fyi,Ijustspoketothereporter.AsPaulsurmised,heiscoveringtheBenghaziissue,andhaslearnedthat
whenHillaryClintonwasSecretaryofState,sheapparentlyusedapersonalemailaccounttoconduct
governmentbusiness,andthattheStateDepartmenthasrecovered50,000pagesofemailsrelatingto
governmentbusiness,900pagesofwhichrelatetoBenghazi,whichStatehasturnedovertotheHouse
SelectCommitteeinvestigatingBenghazi.HewantedtoknowifthisviolatedNARA'slawsorregulations.I
toldhimthatIcouldnotspeaktothespecificsofthismatter,butcouldexplainthegeneralrulesandpolicies
inplaceatthetime,aswellasthenewlegalrequirement,whichIdid.Ireferredhimtothevariouspublic
hearingsonotherofficialsusingpersonalemailaccountstoconductgovernmentbusinesse.g.,OSTP,
EPA,CFTCandnotedthatNARAdoeslookintoallegationsofthistype,withourinterestbeingtoensure
thattheagencyrecoversanyalienatedrecordsandhaspoliciesinplacetoensurepreventsucheventsfrom
occurringagain.Thiscase,iftrue,wouldpresentaconcern,althoughitmaybethecasethattheState
Departmenthasalreadytakenappropriateactiontorecovertherecords.Hesaidhisstoryislikelytobe
postedonlinetomorrow,andaskedthatwenotsharethisinformationoutsideofNARAuntilitruns.

Indoingsomeresearch,IfoundaSeptember12,2012,NYTarticlewhereSchmidtwasacontributing
reporteronabackgroundstoryaboutthedeterioratingLibyansituationandAmbassadorJ.Christopher
StevenswhohaddiedthepreviousdayintheBenghaziattack.
ApersonalemailfromAmbassadorStevenstohisfamilyandfriendsinJuly2012figuresprominentlyin
theNYTstory.
