10 Steps to Memorising the Quran

10 steps to memorising the Quran

Memorising the Quran is a great virtuous deed. It will intercede for the one who memorises it and will
also act as prevention for one to enter Hell-Fire. According to ahadith, it is also narrated that Allah
will never put a person in Hell-Fire who has any part of the Quran in his heart.
The 'Golden Age', as described by the classical scholars is between the ages 5 to 23 years. Definitely
the golden age is the best time to memorise the Quran as it is the peak of a person's memory. This
age factor is a great bonus and aid for those wishing to memorise the Quran and should be utilised
by the person immediately.
Below are 10 simple steps a person needs to practice in order to memorise the Quran fast and
effectively:
1. Al-Ikhlas - Sincerity
The first step to ease the memorisation of the Quran is sincerity. The person must memorise the
Quran for the sake of reward and to please Allah. Not to show off, aim to impress others or in order
to get a Job (e.g. as Imaam of the Masjid).
2. Correct the pronunciation and recitation
Another factor that will help a person memorise the Quran is to correct the pronunciation and
recitation of the Quran. This can be achieved by listening to a Qari whose style of recitation you like
and makes you feel connected to the Quran.
3. Specify how many verses you want to memorise on a daily basis
For example, commit yourself to memorise 3, 5, 10, 20 verses per day.
If you give yourself a target to memorise 3 verses per day, read the three verses you have
memorised along with the new three verses you are trying to memorise e.g. If you memorise 3
verses on one day, the next day you should memorise another 3 verses and repeat the verses you
memorised the day before.
Another tactic to memorise the Quran is to keep repeating the verses at any opportunity with tajweed
(tune). The tajweed will cause the person to enjoy the tune of recitation thus allowing the person to
memorise that verse.
4. Do not exceed the limit of your day
If you have committed yourself to memorising 5 or 10 (for example) verses per day then do not
exceed it.
Commit yourself to a regular number of verses you wish to memorise everyday and do not change
this pattern.

5. Memorise from only one copy of the Quran

This is because in every Quran, the layout of the verses is different. If you memorise from one copy
you will have a mental picture of the verse in your mind, whereas if you attempt to memorise from
many different copies of the Quran, it could lead to confusion and difficulty in memorising the Quran.
6. Understanding is a mechanism of memorising
Understanding the verses will definitely increase memorisation and also khushoo (ritual fear and
focus) during salah.
7. Do not go to another chapter until you finish the chapter you are on
Memorising the Quran in chapters is the best way to memorise the Quran as it will be easier to
remember where you stopped last.
8. Do not listen to yourself all the time
It is advisable to recite in front of someone who is Hafiz ul Quran (who has memorised the Quran) as
this will benefit the hafiz and he will correct him on any mistakes he makes.
9. Continuity - Always recite to yourself, wherever you are
It has been reported the Messenger Muhammad (saw) said that the Quran will run away from the
tongue of a person faster than an untied camel. Make sure you are constantly reciting the Quran
wherever you are e.g. on the bus, whilst travelling, relaxing at home etc.
10. Identify the patterns of the verses
The Quran is Mutashaabihaat, which means that it has a pattern. Verses often look and sound like
each other, which is a great aid to memorising the Quran.
Difficulties in memorising the Quran
For those who have passed the golden age, have disability or any hardship in memorising the Quran,
it is advisable to have plenty of honey and black seed, which are natural remedies that aid
memorisation as-well as cure sicknesses.

Almost every Muslim wishes to memorise the Quran and many have embarked
upon the journey of doing so, yet a number among them do this task rather
haphazardly, which leads to difficulty in the process of memorisation as well
as increasing their chances of forgetting what they have memorised. In view of

the great need of ensuring the successful memorisation of the Quran, some
practical steps toward efficient memorisation and avoiding setbacks are stated
in this article:
1. The Same Copy
Use the same Mus-haf (copy) when you read the Quran and stick to it so that
you may become familiar with it and know the sites of various verses and how
to find them quickly when you revise what you have memorised.
2. Reader
Try to find a knowledgeable reader, such as a Shaykh (scholar) who is well
versed in the rules of Tajweed (correct recitation). Start reading to him what
you intend to memorise beforehand so that he may correct any wrong
pronunciation.
3. Group
Read and memorise the Quran within a group rather than individually.
Members of groups help each other in correcting mistakes and thus make the
task easier. Prophet Muhammad
said: "Whenever a group congregates in
one of the houses of Allaah (i.e., Mosques) to recite the Book of Allaah (Quran)
and study it, peace and mercy will descend upon them, the angels will
surround them and Allaah will mention them to those with Him (i.e., the
angels)." [Muslim]
4. Repeat
Repeat what you have memorised to yourself frequently, and the best way to
do this is during the prayers.
5. Tajweed
Learn the basic rules of Tajweed before you start memorising and try to apply
these rules while memorising. Allaah Says in the Quran (what means): " And
recite the Quran with measured recitation." [Quran 73:4]
6. Supplication
Supplicate to Allaah to help you in memorising what you have read of the
Quran. Many Hadeeths (Prophetic narrations) point to how this is to be done.
7. Sequence of Chapters
Begin memorising the Quran from the last section (Juz') and work backwards,
as the verses in the last section are shorter and more familiar.
8. Audio Cassette

Listening to an audio cassette of the Quran will assist you in memorising what
you have read and make it easier for you to know the right pronunciation and
intonation; however, you must choose a reader who is well known for being
skilled, so that you can memorise the Quran correctly.
9. Location
Try to read the Quran in a quiet location and stick to this if you can, as this will
put you in the right mood to memorise the Quran and keep you away from any
distractions. An example of such a place is the Masjid (Mosque).
10. Time
Make reading and memorising the Quran a daily activity and allocate a special
time devoted to this purpose. Try to choose a suitable time when you are fresh
and not tired. The best time is at dawn, as Allaah Says (what means):
"Indeed, the recitation [of the Quran] at dawn is ever witnessed" [Quran
17:78] and that is after the Fajr (dawn) prayer. Avoid reading and memorising
in the late evenings when you come back from work tired and sleepy, as it will
be difficult for you to concentrate at that time.
11. Understanding
Try to understand the meaning of what you memorise, as this will assist
further memorisation and enable you to act upon what you read.
12. Review
Always review what you have memorised and make this a regular habit;
otherwise you will tend to forget what you have memorised after a while. It is
advisable to review the whole Quran every thirty days. Prophet Muhammad
said: "Take care of the Quran (by memorising it). I swear by the One in whose
Hand is my soul that it is easier to slip away from you than the camels from
their shackles." [Al-Bukhaari & Muslim]
13. Encouragement
Encouragement of your household, particularly the children, will help them to
compete with each other, particularly if you also reward them with gifts.
Memorising the Quran at an early age is very rewarding as the ability to
register and recall knowledge and information is quicker and easier then than
in later years. Also, when you get older, your responsibilities increase and you
might find it difficult to find enough time to achieve your goals.
14. Intention
You should be sincere to Allaah and make your intention to seek the reward
from Him before beginning memorising the Quran. You should feel that the
Quran is there to guide mankind to good. Allaah Says in the Quran (which

means): "This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those
conscious of Allaah." [Quran 2:2]
One should also realise the great reward of reading and studying the Quran,
and there are many Hadeeths which emphasise this point. Not only are the
Muslims who read the Quran rewarded, but those who listen to it are as well;
Allaah Says (what means): "So when the Quran is recited, then listen to it and
pay attention that you may receive mercy." [Quran 7:204]
Reading and memorising the Quran is not difficult, and this fact was stated
clearly in the Quranic verse (which means): "And We [i.e. Allaah] have
certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will
remember?" [Quran 54:17]
15. Avoid Ostentation
After memorising the Quran, avoid showing off and arrogance. Being given the
ability to memorise the Quran is a blessing from Allaah, and people might
become proud of themselves to have accomplished this task. Some people
might then want everybody to know of their achievement and thus be admired.
This is a kind of Shirk (associating others with Allaah in worship) which is a
dangerous and punishable act. One should be thankful to Allaah as it is He
who made it easy for him to memorise and understand the Quran.
16. Loud
Try to read with a reasonably loud voice and listen to your reading. Avoid
reading silently - this will also help you to overcome laziness and tiredness.
17. Set an Amount to Read and Memorise
Set a certain amount of verses to read and memorise from the Quran at every
session. Start with a small amount and then increase gradually. Do not be
driven by your enthusiasm as this will shortly wear out. It is more important to
persevere in memorising, no matter how small the amount is.
18. Manners
Once you have memorised the Quran, endeavour to acquire its manners, apply
it in your life and act upon it, as this obligation is more emphasised on those
who know it by heart.

Bismillah
As a belated part-two to our Seeking Knowledge series, sister Mariam E. and I conducted an interview with
Ustadhah Kareema Czerepinski on memorizing the Book of Allah as a follow-up to our advice on the proper
methods of pursuing sacred knowledge. It is the perfect time for students to start or renew their memorization
now that the summer break is upon us and Ramadan is right around the corner inshaAllah. We hope that these

answers are beneficial to you and us. May Allah make us from the Companions of His Book and unite us with His
righteous slaves in the highest gardens of Paradise. Ameen.
Ustadhah Kareema Czerepinski, author of the three part book series: Tajweed Rules of the Qur'an, memorized
the Quran and went on to receive an ijaazah in the way of Hafs 'an 'Asim, by the way of Shatibiyyah, and
another ijaazah by the way of Tayyibat Al-Nashr. She then continued and received an ijaazah in the ten qira'aat
min tareeq Ash-Shaaitibiyyah and Ad-Durrah. She is in charge of the non-Arab division at Dar Al-Huda Qur'an
school for ladies.
What is your advice for the one who has embarked on the journey to memorize the Quran?
Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is You who is the Knowing,
the Wise.
Assalaam alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. First of all, I thank you for the good supposition you have
about me, pray that this is for the benefit of the Muslims, and ask Allah to guide me in my answers to that which
is best and helpful to the Muslims who wish to learn and memorize the Words of Allah.
This question alone is one that books could be written on. I will try not to, but it is hard. The main three points of
advice surround intention, schedule, and being tested.
Intention
Of course the first step is to make one's intention solely for the pleasure of Allah and not for any earthly gain. I
say of course thinking that it is hardly possible for one to embark on this journey without pure intentions,
as it is one that requires great amounts of time, patience, and perseverance, continual supplication to Allah for
success, and deep from the gut determination. Then again, lately there has been a rise in Muslims forging
documents, claiming to have a certificate they dont, or a chain of transmission that they dont, all to
charge others great amounts of money for the chance to recite to them. The stories get more and more
amazing as the years go by and some Muslims lose track of the fact that Allah is always monitoring, watching our
every move and knows what is in our hearts. For that reason, I feel like it is still the number one thing to say,
even though it is obvious. The Muslim brothers or sisters who have embarked on or are going to embark on
this journey need to be honest with themselves and clear up any kind of wiswas (whispers) that may occur in
their intentions.
The student may want to research the sound ahaadeeth on the benefits of memorizing the Quran and the
honor those who have memorized receive on the Day of Resurrection. One may put posters up in different part
of the house with some of the ahaadeeth, then change them every week or so, to help refresh the intentions and
feel motivated.
Schedule
The next is to set up a reasonable schedule, one including daily memorization and review. It is of the upmost
importance that this schedule is neither too ambitious, so the student of memorization doesnt get frustrated
and give up, nor too easy so the student feels unchallenged and loses interest. It is always best that the
memorization and review are sequential and not random. This helps give the memorizer a clear picture of where
he/she is and where he/she is going.

