To whom it may concern:

My name is J.R. Perry III and I am a sickle cell activist and I have a 10 yr old son that has this
disease. On August 2, 2009, my son Jameel RaeShaun Perry was complaining of chest pain at
8:00 a.m. I, immediately took my son to Sunrise Children's Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. We
arrived in the E.R. around 8:30-8:45 a.m. I told the lady in the E.R. that my son has sickle cell
anemia and is suffering from acute chest syndrome. She told me that i need to fill out a form. So I
filled out the form and returned them to her and she told us to have a seat. There was another
family with us at this time waiting to be seen. She called the other family and then it was just my
son and I. 20 mins had passed. Another lady came into the E. R. with her 4-6 month old child and
they told her to fill out the forms and they called her right to the back. My son and I have now
been waiting 45 minutes. So I asked the lady why did she call her back when we were next. She
told me in a very mean, rude and ugly tone. " This baby is sicker than your son and we don't go
off of first come first serve basis." I told her that my son was having chest pains (acute chest
syndrome). She just told my son and I to sit down. So we went to sit down and waited another 15
minutes. Some of the other employees and a doctor heard what the lady had said. When we were
called to the back the nurse took my son's vitals and then had the doctor come in and he took my
son's blood, chest xray and he asked me about what the lady in E.R. had said. After checking my
son out he found him to have acute chest syndrome and pneumonia and decided to admit him to
the hospital. Jameel's breathing was getting worse and he was looking really weak. About 20
mins or so later they finally moved us to the 5th floor room 5102 where his Hematology Dr.
Bernstein and partner Dr. Johnson see there patients. Shortly after, the respiratory therapist
came in Mr. Doug Devine and began to give Jameel breathing treatments. We still have not seen
a doctor, I repeatedly asked. where is the doctor? The nurse told me that he was coming. Hours
and hours have passed and still no doctor. My wife and I continued to ask where is the doctor and
when is he coming? They just told us that he is coming and they never tell them when they are
coming in, sometimes they said that they come in the a.m. The nurses told them that they were
getting orders from Dr. Bernstein over the phone. So, Jameel was getting worse with pneumonia
on his lungs and acute chest syndrome in his chest and running a high fever and having difficulty
breathing. We spent the night at the hospital and Dr. Bernstein ordered Doug Devine from every
6 hrs to every 2 hrs to give my son breathing treatments. It was over 24 hours and still no doctor.
His breathing was not getting better but it was getting worse. So around 4:30 or 5:00p.m. August
3, 2009. Two doctors walked in and said that they were here for Dr. B as they called him. These
doctors were Dr. Avery and Dr. Philpot and they spoke to my wife and told her that they were
taking my son to I.C.U. So my wife immediately called me as they moved my son to I.C.U. The
nurses and the doctors told both of us that they were waiting for a special kind of blood for my
son, which took 6-7 hours to get. So as my son arrived at I.C.U. with my wife Nicole. She was
greeted by the I.C.U staff and the respiratory therapist Doug Devine whom told her that he also
works in I.C.U. and that he is glad to have Jameel over here in I.C.U. because he was not
comfortable with his breathing and the breathing treatments he was giving him. he also said that
he has talked to Dr. Bernstein and he said that he would be in, in and hour and then he talked to
him again and he said he was not coming in. Doug Devine of respiratory requested that my son
Jameel be moved to I. C.U. So my wife told me that she shook his hand and thanked him. So
Doctors told my wife that they were going to put him on the breathing machine because his
breathing was so low and they said if that does not work he may have to go on the ventilator. So
they put him on the breathing machine and still no Dr.Bernstein and no blood. So my wife and I
had a meeting with Dr. Avery and Dr. Philpot to ask what is going on and where is Dr. Bernstein
and where is the blood? So around 8:30-9:00p.m. they began a blood exchange with my son. Dr.
Bernstein finally shows up around 8:30-9:00p.m.We had a meeting with him as well, no
explanation. Jameel was worser than ever. His lungs collasped, very high fevers, pneumonia and
they had to do 3 blood exchanges to Jameel. So around 3a.m. in the morning on August 4, 2009
Robin, my ex wife spent the night up at the hospital and she is a nurse and she noticed that
Jameel was twitching. So she went and told the other nurses and they said that he was having a
seizure and they will do a cat scan and MRI to see if he has had a stroke. This was scheduled for
8a.m. on the 5th or 6th of August 2009. They took the test and had a meeting with all of us and
said that Jameel had a stroke on the left side of his brain and it affected the right side of his body.
My son is paralyzed on the right side of his body because of neglect from Dr. Bernstein. The
neurologist said that he will never be the same but time will tell. There is blockage on the left side
of the blood vessel. So they continued to give him blood exchange in his artery on his arm.2 of
the lines they put in his arm collasped. So they put a central line in his neck. So while he went
down for a surgical procedure to put dye in his brain to see what damage was done. They also
put a central line in his neck. I fired Dr. Bernstein and hired Dr. Klein who his colleague. they are
the only 2 hematology doctors in this state and there partners Dr. Johnson and Dr. Rashid. We
saw none of these doctors during this crucial time.We are devasted over this . Our families lives
have changed and this had affected our financial status for the neglect of Dr. Bernstein and the
Sunrise Children's hospital for not having another on call Hematology Doctor. We have not
recieved and explanation or an apology from Dr. Bernstein. My wife and I feel like this was
purposely done and perputrated. An also a act of Malice. About 6 months ago our son had a
incident in school in P.E. the P.E .teacher was upset withanother student and told them to all run
20 laps. Jameel told the P.E. teacher that he had sickle cell as well as asthma so the teacher told
him that he did not have to run and to sit down. So he did, but with the peer pressure of the kids .
They were teasing him and telling him that he was disabled and had special needs so Jameel got
up to prove to them that he could run. He came home very tired, dizzy and out of breath. As a
result he missed 5 days of school. So we decided to take him out of P.E. and we talked to the
principal at the school and the Jameel's teacher. They said it would be fine. He would just need a
doctors excuse. So we called Dr. Bernstein and asked for an excuse and we did not get a
response for several days. He finally faxed the excuse to the school . Allowing him to go to gym
but with limitations. So I called him and told him that we need Jameel completely out of P.E.
because he does not know his limitations. He refused to give it to us and it became an aggressive
tug of war for the safety and health of my son's life with this doctor. So we had a heated
discussion and he hung up on me. I decide to go to my son's pedetrician and get the excuse and
she wrote it right away. so I have not seen Dr. Bernstein in about 8-9 months. In December
18,2008 my son was admitted to Sunrise Children's Hospital for the same thing he was admitted
for this time. the only difference is that he sent his partner Dr. Johnson to treat him and Jameel
was out the hospital in 5 days. We had a follow up visit a week later and we met Dr. Bernstein at
his clinic. Dr, Bernstein has only been Jameel's doctor for about a year now. So it was not a
problen then and it should not have been a problem now. Like I said before this was an act of
Malice and a grudge against me that he took out on my son. this was personal. I never thought
that a Dr.'s excuse could ever lead to something like this. I have spoke with administration at
Sunrise Children's hospital, the staff, Doctors, nurses, case worker and social worker. No one can
give me an answer to why this happen. As of today August 12, 2009. They have took him off of all
of his IV's, oxygen, pain medicine and just about everything. and is talking to us about a rehab
place that no one will tell us as of a week where it is and just talking about how great he is doing
to get him out the hospital. My son cannot even pass the blowing of the ball method to test his
lungs. he is barely blowing up one ball. there are 3 balls. Please Help!!
