AlthoughAtlanticInternationalUniversity's
individualizedDistanceLearningDegreePrograms,

acceptanceworldwide.Nontraditionalprograms
areimportantbecausetheyrecognizeknowledge
gainedoutsidetheclassroomandincorporatea
broadermorecomprehensiveviewofthelearning
experience.ItispreciselythisrecognitionandviewthatchallengestheestablishedAcademic
Community.Forexample,AIUprogramsallowforauniquepersonalizedprogramofstudyby
permittingthestudenttofollowanopencurriculumwherethetopicsandcoursestakenarenotpre
definedbutcollaborativelydeterminedbythestudentandfacultyatthebeginningoftheprogram
(Phase1)tobestalignthestudentsdesires,interests,industryspecificneeds,local/regional
opportunities,employmentgoals,andpastknowledgeintotheirprogram.Inthiswaywecan
ensurethatthecontentfollowedbyeachstudentisfocused,uptodate,andaddressesrealworld
concernsthatwillpaydividendsimmediatelyandaftergraduationinthestudentsprofession.By
incorporatingandragogic(selfdirected)principlesoflearningtheAIUstudentusesthetoolsand
resourcesavailableattheuniversitywhileseekingtoactuponrealworldtasks,projects,
assignments,thathaverealsubstanceandmeaningnotjusttheoretical,toearncreditsand

completeacademicrequirements.Suchanapproachleadstoanimprovedholisticdevelopmentof
theindividualwithdeeperlearningandgreaterconfidencetotakeonthechallengesthatare
commonplaceintodaysfastpaced,global,andconstantlychangingenvironment.Therefore,for
thebenefitofourstudents,AIUhasdecidedtobeanautonomousuniversitycomplyingwithall
localandfederalregulationsintheUSwhereaccreditationisavoluntaryprocess.Atlantic
InternationalUniversityhasavoidedseekingaccreditationbyarecognizedagencybytheUSDept.
ofEducationbecausethatprocessisobsoleteandwouldbeinconflictwiththeUniversitysMission
toofferaffordable,qualityhighereducationtothenontraditionalstudent(onewhomustwork,
studywhathereallyneedsforprofessionaladvancement,attendfamilyissues,etc.).Wealsobelieve
thatadoptionoftheseagenciescriteriawouldimposeincreasedfinancialburdensonstudentswhile
severelylimitingopportunitiestothestudentstogettheirdegreeandadvanceinallaspects.Many
greatinstitutionsareunaccredited.Weinviteyoutocompareourprogramsandphilosophywith
traditionalclassroombasedprogramstodeterminewhichisbestsuitedtoyourneedsandbudget.
AIUhaschosenprivateaccreditationthroughtheAccreditingCommissionInternational(ACI)and
theInternationalAccreditationOrganization(IAO),bothareindependentandnotregulatedor
approvedbytheUSDepartmentofEducation.ATLANTICINTERNATIONALUNIVERSITYIS
NOTACCREDITEDBYANACCREDITINGAGENCYRECOGNIZEDBYTHEUNITEDSTATES
SECRETARYOFEDUCATION.Note:IntheUnitedStates,manylicensingauthoritiesrequire
accrediteddegreesasthebasisforeligibilityforlicensing.Insomecases,accreditedcollegesmay
notacceptfortransfercoursesanddegreescompletedatunaccreditedcolleges,andsome
employersmayrequireanaccrediteddegreeasabasisforeligibilityforemployment.Ifastudent
outsidetheUSwishestocarryoutaparticularprocedurewithinacountrysDepartmentof
EducationregardingtheirdegreeearnedatAIU,suchproceduresaretobecarriedout
independentlybythestudent.AIUrespectstheuniquerulesandregulationsofeachcountryand
doesnotinterveneorinfluencetherespectiveauthorities.Werecommendprospectivestudentswho
intendtocarryoutsuchproceduresoutsidetheUStoverifyindetailthestepsandrequirements
neededinordertobefullyinformed.
AIUisincorporatedinthestateofHawaii.AsaUniversitybasedintheUS,AIUmeetsallstateand
federallawsoftheUnitedStates.ThereisnodistinctionbetweentheprogramsofferedthroughAIU
andthoseoftraditionalcampusbasedprogramswithregardstothefollowing:yourdegree,
transcriptandothergraduationdocumentsfromAIUfollowthesamestandardusedbyallUS
collegesanduniversities.AIUgraduationdocumentscanincludeanapostilleandauthentication
