ARE YOU READY TO CREATE THE FUTURE

OF COMPUTER SCIENCE?

Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT), Finland, welcomes students worldwide to study

in the Masters Programme in Computer Science, M.Sc. (Tech.). The aim of the programme is to
prepare students both professionally and academically for the areas of computer science which
offer extensive career opportunities. The programme also provides students with the readiness
to undertake postgraduate studies in computer science. Graduates will be equipped to challenge
the rapidly changing world of ICT through their capability to maintain a high level of expertise and
knowledge. The Masters Programme offers the major subject of Software Engineering.

Learning outcomes
Software development is team work, as are the programming of a robot, the development of communications
systems, the implementation of a project, and the management of a group of researchers. During the studies,
students participate in assignments as team members.
In the Masters thesis project, collaboration with companies offers students both professional experience and
contacts. The programme encourages students to apply
their imagination to problem solving, providing new viewpoints, and offering insights. The graduates are experts in
information and communication technology (ICT), but they
may also have a basic knowledge of business.
Students of Software Engineering will obtain expertise in
software development, its processes, methods, and tools.

A practical approach combined with theoretical knowledge

enables real life implementation of high quality solutions.
Graduates from Software Engineering are able to apply
modern design techniques and methods in daily software
engineering. They are able to participate in software
projects as experts in their specialisation area. Graduates
are able to design, model and implement applications
and services for various environments. Moreover, they
are able to recognise problems in software development
and improve processes from the technical, project
management, and organisational viewpoints.

Career prospects
Graduates find employment in the design, development,
and maintenance of information processing systems,
software, information systems, communications
software and services, product development and
consulting. Professional duties may include software
and systems analysis and design, participation in

software development projects, software research

and product development. Graduates may also occupy
positions in project planning and management in ICT
companies, research and education, or as software
architects, programming experts and software product
managers.

I was very interested in

the subjects LUT offered.
Someone could ask, why the north? There is only one answer because the educational
system is so good in the Nordic countries and especially in Finland. Before I came
here, I tried to find some of my fellow countrymen at LUT. One professor from Iran was
working here with his wife and unreservedly told me good things about LUT. Of course,
I was also very interested in the courses LUT offered, such as communication software,
object-oriented programming and software architecture.
LUT provides good facilities for studying, and the IT facilities are excellent.
The professors know a great deal about their subject, and the studies have been
planned very well. In addition, the code camp course which the department organises is
first-rate. The idea is to design a software programme together with your classmates.
You are with them 24 hours a day for four days, and also go to the sauna together. I had
never experienced anything like that before it was very interesting for me.

My wife came with me from Iran, and now we also have a baby girl. We like the
tranquillity and unpolluted air of Lappeenranta, as we come from Teheran.
Lappeenranta offers full Internet access everywhere, clean water, electricity and a
variety of shops. Everything you need is here. That is why I plan to complete my doctoral
degree at LUT and will try to find a job from a Nordic country in the future.

Knowledge is power
- Sir Francis Bacon
We at the Department of Software Engineering and Information Management are
proud of our internationally accredited Masters Programme in Computer Science.
We maintain our teaching skills by participating in pedagogic training and teaching
seminars and utilise the latest teaching methods in our courses rather than just tell
you what can be found in books. Through close collaboration with industry we can
bring in interesting guest lecturers and offer industry-driven courses. The cutting
edge knowledge gained from research projects is incorporated into our courses and
provided to our students.

Uolevi Nikula
Associate Professor, academic
director of the Masters
Programme in Computer Science

Modern society relies on software that runs everything from simple machines to
huge distributed data systems. At LUT, you study the latest technologies and software
development methods that are used to enhance our everyday lives. Our Masters
Programme is designed to provide the essential knowledge on software development
and the platforms for which the software is developed. The studies can be planned
to fit individual interests through elective studies. Therefore, it is possible to include
studies in business technology and administration in a computer science degree.
Working with students from a variety of backgrounds creates a cross-cultural and
innovative learning environment where you can learn team work and social skills
needed in the professional world after graduation. Learning comes through sharing
knowledge and ideas. With that in mind, I welcome you to learn not from us, but with us.
