Software development is team work, as are the programming of a robot, the development of communications
systems, the implementation of a project, and the management of a group of researchers. During the studies,
students participate in assignments as team members.
In the Masters thesis project, collaboration with companies offers students both professional experience and
contacts. The programme encourages students to apply
their imagination to problem solving, providing new viewpoints, and offering insights. The graduates are experts in
information and communication technology (ICT), but they
may also have a basic knowledge of business.
Students of Software Engineering will obtain expertise in
software development, its processes, methods, and tools.
Career prospects
Graduates find employment in the design, development,
and maintenance of information processing systems,
software, information systems, communications
software and services, product development and
consulting. Professional duties may include software
and systems analysis and design, participation in

LUT Alumnus
My wife came with me from Iran, and now we also have a baby girl. We like the
tranquillity and unpolluted air of Lappeenranta, as we come from Teheran.
Lappeenranta offers full Internet access everywhere, clean water, electricity and a
variety of shops. Everything you need is here. That is why I plan to complete my doctoral
degree at LUT and will try to find a job from a Nordic country in the future.
Knowledge is power
- Sir Francis Bacon
We at the Department of Software Engineering and Information Management are
proud of our internationally accredited Masters Programme in Computer Science.
We maintain our teaching skills by participating in pedagogic training and teaching
seminars and utilise the latest teaching methods in our courses rather than just tell
you what can be found in books. Through close collaboration with industry we can
bring in interesting guest lecturers and offer industry-driven courses. The cutting
edge knowledge gained from research projects is incorporated into our courses and
provided to our students.

Programme in Computer Science
Modern society relies on software that runs everything from simple machines to
huge distributed data systems. At LUT, you study the latest technologies and software
development methods that are used to enhance our everyday lives. Our Masters
Programme is designed to provide the essential knowledge on software development
and the platforms for which the software is developed. The studies can be planned
to fit individual interests through elective studies. Therefore, it is possible to include
studies in business technology and administration in a computer science degree.
Working with students from a variety of backgrounds creates a cross-cultural and
innovative learning environment where you can learn team work and social skills
needed in the professional world after graduation. Learning comes through sharing
knowledge and ideas. With that in mind, I welcome you to learn not from us, but with us.