The best way for most is to be in an organized group with a set curriculum, time and days of class. This helps
keep motivation up, as no one likes to be behind the class, and also formulates bonds of brotherhood/sisterhood
between the students for mutual cooperation and assistance. There are some who do better on an
individualized program, but with a group where each person recites what he/she has memorized to the teacher or
individually has a set date for reciting his/her memorization to a teacher. Still others have the patience,
perseverance, and self motivation and control to do the memorization by their selves. On the whole, this form
takes the most struggle as it is easy to get distracted and fall out of the daily routine when there is no appointed
time to recite to a teacher and no group for extra motivation.
It is important to set apart a specific time of day to memorize and review, the time of day when there is the least
amount of noise, and least amount of chance of being bothered or distracted. This time is set by the individual
circumstances, but if possible right after fajr is what I would recommend.
Review/Testing
Dont be in a hurry to finish memorizing and whiz through it without the memorization being firm. The
student should be able to close the mushaf (copy of the Quran) and recite what he/she memorized completely
without a mistake, then that same section should be repeated during the day. It is very important, no,
imperative, that someone who is proficient in the Quran listens to what has been memorized and checks it.
It is also crucial to be tested on a whole juz when finished, and then on groups of ajzaa, such as 3, 5, or 10
at a time as the memorizer progresses through the stages of putting the Quran in their memory.
The review part of the daily section is just as important as the new memorization. One cannot call himself or
herself a haafidh when in fact he/she memorized piece by piece and never put it together or reviewed intensely.
How does one face a period of laziness that might attack in the middle of this journey?
The student of the Quran needs to realize before they start that shaytaan is going to come to them and try to
dissuade them from their noble goal. The wiswas can be in the form of making one feel like it is never going to
end, or seeing others having fun while the student is struggling forth, or any other sort of tool. Knowing
this should keep the student on guard and help recognize the cause of the laziness or feeling of wanting to stop.
The worst thing to do at this time is take a break from memorizing. This will make returning to the memorization
more difficult and usually one will feel like the task has become harder. The best thing to do is make dua,
renew one's intentions, change the hadeeth on the wall to a new one and read all the previously hung hadeeth.
Reading others stories of struggle can also help.
What is the best way to schedule memorization around work, school, and/or other responsibilities? Or is
it recommended to take time off and devote oneself completely for it, for better results?
As previously mentioned, the student of memorization needs to find a quiet, consistent time where he/she can
memorize and review. Memorization should have first priority in the day, and inshaAllah there will
be barakah in the remaining activities.
It is hard to say whether it is better to take time off from studies and work to memorize or not. Oftentimes with a
tight schedule and well planned time control one can do more than freeing oneself completely to devote all one's
time to memorization. For many, taking time off is not an option. Others do better in a classroom situation
with a set curriculum and complete devotion to memorization.

Any tips on the best way to memorize the Mutashabihaat verses? (i.e. those verses that are repeated,
similar, etc.)
Memorizing them isnt nearly as difficult as keeping them straight when reviewing. Since memorizing is a
slow build up, the first few mutashaabihaat are not too difficult to keep straight. It is later when firming up
memorization and reviewing that it can become difficult. One tool is writing down the different stories of the
same content or groups of aayaat and comparing them. As the same story comes up in different surahs, the
memorizer can add the new aayaat to his/her comparative list and study them and review them all at the same
time, finding the similarities and differences. The stories of the Prophets is one area in which this is especially
needed.
There are numerous books in Arabic which help with the mutashaabihaat and there are poems. One specific
poem which helped me personally was As-Sakhkhaawiyyah. I didnt memorize the whole poem, but
learned some parts and read through it and that helped keep many things straight. For example the lines
outlining the places in the Quran which have abadan after khaalideen feeha really helped.
Some Muslims just can keep them straight by themselves, though, masha Allah and dont need
mnemonic devices to keep them straight.
Many Muslims feel that learning tajweed is not necessary; can you shed some light on why it is a critical
part of learning the Qur'an?
The Quran was revealed in the Arabic language and was recited by the Prophet, peace and blessings of
Allah upon him, and the Sahabah with tajweed. Why would one want to recite it another way? The Arabs at
the time of revelation spoke with idhgaam, ikhfa, etc, all the rules we now study to be able to read the
Quran with tajweed. There are parts of tajweed which were not in the normal Arab speech such as the
lengthening of the sounds in the mudood, and this was then passed down in authentic chains of transmission to
us and documented in the old books on tajweed.
There are parts of tajweed which are vital to know, since without applying them the actual letters can change in
sound and a major mistake is made. This is the basic tajweed knowledge that all Muslims should apply in their
reading, whether they are memorizing the whole Quran, or just memorizing a few for their prayers.
What level of tajweed does one need to possess before embarking on the journey to memorize Quran?
This would depend on one's ultimate goal. If one is memorizing with the intention of never teaching anyone else
and just to get the honor and reward, then it would be enough to know the basic rules such as the laam saakinah,
mudood, noon saakinah, makhraj, and meem saakinah. I would caution however, that many times Muslims
memorize, then later decide they want to teach or find themselves in a situation in which they are the only ones
around who knows any amount of Quran, or change their mind and want an ijaazah, and then have to go
back and learn everything in detail. This can be quite difficult.
For most Muslims I would say that they should learn the above, plus all the rest of detailed tajweed because
those who have memorized are usually called upon to teach and have a duty to help other Muslims. One
cannot teach properly without having a strong basis of knowledge themselves. One can start memorizing at a
slow level while learning the tajweed rules and being corrected on its application in recitation, and later after
learning the required tajweed step up the memorization quantity.
Is it possible for one to perfect their tajweed and pronunciation without a teacher, perhaps through
listening to recorded recitations only?

It is possible, but not very likely. The way the Quran has been taught from the early days of this nation and
will continue to be taught is by oral transmission, being taught and listened to and corrected by a trained,
mastered Quran teacher. There are a few who are very good at imitating sounds and have the ear to pick
up the small minute changes in sound heard from recordings and produce them with their own mouth, but this is
not the average person, not even some, instead it is a rare case. Again, it can happen, but the general rule for
the vast majority is that it is extremely important that one is corrected by a trained teacher.
Is it required to memorize the last harakah of each ayah if one does not have a solid background in
Arabic grammar?
One doesnt need to have a solid background in Arabic grammar to memorize the last harakah of the
aayah. One needs to have a solid Arabic grammar background to explain the reason for the harakah. When
we memorize the Quran we should pay attention to the last harakah and try to memorize it with the rest of
the aayah. Many shuyookh giving ijazaah request the student of the ijaazah to join aayaat together particularly
in the shorter surahs to make sure the student knows the vowel on the last letter of an aayah. Knowing the vowel
on the last letter of the aayah becomes particularly important in learning and applying the different qiraaat.
Many people associate memorization with being young. Is it possible for someone to begin memorizing
after the golden years of memorization? And what is your advice for such a person?
Youth on the whole can memorize easier, but age should not stop anyone from memorizing. Sometimes
Muslims have a mental picture of those over 40 or 50 not being able to memorize, but there are many stories of
Muslims memorizing the Quran later in life, some even starting in their 60s and succeeding in
completion.
With purity of intention, lots of dua asking Allah to make it simple, and determination, nothing is impossible
with Allahs help.
I know of a sister in her 30s with 5 children who memorized the whole Quran in 3 years and went on to get
an ijaazah. She had to sacrifice sleep and many other things we generally hold important, but she did it for
Allah, and by His will, she accomplished her goal. My advice is to never give up.
What advice do you have for new Muslims and older Muslims who face difficulty with memorizing and
pronunciation?
The same advice as above, do not give up. Turn to Allah, dont be afraid of the struggle and devote
yourself to the Quran. You do have to sacrifice, but the reward of Allah is great for all your efforts. Some
give up too easily, but be stubborn in your pursuit of reading the words of Allah correctly and keep trying.
Dont make excuses for yourself and dont let your ego get in your way. The students who do the best
on the whole are those who are eager to be corrected, do not complain, and are not afraid to make a mistake.
What are some habits that a student of the Qur'an should implement?
You probably mean study habits, but more important is improving themselves as Muslims and making that a
habit. Pray tahajjud, fast extra fasts, make sure you implement the aayaat of Quran in your life and are a
shining example of those of the Quran.
Stay away from sin, repent for all your sins and stop anything that is not suitable for ahl al-Quran.
(the people of the Qur'an)

Do not waste time, it is a precious commodity for the student of the Quran, so use it wisely and use it for the
sake of Allah. This is something I cant say enough. Many Muslims have lofty goals, but lose their precious
time searching the Internet for different recordings of recitation from multiple shuyookh, looking up details of the
qiraaat and other advanced details of tajweed when they themselves are relatively beginners or have not
progressed far in their memorization. Focus on the task at hand, and listen to one of the masters of tajweed
such as Sheikh Al-Husary or Sheikh Abdullah Basfar.
What should be the goal(s) of a student who has completed their memorization and what should they do
after this?
This is really up to the student for most aspects, but the goal that should be shared by all after memorizing the
Quran is to firm up the memorization and have a very strong review program to keep themself a hafidh.
Once the memorization is complete it is not the end, it is just the beginning.
If the student of the Quran would like to achieve an ijaazah of the Quran after memorizing and firming
up the memorization, they should approach a sheikh or sheikhah with an ijaazah and be evaluated by them. If
the student has not memorized the Jazariyyah poem, and wished to get an ijaazah in the Quran, he/she
should memorize the Jazariyyah and study its meaning. After the evaluation, the sheikh or sheikhah might
give them points to work on, or start an ijaazah with them.
After an ijaazah in one riwaayah or qiraaah, the student can then pursue knowledge of the 10
qiraaaat. There is much to learn and each step is more beautiful than the previous one.
In your opinion, what is the best method of reviewing the Book of Allah, so as not to lose it by Allahs
will?
The scholars say, [Review] five, you wont forget ( ), meaning if you
review five ajzaa per day, you will not forget. This is a very true statement. If one cannot keep up
reviewing 5 per day all the time, they should try to do this strong program of review for at least six months after
completing memorization. After that the student who cannot keep up with five ajzaa per day can decrease
the amount to 2 or 3 a day, or the very minum, one juz per day; any less than this will not keep the
memorization strong.
How much repetition is required for one to completely solidify the hifdh? What has worked for you/your
students?
It is hard to quantify and varies from individual to individual. Suffice it to be said that it requires a lot of
repetition, and for six months the review should be quite intense with five ajzaa per day reviewed, if at all
possible.
The school I studied at has special classes for tathbeet (firming up memorization). As a class we went through
the Quran six times, the number of students in the class, and each day recited three ajzaa to the
teacher as a class, but we didnt know which section we were going to be asked to recite as individuals.
We were required to recite at a quick pace, trying to keep our tajweed up as much as possible, so the
memorization needed to be quite firm. The teacher would keep track of which sections we had recited to her and
at the end of the year, each of us had recited the whole Quran to her, but in pieces. This was and is a very
good program and I thank Allah for giving me the opportunity to be in this class.
Please recommend a Tafseer suitable for beginners. Which tafseer did you benefit from the most?

