ns1- Dual burden refers to the women doing the household work and also taking on paid

employment . The husband does not even assist her in the household chores .
Ans 2- The new man is said to be more caring and helpful around the house. Such As Hhe
helps his wife and in equally shares ring house- hold tasks . The are joint conjugal roles.
The new man also treats the wife as an equal gender such as he is not violent as the other men
. He does not physically and mentally abuse his wife , avoids domestic violence . The new
man does not follow patriarchal values
Ans 3- There are many theories put forward by feminist who argue that the family system is
nothing but a system of exploitation of women .
Radical feminist argue that the family system is where the patriarchal system stems from ,
the male dominance over women . The man has the hold over all the power relations in the
family , from the finances to decision making the all the important decisions in the family .
This way the women is always placed placed under subordinatione in the social relations.
and is discriminated against . The feeling of being discriminated all the time leads to a very
stress full life for the women and according to social trends only 29% of women who divorce
regret it and 59% of men who are divorcees believe they should have still stayed married.
Moreover, women and children are also subject to domestic violence . So physically and
mentally being abused from their own family members proves it is not a pretty safe place to
be. Dobash and Dobash found that after the most common form of violence which is between
2 unrelated men was assault on wife. And it has been noted that merely 2% of all such crimes
are reported to the police. On average, 42% of female murder victims are killed by current or
former partners (Criminal Statistics 2001). In the UK, an average of 2 women die per week
due to domestic abuse . In this respect , women fear their actions both in the private and the
public sphere of lives according to studies.
This is also the case with children , NSPCC in 2000 found that 10% of children suffered
serious abuse or neglect at home caused by their natural parents. While in 2005 the teen
magazine Sugar in association with the NSPCC found 15% of teenage girls were hit by their
parents.
The elderly also have to fear for their lives as they start to become more dependant on their
family members for personal needs and aren't even able to earn a living , as the family
members do not have much patience to tolerate them very much . In tamil nadu , kerala ,india
there is a culture of murdering the elderly when the stratstart to become a burden a practice
called "thalaikathloon".
Edmund leach was not a sociologist but an anthropologist but as sociology borrows a
little from every one it could be useful to bring his study in light .according to him that the
industriallization which has made the family isolated socially and has placed great unbearable
emotional striansstrain on it . When the expecationsexpectations are not fullfiled from the
relationships it creates great confict and stressful strains in the family which may lead to
divorce as well . Affecting every one in it .
Ans4- Patriarchy refers to male dominance over women .the family life is the private sphere
of life connected to people through blood, kinship and marriage ties .fuctionalist have a
happy view ofthe society where as the feminist find its in favour of men and nothing else.
Feminist argue that family is a patriatchal system . Where the man dominates , discriminates
and subordinates the women . The radical feminist views are explained in qns3 . They belive
that if the pataraichal system was to be overthrown then the family system would be the first
to go.
Male dominance is shown in varous ways. For exampe in the form of domestic violence . It
can also be seen in the economical sphere of life where when marriage ,means and end to
career and full time job but only for the women and not the man . As Eelston studied showed

that in a house where both both partners were full time doctors it was the women who still did
majority of the shopping , cooking and cleaning. The man only did the maintenace work .this
shows tahtthat women was responsible for mistmost of the daily routines work but the man
only needed to do the repair which usually arises twice a month or is given to the repair shops
many times. Moreover, it was 80% of the time that the women took off from work when the
children fell sick . This shows that it is not the job which is seen as inferior but the sex of the
women. Although there arent any real inferorities in it but a socially constructed reality .
The functionalist claim that the family is benefitial to all the members of the family .
And that it was very natural for the women to take on the expressive role and the man to take
on the instrumental role . However studies show that the women dislike doing the household
work all the time and are still forced to do it .
Moreover, it wasnt untill Aann Ooakely , a well quoted feminist who regarded the
womens daily labour as work . As she says Women daily chores arent even regarded as work
as they arent rewarded by wages , by entering into a marriage far from being given equal
rights the women is turned in to an unpaid slave .So this shows that women are seen as
useless in the home even though of they do much of the work .
However , wilmott and young see a march towards joint conjugal roles. Where the husband
equally shares out the tasks with the women. But researches conducted to test their claim
found them very much lacking in evidence. In a study be elsa and kate ferri of young couples
women did all the house work and also took on paid employment but their husbands dont
even take care of the children . Even though if they were unemployed at the time . This
shows the dual burden on the women .
According to Carolyn Volger , who did a study on the financial arrangements of the family
she found that only in20% of the households were the arrangments shared and the rest were
all in favor of men .
So all in all , the patriarchal syste, still persist on the family even though with little
considerations made form the fuctionalists . It is mostly evident from the fact that the
Feminism perspective still lives and is not seen to die out not even the far future.
