CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND
1.1

Introduction
Nigeria or Federal Republic of Nigeria is bordered by Niger in the north,

in eastern Cameroon and Chad, Benin to the west and the Gulf of Guinea/
Atlantic Ocean to the south. Nigeria also has a tropical climate with high
rainfall and tropical rain forest large enough. The population is about 150
billion in 2011 according to the WHO with population growth of 2.1% per
year. Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and ranks 8 th in the
world.
Gross Domestic Product of Nigeria is around U.S.$ 341.1 billion with
around U.S.$ 2,300 per capita and has sequence 33 rd in the world. Although
70% are below the poverty line, Nigeria has a large enough of potential
market as it has large population with purchasing power that has continued
to increase in line with economic growth.
Nigeria is the largest oil producer in Africa and number 15 in the world.
Besides

oil;

food,

polypropylene,

medicines,

detergents

and

soaps,

incandescent, other chemical products, and also batik are industrial products
of Nigeria.
Batik is the art of dyeing cloth using wax barrier. It is one of the ancient
art form. In Nigeria batik technique known by Yoruba tribe long time ago.
Nigeria batik is not the same as batik Indonesia. Indonesia batik design more
diverse and using a more refined technique. Nigeria batik still has no identity
and characteristics.
Besides that, batik can be categorized as a creative industry, which is
able to increase revenue generation, promoting cultural development,
reduce economic dependence on basic commodities, creating jobs and
investment opportunities, providing new economic opportunities for youth,
cashing in women's contribution to the economy and society.
Base on the above description, Centre for Handicraft and Batik (CHB)
conducting research and development of handicrafts and batik under the

Ministry of Industry wanted to cooperate in developing batik in Nigeria. For


your information, CHB gives technical service to middle and small industry
(SMEs) in handicraft and batik industry. CHB also has some duties and
function,

to

carry

out

research

activity,

development,

cooperation,

standardization, certification, calibration and competencies development in


handicraft technology. CHB has handicraft laboratory that be completed by
equipments and experts. CHB has many experiences to held both of national
and international training.
1.2

. Title
Training on Technology Proces And Design Batik For Nigeria.

1.3

. Purpose

The purpose of the training are:


a) To increase the quality of cooperation between Indonesia and Nigeria
b) To share Indonesian competence in batik technology
c) To support Nigeria economic growth with give knowledge of batik as
alternative industries to increase revenue.
1.4

. Expected Output
Each participant country is expected to have the knowledge and new

skills on technologi process and design batik for identity of their country and
can use batik as alternative industries.
1.5

. Organization of the training


The organizing commite comprises the Clomobo Plan Secretariat and

the Government of the Republic of Indonesia. The government of the


Republic of Indonesia designates Centre for Handicraft and Batik (CHB) as
the implementing agency of the training.

CHAPTER II
TRAINING DESIGN
The training entitled Training on Technology Proces And Design Batik
For Nigeria will be held for 9 days in Centre for Handicraft and Batik, 7 th
Kusumanegara street, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
The training is a combination between theory (20%) and practice
(80%) in CHB include field trip at Small and Medium Enterpreunerships
(SMEs) of batik.
2.1 Theory
Theory is designed to share with participants the orientation about the
batik. CHB facilitators will explain everything about raw material, main and
auxiliary equipment, staining , planning design, design and wide motif, batik

technique write / tasting, immersion/ coloring, exposition and finishing for


making the batik.
2.2 Practice
Most of the time of training will be spent on practice. It is very useful to
grow the skills in making batik.
2.3 Field Study
In this session, participants will be invited to follow a visit at malam
and dye batik producers, as well as the participants have the opportunity for
observation and discussion with batik entrepreneurs directly.
2.4 Evaluation
The last session of the training is evaluating. In this session participant
exhibits the product that is made by them during the training. After that they
be able to comment the product from the others so there is a discussion.

2.5. Other Relevant Activities


There will be four other relevant activities cunducted during the
training, these are:
a) Joint Administrative Briefing
Joint Administrative Briefing will be presented by official of CHB and
official of Bureau for International Technical Cooperation, Ministry of State
Secretariat. Within the Administrative Briefing, all participants will be
briefed

shortly

on

the

information

related

to

the

training

and

administrative matters such as the sequence of the training, field and


cultural orientation, DSA, hotel, food, etc.
b) Opening Ceremony
The session of this opening ceremony consecutively is the opening report
providing of the whole overview of how this training will be performed by
the Head of CHB. This ceremony eill be attended by facilitators and senior
official of CHB. At the end of the opening ceremony seesion participants
will have the chance to have group pictures with all the officials before
return to the class session.
c) Closing Session
The session for this closing ceremony in consecutive starting with the
closing report which consists of the whole activities perform during the
training, evaluation on trainers and the facilities, will be delivered by the
Head of CHB and will be followed by the closing speech given by
Representative from Bureau for International Technical Cooperation,
Ministry of State Secretariat.
As the sign of appreciation to the participants during the training
programs, the implementing agency will present the certificate and

simple equipments to have training at home for each participant followed


by congratulations from the officials.
