four basic skills in learning English that should be mastered by students. They are
listening, speaking, reading, and writing.Speaking is also considered as the most difficult and
challenging skill to be mastered (Brown, 1994). Therefore, students should be able to speak
fluently and understand oral communication. According Clark & Clark as quoted by Sinaga
(2010:7) speaking is the form of oral language that is inevitably used to communicate ideas
and feelings.Speaking generate the oral and verbal process undergone totally natural. So
speaking is not only pronouncing or saying something, but also there are any ideas, message,
or feeling which is contained there. Many people feel speaking in a new language is harder
than listening, reading, and writing for two reasons. First, speaking happens automatically
and spontaneously. Second, when speaking, it is not allowed to edit or revise what to say.
Every part of activity in English as a second language always involves the two text model
whether it is spoken text or written text. However, according to Swales as quote by Hyland
(2002:17) states that a genre as a comparison a class of communicative events, the numbers
of which share some set of communicative purposes. As an effective consideration language
in use, it is based on the text type called genre.The genre of narrating or narrative is one of the
most commonly text type, though least understood of all the genres. Because narrative has
been and continues to be such a popular genre, there is a belief that it is a genre that students
pick up and understand naturally.
Narrative is a text type contains the problematic problems in order to amuse, entertain,
or even give a good lesson for readers or listeners. Knapp and Watkins (2005) assume that the
structure of narrative is orientation, complication, and resolution. Orientation is the starting
point of the narrative which deals with the introduction of the character, location, and time
conventionally. The sequence of events or complication contain problematic that leads to
conflict. Then resolution expresses the problem solving of the conflict itself. When
sequencing people and events in time and space, narrating typically uses action verb, time
connectives, and simple past tense.
Genre of narration is the interesting event that can be conducted in form of
entertaining and good lesson story to tell or retell. But constantly, to speaking narrative is not
easy as it is. That is to be difficult to students by sharing something sophisticated
spontaneously or called as speaking narrative.
