You may register in person 7:30 am - 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday at the Community
Education Office in the Community Learning Center, 912 1st Avenue NE, Austin, MN
You may register with a credit card by calling 460-1706 or 460-1700 or on the web at

Fees must accompany all registrations. Make checks payable to Austin Public Schools.
Register early, all registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Registration required unless otherwise noted.
Financial Assistance
Financial assistance is available to families who qualify. Applications are available at the
Community Education Office at 912 1st Avenue NE or call 460-1706. Not all classes have
scholarships available.
Location and time for each class/activity is listed in the course description. Signs will be
posted in the building where the class is held indicating the specific room for the class.
Parents are responsible for dropping off and picking up their child on time. Students who
are not picked up on time repeatedly will be dropped from the class. Class instructors are
not responsible for supervising your student before and after class.
Some classes are targeted for specific ages, gender, or have other requirements. Those
details are listed in the class description.
Behavior
Summer Enrichment is a privilege for students. Students are
expected to conduct themselves in a manner that facilitates
instruction and the learning process. Disruptive students will
be dismissed from the program without a refund.
Kids Korner
School-Age
Child Care
Kids Korner is an affordable, quality childcare program
designed to meet the needs of working parents. The goal
of this program is to provide an environment in which the child is encouraged to learn &
grow with minimum formal instruction. We provide a structured recreational
environment where learning is emphasized through experience.
Kids Korner is a program designed for families that need child care on a regular basis.
Kids Konnection is a program designed to meet the needs of families that only need
child care on an occasional basis, non-school days, early release days, or on weather
emergency days. Both programs are available during the summer months, are housed
at Neveln Elementary School, and incorporate a theme-based camp program. Hours
of operation are from 6:15 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Each program
has a separate fee schedule. Closed Friday, July 3th, 2015.

Readers Caf
WANTED:
We need gently used childrens books for our summer reading centers. We are especially in need
of early readers and young chapter books. Drop off your book donations to any Austin Public
School main office. No textbook or adult books are accepted.

the Rhythm!
The Austin Public Library invites children of all ages to participate in the
2015 Summer Reading Club!
There will be performers, storytimes, crafts, games and reading programs
for kids of all ages. All programs will be held at the Austin Public Library, and
all programs are FREE!

Junior Master Gardeners U of M Extension - Families
FREE
The community garden at the Mower County Fairgrounds is where youth and families gather
to grow and learn. We will offer a variety of sessions with topics ranging from plant science to
cooking. Our garden produce is used for hands-on food and cooking demonstrations. We donate
excess food to our local food shelf. Call the extension office with questions at 507-437-9552.

Rockets to the Rescue! U of M Extension - Entering grades 5-7

It is your mission to design and build an aerodynamic food transportation device that can
deliver a payload of nutritious food to disaster victims. Youth will learn engineering concepts, develop
math skills, learn about nutrition and help solve a relevant, global issue. Sponsored by the University

Reading & Fitness Boot Camps Ages 6-10
$15 per camp
Two camps are offered - pick one or do both of the three week camps where kids will focus on being
active while learning at the same time. They will meet in the Gazebo at Horace Austin Park (East of
the Municipal pool). This is a collaboration is between Austin Public Library, Austin Community
Education & Austin Park & Recreation. Each participant will set a fitness and literacy goal per
session. A school sack lunch will be provided. You will visit the library and cool off at the municipal
pool. Wear your swim suit under your clothes each day.

Big Thrill & Lake Minnetonka Youth Trip Entering grades 5-8

*We will start the day with 2 intense hours of action at Big Thrill Factory (BTF) including laser tag,
BTF Time Challenge, Mini Golf, and Trampolines. Students can enjoy lunch in the BTF Cafe where
they serve salads, pizzas, wings, sliders, sandwiches, and desserts. (no outside food is allowed)
*We will then go to Lake Minnetonka Swimming Pond for an afternoon of beach time! The swimming
pond is staffed with certified life guards and offers concessions and beach umbrellas.
*Registration deadline is Monday, June 22nd.
*Students will need extra spending money for lunch and snacks at BTF and Lake Minnetonka.
*Admission package to BTF and entrance fee to Lake Minnetonka is included.
*Items to bring: tennis shoes and socks, swim suit, towel, sunscreen, snacks & drinks for bus.
*A signed waiver is required for BTF and is available in the Community Education office or online

This is the place to go this summer! Bunker Beach has it all - wave pool, water slides, lazy river,
plunge pool with wiggly water walk(very challenging!), and a rock wall! Certified life guards on duty.
We will have a full day with all the swimming activities you can handle.
Admission to Bunker Beach is included.
*Registration deadline is Monday, July 13th.
*Students will need extra money for lunch and snacks at Bunker Beach and
optional $6 wave pool tube rental (they really don't need it).
*Items to bring: swim suit, towel, sunscreen, snacks & drinks for bus.

