Housing and Quality of Life

Housing can be considered as a fundamental human right and a prerequisite for autonomy,
independence, and health (United Nations,1948). The home environment is one of many
facets of quality of life outcomes included in the World Health Organizations quality of life
assessment instrument, WHOQOL (Group,1994), others being, e.g., health, relationships,
safety, independence, and participation. Housing is important in all ages, but particularly
among those spending the majority of their time within the home it becomes a central arena in
everyday life. (Malmgren, F., & Haak M ,2014 pp 2981-2983)

Changes in subjective quality of life among homeless adults who obtain housing: a
prospective examination
Multivariate analysis identified predictors of changes in quality of life before and after
departure . Results: This study has three main conclusions. First, the homeless who have
obtained independent housing had the highest positive and significant improvements in
satisfaction with the quality of life in general and satisfaction with housing, leisure and money.
Secondly , becoming staying was not a predictor of changes in perceived quality of life for the
homeless , or in their leisure satisfaction , clothing , food , and social life. Furthermore, a
positive change in satisfaction with housing was not associated with all types of outlets
homelessness ; only a movement in independent housing predicted such a change , but a
movement in housing depends not made. (Wolf, J., Burnam A, Koegel, P., Sullivan G., & S.
Morton ,2001, pp 391-398 )
Housing Characteristics and their Influence on Health-Related Quality of Life in
Persons Living with HIV in Ontario, Canada: Results from the Positive Spaces, Healthy
Places Study
Although lack of housing is linked with adverse health outcomes, little is known about the
impacts of the qualitative aspects of housing on health. This study examined the association

between structural elements of housing, housing affordability, housing satisfaction and healthrelated quality of life over a 1-year period. Participants were 509 individuals living with HIV in
Ontario, Canada. Regression analyses were conducted to examine relationships between
housing variables and physical and mental health-related quality of life. We found significant
cross-sectional associations between housing and neighborhood variablesincluding place
of residence, housing affordability, housing stability, and satisfaction with material, meaningful
and spatial dimensions of housingand both physical and mental health-related quality of
life. Our analyses also revealed longitudinal associations between housing and neighborhood
variables and health-related quality of life. Interventions that enhance housing affordability
and housing satisfaction may help improve health-related quality of life of people living with
HIV. Sean B., Rourke., Tsegaye B.,Ruthann T.,Saara Green., & and Behavior ,2012., pp 23612373,)
The Role of Housing Type and Housing Quality in Urban Children with AsthmaProperty
type associated with childhood asthma with the highest prevalence of asthma in
public housing (21.8%). Residents of all kinds of private households were less
likely to asthma than children living in public housing. After adjusting for
individual factors and demographic and economic community level, the
relationship between the type of housing and childhood asthma persisted, with
residents of private family dwellings with lower odds of current asthma compared
with residents public housing (odds ratio: 0.51; confidence interval of 95%, 0.22,
1.21). Factors associated with quality of housing explain some of the grouping of
asthma in public housing. For example, the majority (68.7%) of public housing
residents reported the presence of cockroaches, compared with 21% of residents
of private homes. Reported cockroaches, rats, and water leaks also independently
associated with current asthma. These findings suggest that differential exposure
and asthma risk by type of urban housing. Interventions to reduce these
disparities should consider several aspects of the home environment, especially
those not directly controlled by residents. Northridge, J., Ramirez,O., Stingone J., &
Claudio D., 2010 ., pp 211-224
Conduct disorder behaviors, childhood family instability, and childhood abuse as
predictors of severity of adult homelessness among American veterans
About one-third reported conduct disorder behaviors, over half reported family instability, and
40 % reported childhood abuse. Greater childhood problems were found in this sample
compared to published samples of non-homeless veterans. Conduct disorder behaviors,
family instability, and childhood abuse were each weakly associated with lifetime homeless
episodes. One year after enrollment in the HUD-VASH program, past conduct disorder
behaviors and family instability were not predictive of outcomes, except childhood abuse was

related to less social support and lower quality of life. Jack T., Robert A.,& Rosenheck,
2013,pp 477-486
Previous Homelessness as a Risk Factor for Recovery from Serious Mental Illnesses
Homelessness ( 1) always experimenting , and the amount of time spent homeless were
related to higher levels of psychiatric disorders , (2 ) always experiencing homelessness was
related to higher levels of consumption reported alcohol , and (3 ) total amount of time spent
homeless was associated with lower perceived recovery from mental illness . These findings
suggest that homelessness can contribute to psychosocial vulnerability to negative mental
health outcomes . Future research examining the concept of risk and vulnerability as a result
of homelessness are in order. Castellow, J., Bret Kloos., & Greg Townley, 2015
Diversity at the Margins: The Interconnections Between Homelessness, Sex Work,
Mental Health, and Substance Use in the Lives of Sexual Minority Homeless Young
People
The unique challenges facing young sexual minorities without home have
received increasing attention in recent years. In this chapter the research
surrounding LGBTQ youth in the street with a particular focus on the
interconnections between homelessness , sex work , drug use and mental health
problems is reviewed . Sexual minority youth homelessness is consistently found
to have higher rates of mental health problems , drug use , sexual health risk and
victimization than their heterosexual. Tyler Frederick (2013)

The Developmental Trajectories of Infants and Young Children Experiencing

Homelessness
Children under age six are disproportionately more likely than their peers to experience
homelessness. Recent advances in developmental science indicate that these are among the
most critical years developmentally. This chapter explores the cognitive, social-emotional, and
physical developmental paths of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers who have experienced
homelessness. Additionally, the prenatal experiences of these children and recommendations
for intervention and future research are also provided.

Supporting Families Experiencing Homelessness
.Homelessness is a devastating experience that can significantly affect the health
and well-being of adults and children. Often these families have experienced a
permanent trauma in the form of child abuse and neglect, domestic violence and
violence in the community, and the trauma associated with losing your home.
Traumatic experiences affect how children and adults think , feel, behave and
relate to others, and trauma unrecognized and unaddressed can have potentially
devastating consequences for development throughout life .

Trauma, Adversity, and ParentChild Relationships Among Young Children
Experiencing Homelessness
When young children are faced with overwhelming for safety or security without
countering influences threats , impacts can disrupt development through
performance levels with long-term consequences for the behavior , physiology,
emotion regulation , cognitive processes , social relationships and health
( Shonkoff et al 2009 ; . Van der Kolk 2003). However , many children who suffer
adversity demonstrate significant resistance , which works well despite the risks
(Rutter 2013).
