while Mom and Dad enjoy

berry-flavored beers at the
adult-beverage garden.
Theres also live music, a
classic car show, cooking
demonstrations and more
than a hundred vendors.
Our slogan is what makes
happy Moms is happy
kids, said event organizer
John Javidan. We target
our event towards the
young families and families
with younger kids. Its an
opportunity for Mom to
get out, do some shopping,
have some really good
strawberry treats and let
the kids have a lot of fun.

New this year is the Berry

Fun Color Run on Saturday morning, the proceeds
of which will go towards
Rosevilles Valley Christian
Academy. Kicking off at
8:15 a.m., entrance into the
race includes free admission to BerryFest.
Also new this year is an
area Javidan is calling
Moms Retreat, where
moms can relax, complete
with temporary child
care, arts and crafts for the
young ones and semi-private restroom facilities just
for her.

FREE Mothers day

event takes you through
13 North Auburn art
studios
By Anne Stokes

his Mothers Day weekend, 19 local artists will

open up their home studios
to the public for the 19th
annual North Auburn Art
Studios Tour. With such a
wide variety of mediums
ranging from photography
and jewelry to watercolors
and blown glass, finding
that perfect gift for mom
(or yourself) should be a
breeze.
Artist Janet Nicholson,
group founder and one-half
of Nicholson Blown Glass,
banded together with her
neighbors nearly 20 years
ago to foster a supportive
community for the arts, as
well as to pool resources.
We decided there was
more strength in numbers,
and if we worked together
we can help each other
with advertising and putting the brochure together,
Nicholson said. Were all
really close together, just
a few miles apart, so that
makes it an easy drive to
see all the studios. Theres
so much variety. Every
artist is so creative and so
spontaneous, and everyone

has their own style and so

I think that we all compliment each other without
competing with each other.
I think its wonderful to
have a cooperative spirit
for that.
Photographer Vincent
DiLeo, who has been with
the group for the past
few years, explains that
home-studio showings
allow artists to connect
with patrons in a way thats
sometimes difficult in a
gallery setting.
You get to talk to the
artist, you get to see where
they create art, and a lot
of times you find out why
they create art, the inspiration behind the art, DiLeo
said. When I talk to people
about some of the strange
photographs that I do,
theyre very shocked that
they have so much meaning to them. For a lot of
people who do art, theres
more to it than just a pretty
piece of art on the wall.
DiLeo, who started his career as a teen with the Roxbury News Journal in New

I have done a lot of my

This year, the artists are
dedicating their showings
to pastel artist Reif Erickson,
who recently passed away.
A long-time member of the
Auburn arts community,
Ericksons works will be on
display at several artists
studios throughout the tour.
All of the artists will have
their creations on display
and for sale at multiple
locations throughout the
Auburn area during Mothers Day weekend.

Its just so special to buy

something thats hand
made, hand crafted, hand
painted here locally as
opposed to big, box store
shopping, Nicholson said.
We have a couple of clay
artists, painters, several
jewelers, we have people
working in fiber, so you can
find something wearable,
which is always fun for
Mothers Day, we have a
couple of photographers,
we have metal sculptors,
my husband and I do glass

variety. Theres got to be

CHRISTINAS
By Tim Robinson

n a recent afternoon,
I made way into
Christinas for a lunch date
with my mother-in law. We
both chose to have soup
and something; for me soup
and salad and for my dining
partner soup and half
sandwich.
The soup of the day, a beef
and vegetable ancho soup,
that had a base that resembled a fine French onion
soup, was delicious and
perfect for an early afternoon meal.
My salad, Caesar with
chicken, was tasty with
the chicken very moist and
having a hint of citrus. My
mother-in law went for the

the Crabby Tuna Melt that
appeared to be filled with
ample tuna/crab salad and
was reported to be very
delicious.
Owner and Chef Eric Thomson, of Christinas American
Bistro in Meadow Vista,
said he is pleased to see his
business growing.
Officially opening just before Halloween of last year,
he said, things are looking
up, as they near their sixmonth anniversary, he said.
Serving breakfast, lunch,
and dinner, the menu is a
mix of regional and classic
American fare. And, every-

thing they serve is local and

fresh as much as possible.
For breakfast, choose from
more traditional breakfast
items like breakfast burritos,
French toast, or veggie omelets, or if you are interested
in something on the lighter
side, you may want to try
the Fruit and Greek Yogurt.
Lunch features an array of
salads, such as the classic Caesar or the Buffalo
Mozzarella & Tomato Salad:
with Italian style mozzarella, Meyer lemon oil, fig and
porcini balsamic reductions.
There is always a soup of
that day, it changes daily,
and sandwiches offer a

The atmosphere is what I

No kidding.