Getting bored? You won't be on this trip to Ironwood Springs. A very full and active day is planned for
students!
*The Challenge Course allows participants to experience mental and physical success and recognize
that the seemingly impossible or difficult is often quite possible, especially working as a team. It is a
way to teach teamwork, trust, and life skills in a powerful hands on approach. The purpose is to
increase participants' self-confidence, mutual support within a group, and a gentle reminder about
others.
*They have a total of 17 low element challenges: Singing Platforms, Ragin' River, Electric Corral, Wild
Wave, The "Wall", Jungle Rope Swing, Broken Bridge, and the Spider Web and many more. Students
will also enjoy the archery range, bouldering wall, sling shot range, and animal farm.
*Registration deadline is Monday, August 3, 2015.
*Students will not need any extra spending money. All activities included.
*Items to bring: cold lunch, tennis shoes and socks, sunscreen, snacks and drinks.

Riverland Community College doesnt just cater to the educational needs of adults. This summer Riverland is
offering Kids College, a summer enrichment program for children. The program is designed for kids entering
4th, 5th and 6th grades in the fall of 2015. They must be comfortable in a fast-paced learning environment.
Classes will stimulate and encourage creativity, develop thinking and problem-solving skills and bring together
kids who love to learn.
When and Where
Riverland Kids College will be offered June 22-26 in Austin at Riverland Community College East Building,
1900 8th Avenue NW. The program starts at 8:30 a.m. each day with a large group gathering. Students will
take two classes; the first meets 8:45 a.m. 10:15 a.m., the second from 10:30 a.m. 12:00 noon.
Tuition
The cost is $85 per child for the week. This includes two classes, supplies (unless otherwise noted),
refreshments, T-shirt and certificate.
Enrollment
In most cases, a minimum of 10 students must enroll before a course can be offered. Early registrants are
more likely to be assigned to the courses they select, but due to some class cancellations and popularity of
classes, first choices cannot always be honored. Students will be notified of their class assignments by mail the
week of June 15.
Campus and Classroom Behavior
Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that facilitates instruction and the learning process.
Disruptive students will be dismissed from the program without a refund.

Volunteer Leaders
Volunteer leaders are welcome to help facilitate Riverland Kids College. They will escort children to classes,
supervise during breaks, serve refreshments, and assist instructors during class time as needed. Selection will
be on a first-come, first-served basis. Please consider volunteering even if it is only for part of the week; it may
be possible to coordinate with others. Adult volunteers may deduct $5 from one students tuition for each day
of volunteering, with the refund being issued at the end of the event week.

This course is a study of the military, political, economic, cultural, and social aspects of the Civil War as a pivotal event in
our nations history. This course will require students to build upon their existing language, vocabulary, reading
comprehension, critical thinking, problem solving, oral expression, and listening skills. Students explore the causes of the
war, how a nation coped with the struggle across multiple dimensions, and how we dealt with the conflict's aftermath.
Special emphasis is on the continuing debate that the impact of the Civil War had on both the North and the South.
Creative Writing

the publishing process.
Crochet in a Day

Crocheting and knitting are todays hot new hobbies. Have YOU learned your stitches? If not, heres your chance! Join
us to learn the basics of crocheting, including choosing your yarn, making that first slip knot, creating a chain, and
admiring your first completed project. A material list will be sent with registration confirmation.
Discovering Horses
Instructor - Stephanie Bruggeman
Want to learn how to make a career out of doing something you love? If you have a passion for working with horses you
can do just that! This course will teach you all about horse care (horse husbandry) from day-to-day to emergency
situations, horse anatomy, horse nutrition, riding techniques & more! We'll also talk about how to turn your hobby into a
life-long career. You may even see a horse on campus!
I Am An Author
Instructor Doran Rickert
This course will cover the writing process with emphasis on personal style. Writing responsibly will be shared throughout
the class. Students will study personal writing and subject writing; some reflective writing will be shared. After this class,
you will have many reasons to write, write, write for a lifetime.

Instructor - Austin Public Utilities
Have you ever thought it would be fun to drive a car, make a light bulb, or generate electricity by a wind turbine you built
on your own? Come explore renewable energy in this hands-on, electrifying class! You will learn concepts of energy,
electricity, and renewable energy generation, all while having fun. Class includes racing a solar powered car that you
design and take home! No prior knowledge is needed, just an enthusiasm to learn and have fun.
Robotics

Have you ever wondered how machines seem to just work all on their own? In this introductory robotics class, students
will gain a basic understanding of how to design, build and program robots to solve everyday problems. Students will
have hands-on experience with a robot in class.

Calling all scientists! Do you want to blow up a bar of soap in the microwave? Or make a rocket with something found in
your medicine cabinet? How would you like to amaze your friends by making water disappear? Join me on an adventure
where well explore the fascinating and seemingly weird world of science as real scientists! Well use the Scientific
Method and keep a journal, construct a hypothesis, do an exciting experiment, and analyze our data every day.
World War II

This course introduces students to the Second World War in the context of world history and modern warfare. The course
will require students to build upon their existing language, vocabulary, reading comprehension, critical thinking, problem
solving, oral expression, and listening skills. Taking a global perspective, this course covers all theaters of war, and
relates events in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Southeast and Southwest Asia, the Pacific, and Latin America to each
other. Students will compare and contrast the economies, industry, society, and culture of the United States, Great
Britain, Russia, Japan, and Germany during the Second World War. The role of diplomacy and strategy, the impact of
war upon society, and the fighting on land, at sea, and in the air are also examined in the context of modern warfare.