The translations into English of the meaning of the Quran give only a general idea of the aayaat, and it is
quite important that a deeper understanding of the Quran and the background for a surah or aayah be
known, as well as any explanation given by the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah upon him, and the
Sahaabah. Ibn Kathir is a great tafseer and al-hamdu lillah it has been translated into English. May Allah
reward those who did this with a great reward and make it of the deeds which continue accumulating for them
after their deaths.
How important do you think it is to study tafseer along with memorization? Does it aid in memorizing?
It is extremely important and yes it aids greatly in memorization, especially if word by word meaning is given to
the students as they memorize. There needs to be study of vocabulary words along with the memorization and
tests given on the vocabulary words.
How can we instill love for the Qur'an in our children and youth?
By showing them how much we love it and by employing the Quran in our life in every aspect. Teaching
them that Quran is first is something they will carry with them to adulthood. I heard a lecture once
recommending that parents always start their children with Quran homework, then any other deen related
subjects, then the other science, math and literature subjects. This will show the children the importance of
Quran.
There is no doubt that one who carries the Book of Allah must also carry beautiful conduct and
character. Can you please shed light on some of the most important characteristics of Ahl-al-Quran?
There are so many, as ahl Al-Quran should be examples of the best in character and conduct.
We should aim to have our manners as [what is in] the Quran as Aisha may Allah be pleased with her,
described the Prophet peace and blessings of Allah upon him. Even though we are far from his example, we
should try our utmost.
I think the one encompassing characteristic is that of Taqwaa. If one has taqwaa, everything else will be
correct, insha Allah.
The following are what came to my mind, and are under the category of taqwaa:
First and foremost, those who are carriers of the Quran should have truthfulness and honesty. It
cannot be that ahl al-Quran tell lies or are dishonest.
Another very important characteristic is standing up for the truth and not wronging anyone or allowing someone
to be wronged.
The inside of Ahl Al-Quran should be like their outward appearance, meaning there should be no hypocrisy.
Patience is also a very important characteristic which those who are carriers of the Quran should have.
May Allah grant us the best of manners and characteristics, may He purify our intentions in all that we do, may
Allah make us of ahl al-Quran, and give us the honors promised those who have memorized the
Quran on the Day of Resurrection. I seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him alone.

During one of his seminar about the Sciences of the Quran, sh. Yasir Qadhi shared with us
some practical steps that helped him memorize the Quran during his teenage years.
Realize its a spiritual AND physical project. Its a miracle and blessing from Allah
subhanahu wa taala that youre able to absorb the Quran. If you want to take advantage of
this blessing, you should be in a position to receive it and therefore strive physically to
achieve it and strive spiritually to get the maximum benefit.
1. Sincerity. The first matter you have to pay attention to is your intention (if you intend
good you will get good). Make sure that the intention you are making is only for the sake of
Allah SWT, to seek His Pleasure so that inshAllah, with His Mercy, we will be rewarded in
the Aakhirah. It is not to show off in front of others that you have memorized a lot. Sincerity
is not a one time factor rather its a continual battle that you always have to renew.
2. Consistency . The more frequently you memorize, the easier it becomes. It is very
essential to be consistent, and not to skip even one day. There is no Week-end in
worship. The bare minimum that one should memorize is at least 3 lines, 5 is more ideal. If
you are consistent, inshAllah, you will be able to be huffadh in 5-6 years
3. Timing. The first thing you should do in the day is memorize even do so before your
breakfast, because this is your spiritual breakfast. The best time to memorize is right after
Fajr. . (sh. Yasir used to take one hour to memorize a page in the beginning, and eventually
came down to 15-20 minutes)
4. Atmosphere. Have a secluded place to go to and memorize in a place that is quiet. You
just cant memorize properly with distractions, so turn off all your devices (like cell phones)
5. Familiarity: start at the same time, at the same place and use the same mushaf every day.
You need to have your own copy of the Mushaf (the Madani Mushaf is highly
recommended), it will later become so dear to you.
6. No Magic trick: repeat, repeat, repeat, over and over again. It is just repetitive recitation
and/or listening that will help to memorize.
7. Memorize with the meaning: read the translation before you start and try to match the
Arabic words with their meanings
8. Surround yourself with recitation: listen to the Quran. Before you start memorize, listen
to what you are about to memorize. Sh. Husary is highly recommended (see here the best
resources to help you memorize)
9. Find a recitation buddy: get a friend, a family member or someone you know who will
listen to your recitation every day. Ideally, get someone who is also memorizing to create a
peer pressure system.
10. Recite daily in your salaat what you have memorized. If you forget one portion, you
will immediately rush towards the Quran and correct your mistake and you will never do this
mistake again.
11. Triple daily dose:

a)

New memorization at your assigned time of the day

b) Revision of the previous 7 days, just before you start the new memorization: This is
because the fastest thing you forget is the new memorization. And doing so, will also build
the connector between the old ones and the new portion you are going to memorize. Plus, it
will be a good warm up for the brain when you recall from your memory and recite, before
you go into the real exercise of doing the new memorization.
c) At a later/another time of the day, revise those before the recent 7 days. The bare
minimum should be 4-5 pages.
12. Do not jump around. Be consistent. Dont try to go to another surah if you find it
difficult and stick to the order. That way, you will have the satisfaction of having completed a
juz rather than leaving some portions here and there.
13. The three chunks. Start from the back. Shorter surahs will bring you a big boost. You
should divide the memorization of the Quran in three parts:
a)

Juz 28, 29, 30 or just Juz 29, 30

b) Surah Al-Kahf till Juz 28

c)

Surah Al-Baqara to Surah Al-Kahf

(JazakAllah Kheir to those who shared their notes from the class
What is the best age for my children to learn Quran? As they are still young, they are only 6
years old?
Thank you Shaykh Hisham & May Allah (swt) bless you!
Answer:
wa `alaykum salam,
The best age is 8, 9, 10, 11; these are best ages to learn, up to 14. After becoming 20 it
becomes very difficult to memorize. By 23 that ability is finished so the younger they start, the
better.
Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani
Almost every Muslim wishes to memorise the Quran and many have embarked upon the journey of
doing so, yet a number among them do this task rather haphazardly, which leads to difficulty in the
process of memorisation as well as increasing their chances of forgetting what they have
memorised. In view of the great need of ensuring the successful memorisation of the Quran, some
practical steps toward efficient memorisation and avoiding setbacks are stated in this article:

1. The Same Copy

Use the same Mus-haf (copy) when you read the Quran and stick to it so that you may become
familiar with it and know the sites of various verses and how to find them quickly when you revise
what you have memorised.
2. Reader
Try to find a knowledgeable reader, such as a Shaykh (scholar) who is well versed in the rules of
Tajweed (correct recitation). Start reading to him what you intend to memorise beforehand so that
he may correct any wrong pronunciation.
3. Group
Read and memorise the Quran within a group rather than individually. Members of groups help
each other in correcting mistakes and thus make the task easier. Prophet Muhammad
said:
"Whenever a group congregates in one of the houses of Allaah (i.e., Mosques) to recite the Book of
Allaah (Quran) and study it, peace and mercy will descend upon them, the angels will surround
them and Allaah will mention them to those with Him (i.e., the angels)." [Muslim]
4. Repeat
Repeat what you have memorised to yourself frequently, and the best way to do this is during the
prayers.
5. Tajweed
Learn the basic rules of Tajweed before you start memorising and try to apply these rules while
memorising. Allaah Says in the Quran (what means): " And recite the Quran with measured
recitation." [Quran 73:4]
6. Supplication
Supplicate to Allaah to help you in memorising what you have read of the Quran. Many Hadeeths
(Prophetic narrations) point to how this is to be done.
7. Sequence of Chapters
Begin memorising the Quran from the last section (Juz') and work backwards, as the verses in the
last section are shorter and more familiar.
8. Audio Cassette
Listening to an audio cassette of the Quran will assist you in memorising what you have read and
make it easier for you to know the right pronunciation and intonation; however, you must choose a
reader who is well known for being skilled, so that you can memorise the Quran correctly.
9. Location
Try to read the Quran in a quiet location and stick to this if you can, as this will put you in the right
mood to memorise the Quran and keep you away from any distractions. An example of such a place
is the Masjid (Mosque).
10. Time

Make reading and memorising the Quran a daily activity and allocate a special time devoted to this
purpose. Try to choose a suitable time when you are fresh and not tired. The best time is at dawn,
as Allaah Says (what means): "Indeed, the recitation [of the Quran] at dawn is ever witnessed"
[Quran 17:78] and that is after the Fajr (dawn) prayer. Avoid reading and memorising in the late
evenings when you come back from work tired and sleepy, as it will be difficult for you to
concentrate at that time.
11. Understanding
Try to understand the meaning of what you memorise, as this will assist further memorisation and
enable you to act upon what you read.
12. Review
Always review what you have memorised and make this a regular habit; otherwise you will tend to
forget what you have memorised after a while. It is advisable to review the whole Quran every
thirty days. Prophet Muhammad
said: "Take care of the Quran (by memorising it). I swear by
the One in whose Hand is my soul that it is easier to slip away from you than the camels from their
shackles." [Al-Bukhaari & Muslim]
13. Encouragement
Encouragement of your household, particularly the children, will help them to compete with each
other, particularly if you also reward them with gifts. Memorising the Quran at an early age is very
rewarding as the ability to register and recall knowledge and information is quicker and easier then
than in later years. Also, when you get older, your responsibilities increase and you might find it
difficult to find enough time to achieve your goals.
14. Intention
You should be sincere to Allaah and make your intention to seek the reward from Him before
beginning memorising the Quran. You should feel that the Quran is there to guide mankind to
good. Allaah Says in the Quran (which means): "This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a
guidance for those conscious of Allaah." [Quran 2:2]
One should also realise the great reward of reading and studying the Quran, and there are many
Hadeeths which emphasise this point. Not only are the Muslims who read the Quran rewarded, but
those who listen to it are as well; Allaah Says (what means): "So when the Quran is recited, then
listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy." [Quran 7:204]
Reading and memorising the Quran is not difficult, and this fact was stated clearly in the Quranic
verse (which means): "And We [i.e. Allaah] have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance,
so is there any who will remember?" [Quran 54:17]
15. Avoid Ostentation
After memorising the Quran, avoid showing off and arrogance. Being given the ability to memorise
the Quran is a blessing from Allaah, and people might become proud of themselves to have
accomplished this task. Some people might then want everybody to know of their achievement and
thus be admired. This is a kind of Shirk (associating others with Allaah in worship) which is a
dangerous and punishable act. One should be thankful to Allaah as it is He who made it easy for
him to memorise and understand the Quran.
16. Loud
Try to read with a reasonably loud voice and listen to your reading. Avoid reading silently - this will
also help you to overcome laziness and tiredness.