Root, a 1997 graduate of

her third Spartan Race in
just eight days.
16 - May 2015

On Jan. 17, Root finished

the Spartan Beast course
featuring more than 25 obstacles across over 12 miles
in just 2 hours and 47 minutes. She was fifth among
903 female racers, second in
the 35-39 age group.
A day later, she crossed the

of the Spartan Sprint
despite 15 obstacles. She
ended in 11thplace overall
with a 1:12.49 time.
Saturdays Super surpassed eight miles of a
Spartan battlefield with a
ridiculous terrain, intense
physical challenges and 20
obstacles.
These obstacles are no joke.

Its very hard, but fun,
and just knowing that you

and they encourage you,
people being active in all
shapes and sizes just enjoying fitness and helping
each other.
Root played soccer in high

BODY YOGA
IN ROSEVILLE TAKES NO EXCUSES

Photos by Anne Stokes

Studio offers early and late classes to

accommodate the most hectic of schedules
By Anne Stokes

athryn Body found a career in yoga

by accident. Literally. As an active
22 year old, Body survived a severe car
accident. Doctors told her that her she
would never be able to resume her active
lifestyle and that her knee would have to
be replaced. Through intensive physical
therapy, however, Body has been able to
stave off such a replacement, crediting her
yoga practice with keeping her active and
in one piece.

18 - May 2015

I stepped into a Bikram class and absolutely loved it. I was very drawn to the
physical nature of the practice and have
continued with it ever since, through
my pregnancies and the births of both of
my kids, said Body. Im very grateful
for having good health as a result of
regular yoga practice. Its helped me
tremendously over the years and its had
an incredibly positive impact on my life.
Thats why I decided to open a studio.

Body has been practicing for the past 20

years and operating her studio for the
past four. Formerly known as Bikram
Yoga Lincoln, Body Yoga has been in
their current Roseville studio on Blue
Oaks Blvd. since November of 2014.
Body Yoga offers several types of classes
scheduled throughout the day, starting
as early as 5:30 a.m. to as late as 8:15 p.m.
Students can opt to take Bikram classes
(more commonly known as hot yoga),
90-minute classes in a room heated to just
over 100 degrees. The studio also offers
Restorative Yin, Ashtanga, Power Yoga,
and Gentle Yoga classes, depending on
students needs and abilities. Ashtanga
and Restorative Yin, while similar to
Bikram, are offered without the heat.
Once a week, the studio offers Gentle

with physical restrictions that make regular classes unfeasible.

yoga practice is that its non-impactful,
youre using your own body weight.

Its geared toward people who do have

limitations. I use bolsters to prop them
up so they are getting the benefit of mobility, Body said.
The benefits to practicing yoga run the
typical fitness gamut: increased strength
and flexibility, stress relief, improved
cardiovascular health, increased energy
levels, and weight loss. Yoga is unique
in the fact that its a low-impact form of
activity, making it suitable for just about
anyone.

But as with any fitness regimen, success

depends on putting in the time and hard
work. Body, who previously worked
long and stressful hours as a textile designer in San Francisco, understands how
the pressures and demands of work and
family can derail even the best intentions.
At least 50 percent is showing up, isnt
it? As with anything in life, you can
always make excuses. Anyone can do
this practice, truly anyone, said Body.
Because I feel so passionately about
this practice, Im trying to eliminate all
the excuses for people. You cant come
because you work 9:00 to 5:00? Guess
what, we have a 5:30 a.m. class and we
have showers here so you can get ready
here and go to work. You dont like the
heat? Were offering unheated classes
now. Write it on a schedule and be honest with yourself because youre worth it
and show up.
As far as my family and my kids go, I
hope that theyre learning by my actions,
more than by my words, how to take care
of themselves, she added. My hope
is that people will come back and it will
become a life-long practice and that they
feel better about taking care of themselves. Its pretty amazing when you
realize you can do this.

