Acknowledgement

We are greatly indebted to our Project Guide Mr. Anil Kumar Jha
for his continued support over the course of this Project. We
would like to express our gratitude to the T.A.s in the Lab for all
the help they enthusiastically extended to us.
Without their moral support and inspiration we would not have
been able to complete this task. At this juncture, we would like to
thank our Instructor-in-charge , Dr. V.K. Jain, for providing us an
excellent opportunity to experience real-world engineering.
Lastly, we would like to thank everyone in TA Lab who helped us
at any point while doing our project .

Certificate

This is to certify that the TA202A Mechanical Lab Project,

Platform Jack, is a complete and genuine work of Rishabh Sahu,
Akshay Chaturvedi, Aditya Sinha, Nilesh Sharma, Himanshu Rathee,
Vaibhav Yadav and Piyush Prashant.
The Project's idea is original and does not constitute to any sort of
plagiarism arising from previous works in TA202A Lab or any other
sources thereof.

Overview

Platform Jack is a very useful machine to lift very heavy objects using
small force. It consists of a handle which rotates a worm. The worm in
turn rotates the worm-wheel which is connected to a driving spur gear.
This spur gear rotates four other driven spur gears which have threading
on the inner side. The spur gears by their threading convert the rotational
motion to the lifting action which lifts the base plate.
The lifting force is very high in comparison to the force applied on the
handle due to added mechanical advantages of various components of
machine.

Functionality
Platform Jack is mainly designed to lift very heavy objects by just using
force of hand. It is designed in a way such that in process of converting
the rotational force given by hand to the lifting force for top plate, it adds
the mechanical advantage of various simple machines used.

Step:1

Worm and Worm-Wheel

The ratio between worm and worm-wheel is 20:1. Hence, for

20 rotations of worm (or handle), the worm-wheel rotates once.

Step:2

Spur Gears

As worm-wheel and driving spur gear are connected, there is

no change in force. Driving spur gear(with 60 teeth) rotates 4 driven
spur gear(with 20 teeth). So, for every rotation of driving spur gear
the driven spur gear rotates 3 times.
[Here, we deliberately decided to lose some mechanical
advantage because machine was starting to seem as really slow.]
Step:3

Screw Mechanism

Mechanical advantage of screw is added here. For every

rotation of driven spur gear, the screw translates by 2mm.

Future Modification and Uses

Platform Jack can be very useful in industries and places like construction
sites for lifting heavy objects as it provides a very large mechanical
advantage. Doing very minor changes will change this from just lifting
using a platform to lifting using cable without affecting its mechanical
advantage. It can also serve as a replacement for Hydraulic Jacks in places
where low maintenance is a priority.

Considering its future modification, one aspect, which is the strength, is

at top priority. The machine should be able to withstand the weight it is
required to lift smoothly. Another modification which will increase the
flexibility of machine can be the changeable radius of the handle. As the
mechanical advantage depends upon the radius of handle, it can be
changed by changing the latter giving the machine added flexibility over
relationship between speed and mechanical advantage.

Calculation of overall Mechanical Advantage-

Let the radius of handle be R.

To lift a load by 2mm (Output=2mm),
Handle has to be rotated 20/3 times.
Hence, Input= (2XXR)x20/3

Mechanical advantage = Input (in distance) /Output (in distance)

=(2XXR)x20/3 (in mm) /2
= 20xXR/3(in mm)