17. Set an Amount to Read and Memorise

Set a certain amount of verses to read and memorise from the Quran at every session. Start with a
small amount and then increase gradually. Do not be driven by your enthusiasm as this will shortly
wear out. It is more important to persevere in memorising, no matter how small the amount is.
18. Manners
Once you have memorised the Quran, endeavour to acquire its manners, apply it in your life and act
upon it, as this obligation is more emphasised on those who know it by heart.

She became Hafiz in 53 days!

Personally I always wanted to think that men are superior to women over their memorization skills.
However, few news like this prove it otherwise.. I mean, what's going on?
Here we have a 20-year old girl, Tugba Kilic of Turkey, completes her Hifz of entire
Qur'an in just 53 days and gets highest degree graduation certificate! Subhanallah..
Obviously it is a blessing from Allah.
Here's google translated news (I've corrected it here and there):

Tuba memorized entire Qur'an in 53 days!

Tuba Kl, was able to memorize the Qur'an in 53 days with a special training. The special
techniques developed by her teacher Sheikha Hatice Sahin and also closely monitored by Religious
Authority of Turkey was implemented. Tuba also took advantage of memory techniques, motivation,
and morale support.
Nowadays many people want to be Hafiz, but fear being unable do or fear forgetting it or can not
decide. The Quran is complete and accurate, according to procedures that are considered difficult to
memorize, to be a hafiz is believed to have many years to work. Rifat Sahin Ankara Mualla 20-yearold girl student of Imam Hatib School, Tuba Kl, proved it possible to complete Hifz in just 53 days!

Which techniques are applied?
Surahs are ranked from easy to difficult. A page is divided by 3. First five rows, then the next 5, and
third 5 lines are memorized and then entire page is repeated. Then move on to the second page and
in that page, the same method of memorization is applied, after completion 1st and 2nd pages are
re-studied. In this way continue along the 10 pages. Once 10 pages (in a day) is complete, 3 people
listen to the recitation (for verification). If there is no error student passes to the second 10 pages
with the same technique. After memorizing the second 10 pages, student combines first and second
10 pages to make it a Juz. Now, entire Juz is to be listened and approved by 4 people.

Question and Answers regarding Hifz

Q - What is the best time to memorise the new lesson?
A - The best time to learn the new lesson is when one's mind is quite relaxed. Generally this is at the
time of Fajr (the morning prayer) and after the Magrib salh (the prayer after sunset).
Q - What is the best method to use in memorising one's new lesson?
A - One of the most effective methods to use in memorising the new lesson is as follows: Before
commencing the actual procedure of memorisation, read the new lesson at least three or four times.
This will prepare the student mentally for the lesson, as well as give him the crux of the lesson.
Secondly, memorise verse by verse (ayah after ayah). Do not precede to the next verse if you have
not memorised the previous one properly. Be very observant when memorising the lesson.

Q - How should one memorise a verse which is extremely long eg. Verse 282 of Surah Al-Imrn
(Chapter on the family of Imrn)?
A - If the verse is very long, it is most advisable to memorise it in portions, eg. By memorising small
portions of the verse. Once the entire verse has been memorised, one would be capable of reciting it
fluently.
Q - Is it advisable for students to memorise their lessons by listening to cassettes?
A - It is advisable for students to listen to their new lesson on cassette then to begin memorising it.
However, a more approved method is where the ustdh (teacher) himself recites the new lesson to
the student and thereafter the student memorises his lesson.
Q - Are there any special benefits in listening to cassettes by the student?
A - From the many special benefits here are a few:
Listening to these cassettes creates a greater urge and fervour to learn eg. A student loves to listen
to the recital of the Qur'n by Sheikh Abdul Rahman As-Sudais, now by him listening to the recitation,
this enhances the desire of learning.
The student gets more familiar with the method of recital.
The student tends to remember his lesson for a longer period of time.
NB. The effort of the student is still of utmost importance.
Q - Many students keep mentioning that certain chapters of the Qur'n are extremely difficult to
memorise eg. Surah As Safft. Please advise us.
A - These are merely statements of ignorance. Psychology proves when a person retains such
statements and takes them to heart, one is bound to find the lesson difficult to memorise. The clarity
of mind plays an extremely important role when memorising a lesson.
Q - Can you enlighten us on the importance of reciting one's lesson to the teacher before
commencing the actual process of memorisation?
A - The importance of reciting the new lesson by the teacher cannot be over emphasized. One is
definitely saved from many errors which could arise because of negligence. The student is made
aware of any weakness regarding the application of the laws of tajweed etc.
Q - How much of the new lesson should a student learn?
A - This depends mainly on the student himself. The amount varies from 1/3 of a page to 2 pages
and more.
NB. Quality is of utmost importance, not quantity.
Thus far most of the questions dealt with the 'new lesson' (sabaq). Hereunder follow questions
pertaining to the 'previous day's lessons', revision (dor, Muraj'ah) as well as miscellaneous advice and
noteworthy points.
Q - Students find great difficulty in remembering their previous day's lesson. What is the main cause
for this?
A - The main cause for students forgetting their previous day's lesson is negligence.

Hereunder follow some methods which will assist the students. As soon as the student recites his new
lesson to the teacher from memory, he must revise the very same lesson instantly at least 4 to 5
times. The very same method should be adopted before one learns one's revision (i.e. the repetition
of the new lesson).
Q - Students tend to make a lot of mistakes when reciting their revision. What is the cause of this?
A - Mistakes are unavoidable. It must be remembered that memorising the Qur'n takes different
stages eg. First the student has to memorise the new lesson, revise it etc. It is like a building. The
foundation has to be firm. Then only is it possible for the building to stand. Similarly, once the
student makes the effort to learn his new lesson (sabaq) correctly, his revision becomes easier.
To decrease the rate of mistakes, the teacher can set a target for the student eg. the student is not
permitted to make more than 3 or 4 mistakes in a surah (chapter).
Q - What is the recommended amount of revision that a student should recite daily?
A - The Qur'n consists of 30 parts, it would be highly recommended that every student recites at
least one part every day.
Q - How does a student remember those texts/ places in the Qur'n which are very often repeated?
(Mutashabiht)
A - One can only remember these places after excessive learning.
Q - Is it necessary for a student to learn from one print of the Qur'n or can he learn from different
prints of the Qur'n?
A - It is very important that a student learns from one print of the Qur'n, because the student
generally visualises his lessons. Now if he starts learning from different prints, very soon he is going
to be confused.
NB. This also leads to a lot of strain on the student's mind.
Q - Does one learn better by reciting audibly or inaudibily?
A - This depends mainly on the student. Some students prefer to learn aloud whereas others prefer
to learn in a low voice. The advantage of reciting aloud is that one tends to read more clearly and will
detect any mistake one makes easily.

Step by Step process to memorize the Holy Quran

Step by Step
Before actual memorization, it is necessary to choose a proper time, place and mental attitude:1. The Preferred Times For Memorization of Quran:
There are many preferable times for memorization: the time of sahr (before salat Al Fajr by a period
of time equal to the last fourth of the night) and this is a good and blessed time; and there is the
time after Salat Al Fajr until the time of Duha; and there is the time that is between salat Al Dhur and
Asr, if you do not want to sleep during this time; and there is the time that is before salat Al Maghrib
by an hour and a half, approx.; and there is the time between Maghrib and Isha prayers; and an
unlimited time possible to choose from is the time that you see yourself inclined to memorization of

the Holy Qur'an and revision of it. In other words, analyze your typical day. If you see that there are
certain regular periods where you are more peaceful than other times, or there is less demands upon
you at a certain particular time, then choose this time for Qur'an. These are the most beneficial times
as some of them are periods of peacefulness and contentment of the heart and restfulness, and some
of these time periods are not usually considered busy periods of the day for work or activity.
2. The Preferred Places For Memorization of the Quran:
There is no doubt that the best place for memorization of Qur'an and other acts of worship are the
houses of Allah (masjids) and after that places that are clean and far from filth (najaasaat--impurities
that break the wudu and are unlawful to make salat in the midst of) and far from work (business) and
disturbing sounds--that is, to sit in a clean and peaceful room that doesn't have distractions in it or
areas that attract your attention or noises that disturb concentration, or any machines going
(especially the T.V.). And if you cannot find such a room, then go to any other place on the condition
that it is clean and as previously mentioned above.
3. The Best Mental Attitude (condition) For Memorization of Quran:
Your mental condition must be settled and calm. [Translator's comment: I don't know why I did not
finish translating this section. Basically, your mind should be clear and at ease, not caught up in
sorting out problems or thinking of what else you have to do. You should be ready to concentrate
even if it is for only 15 minutes.]
Methods of Review
[Translator's comment: This was basically the same as methods of memorization from the very
beginning. Take it section by section and if you have memorized a large portion of Qur'an or the
entire Qur'an, you should review everything at LEAST once a month.
General Advice
This section is a gift from me to you -- advice related to the method of memorization of Qur'an and
revision and what that entails.
1- Be free from the 2 hadaths (ceremonial impurities), major and minor when you memorize and
revise Qur'an because of the greatness of what you are reading and reciting -- Allah's words -- and
make a realization of what Allah said :
Hajj: 32 which translates: "And whosoever honors the Symbols of Allah, then it is truly from the piety
of the heart."
2- Try to chose the most appropriate time and proper place to memorize and to revise.
3- Before memorization and revision you must seek refuge in Allah from the Shaitan by saying
"A'oudhu billahi AlSamieul Aleem min Ash-Shaitan Ar-Rajeem".
4- Try to feel or sense the greatness of the words of Allah, and their meaning when memorizing and
revising because this will cause good memorization.
5- It is good when reading a quarter or memorizing or revising it in a room or other place to read
with a moderate voice, not with high volume or extremely low volume, because reading aloud
increases the strength of your memorization; except if you are in a masjid, for example -- under that
circumstance you must read in a subdued voice (where you can hear yourself) so as not to disturb
others involved in worship or in his salat or reading Qur'an.
6- Try to improve your sound with Qur'an, carrying out the words of the Messenger of Allah, peace be
upon him [reported by Muslim] "Embellish the Qur'an by your voices".
7- If you can memorize by yourself do so, and if not, agree with one of your companions (brother or

sister in Islam) to memorize a particular juz so as to increase your activity.

