ancient sport, the ball game.
Maestro: Buenos das jvenes, hoy aprenderemos a cerca de los deportes
antiguos, el juego de pelota.

Jorge: Whats that teacher? Is it like soccer or football?

The Ball Game

Long time ago the Mesoamerican civilizations
used to play the Ball Game or Juego de Pelota
in Spanish. It was a sport of life and death. The
Ball Game was usually played by two teams in a
court with a rubber ball that weighed more than
a kilo and was about the size of a mans head.
About the rules, historians think the players
could only touch the ball with their hips, elbows
and knees but not with their hands or feet. The
players had to get the ball through a stone ring
on the wall until the first team scored a point.
The captain or some of the players of the losing
team used to be sacrificed. The Mesoamerican
civilizations believed that human sacrifice
pleased their goods.

Hace mucho tiempo las civilizaciones mesoamericanas solan jugar el juego de pelota.
Era un deporte de vida y muerte. El juego de pelota era usualmente jugado por dos
equipos en una cancha con una pelota de goma que pesaba ms de un kilo y era del
tamao de la cabeza de un hombre. Respecto a las reglas, los historiadores piensan que
los jugadores podan slo tocar el baln con sus caderas, codos, y rodillas; pero no con
sus manos o pies. Los jugadores tenan que pasar el baln a travs de un anillo de piedra
en la pared hasta que el primer equipo anotara el punto.
El capitn o alguno de los jugadores del equipo perdedor solan ser sacrificados. Las
civilizaciones mesoamericanas crean que el sacrificio humano agradaba a sus dioses.