Spring Fashion
GAME PLAN FOR REFRESHING YOUR WARDROBE
Spring is here, flowers are blooming and its time to freshen up your
wardrobe. Here are some tips to transition from a buttoned up winter to
warm sunny weather and purge pieces that are no longer making the cut for
this fresh new season. Roll up your sleeves and do a little purging. Be very
honest about what looks great and feels good on, perhaps invite a girlfriend
to help. Below are helpful tips to walk you through facing your wardrobe.
Getting Started: Plan the day to work in your closet. Schedule the time
thoughtfully with little distractions. Make sure you have a full length
mirror in a well lit location. Wear a good fitting bra so when trying on
clothing everything will look like it should. Dont forget shoes that would
be intended for certain outfits to fairly critique how it is all pulled together.
Consider buying new matching hangers preferably felt style that are slim
and help clothes from slipping off.
Create two boxes: one for donations and one for seasonal
cold weather to be stored or hung elsewhere. Make a bag
for dry-cleaning, especially for the much worn winter
staples. Keep a list of items that need to be replaced as
you retire worn out items.

Ask Yourself:
1. Do I feel good when I wear this?
2. Have I worn this in the last year?
3. Can a seamstress make this useful
again (making a good hem, taking it
in or out, fixing zippers, buttons, etc).
4. If I went shopping today, would I
buy this again?
5. Is it too worn, faded, too short, pilled?

Now as you find the items to keep, play with creating different outfits.
As you hang your favored clothing items, organize them in a way that
will ease putting your look together when time is crunched. Hang like
clothing together such as sleeveless shirts to long sleeve knits. Separate
skirts, shorts (if there nice enough to hang), pants and dresses. Separate
cardigans and lightweight sweaters, they are fun to layer and complete an
outfit. Hang scarves and belts so theyre visible.
After you have finished, take your list and buy some new
basics. Perhaps its time to invest in something new to help
take you out of your style rut. Get creative, mix and match
and bring in some complimentary colors.

Congratulations on facing your fashion

spring cleaning and enjoy the sunshine!

The Sea is good

By Penne Usher

here is nothing like

a fresh sea breeze to
revitalize the soul.
I recently took a trip to the
coast to relax and unwind
and for me one of the most
picturesque and perfect
places to relax are Point
Reyes in western Marin
County.
There is plenty to do in the
area and watching the
waves and tule elk is definitely on the must do list.
My boyfriend and I stayed
in the small town of Olema
at the Point Reyes Seashore
Lodge which has been a
favorite destination for
several years. We stumbled
upon the place by accident
one sunny Sunday several
years ago.

28 - May 2015

The place isnt seaside, but

it is only feet away from
the entrance to Point Reyes
National Seashore.
On our first visit we were
looking for a place to eat
after spending the day
at Muir Beach when we
landed at the Farmhouse
restaurant in the tiny hamlet of Olema.
They have a full bar, great
barbecued oysters, a friendly staff and a wonderful
dinner menu.
Weve returned several
times.
On our most recent trip, we
stayed at the same lodge,
dined on Cioppino and
took in the sites of Point

Reyes and Tomales Bay.

Not to missed spots within
the park abound including the Point Reyes iconic
lighthouse.
The lighthouse is a 45-minute drive from the main
visitor center at Bear
Valley along Sir Francis
Drake Highway.Visitors
can access thelighthouse
visitor center, the upper
observation deck, or the
308-foot staircase down to
thelighthouse on a short
0.4-mile hike from the
parking area.Ranger-led
tours of the lighthousekick
off between the hours of
2:30-4 p.m. Friday through
Monday, but the stairs are
subject to closure when
winds speeds exceed 40
miles per hour or lightning

for the soul

is present. Take note, its a
long walk back up the 308
stairs.

This trip we enjoyed a

picnic in a quiet pasture
in the Tule Elk Preserve in
adjacent Tomales Bay State
Park after picking up picnic
supplies in Point Reyes
Station.
Point Reyes Station owes
its existence (and part of its
name) to the railroad that
ran through for 59 years,
ending in 1933.
A must for me for any
picnic is cheese, to go with
the wine of course. A stop
at Cowgirl Creamery is a
definite experience and
they have samples.
The Palace Market, also in
Point Reyes Station, offer
fresh fruits and vegetables,
crackers, cheeses and an
amazing wine selection.
If you are in the mood for a
good Bloody Mary, stop in
to the Old Western Saloon,
located across the street
from the market. Turns out
Prince Charles made a stop
by a few years back. His
photos are above the wellworn bar.
Hike, bike, ride the Harley,
pack the kids, leave the kids
at home and pack a picnic
basket for two, but go. Your
soul will thank you.