8- YOU MUST MEMORIZE QUR'AN FOLLOWING THE RULES OF TAJWEED. [Translator's emphasis]
9- Try not to leave a quarter that you have memorized -- read it in salat as you memorize, and when
revising.
10- If you complete the memorization of a new quarter or new surah, do not move on to another one
until it is perfectly memorized.
May ALLAH make it easy for all of us

Easy and Fast way to memorize Quran

Assalamualaykum,
sent by Sister Umm Amarah;

Easiest Way to Memorize Al-Quraan
By our dear Shaykh: Abdul-Muhsin bin Muhammad al-Qaasim
Imaam and Khateeb of Masjid An-Nabawiyy ash-Shareef
------------ --------- ------All praise is due to Allah and may blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and his
family and companions, all together.
This way is excellent for strengthening memorization and its firmness (in the memory), quick
memorization and completing the Quraan with speed. And this way, with a demonstration with one
section (wajh- which is about eight ayaat) from Surah al-Jumu`ah, is what follows:
1-Read the first ayah twenty times

)
2- Read the second ayah twenty times

)
3- Read the third ayah twenty times

4-Read the fourth ayah twenty times

5- Read these four (ayaat), from the first of them to the last of them, to link between them, twenty
times.
6-Read the fifth ayah twenty times

)

7- Read the sixth ayah twenty times

8- Read the seventh ayah twenty times

)
9- Read the eighth ayah twenty times

10- Read from ayah the fifth ayah to the eighth ayah twenty times to connect them.
11- Read from the first ayah to the eighth ayah: twenty times to perfect this wajh
And like this, stick to this way in each wajh for the whole Quraan and do not increase in a single day
more than eight (ayaat) so that you do not increase over you what you have already memorized,
then the memorization changes and leaves your memory
V. If I wanted to memorize a new wajh the next day, how do I do so?
- When you want to memorize the next wajh the next day, then before you memorize the new wajh
by the way I mentioned to you, read from the first wajh (from the beginning) to the end of it twenty
times so that what you have already memorized becomes firm in your memory, then go over to the
new wajh on the way that I pointed to.
V. How do I bring together memorization and review?
- Do not memorize Al-Quraan without review because if you memorized al-Quraan one wajh at a time
until you complete the Quraan and then you want to return to what you memorized, you would find
yourself haven forgotten what you memorized. And the ideal way of bringing together memorization
and review, and you divide the Quraan into three parts; every ten ajza' (plural of juz') is a part. So
when you have memorized ten ajza' then pause (memorization) for a complete month for review and
everyday review 8 awjah (pl. of wajh)
-After a month of review begin with the memorization, memorizing one or two wajh, according to
your ability, and review eight awjah, until you have memorized twenty juz'. When you have
memorized twenty juz', pause the memorization for a period of two months for reviewing the twenty
juz', each day reviewing eight awjah.
When two months have passed on reviewing, begin memorization again every day one or two wajh,
according to your ability and review eight awjah, until you end the memorization of al-Quraan
completely.
-When you have completed the memorization of al-Quraan, review the first ten ajza' only, over a
period of one month, each day half of a juz', then go ' on to the twenty juz' over a period of one
month, each day half a juz' and read eight awjah from the first ten ajza', then go to reviewing the last
ten ajza' of al-Quraan over a period of one month, each day half a juz' with
eight awjah from the first ten ajza', and eight awjah from the twenty juz'.
V. How do I review the whole Quraan when I have completed this review?
-Begin reviewing the whole Quraan, everyday two juz', repeating it three times each day, and (like
this) you will complete the whole Quraan in two weeks. And by this way, you will have, in the course
of a year, perfected the Quraan completely. And follow this way for the whole year.
V. What do I do a year after memorizing al-Quraan?
-A year after perfecting al-Quraan and reviewing it, let your daily portion of al-Quraan till your death
be the portion of Allah's Messenger Sallallau `alayhi wa Sallam, for he used to portion the Quraan
into seven, meaning every seven days he would complete the Quraan. Aws in Hudhaifah
rahimahuLlah said: I asked the Companions of the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu `alayhi wa Sallam,
"How did you divide the Quraan?" They said" Three suwar (pl. of surah) , five suwar, seven suwar,
nine suwar, eleven suwar, and the Mufassil, from surah Qaaf until the end." Ahmad reported it
-This means from the first day he reads from Surah al-Faatihah to the end of Surah an-Nisaa. On the
second day he reads from Surah al-Maaidah to the end of Surah at-Tawbah. On the third day he
reads from Surah Yunus to the end of Surah an-Nahl. On the fourth day he reads from Surah al-Israa
to the end of Surah al-Furqaan. On the fifth day he reads from Surah ash-Shu`araa to the end of
Surah Yaaseen. On the sixth day he reads from Surah as-Saaffaat to Surah al-Hujuraat. And on the
seventh day, he reads from Surah Qaaf to the end of Surah an-Naas.

-And the Ulamaa' have summarized the portions of Rasulillah Sallallau `alayhi wa Sallam into their
words "Famee bi shawq" "
"which can be roughly translated as "My mouth is longing" or
"My mouth eagerly"
-So each letter in these two words is the beginning of one of the everyday portions Rasulillah
Sallallahu `alayhi wa Sallam . The letter 'Faa' in the word "Famee" is a symbol for Surah al-Faatihah
that shows that it is his hizb (portion) for the day that he begins with Surah al-Faatihah.
The letter 'Meem' in their word "Famee" is for the beginning of his hizb on the second day, beginning
with Surah al-Maaidah.
The letter 'Yaa' in their word "Famee" is for the beginning of his hizb for the third day, beginning with
Surah Yunus.
The letter 'Baa' in their word "Bi shawq" is for the beginning of his hizb on the fourth day, beginning
with Surah Banee Israa-eel, which is also called Surah al-Israa.
The letter 'Sheen' in their word "bi shawq" is for the beginning of his hizb on the fifth day, which will
begin with Surah ash-Shu`araa.
The letter 'Waa' in their word "bi shawq" is for the beginning of his hizb on the sixth day, which
begins with Surah was-Saaffaat (as-Saaffaat) .
The letter 'Qaaf' in their word "bi shawq" is for the beginning of his hizb for the seventh day, which
begins with Surah Qaaf to the end of Surah an-Naas.
As for the current way that the Quraan was divided into ahzaab (pl. of hizb), then this is from alHajjaaj bin Yusuf.
V. How do I distinguish between similar ayaat in al-Quraan?
- It is best to, when you come across two similar ayat, to open the mushaf to these two ayaat, see
the difference between then, and contemplate it, and put yourself to a test, and during your review
the part that difference repeatedly until you master the similarity between them.
V. Rules and regulations in memorization
1- Your memorization must be with a shaykh for correction recitation
2-Memorize everyday two wajh, a wajh after Fajr and a wajh after `Asr or Maghrib, and with this
way, you will memorize the complete Quraan perfectly (bi idhniLlah) in one year and you
memorization will be perfect, unless you increase in the memorization, for if you did, what you
memorized will weaken
3-Your memorization should be from Suran an-Naas to Surah Al-Baqarah because it is easier. And
after you memorize al-Quraan your review will be
from Surah al-Baqarah to Surah an-Naas
4-The memorization should be from a mushaf with the one print to be certain about the strength of
the memorization and quicker studying the places of the ayaat and the ends and beginnings of the
pages.
5- Everyone who memorizes (the Quraan) in the first two years loses some of what he memorized.
This is called the "Marhalatut- Tajmee`", roughly translated as the "Gathering Stage". So do not
worry about the Quraan leaving you or making many mistakes. This is a difficult stage of affliction
which shaytaan has a portion of to make you stop memorizing al-Quraan. So do not pay attention to
his whispers and continue memorizing it, for it is a treasure that is not given to just anyone...

Fazaaele Hifz

Dear Hafiz.......
by Madrasah Ta'leemuddin
Indeed, how greatly Allah Taala has blessed you. What a priceless treasure you have been granted.

The entire world, together with all its wealth and riches, cannot match even one verse of the Quran
you have in your heart, let alone the entire Quran. You have become a special person of Allah Taala
(a VIP in the true sense of the word) and a member of His "family." Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam) is reported to have said: "Verily Allah Taala has family members among the people." "Who
are is Family?" asked the Sahaaba (Radhiallahu Anhum). Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:
"The people of the Quran. They are the family of Allah and His special people!" Targheeb). Thus
you, Dear Hafiz, have become a special person in the sight of Allah Taala.
BEST
Furthermore, you are also among the BEST of people. This title comes to you from none other than
our most beloved Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), as he declared in the following hadith: "The
best among you is he who learns the Quran and teaches it" (Tirmizi).
INSIGNIFICANT WEALTH
The wealth in your bosom is more valuable than the sun, moon, the oceans and the entire universe.
Those who own gold and diamond mines or oil wells have NOTHING, indeed nothing, compared to
what you have in your heart. When all the gold and diamond mines and all the oil wells of the world
cannot compare to what you have, it is obvious that the one little flashy car, or the tiny little
"mansion", or the few million rands are totally insignificant when compared to the wealth of the
Quran-al-Kareem that is in your heart. What a wealth! Subhanallah! What a gift! Allahu Akbar! All
praise be to Allah Taala in the Heavens and on the earth.
PARENTS HONOUR
Yes, you undoubtedly have the greatest treasure in your bosom. The reality of this treasure will truly
become apparent in the Hereafter when, on the day of judgement, the PARENTS of the Hafiz will be
made to wear such crowns that will outshine the sun while the Hafiz himself will be permitted to
intercede on behalf of ten sinful Believers who were destined for Jahannum. Both these astounding
virtues are mentioned in the following Ahadith:
"He who learns the Quran and practices upon it, his parents will be made to wear a crown on the day
of Qiyamah, the brilliance of which will excel that of the sun if the same were within your worldly
houses. Hence, what do you think about the person who himself acts upon it?" (Abu Dawood).
"Whoever reads the Quran and memorises it, while he regards what it makes lawful as lawful and its
unlawful as forbidden i.e. he practices according to it), Allah Taala will admit him into Jannah and
will accept his intercession on behalf of ten such persons of his family who were doomed to the fire of
Jahannum." (Tirmizi).
While the great virtues are evident from these Ahadith, nevertheless both virtues are subject to a
precondition which is absolutely clear the condition of practicing according to the Quran-al-Kareem.
Thus, these rewards are not for merely memorising the Quran. Rather, they are promised to the one
who memorises the Quran and also acts according to the injunctions therein.
SELECTED
Remember, the memorising of the Quran is only possible with the help and assistance of Allah Taala.
Allah Taala selects who He wishes for the protection of His Pure Word the Quran-al-Kareem). Many
cherished the desire to become a Hafiz, but they passed on to their graves with that desire not
fulfilled. Allah Taala has specially selected YOU to receive this special favour and this great status.
Hence it must be appreciated and its rights must be fulfilled.
KNOWLEDGE OF PROPHETHOOD

