Applies to: GMNA Vehicle Engineering

1.1

DEFINITION OF SUPPLIER INTEGRATION

Data Owner: Wendy G. Johnson

Supplier Integration (SI) means utilizing worldwide supplier resources and expertise in engineering, design,
development, validation and program management of components, subsystems & modules.
There are four levels of Supplier Integration. These levels define the degree to which suppliers are integrated in the
engineering process at a component or subsystem level. Teamwork between GM and suppliers, especially in
worksharing within the SI levels, is explicitly defined for the specific component or subsystem development.

DEFINITION OF LEVEL OF TcAE MATH COLLABORATION

Data Owner: Wayne Didion

Teamcenter Automotive Edition (TcAE) math collaboration levels provide acceptable data integration/interaction
service level options:
No Collaboration - GM initiated pull/push of data from GM database to Supplier
Semi-Collaboration Supplier initiated (via TcAE client) pull/push (import/export) of data from a GM database to
Supplier.
Full-Collaboration Real-time, interactive, data sharing within a common GM database, or via Global TcAE
(formally referred to as DIMAN) which is a complete and autonomous TcAE installation where data is shared
with GM through replication process.

1.3

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SUPPLIER INTEGRATION AND TcAE MATH COLLABORATION

LEVELS

Data Owner: Bethany Martin

The desired GM to supplier Math Collaboration Level is based upon Supplier Integration Level. A more detailed
chart describing the responsibilities between GM and suppliers based on the supplier integration level and math
collaboration level is given in Appendix F of the SOR.

2 SUPPLIER MATH CAPABILITY ASSESSMENT PROCESS

Data Owner: Trish Warrian
Applies to: GMNA Vehicle Engineering
Suppliers must procure and utilize technical capabilities appropriate for the level of supplier integration as indicated
in the SOR. To facilitate this requirement, suppliers must complete a Supplier Math Capability Questionnaire prior to
submitting a quote during the sourcing process. The Questionnaire is accessible through GM Supply Power:
www.gmsupplypower.gm.com APPLICATIONS SMAD. Suppliers need to have both their Ultimate Dun &
Bradstreet number (DUNS number) and Engineering Dun & Bradstreet number registered with GM Supply Power
in order to complete the Questionnaire.
Once the Supplier Math Capability Questionnaire has been completed, the supplier will be assigned a Math
Capability Rating indicating their compliance to GMs requirements. This rating will be shared with Engineering and
Global Purchasing & Supply Chain (GPSC) via the Creativity Team Bidlist (CTBL). Supplier math capability and
readiness is a major factor in the contract award process--suppliers must present an action plan during the sourcing
Technical Review to address shortfalls. It is the suppliers responsibility to keep their Supplier Math Capability
Questionnaire up-to-date.
Complete process documentation is available via www.gmsupplypower.com DOCUMENT CENTER

3 MATH DATA QUALITY & DESIGN STANDARDS

Data Owner: John Bayley
Applies to: GMNA Vehicle Engineering; GM Powertrain Engineering, as noted

3.1 COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN (CAD) REQUIREMENTS

GM's strategic core CAD/CAM system for all global locations is Unigraphics (UG). GM requires all suppliers that
are involved with new product development program design data, including suppliers of tooling and fixtures, and part
manufacturers to be capable of communicating product and process math data in Unigraphics.
Data being submitted to GM must be generated in Unigraphics and maintained as defined in the Statement of
Requirements (SOR). The math data must be kept current i.e. updated any time there is a change to fit, form or
function.
Data Creation Standards (DCS) are the requirements for organizing Unigraphics math file(s). This includes the
rules for naming, File Log (used to manage internal file information), categories/layers and reference sets. DCS
were developed to improve communication through consistent file structure and eliminate costly cleanup and rework
of math data files. For more detailed information, please reference the engineering application, infoBOOK located
on www.gmsupplypower.com. The Unigraphics Math Data Supplier Guide which contains step-by-step
instructions for UG-native design practices) is also available on GM SUPPLYPOWER ENGINEERING LIBRARY
GLOBAL FOLDER PRODUCT DESIGN SUB-FOLDER (GM Powertrain exceptions are found in the
POWERTRAIN PRODUCT ENGINEERING folder).
The GM data creation standards documentation is included in the GM Engineering Standards Volume 2 and it is
distributed by:

