1. INTRODUCTION
The American Concrete Institute (ACI) defines mass concrete as: any volume of concrete with
dimensions large enough to require that measures be taken to cope with the generation of heat from
hydration of the cement and attendant volume change to minimize cracking (ACI 207.1R-05). However,
for simplicity, all concrete structure of which the smallest dimension is greater than 800 mm is
considered to be mass concrete.
This document covers the methods and extra precautions that may be required for any volume of mass
concrete. The precautions before, during and after the pouring are explained.
The only difference between Normal concrete and Mass concrete is the insulation and the installation
/ monitoring of thermocouples to control the Heat Of Hydration. All other aspects as pouring, curing,
removal of formwork are the same for both normal and mass concrete.

2. SCOPE
The preparation of formwork and reinforcement (including cutting and bending), as well as the pouring of
the concrete is beyond the scope of this document, except for the precautions required for the control of
excessive Heat of Hydration.
Some considerations for thick blocks (d > 0.6-m), like the verification of method by trials and the use of
thermocouples, are also discussed in this document.
The form work of mass concrete shall be insulated & thermocouples be installed. As soon as possible
after completion of the pouring the top surface of the fresh concrete shall also be insulated.
The repair of cracks and honeycombing is also beyond the scope of this document.

3. HSSE
All works shall be in compliance with the State of Qatar laws and regulations, Ras Laffan Industrial City
and international standards/codes, and Company and Contractor requirements and instructions.
All personnel will go through Gama, Linde and Company Safety Induction courses as well as other
trainings as identified by their supervisor. For details, reference is made to GTL-GM-001-A-5635.
A Job Safety Analysis (JSA) specific for this work including a Risk Assessment, is prepared as per
Gama procedure GTL-GM-001-A-5626 and is attached herein. Such JSA addresses the hazards
associated with each task within the scope of this Method Statement and introduces the controls that will
be implemented to reduce the associated risks to acceptable levels. The JSA will be used by the Site
Supervisor as the basis of his TSTI / TSTO and Toolbox Talks.
All personnel will have PPE required for their specific tasks in addition to the minimum PPE (coveralls,
safety goggles, safety shoes, high-visibility vests, gloves) at site at all times as required.
In the event of a release, fire or explosion, employees will secure their area and evacuate to the nearest
muster point. Once all employees are evacuated the supervisor will conduct a headcount to verify all
employees are out of harms way. The supervision will report this to Contractor. Emergency Contact
numbers for Company, Contractor and Gama will be posted onsite.
All vehicles and equipment used for the subject work will be inspected and certified as required.

7. MEASURING INSTRUMENTS
K Type Thermocouple-ETI Thermometer

8. INSTALLATION REQUIREMENT & CRITERIA

In T.13, 376.358 Rev G (Amendment / Supplement to DEP 34.19.20.31) paragraph 7.4 is specified:
A minimum of 2 thermocouples shall be placed where the maximum temperature is expected, one as
back-up in case of failure or damage. A minimum of 6 thermocouples shall be installed around the
edges, generally at half-depth points and top and bottom surfaces. At least one thermocouple shall be
installed at an upper corner. For large pours where plan dimensions exceed 10 meter, groups of two
centrally placed and six peripheral thermocouples shall be repeated at 5 meter intervals along the
concrete element.
In DEP 34.19.20.31 paragraph 7.4 specified:
The heat of hydration shall not cause a temperature differential between the interior of the concrete and
any outside face greater than 15 degree C.
The insulation shall routinely be done with 5 cm polystyrene. The insulated formwork and the insulation
on top of the concrete shall not be removed until the temperature differential between the core and
ambient is 15 degrees C (refer to paragraph 3.26, point 9.9 of T-13.376.358). The temperature
monitoring can also stop at this point.
An NCR shall be raised immediately is the temperature differential has exceed the project specified 15
degree C. In this situation an RFI shall be submitted to Company for a common inspection of the
concrete (as soon as possible after the 10 days curing period) to assess a possible adverse effect on
the concrete due to the higher than 15 degree C temperature differential.
Further, Company and Contractor shall discuss and agree the measures to be taken (e.g. thicker
insulation, ordering fresh concrete with a lower temperature, etc.), to mitigate re-occurrence and
adverse effects.

9. MEASURING HEAT OF HYDRATION

The thermocouple will be K type placed on the rebar at 50 mm, below/above surface and centre as
stated above. No thermocouples & their wires shall be placed inside the concrete cover area of 50mm.
The temperature reading will be taken using digital thermometer. The model number of the thermometer
is ETI capable of measuring temperature between -30C to 300 C. The heat of hydration will be
measured at the interval of;
