Vitovalor300-P:
The future of power and heat generation
The energy transition is no longer just a matter of political debate. Fuel cell technology is
now ready to play an important part in the implementation of this transition. Viessmann is
the rst manufacturer to bring a fuel cell boiler from standard production for detached and
two-family houses onto the market.
At roughly 40 percent, the heating sector
accounts for the lion's share of the energy
market even more than power and
transport. The development of new and
advanced heating technologies is therefore of
tremendous signicance for all political goals
concerning energy and the climate. Even now,
modernisation of all existing heating systems
could provide the energy savings necessary
for a complete withdrawal from nuclear
power. Viessmann provides the technology
required the Vitovalor300-P high efficiency
fuel cell boiler for supplying heat and power to
detached and two-family houses.
Number one for efficiency:
Fuel cell technology
Optimal utilisation of energy is one of
the most important preconditions for the
successful transition to renewable energy.
Decentralised fuel cell boilers for detached
and two-family houses are the efficiency
technology of choice. In contrast to
conventional power generation, fuel cells do
not generate power by burning fossil fuels but
instead through electrochemical processes,
which is better for the environment and
protects nite resources. Furthermore,
almost 100 percent of the heat resulting
from this power generation is utilised for
DHW and central heating. Losses incurred
in transmitting power from a central power
station are eliminated because the electricity
is generated where it is used, in your home.

Proven and reliable: Fuel cell technology

from Viessmann and Panasonic
For Viessmann, innovating without giving top
priority to reliability and durability would be
unimaginable. With the new fuel cell boiler,
Viessmann once again turned to proven
technology. This is why the Vitovalor300-P
was developed in cooperation with Panasonic.
The fuel cell module in the Vitovalor300-P
is sourced from Panasonic. Panasonic has
manufactured more than 34,000 appliances
in series production for the Japanese market.
Viessmann has integrated this fuel cell into a
perfectly matched heating system with gas
condensing boiler, DHW cylinder and control.
Combining Panasonic's fuel cell know-how
and Viessmann's expertise in systems has
created the Vitovalor300-P a fuel cell boiler
that impresses in every way.

Proven successfully 34,000 times in

Technology

Fuel cell technology:

Energy efficiency and environmental protection
Turning away from nuclear power, reducing power generation from coal-red power
stations, expanding the use of renewables: Innovative heating technologies like the
Vitovalor300-P fuel cell boiler bring these goals within reach.
In view of the energy transition and rising
electricity prices, decentralised generation of
electricity is becoming ever more important.
Combined heat and power (CHP) is an
important addition to central power stations.
The political target is to increase the share
of power generated by CHP plants from the
current 16 percent to 25percent by 2020.
In addition to micro CHP units with Stirling
engines, this puts fuel cell boilers at the
forefront of decentralised power generation.

A further benet that arises from the use of this

innovative technology is greater independence
from rising electricity prices. If you consume
the energy you are generating, it will cost you
only about one third of the normal electricity
rate. Excess electricity is exported to the grid
and is remunerated at the contractual rate.
Fuel cell technology
This is how environmental protection works
Hydrogen and oxygen are all that is needed
to generate heat and power. The chemical
reaction between the two substances forms
the basis of what is sometimes referred to
as "cold combustion". It occurs between
two electrodes: Hydrogen is conveyed to
the anode, where a catalyst splits it into
positive ions and negative electrons. The
electrons travel to the cathode via an electrical
conductor, causing electrical current to ow.
At the same time the positively charged
hydrogen ions reach the cathode through
the electrolyte (an ion exchange membrane),
where they ultimately react with oxygen
to form water. Heat is released. The entire
process is completely free of pollutants and is
environmentally responsible.

Unusually high energy efficiency:

Combined heat and power
Generating electricity also generates heat,
which in central power stations is lost as waste
heat. Because CHP plants use the waste heat
for DHW and central heating, they attain a level
of overall efficiency which is twice as high as
that of the separate generation of power and heat.
Vitovalor300-P
Economy and investment in one
With combined heat and power, you can make
energy savings of up to 36percent, drastically
reduce CO2 emissions and thereby make an
important contribution to climate protection.