Considering the superior status of a Hafiz, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has given special
instructions to him to adopt a superior conduct. Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (Radhillahu Anhu) reports
that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "Whoever reads the Quran secures the knowledge
of Prophethood between his ribs (in his bosom), though divine revelation is not sent upon him. It
does not befit the one endowed with the Quran that he be indignant upset) with those that are in
anger, nor should he indulge in any act of ignorance with those who are ignorant, while the Quran is
there in his bosom" (Haakim).
TRUE HAFIZ
Therefore when the Hafiz has gathered the knowledge of Prophethood in his bosom, his conduct
should be the conduct of the Ambiya (Alaihimus Salaam). The true Hafiz will therefore shun all evil
habits, he will never attend places of evil and sin and the company he keeps will be of those who are
pious. His character with his parents, Ustaads, family members, the elders, the young and with every
person will be such that the life of a true Muslim and of a bearer of the Quran will shine forth. He will
be clothed with piety and will be adorned with humility. His conduct will automatically reflect that he
is a different person, not just another fellow who cannot be distinguished from others on the street.
The Hafiz will thus respect himself not just his physical self but the Quran-al-Kareem that is in his
heart. As a result he will be bestowed with great honour in this world as well as in the Hereafter.

1. Golden Rules for Memorizing the Quran

Golden Rules for Memorizing the Qur'an*

1. Be Sincere
2. Correct Pronunciation and Recitation
3. Apportion the Daily Number of Verses to Memorize
4. Do Not Move to the Next Portion Till You Master the Present One
5. Stick to One Specific Copy of the Glorious Qur'an
6. Understand What You Are Memorizing
7. Do Not Move from One Surah to Another Till You Connect Its Beginning to Its End
8. Recite Frequently before Others
9. Follow Up Frequently
10. Pay Attention to Similarities
11. Seize the Opportunity of the Golden Years to Memorize
1. Be Sincere
One must clarify and declare his intention to get the fruit of this task. Thus, memorizing the Glorious
Qur'an must be observed only for the Sake of Allah and for winning His Paradise, Pleasure and His
Great Rewards. Allah the Almighty says {So worship Allah, making the religion His faithfully. Verily the
faithful religion is for Allah}. (Al-Zumar 2-3)

Also, He says {Say, Surely I have been commanded to worship Allah making the religion His;
faithfully}. (Al-Zumar 11)
Thus, there is no reward whatever for those who read and memorize it to be seen and over-praised
by others. Also, the one who recites it intending to win worldly gains only is sinful.
2. Correct Pronunciation and Recitation
The first step to take after purifying ones intention is to correct ones recitation of the Glorious
Qur'an. This will be possible only by listening to a skilled reciter or an excellent memorizer. The only
way to become knowledgeable of the Qur'an is to take it orally from others, as the Prophet himself,
peace and blessings be upon him, took it orally from Jibreel. Also, the Prophet, peace and blessings
be upon him, used to recite the Qur'an once before Gabriel during the month of Ramadan every year,
but he did it twice before him in the year in which he died.
Consequently, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, taught it to his Companions orally. The
generations that followed took it the same way from the earlier ones.
Thus, taking the Glorious Qur'an orally after an excellent reciter is a must. One should always correct
his recitation and should not depend on himself, even if he is knowledgeable of Arabic and its rules,
as there are in the Qur'an many verses that are in variance with the well-known rules of Arabic.
3. Apportion the Daily Number of Verses to Memorize
One who intends to memorize the Glorious Qur'an should specify the amount he can bear daily, be it
a given number of verses, one or two pages, or one-eighth of a juz one thirtieth part). Then, he
starts to repeat and repeat till he perfects his memorization. He should recite aloud, first to follow the
Prophetic Sunnah and second to perfect his memorization. Intoning the Qur'an is endeared to the
hearing and helps with memorizing, as it gets the tongue familiar with a given tune and an error is
easily identified when the usual tune varies in one way or another. When this happens, the tongue
feels the variation and stops to correct the recitation. Besides, reciting aloud was advocated by the
Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: The one who does not intone his recitation of
the Qur'an is not one of us. Narrated by Al-Bukhari)
4. Do Not Move to the Next Portion Till You Master the Present One
One who memorizes the Glorious Qur'an should not move to the next portion till he masters the
previous one. One way to perfect his portion is to make it his business day and night to recite it
during his silent Prayer and, in case he is leading the Prayer, in his aloud Prayer. Also, one should
recite it in the Sunnah Prayers and while waiting for the beginning of the Prayer. In this way,
memorizing the Qur'an will be easy and possible for everyone, even if one seems busy. This is
because one will not sit down just once to practice this. Rather he will listen to the instructor once,
then he will start repeating it himself during the times mentioned and in Fard (obligatory) and Sunnah
(optional) Prayers as well. If something prevents one from memorizing his due portion in the
specified day, he should not move to a new one portion till he has perfected his memorization of the
former.
5. Stick to One Specific Copy of the Glorious Qur'an
One factor that helps to master memorization is to stick to just one copy of the Glorious Qur'an. This
is because man memorizes things by sight as well as by hearing. The form of the verses and their
locations on the page of the Qur'an are stamped in ones mind because of the frequent repetition and
the act of looking at the copy itself. Thus, if one changes his copy or memorizes from more than one,
his memorization will not be so easy or good enough.
6. Understand What You Are Memorizing

One of the greatest aides to memorizing the Glorious Qur'an is to understand the verses and
recognize the relationship between them. Thus, one who intends to memorize should read some
explanations of the intended verses and should understand how they are related. He should also be
attentive as he reads to easily remember the verses afterwards. He should not depend solely on his
understanding of the verses; rather, the repetition should be the basis of memorizing. This is to
enable the tongue to read even in times when the mind is not wholly attentive. The one who depends
mostly on understanding is liable to forget and stop as soon as his mind is not attentive. This
happens mostly during long recitations.
7. Do Not Move from One Surah to Another Till You Connect Its Beginning to Its End
After memorizing a whole surah of the Glorious Qur'an, one should not move to the next till he has
mastered it perfectly. He should connect its beginning to its end, and his tongue should move with it
smoothly and easily without exerting his mind in remembering the verses and continuing the
recitation. Rather, his memorization should be as smooth as water and he should recite it without any
faltering whatever, even if he is not attentive to the meanings sometimes. It should be like the case
when one recites Al-Fatihah without any effort, and this, of course, is due to its being frequently
repeated and recited. Likening this to Al-Fatihah is something figurative, as no one will commit the
whole Qur'an to his memory just like it. The point is that one should try to fix the whole Surah in his
mind, connected and smooth, and not to move to the next till he has memorized it perfectly.
8. Recite Frequently before Others
One who memorizes the Glorious Qur'an should not depend only on his memorization. He should
always recite before another memorizer or even one who just follows along in a copy of the Qur'an. It
is preferable that that person be an excellent memorizer to notify the new memorizer with the things
he might forget or recite inattentively.
It is true that one may memorize something incorrectly and never notice it, even though he is looking
at the copy of the Qur'an because reading precedes sight. The memorizer may look at the copy of the
Qur'an and not recognize the faults location. Hence, reciting the Qur'an before others is a perfect
way to amend these mistakes and set ones mind always attentive.
9. Follow Up Frequently
The Glorious Qur'an differs from other materials intended to be committed to ones heart as it is more
fleeting from ones mind, as shown by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, By
Him in Whose Hand my life is! It runs away (is forgotten) faster than camels that are released from
their tying ropes. Agreed-upon)
As soon as one who memorizes the Qur'an leaves it, it flees from him and he rapidly forgets it. So,
one must follow up frequently and continuously observe in order to preserve it. The Prophet, peace
and blessings be upon him, said, The example of the person who knows the Qur'an by heart is like
the owner of tied camels. If he keeps them tied, he will control them, but if he releases them, they
will run away. He also said, Keep on reciting the Qur'an, for, by Him in Whose Hand my life is, the
Qur'an runs away (is forgotten) faster than camels that are released from their tying ropes.
(Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
This means that one who memorizes the whole Qur'an should read at least a whole juz per day, and
he should not exceed ten juzs per day. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, He who
finishes the recitation of the Qur'an in less than three days, does not understand it. Agreed-upon)
Through this frequent follow-up and permanent observation, committing the Qur'an to ones heart
can be kept free from forgetting.
10. Pay Attention to Similarities

The Glorious Qur'an has similarities in meanings, words, and verses, as Allah the Almighty says,
{Allah has sent down the fairest discourse - as a Book, consimilar (and) oft-repeated, whereat shiver
the skins of the ones who are apprehensive of their Lord; thereafter their skins and their hearts
soften to the Remembrance of Allah}. (Al-Zumar, 23)
It is a fact that the Qur'an has more than six thousand verses, around two thousand of which are
similar in one way or another. In some locations the similarity is exact, while in others there may be a
difference of just one letter or one or a few words.
Hence, one who memorizes the Qur'an should pay great attention to the similar verses. The more
one pays attention to these similarities, the firmer his memorization gets. One may find help in
reading the books that deal with similar verses. Foremost among these books are:
Durat Al-Tanzil wa Ghurat Al-Tawil by Al-Khateeb Al-Iskafi.
Asrar Al-Tikrar fi Al-Qur'an, by Mahmoud Ibn Hamzah Ibn Nasr Al-Karmani, and others.
11. Seize the Opportunity of the Golden Years to Memorize
The successful person is the one who seizes the opportunity of his early golden years from five to
nearly twenty-three. Mans memory during this period is in the best shape. Before five, one is too
young to pay attention to memorizing, and after twenty-three his faculty to memorize begins to
decline while his faculty of comprehension and understanding starts to increase. So, as much as
possible, one should use these golden years to commit the Qur'an to memory.
Committing anything to ones heart during this early age takes place very fast, while forgetting it
happens slowly. On the contrary, when man gets old he memorizes very slowly and forgets very
quickly. Thus, the Arabic proverb is perfectly true that says Learning in childhood is just like
engraving on stones, while learning in adulthood is just like drawing on water.
So, we should not waste these golden years and should try to commit the Glorious Qur'an to our
hearts. If we were unable to do so, it is better not to escape the opportunity in regards to our
children. May Allah grant us all success, and send blessings on our Prophet Muhammad, his family
and Companions as well.

