Calls to keep over-50s

in active employment
BUSINESS in the Community
is calling for urgent changes to
keep people aged 50 or older in
work, as a report is launched
highlighting the economic
impact of a high number of
over-50s who are forced out of
employment.
The new report, the third and
final in the Missing Million
policy series, was launched during Responsible Business Week.
More than one million people
who want to work have been
forced out of employment due
to factors such as health or
redundancy.
Barriers such as age-related
bias and poor understanding of
the needs of older workers are
preventing many from staying
in employment and finding new
jobs.
Rosie Sweetman, director of
Business in the Community
Cymru, said: By 2022, 12.5 million new jobs will open up as
people leave the workforce,
and an additional two million new jobs will be created,
yet there will only be seven
million younger people to fill
these vacancies. We are facing
a recruitment black hole of 7.5
million. By not engaging with
the over-50s, or removing them
from the workforce, businesses
are going to come up against an
acute shortage of workers and
talent.
The new report includes recommendations for business and
the UK government, informed

through research undertaken

with ILC-UK and consultation
across different industry sectors.
Among these, it calls for the
government to give employees
the legal right to request flexible
working prior to starting a new
job, rather than after 26 weeks of
work; paid leave for carers; the
introduction of a national skills
strategy, including IT training,
and better integration of health
and social care services with
employment.
Business in the Community
also appeals to employers to
drive change through moves
such as implementing unconscious bias training for everyone involved in recruitment;
widening apprenticeships to the
over-50s; introducing flexible
benefits, and adapting training
and development opportunities
to people of different ages.
Rosie Sweetman said: It is
dangerous for our economic sustainability to assume that young
people alone make up the future
workforce. If we dont act now to
encourage and enable people to
stay in work for longer, we will
face a deficit of experienced,
skilled and productive workers
when we need them most.
The UK is faced with an ageing
population, with the number of
people over 65 years old set to
almost double from 10 million
to around 19 million by 2050. To
enable the government to pay
for an ageing economy, the state

pension age is projected to rise

in line with life expectancy, with
many of us likely to be working
up until the age of 70 and beyond. Without this rise in SPA,
the cost burden of supporting
each individual above pension
age would be split between just
two younger people by 2051,
rather than the 3.2 who share
this cost today.
Hayley Ridge-Evans, director
of operations at PRIME Cymru,
said: In Wales nearly a quarter
of a million people aged 50 and
over are economically inactive, including those claiming
Job Seekers and Employment
Support Allowances. We need to
ensure this huge resource is embraced, and that their skills and
experience are not lost forever.
Older Peoples Commissioner
for Wales, Sarah Rochira, said:
An increasing number of
older people are unable to afford
retirement at state pension age
and also want to stay in employment to retain their independence. Older people have a wealth
of knowledge and experience
that is currently underappreciated and undervalued in the
workplace.
The Ageing Well in Wales
Programme recognises the need
to prioritise opportunities for
employment and new skills for
older people to ensure that they
are able to be as socially and economically active as they wish.

Training Provided

Successful candidates will complete a full apprenticeship programme to include NVQ Level
3 Extended Diploma, BTEC Level 3 and 5 Essential Skills at Level 2.
Training will combine on-site Company based training at the brewery and attendance at the
training centre on a block release basis.

The Role
Working towards an individual sales target you will be expected to be resourceful and self motivated.
Sourcing and canvassing new clients to introduce to our portfolio and in-turn being proactive and creative
in inding solutions to their advertising and marketing needs. This will run in sync with the ongoing
management of existing, established clients, ensuring they are receiving the best possible value from our
product portfolio.
The Person
As a Field Sales Representative you will need to be self motivated and driven towards achieving revenue
targets. Conidence in working under your own initiative is essential, although there will be occasions that
you are required to work on team projects.
Time management is key to this role, along with being able to adhere to rigid deadlines. Previous sales
and/or customer service experience could be advantageous, although this is not an essential requirement as
a comprehensive training programme is in place.
The Package