Natural gas:
Perfect for fuel cells
The energy source in the fuel cell is hydrogen.
It occurs in nature in vast quantities, but not
in its pure form, however. As the fossil fuel
with the lowest emissions, natural gas is
highly suitable for producing pure hydrogen.
First, the sulphur compounds are separated
out. Next, an upstream reformer converts
the natural gas into hydrogen and carbon
dioxide using a catalyst. Carbon monoxide is
converted to carbon dioxide in a downstream
gas cleaning unit.
The Vitovalor300-P is currently approved for
natural gas E. This type of gas is available
in Bavaria, Baden-Wrttemberg, eastern
Germany and in some other regions. By 2016
at the latest, the fuel cell boiler will be able to
be operated using all types of natural gas.

Fuel cell boiler

VITOVALOR 300-P
Heat and power generation with environmentally responsible technology: With the
Vitovalor300-P, Viessmann has launched the rst fuel cell boiler onto the German market.
Perfectly matched to the requirements of modern detached and two-family houses.

With the Vitovalor300-P, environmentally

responsible fuel cell technology has arrived
in detached and two-family houses. With
mature, proven components and the
reliability of a perfectly matched system, the
Vitovalor300-P provides convenient heat
and delivers electricity in amounts that are
suitable for households.
Two-in-One:
Compact unit with a long service life
The Vitovalor300-P comprises two units:
the fuel cell and the peak load module
with integrated gas condensing boiler.
The components are not merely perfectly
matched technically; they also form a single

unit visually and take up just 0.65 square

metres of oor space. With a thermal output
of only 1kW, the Vitovalor300-P ensures
long runtimes with a service life of more than
60,000 hours of operation.
No need for more:
High convenience from the
Vitovalor300-P
Heating new buildings requires much
less energy than older buildings. The
Vitovalor300-P is designed specically with
this in mind. With an output of 1kW the fuel
cell module covers most of the heat demand.
If more heat is required, the gas condensing
boiler switches on automatically for
example, on particularly cold days or if a lot
of hot water is used within a short period of
time. At the same time, the Vitovalor300-P
generates up to 15kWh of electricity per
day. That covers the basic demand of most
households, thus reducing electricity bills
considerably.
Personalised efficiency:
Your energy manager
The Vitovalor300-P has a heat bias and is
power optimised. The integrated energy
manager is adaptive and responds to your
personal needs. In reality, this means that
it only starts the fuel cell boiler when long
runtimes are expected, meaning long power
generation and domestic power consumption.

Vitovalor300-P: Maximum efficiency

in a perfectly matched system

Efficiency by design:
System technology from Viessmann
All components for the Vitovalor300-P installation are available from a single source:
Viessmann. Moreover, as a systems specialist, Viessmann ensures that the Panasonic fuel
cell is integrated perfectly into the overall heating system.

The whole is greater than the sum of its

parts. It is therefore not enough for all the
components in a heating system to be good.
They will only reach their full potential in
efficiency if they are perfectly matched to one
another. Viessmann, with its considerable

expertise in system design, makes sure of

that. From the DHW cylinder to underoor
heating, from fuel cells to hydraulics at
Viessmann everything is aimed at maximum
reliability and durability.

8/9

A perfect pairing:
Viessmann and Panasonic
By integrating the Panasonic fuel cell,
Viessmann is making use of proven, reliable
technology. The fuel cell, gas condensing
boiler, buffer and DHW cylinders, hydraulics,
sensors and control all elements are
perfectly matched thanks to Viessmann's
systems expertise.
Low return temperatures,
high efficiency
The Vitovalor300-P works particularly
efficiently when operated with low
temperatures. This is the case with area
heating, such as underoor heating, but even
radiator systems with return temperatures of
up to 40C work very well.

Prerequisite for public subsidies:

electricity, gas and heat meters
Decentralised power generation is subsidised
by the public purse, which is why electricity,
gas and heat meters are an integral part of the
Vitovalor300-P. This enables the calculation
of government power subsidies and energy
tax refunds.
Using a tablet or smartphone, you can access
the latest data on heat and power generation
and control the fuel cell boiler remotely.
Remote monitoring: Let your heating
contractor look after your system
For practical, 24-hour control of your fuel cell
boiler, a remote monitor is tted as standard
to the Vitovalor300-P. It allows your heating
contractor to keep an eye on your system
at all times. A reassuring feeling, as you can
always rely on trouble-free operation.

Subsidies

Comprehensive, competent, personal:

Support for all subsidies and applications
As an energy efficient technology for the future, the Vitovalor300-P
fuel cell boiler is subject to public subsidies. In order to benet fully from the subsidies
available it is important to nd out as much as you can about all subsidy options and apply
for them in good time.
With the Vitovalor300-P you are choosing
a high efficiency heating system which
can help you to save up to 36percent of
primary energy. In addition, however, it
is also possible to benet from various
subsidy programmes and bonuses, because
environmentally responsible technologies
are supported by national, regional and local
governments. Viessmann is well briefed on
all subsidy options and can help you to apply
for them.

