3 years

Recycling 1,024 Tons of computers (~20,000 CPUs) saves

172,474 barrels of oil, 7.2 millions gallons of petro, 71,967 tons of CO2

Why Recycle Computers in the United States ?


Landfill disposal of 1,000 tons of computers requires 1 worker,

Recycling computer plastic, metal and chips requires 15 workers,


Repairing and refurbishing the same computers and installing in
schools, NGOs, and rural communities for distance learning
creates jobs for 200 workers. (1)
