Type V Hydraulic Fluid Certification

Rodrigo de Macedo

Embraer has taken the decision not to pursue

to the approval of Type V Hydraulic Fluid for the
E-Jets fleet.
The main reason is the high cost and the high demand
of engineering resources involved in, only for compatibility verification between the new fluid and the aircraft current components. There are no guarantees
that extensive product modification would not be necessary. This analysis certainly would require dedicated
tests for each of the components from the various suppliers involved, once an eventual incompatibility could
cause degradation or any other unexpected behavior,
impairing the normal operation of the aircraft systems.
Whereas there is no indication that the current type
of fluid used in the E-Jets will be discontinued and
no relevant performance improvement has being evidenced, Embraer has decided not to pursue to the
approval of Type V Hydraulic Fluid for the E-Jets fleet
now.
This question may be resumed if the Type IV Hydraulic
fluid goes into an obsolescence process.

Load 25.3 and 25.4

New EPIC Load, a great opportunity to update

the fleet for new functionalities

EPIC LOAD
A new EPIC Load, gives a great opportunity to
update the fleet, with new functionalities, or activate them. From the operational standpoint, fixes
and improvements contribute to minimize operational impacts and crew workload.
The airline maintenance crew is also the focus of a
load release since fixes and improvements contribute to a more effective troubleshooting, minimizing
workload, aircraft downtime and parts availability.
The E-Jets Avionics System has a highly integrated
architecture, which consists of cockpit controls and
displays, communication systems, sensors and actuators.
Many control functions which were usually hosted in
single line replaceable units (LRUs) in previous generation architectures are currently integrated into the

and EMBRAER 190 aircraft families.

FOCUS ON

Changes introduced by Load 25 made possible the

inclusion of the FLT CTRL FAULT EICAS message on
the Master Minimum Equipment List MMEL. After
the MMEL approval, for aircraft with Primus EPIC
Load 25.4, it will be possible to dispatch it with FLT
CTRL FAULT displayed (repair interval is within 2
calendar days). This MMEL revision will improve the
aircraft dispatch reliability by significantly reducing flight delays and cancellations due to FLT CTRL
FAULT.
It is important to bring to your attention that Load
25 must be installed before upgrading the current E170/175 HS-ACE to new PN 415300-1005 (SB
170-27-0046). HS-ACE is one of the main offenders
for FLT CTRL NO DISPATCH and new HS-ACE PN
415300-1005 is aimed at reducing over 60% of flight
interruptions (FCND) due to HS-ACE.
Still, Epic Load 25.4 (and also 25.3) implements a
modification that increases the robustness of the
Aileron Primary and Secondary Input Voltage Monitors, contributing to the decrease of FLT CTRL NO
DISPATCH messages.
Moreover, before Load 25.4, the procedures called
Circling Approach (characterized by the procedures
that do not have the runway defined on the charts)
were inhibited, and with this Load, the subjected procedures will be available, allowing pilots to
choose flying the instrument part of this kind of procedure using the FMS.

EPIC Load 25.3

Primus Epic Load 25.3 (for Pentium II) brings all the
fixes, improvements and new functionalities implemented on Load 25.1.0.1, Load 25.2 and 25.4, except
for the CPDLC that is not compatible with the Pentium II modules.
One of the more relevant items, considering pilots
point of view, is the improvement on the VNAV logic during all lateral transitions or altitude constraints
modifications when in PTH mode, avoiding incorrect
path capture during FMS recalculations.
For fleets with Pentium II configuration, the changing from Load 21.4 or 23.1 to 25.3 is the terminating
action for the following Operational Bulletins:

170-006/09: FMS position anomaly;

170-001/10: FMS misbehavior upon runway change
when no arrival or approach procedure is selected;
170-004/10: Anticipated top of descent when two
AT altitude constraints are at the same altitude/
flight level;
170-001/11: FMS anomaly in terminal area procedures, using heading legs displayed as FLY XXX OR

that there was no real loss of pressure, but rather an

indication issue, mostly associated with a faulty oil
pressure transmitter (OPT). As per the E-Jets News
Edition 77 (May, 2013), GE has already released SBs
(GE SB 77-0005 for CF34-10E and GE SB 77-0007 for
CF34-8E), to mitigate these events by introducing improved OPTs (P/N 4120T16P02), more robust to elevated temperatures.
In addition to that, EMBRAER and GE are also working on the re-introduction / re-activation of the low
oil pressure switch (LOPS) as a redundancy to the
OPT, thus increasing the ability of the system to detect indication-related faults. Version 25.3 EPIC Load
Software brings logic provisions for the LOPS signal
to be interpreted by the aircraft when the complete
system is installed.

170-002/13: FMS turn misbehavior due to incorrect

leg sequencing.

The incorporation of this EPIC Load Software is independent from the re-activation of the LOPS. The
latter will only be activated if the switch / harnesses
are installed, FADEC Software 8Ev5.60 / 10Ev5.50 is
incorporated and the FADEC ECP is reprogrammed
(which are expected to be released to the field in the
2Q/2014).

Provision for improvement in the Oil Pressure Indication System (Figure 3) is also present in the new
Load. In the past, EMBRAER received reports of commanded engine in-flight shutdown events in the field
associated with a false indication of engine oil low
pressure. In these cases, troubleshooting showed

Regarding the FADEC Fan Cooling System for the

EMBRAER 190/195 aircraft, as part of the on-going
actions to increase the CF34-10E FADEC reliability in
the field, Embraer and GE are developing an active

with the root cause investigation, which revealed that

the FADEC reliability is primarily driven by, the: a) Delta Temperature between on-ground and in-flight operation and b) Maximum temperature on the ground.
Version 25.3 EPIC Load Software brings the logic provisions necessary for the Fan Cooling System to work.
When installed together with other components of
the system (Fan Hardware, Harnesses, FADEC Software 10Ev5.50, SPDA Software Block 12), planned to
be released in the 2Q/2014, it will allow the system
to be activated. It is important to highlight that the
incorporation of this EPIC Load Software is independent from the FADEC Fan Cooling System. The latter
will only be activated if the complete system is installed and the FADEC ECP is reprogrammed.