Fully prepared and ready to go:

Applications to power supply utilities
and BAFA
The CHP bonus is deducted directly from
your electricity bill, so applications need to
be sent to your power supply utility before
and after commissioning. All applications in
the Viessmann guide, as well as the repair
log, are valid all over Germany and have
been completed for you, so all you need to
do is send them on. The guide also contains
step-by-step instructions on completing the
electronic registration form for the Federal
Office of Economics and Export Control
(BAFA).

Comprehensive and clear:

Subsidy and application guidelines
In the subsidies and applications guide for
the Vitovalor300-P, you'll nd all necessary
forms for approvals and subsidies for this new
fuel cell boiler. You will also nd information
about which applications must be lodged and
by when, in order to meet all the necessary
requirements for the subsidy. The guide is

Personal and competent: Your heating contractor will

be happy to advise you on any questions you may have
regarding subsidies and applications.

Benets year after year:

Power subsidies and energy tax refund
The total amount of electricity must be
reported to the utility by 31 December
annually. It is worth doing so, because the
[German] CHP law sets the subsidy amount at
5.41 cents per kWh. Furthermore, under the
energy tax law (EnergieStG), your energy tax
payments are refunded to you at the end of
the year. You'll nd all the necessary forms in
the guide.
However, this is not all there are even
more subsidies from which you can
benet. Germany's state governments and
energy providers offer numerous subsidy
programmes. A complete overview and
detailed information can be found on the
internet at www.viessmann.de.

Personalised support:
Expert advice from your heating
contractor
Whenever you receive money from the
public purse you can be sure that a lot of
bureaucracy will be involved, there will be
deadlines to meet and forms that need
to be completed correctly and sent to
the appropriate authorities. In addition to
the subsidies and applications guide, you
will receive personal, expert advice and
support from your heating contractor. Your
contractor has in-depth knowledge of the
Vitovalor300-P and knows exactly which
subsidies you are entitled to.

Brand new and yet already proven:

Satisfied customers commend the Vitovalor300-P
The Vitovalor300-P works with fuel cells from Panasonic which have already been
installed and used successfully in 34,000 installations in Japan. The overall system of
the new fuel cell boiler is also very impressive in operation, as satised customers can
conrm.

Mirko Schwan (right) is one of the

rst to own and operate the new
fuel cell boiler. Extremely reliable in
operation and sufficient in output,
the Vitovalor300-P generates heat
and power.

The new fuel cell boiler supplies Mirko

Schwan's new building with heating
energy principally for DHW heating
and with electricity.

Mirko Schwan: "With my new house I'm

going all out for energy savings! The heating
system has to be compatible with that
strategy as well, of course. That's why I've
decided to install the new fuel cell boiler
from Viessmann. As I need hardly any heat
for central heating, there's enough output
available for domestic hot water heating.
But best of all, a lot of my power demand is
covered by the Vitovalor300-P fantastic!"

The Dnges family decided to install a

Vitovalor300-P fuel cell boiler in 2013.
Jrgen Dnges: "Our decision to go with
the fuel cell boiler was exactly the right
thing to do. It took just two and a half days
to install the Vitovalor300-P. Now, we're
not just heating with a clean conscience as
regards the environment, we're also saving
a lot of power and our bills are lower. The
Vitovalor300-P covers fully two thirds of our
family's power needs, even though there are
four of us."

An ideal application scenario for

Vitovalor300-P is the Dnges
family's detached house. Despite
good thermal insulation and the
resulting low heat demand, the fuel
cell achieves long runtimes and
effective power generation.

The Vitovalor300-P is also suitable

for installation in refurbished existing
buildings, such as Dieter Lotz's apartment
building, built in 1970.
Dieter Lotz, owner of the apartment building:
"Actually, I thought fuel cell technology was
only suitable for new buildings. But when
we renovated the building, the heat demand
dropped drastically. The Vitovalor300-P is
now really paying for itself. We installed the
fuel cell boiler in the ground oor apartment.
On average, it now covers half the power
required there. And the excess power
generated when demand is low during the
day is exported to the grid. For that we are
remunerated accordingly."

The Vitovalor300-P from Viessmann

is also designed for supplying
individual apartments in apartment
buildings: Dieter Lotz (right), owner of
an apartment building built in 1970, is
delighted with the signicant energy
savings and lower electricity bills.