Traditions of the Holy Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam

a. Uthman Radiallahu anhu narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: "The best
amongst you is he who learns the Qur'an and teaches it." (Bukhari)
b. Abu Saeed Khudri Radiallahu anhu narrates that the prophet of Allah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam
said: "Allah says: "If anybody finds no time for my remembrance and for begging favours of Me,
because he remains busy with the Holy Qur'an, I shall give him more than what I give all those who
beg favours of Me". The superiority of the word of Allah over all other words is like the superiority of
Allah over the entire creation. (Tirmizi)
c. Aisha Radiallahu anha narrates that the prophet of Allah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam once said: "One
who is well versed in the Qur'an will be in the company of those angels who are scribes, noble and

the reward." (Bukhari)
d. Abdullah ibn Umar Radiallahu anhu reports that the prophet of Allah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam
said: "On the day of judgement, it will be said to the man devoted to the Qur'an, 'Go on reciting the

said: "Undoubtedly through this book Allah exalts some people and abases others." (Muslim)
f. Ibn Masood Radiallahu anhu reported that the prophet of Allah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: "If
anyone recites a letter from the Qur'an, he will be credited with one virtue, and a virtue gets a tenfold reward. I do not say that Alif Lam Mm is one letter, but Alif is one letter, Lam is one letter and
Meem is one letter." (Tirmizi)
g. Ibn Abbas Radiallahu anhu reported that the prophet of Allah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: "He
who has nothing of the Holy Qur'an in his heart is like a ruined house." (Tirmizi)

Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: "He who does not recite the Qur'an in a melodious voice is not of us."
(Ab Dawd)
i. Abu Musa Al Ashari Radiallahu anhu reported that the prophet of Allah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam
said: "Retain and safeguard the Holy Qur'an in your memory. By the one in whose hands is my life, it
(the Qur'an) slips more quicker away from one than a camel from its fetters." (Bukhari & Muslim)
Narrations regarding our Pious Predeccessors

* Uthman Radiallahu anhu used to fast during the day and spend the whole night in salah apart from
getting a little sleep during the first third of the night. It is well known that he used to recite the
entire Qur'an in one rakat at a time.
* Qatadah Radiallahu anhu used to recite the whole Qur'an every three nights in the month of
Ramadhan but during the last ten nights, he used to finish the whole Qur'an every night.

Its authenticity one can never dispute, its food for a hungry man's mood, it is guidance for those who
seek the truth.
There are three important factors to take into consideration when memorising the Qur'an.
1. The new lesson (also known as sabaq or dars)
2. The previous day's lesson.
3. Revision (also known as Muraja'ah, dor)

Questions and Answers

Q - What is the best time to memorise the new lesson?
A - The best time to learn the new lesson is when one's mind is quite relaxed. Generally this is at the
time of Fajr (the morning prayer) and after the Magrib salah (the prayer after sunset).

Verse 282 of Surah Al-Imran
(Chapter on the family of Imran)?
A - If the verse is very long, it is most advisable to memorise it in portions, eg. By memorising small
portions of the verse. Once the entire verse has been memorised, one would be capable of reciting it
fluently.

Q - Is it advisable for students to memorise their lessons by listening to cassettes?

A - It is advisable for students to listen to their new lesson on cassette then to begin memorising it.
However, a more approved method is where the ustadh (teacher) himself recites the new lesson to
the student and thereafter the student memorises his lesson.

Q - Are there any special benefits in listening to cassettes by the student?

A - From the many special benefits here are a few:
* Listening to these cassettes creates a greater urge and fervour to learn eg. A student loves to listen
to the recital of the Qur'an by Sheikh Abdul Rahman As-Sudais, now by him listening to the recitation,
this enhances the desire of learning.
* The student gets more familiar with the method of recital.
* The student tends to remember his lesson for a longer period of time.
NB. The effort of the student is still of utmost importance.

Q - Many students keep mentioning that certain chapters of the Qur'an are extremely difficult to
memorise eg. Surah As Saffat.

It must be remembered that memorising the Qur'an takes different

A - The Qur'an consists of 30 parts, it would be highly recommended that every student recites at
least one part every day.

Q - How does a student remember those texts/ places in the Qur'an which are very often repeated?
(Mutashabihat)
A - One can only remember these places after excessive learning.

Q - Is it necessary for a student to learn from one print of the Qur'an or can he learn from different
prints of the Qur'an?
A - It is very important that a student learns from one print of the Qur'an, because the student

generally visualises his lessons.

Tippers!!!
As Salam Alaikum
As a Hafiz, there are a few things I would like to point out to you that may Insha Allah, help you out.
Of course there are day-to-day schedules and routines for memorizing the quran, as many of the
brothers have posted already. Memorizing certain amounts of pages and tests at the ends of Juz etc.
etc.
I think there are a few important things that you should know though.
Firstly, whatever that is to be memorized and is memorized can NEVER EVER be forgotten. I mean,
you cant just have a phase of memorizing Quran and just think that there is some Hafiz Alumni crowd
you will part of all of a sudden..lol.
Secondly, Quran has to be your priority. Not your parents, peers, loved ones, relatvies, friends or the
over popular girls and spouses, lol. It must be something you are only doing for the pleasure of
ALlah, a lot like fasting. You have to have this clear intention, that it is merely not for a worldly gain
but a gain in a step closer to Allah.
Third, while you memorize, always remember to go and revise all that you have already revised. Dont
try to finish quickly or hastly because of a competition or pressure from anyone, because it will
backfire. Always go steadily at your own pace and make sure whatever you memorize sticks into your
brain. Close all doors that it may find to escape. There is lots of work and more importantly, it is a
LIFETIME effort. To the moment you pass away, you are responsible for having each and every letter
of the quran you initially memorized, intact. So you have to implement a system of reading 10% of
what you have memorized each and every day, AT LEAST. So it is a cycle that repeats, you do 10%
everyday till you reach the end and then you go back and do it again and again. This is the BEAR
minimum. It is obviously recommended to boost this as much as you can fit into your schedule. The
Quran will leave you if you dont take care of it. Just imagine you get married and pay no attention to
your wife, she will leave with a snap of a finger.
Fourth, Pray to Allah that he make it easy on you to memorize and maintain the knowledge that he
blesses on you. Because when it comes down to it, it is truly a miracle that people are able to
memorize the Quran. A book of such text and without even being able to understand the language. It
is certainly from Allah and he will decide whom and who doesnt recieve this blessing. So always pray
to him, asking for his blessings.
Fifth, Find a teacher. It is a hundred times easier when a Hafiz or Alim is teaching you because they

will know and will have experience on how to go about doing so. It is hard in some situations, yes,
but it is definitely an asset.
Sixth, Listen to Quran cassettes, CDs, MP3s. This will give you an outlook on how people who have
devoted their liffe to Quran are pronouncing and saying each and every letter. My personal favourites
are Sudais, Shuraim and Matrood, but there are many more.
Seventh, Make sure each letter is given importance. All letters in the quran have their own individual
sounds and pronouncing methods. You need to learn Tajweed or the proper way of reading while you
are memorizing because if you leave it to after it may be too late.
Eighth, Never boast or think of yourself as a better muslim during or after you have memorized the
quran. This is because as a Hafiz, you carry the sacred words of Allah and it is your job to now make
sure that you are mere example of a good muslim. People will turn to you and look to you for
example and it is all part of the package, whether you like it or not.
Nineth, If some part seems really hard or troublesome to memorize, do not skip it. Keep trying to
memorize it and stay persistent. It may just be Shaitaan trying to draw you out of the memorizing.
Try to memorize at times like after Fajr or after Maghrib because these have been told to me by my
teachers that it is a better time to be memorizing. Also, sometimes, reading just a general translation
of an ayat may seem to help in memorizing the ayat. Weird but it works sometimes.
Tenth, After you memorize get a good night sleep and test yourself in the morning, sometimes this
will help your brain it fixture the quran into your brain.
I hope some or all of these points, help you in your question or concerns.
Before I finish off, I would like to give you a schedule of a day-to-day basis in memorizing the Quran.
These are the three things that you will need to do each day.
Daily Lesson : As much as you can do
Revision of the Juz you are on : About Half of the Juz normally
Revision of everything else you know : 1 Juz is recommended but Half Juz is the minimum
It may be tough but all things worth having are always TOUGH.
Walaikum As Salam

If I'm repeating something someone already stated then just take it as support for their
suggestion/testimonial.
I break down memorization of Qur'an into 3 things...
Ikhlaas (Sincerity). Commitment. Repetition.
The key to memorization is to hear it [recited properly and to mimick it].
The most effective way is with an instructor/hafiz guiding you and correcting you all the way.
There are other means as well.
I don't have the luxury of an Ustadh so I use audio recordings to mimick and learn proper
pronunciation from. In addition, reciting in a loud voice also helps.
http://www.reciter.org
This website is incredibly helpful.