3.2 MATH DATA REQUEST (MDR) PROCESS

Data Owner: Bethany Martin
The SMAD/MDR Process has been implemented at General Motors North America (excluding Mexico and GM
Powertrain. Powertrain has implemented its own version of MDR. See GM SupplyPower Engineering Library
Powertrain Product Engineering). The purpose of the MDR Process is to improve the delivery of Supplier math data
to General Motors. This process provides a common and consistent communication method that aids in determining
the root cause responsibility of late and poor quality math data.
Poor math quality and on-time performance that is determined to be the Suppliers responsibility may result in the
issuance of a 'Problem Report' (PRR). GM World Wide Purchasing and the Suppliers quality department review
PRRs. The Suppliers management must address these issues.
A MDR (Math Data Request), will be issued by GM Engineering that will identify math deliverables that are to be
completed and returned to General Motors by the 'Required Completion Date' identified within the request. The
MDR is now an on-line process in the SMAD (Supplier Math Assessment Data Base) and a notification will be sent
GM1825 SUPPLIER TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION

Page 5

v.7, December 12, 2006

to the Supplier informing them that they have a request pending. Note: Suppliers will access the SMAD application
at www.GMSupplypower.com. Upon completion of the Deliverables, the Supplier must deliver the Math Data either
through the Autoweb or a GM/TCAE client. The Computer Graphics Metafiles (CGM's ) made from the Unigraphics
Electronic Drawing (DWGFMT) must be delivered to GM through Autoweb per the process described in infoBOOK
(See new Policy/Procedures for Submitting CGM's for additional supporting documentation in infoBOOK at

5.2 REQUIRED TOOLS

5.2.1 Math applications: For purposes of the template these are the math applications considered:
GM Teamcenter Automotive Edition (TcAE) Client: Client is connected directly to TcAE database
over the networks connection.
Global Teamcenter (TcAE): Complete, autonomous TcAE installation data distributed through replication.
This option is negotiated on a case by case basis with General Motors.
Teamcenter Community (TcC): A TcAE tool enabling real time collaboration
5.2.2 Engineering Business System Applications (EBS): These are other GM applications identified by the
Global Access Process Team which approves access on a case by case basis. The Vehicle
Engineering Business Systems Applications by Supplier Integration Level chart (Illustration 6) outlines
templated business application needs of a supplier based on supplier integration level.

5.3 DATA TRANSFER VEHICLE

How data is communicated between GMNA and its suppliers.
5.3.1 No connection supplier will not have electronic data connection to GM.
5.3.2 AutoWeb no direct connection to GM. Supplier is connected to a mailbox system to trade data with GM.
(See Illustration 2)
5.3.3 ANX no direct connection to GM. Instead, suppliers and GM communicate via a Closed Proprietary
Network (See Illustration 3)
5.3.4 Direct Connect supplier is connected directly to GM systems. Real-time access to GM business
systems.
5.3.5 SSL-VPN - The Secure Socket Layer (SSL) Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a simple-to-implement
remote access solution. It provides real-time clientless browser access via the internet to Web
applications and file shares within the GM Network. (See Illustration 5)
GM Powertrain Note: Most suppliers function as non-collaborative suppliers using the Autoweb mail box with
GM Powertrain performing the export and import functions with the GM Powertrain TcAE database. Certain
suppliers do have access to GM Powertrain TcAE database

5.4 CONNECTION TYPES

Types of connection forms that are allowed in the template. (See Illustration 1)
5.4.1 Electronic Mailbox: though possessing a much lower transfer rate than a Direct Connection, this push/pull
access would be ideal for a supplier that has very few file transfers.
5.4.2 Extranet: a collaborative network that uses Internet Technology to link businesses with their suppliers,
customers or other businesses that share common goals. Extranets are usually routed through a third
party (i.e., ANX).
5.4.3 Direct Connection (Pt-to-Pt): (See Illustration 4): In a direct connect environment the supplier and GM are
directly connected by one of the following types of services: Opt-E-MAN or GigaMAN. Suppliers should
balance the needs of their business with the bandwidth requirements of this chart. Actual costs incurred
will depend upon rate, distance, support option and vendor pricing at time of order. Supplier must continue
to provide management / support on remote end of connection.
