One of the most important tasks that you will need to learn when using a computer is file
management. If you organize your files (electronic documents), you will be able to find
your documents much easier. In order to do this task, you will need to organize ideas
ahead of time. For the purposes of this lesson, we have done some initial planning for
you.

Bert Brains is a new student at MBJHS this fall; his user name on the computer network
is his district number (the number he uses to punch in to get his lunch). There is a folder
that has his user name on it located on a network server (a computer with large amount of
memory to store files for a huge number of people). Bert’s user name is 300123.

The first task that Bert needs to do is to logon on to the network. After he logs on to the
network, the first thing that he needs to do is to double click the icon called My Computer
on the Desktop. Once window opens he notes many icons that have different names.
Since he is a student at MBJHS, he double clicks the icon that says Student on ‘sirius’
(H:). Once again much to his dismay (he hasn’t used computers much) a new window
opens to hundreds of folders. He was told that the easiest way to locate his folder is to
single click any file in the open window; next he was told to type his user name (300123).
When you do this, it is best to type the numbers in at a consistent rate using the 10
keypad. Speed is not the most important factor; a consistent rate is the most important.
Once Bert’s folder (computer geeks call them directories) is highlighted, he double
clicked it to open it. There was nothing in the folder! Bert’s task now is to organize this
folder with his important assignments. Before Bert does this, he needs to pull out his
schedule to see what he is taking this semester. His schedule is the following:
Period Class Name
1 Math
2 Science
3 Literature
4 Geography
5 Language Arts
6 Choir
7 Applied Math
8 PE

Your classes are probably different but the process of organizing your folder will be
similar. Here are the steps for making folders:
• Right click the white area in your folder
• Select the word New, followed by Folder
• The highlighted blue area will have the words New Folder-Bert typed 01
Math for the folder for his 1st period math class- For yours, you will type
01, but the class name may be different
• Bert and you will need to do this for each of your classes. Don’t forget to
put the zero in front of the digits 1- 8
• Now make a new folder called practice.

• Once these 9 folders are made, show your teacher that you have
accomplished the task. Have your teacher initial below to demonstrate that
you have accomplished the task of creating your file management system.
• Now the challenge for you is when you make a new file to put the
document in the appropriate folder. Easier said than done. If you do this,
you will be able to find your ‘stuff’ without any problems. Also, you will
be more organized on your computer than 90% of your teachers and other
adults.
• STOP AT THIS POINT AND HAVE YOUR TEACHER COME OVER
TO YOUR COMPUTER.
• Show your teacher the folders that you created.
• Move the Practice folder into your first period class folder.
• Delete the practice folder.
• Demonstrate how to use up folder icon to get back to your user folder.
• Teacher Initials ________________
