SOULS
SATURDAY OF THE SOULS FOREFEAST OF PENTECOST

Saturdays of Souls or Soul Saturdays Commemorate the Faithful Disciples of Christ
throughout the ages who have Reposed in Christ.
Every Saturday is a Commemoration of those souls who have departed this
temporary life since our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, also Reposed in His
Tomb on Great and Holy Saturday.
However, special Holy Services to Commemorate the Souls occur several times
throughout the Liturgical Year of the Eastern Orthodox Christian Church at
specific Lenten or Festal periods:
Saturday of Meatfare the 2

Saturday before Great Lent before the

Sunday of Meatfare/the Last Judgement.

The 3rd Saturday of Great Lent
The 4th Saturday of Great Lent
Radonitsa or Monday or Tuesday after St Thomas Sunday
Saturday Before Pentecost Sunday
In certain churches a Saturday of the Souls is Commemorated on Saturday before

the Feast of St Demetrios of Thessalonika (26 October) or (as in the Bulgarian
Orthodox Church) the Saturday before the Feast of St Michael the Archangel and
the Heavenly Hosts (8 November).
These Saturdays of the Souls are devoted to Prayers for our departed relatives and
friends and all others whom we Commemorate, whether sinners or Saints.
The Divine Services on these days include Hymns Commemorating the Reposed
Souls in Christ and there is usually a Memorial Service served either after the
Divine Liturgy on Saturday morning, or after Vespers on Friday evening, for
which Koliva is prepared and placed in front of the Holy Cross or Holy Icon.
After the Service, the Priest Blesses the Koliva, which is then distributed amongst all
those present.
All Orthodox Christians observe Soul Saturdays on Meatfare Saturday, which is two
weeks before the beginning of Great Lent, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Saturdays of Great
Lent and the Saturday before Pentecost Sunday.
Some Orthodox Christians, such as the Serbian Orthodox Christians, observe the
Commemoration of the Souls on Saturdays before 8 August and 24 October,
while the Russian Orthodox Christians observe Memorials on Saturdays that are
the closest to 26 September (St Demetrios of Thessalonika) and 23 September
(Conception of St John the Baptist & Forerunner to Christ).
Another Memorial Day, Radonitsa, is not Commemorated on a Saturday, but either
on Monday or Tuesday of the second week after Holy Pascha.
Radonitsa does not have special Hymns for the Reposed at the Divine Services but a
Panikhida/Memorial Service will follow the Divine Liturgy, when everyone takes
Paschal food to the cemeteries to greet the departed with the Joy of the
Resurrection.

SATURDAY OF THE SOULS

Since the earliest era, our Holy Church has dedicated Saturday to the souls of those
who have Reposed in Christ.
Saturday is primarily the day when we remember and pray for all those Faithful
Disciples of Christ who have fallen asleep.
Christians always took care - with Memorial Services and Charitable Acts done
especially on Saturdays - to stay close to their dearly departed family and
friends, beseeching God for their peaceful Repose and Eternal Ssalvation.
Even today more people visit their loved ones graves on Saturdays than on any
other day.
But why is Saturday the Day of the Souls? There are many explanations and the
most likely appears to be that he word "Saturday" coming from the Hebrew
word Sabbath, - means rest, and thus we pray for the Repose of the souls.
Starting from this point of view, it is worth expressing a few thoughts so that we may
remember again Great Truths concerning Saturday of the Souls.
There are two essential Saturdays of the Souls - before Meat-fare Sunday and
before Pentecost.
Yet every Saturday is generally the day to contemplate and to remember those
basic and Saving Truths:

THESSALONIANS
Brethren, we could not have you

ignorant concerning those who are
asleep, that you may not grieve as
others do who have no Hope.
Since we believe that Jesus died and rose
again, even so, through Jesus, God
wll bring with Him those who have
Fallen Asleep.
This we declare to you by the Word of
the Lord, for we who are alive, who
are left until the Reappearance of the
Lord, shall not precede those who
have Fallen Asleep.
For the Lord Himself will Descend from
Heaven with a cry of command, with

The world does not end in whatever we can see and count, but also extends in
the space of the spirit, which co-exists with us and where the souls of our
departed Repose.
The Church is a continuous intercommunion between those of its members who
are still struggling on Eath and those who have already Reposed in Christ.
Amidst the fever of action and the Struggles of daily living, we must remember
that the natural terminus of every effort is Rest in our Lord, since there is
nothing more certain and utterly unavoidable - than Death and there is
nothing more uncertain than the Hour of our death!