It displays a page by page replica on your computer monitor. You can choose which verses to recite.
Additionally, you can choose how many times to have EACH verse repeated as well the verses as a
whole repeated. You can also choose which reciter to recite the chosen verses (Abdel Basit, Abdullah
Basfar, Al Hosary, Hodhaifi, and one or 2 more). The recitations are not the reciters' most elaborate
either. This is beneficial in variety of ways - easy to mimick in terms of intonation, simple rhythm to
follow, and pronunciation. These all help in memorizing more effectively.
What I do is set a handful of verses to be repeated between 3 and 7 times each (odd numbers
preferable). I read (at least once) and listen only. The other times I try to mimick and repeat through
hearing.
I took notes from this and made a portable means of recitation as well.
I've been chopping up each surah verse by verse. I make each track repeat the same verse 3 or more
times. One of the repetitions I edit to be quieter so when I actually recite I will hear my own voice.
This helps in correcting myself.
Also, with each verse on a seperate track I don't fall behind because if I'm bein slow I just hit repeat
on the verse (rather than go through the whole set or search for it).
This is nice cuz I just put it on my lil iPod shuffle and can take it anywhere.
As far as order...I've heard from several shuyookh and huffadh that a specific order isn't nessecary.
However, a general order will make memorization most effective. Start from the beginning of the
Qur'an or the end. Then work your way to the other end.
If Arabic isn't your first language starting from the back will indefinately be the fastest and most
effective way. You see similar words repeated more so than the introduction to new words. Where as
starting from Surah al-Baqarah you'll be thrown amidst a slew of new words verse by verse almost.
Some people also start from Juz 'Amma then go to the beginning and do the first Juz then go back to
the 29th. The shuyookh around here said that's fine. They just disagree with taking favor to certain
surah's or ayat and jumping around surah/ayat based on opinion.
Another tip is reciting aloud when ever you can (i.e. whenever it's permissable). Whenever I drive
alone I spend a good chunk of the trip reciting and trying to beautify my recitation. Make cd's of the
surah(s) or verses you are memorizing and listen to them in the car. (or just put em on your iPod or
mp3 player or whatever)
Additional means to aid in getting it engrained in your mind is reciting it (quietly) in silent prayers.
Dhuhr, 'Asr, all the Sunnah and nawafil prayers. This affords you a benefit that (if no one is following
you) you can take your time and if you make a mistake, it won't be embarassing or nerve racking.
If you can't learn tajweed formally (i.e. under someone of knowledge). Then make sure you hear and
copy recitations of known and respected reciters. I hear people who have alot memorized just from
read and reciting to themselves but they do not observe tajweed and in some cases mispronounce
outside of tajweed. I've heard that there is scholarly opinion that reciting Qur'an without tajweed is
like praying without wudu.
The Messenger (sas): "Whoever does not beautify the Quran (recite it melodiously and rhythmically)
he is not of us." (Reported in Saheeh Bukhari)
Also limit and remove idle things from your life. Get rid of music. I mean it's haram anyways. But if
you need more than that, when you memorize new music (lyrics and tunes) you slow and possibly
halt your progress of Qur'an. With permissable music, if you really need it, limit it - again, so you're
not memorizing unnessecary things. Sins affect our ability to understand and retain knowledge. So
clean up your act and repent! Furthermore, make du'a asking for forgiveness and for ease in

memorization.
Means to get it engrained in your heart insha Allah...
Learn the meaning and apply it to your life. Read translations, interpretations, tafaseer, anything you
can in relation to the surah or verses you are learning. Think about them. Sometimes I will write
about them, whether as my own interpretation or in relation to something I've witnessed or seen.
Your intention should be to memorize for Islamic reasons. You want to attain paradise, you want to
improve your understanding of the deen and of Allah, you want to be an aid to guiding people to
Islam, etc. Reasons should not be just to be imam or lead prayers or to recite in front of people.
Taking some (or all) of these things into account would insha Allah define your sincerity and
dedication to memorization so that Allah would make it as easy on you as possible.
http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/quran/memorizingquran.html
This site helped me reach conclusions on what helps as well. I've state much of what is on it but I still
suggest reading it.
Methods of Memorization
The author calls attention to the fact that the Holy Qur'an is divided into several divisions which are:
1) the juz or part
2) divisions of the juz into smaller sections like the hizb
3) and the division of the ahzab into fourths.
The author advises the memorization of Qur'an along these divisions. To begin with memorize the
smallest section and that is 1/4 of a hizb, then 2 fourths of a hizb (half a hizb), then 3/4 hizb, until a
complete hizb is memorized. The entire Qur'an can be memorized in this manner, by the help of
Allah.
As for the last juz, JUZ 'AMMA , he says that one fourth contains more than a surah, so in this case it
is best to memorize one surah and then another, with the exception of the shorter surahs at the end
of the juz , then he suggests memorizing two or three surahs at a time, depending on the person's
ability so as not to lose a whole day memorizing a very small surah.

9- Try not to leave a quarter that you have memorized -- read it in salat as you memorize, and when
revising.
10- If you complete the memorization of a new quarter or new surah, do not move on to another one
until it is perfectly memorized.

learn to memorize quran with http://www.learningquranonline.com

First of all, wed like to state that there is a great merit in memorizing the Quran and teaching it. The
Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, says in this regard: "The best amongst you is the one
who learns the Qur'an and teaches it." (Reported by Al-Bukhari).
Also Abdullah bin `Amr ibn al-`As quotes Allah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, as
saying: "It will be said to the one who had memorized the Qur'an [and acted upon it]: 'Recite the
Qur'an (ascending the levels of Paradise thereby) and do so slowly and melodiously just as you used
to recite slowly and melodiously in the world since your abode will be at the place where you finish
reciting your last verse." You see now that one earns tremendous reward in committing the Qur'an to
heart, acting upon it and conveying its message to others.
As regard your question, first of all, it's important to tell you that certain rules and methods should be
applied in memorizing the Quran so as to get the expected fruits. Thus, we would like to present
some of these rules which will assist you in memorizing the Qur'an, may Allah benefit all of us by
them. In doing so, we will first shed some light on two perquisites for the act of memorizing the
Quran and then elaborate on some practical steps to be followed.
A- Two Perquisites for the Act of Memorizing the Quran:
1- Having Pure Intention:
Whether in memorizing the Qur'an or doing anything for Allah, a most important obligation is to
purify the intention and correct the goal. Thus, one's concern to memorize Qur'an and preserve it
must be secured for Allah, the Sublime and Exalted, for gaining His Paradise and attaining His
Pleasure, and for acquiring the great rewards that are reserved for those who recite the Qur'an and
memorize it. Therefore, there is no reward for one who recites the Qur'an or memorizes it for
people's sake: to show off and to be heard of.
2- Having a Truthful and Firm Resolution to Memorize it:
A person should have such an intent when commencing the task of memorizing the Qur'an, in the
midst of it and even after it when one needs to return to what one has memorized in order to
preserve it in his memory. Without this firm resolution a person will treat the whole matter lightly, will
become tired easily and will not even be able to achieve his goal.
One of the ways a person develops a firm intent is to know the excellence of the Qur'an and to aspire
after the reward mentioned above, and yearn drawing close to Allah through that act of worship.
B- Practical Steps for Memorizing the Qur'an:
1- Correcting Pronunciation and Recitation:
The first step in memorizing the Qur'an is to correct the pronunciation. This cannot be fulfilled unless

one listens to a good and precise reciter or memorizer of the Qur'an.

The Qur'an cannot be learned without a teacher. Allah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon
him, was the most eloquent of all the Arabs. Yet, he learnt the Qur'an from Angel Jibreel (Gabriel)
orally. Also the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, used to recite the Qur'an to Jibreel
once in every year - in Ramadan. And in the year that he died, he recited it to him twice.
Likewise, Allah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, taught the Qur'an to his Companions
orally; and he heard it from them, after they had learned it from him, time and again.
Therefore, one is required to learn the Qur'an from a good reciter, to correct one's recitation on a first
basis. Also, one should not rely solely on oneself in learning the recitation of the Qur'an, even if one
is knowledgeable of the Arabic language and its principles. This is so because in the Qur'an there are
many verses that occur in a way uncommon in the rules of the Arabic language.
2- Adhering to a daily Limit for Memorizing the Qur'an:
One must set a daily limit for some verses of Surahs (Chapters) of the Qur'an that one wishes to
memorize. This limit should be reasonable and possible to fulfill. It varies in its amount from one
person to another.
One should resist the temptation to move to a new portion of the Qur'an before perfecting the
memorization of the current portion that agrees with the set limit. This is a disciplinary measure that
helps one concentrate on one thing at a time, reducing interruption, and enabling one to firmly
establish one's current portion in one's mind.
3- Continual Recitation and Revision:
Once one has corrected one's recitation and set one's daily limit, one should begin his memorization
process by continual recitation and repetition of one's daily portion.
The memorizer must occupy himself with this through the hours of the day and night. He should
recite it:
-in the Fard (obligatory) as well the Nafl (optional) prayers,
-while sitting in the Masjid (mosque) awaiting the Jama'ah (congregational) prayer,
-for a few minutes after the Jama'ah prayer,
-before going to sleep,
-while waiting for anything (bus, dentist, etc.),
-while riding a bus, car, etc.
In this way, it is possible for a person to practice his memorization even when occupied with other
matters, because one is not restricted to just one specific time for memorizing the Qur'an. And with
approach of night one will find that one's set limit is memorized and firmly established in one's mind.
And if something unusual happens to occupy the memorizer during the day, preventing him from
completing the set limit, one should not move onto the next portion of the Qur'an on the following
day. Rather, one should continue with what one had started the day before, until the memorization is
perfected.
4- Reciting in a Melodic Tone:
During memorization, one should recite the Qur'an in a melodic tone, beautifying the reading as much
as possible. It is important the one reads melodically because of the following reasons:
a) Melodic recitation conforms with the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
who used to recite the Qur'an in a melodious and tranquil manner.
b) It conforms with the Prophet's command when he said, "Whoever does not chant the Qur'an
(recite it melodiously) is not of us."
c) It is pleasing to one's ears, providing incentive to continue with the memorization.

d) It helps make one's memorization firm and strong. The tongue will always return to a specific tone
of voice, and would thus detect a mistake whenever the balance or harmony in one's recitation
becomes disordered. The reciter's tongue will not comply with him in making a mistake when he is
unmindful.
5- Using the Same Copy of the Qur'an (Mushaf):
A memorizer of Qur'an should have a specific Mushaf (copy of the Qur'an) from which he reads all the
time. A person memorizes using vision as he does using hearing. The script and form of the verses,
and their places in the Mushaf leave an imprint in the mind when they are recited and looked at
frequently.
6- Understanding Is the Way to Memorizing the Qur'an:
An important thing that greatly aids the process of memorizing the Qur'an is to understand the
meaning of the verses one is memorizing, and know how they are linked to each other. Thus the
memorizer should read the Tafsir (explanation) of the verses that he desires to memorize, and should
bring their meanings to mind while he is reciting them. This makes it easy easier for him to remember
them.
Knowing the meaning of the verses is extremely important for memorizing the Qur'an, and to
increase the rewards of reciting the Qur'an. However, one should not merely rely on this for
memorization. Rather, as explained earlier, the repetition of these verses should be the foundation.
He should repeat them many times, until the tongue can recite them easily - even if the mind drifts
away from the meaning. As for the one who relies upon the meaning alone, he will forget often, and
his recitation will be disrupted as soon as his mind wanders, which is a common occurrence with
lengthy readings.
7- Linking the Verses:
As one completes memorizing a full Surah, one should perfect it by connecting its verses together,
both in meaning and in the flow of his tongue easily through them.
One should be able to recite the verses without having to think or go through trouble remembering
them. Reciting these verses should become as easy for him as the flow of water. He should be able to
recite them without hesitation, even if his mind wanders away from their meaning.
When the verses are well linked and perfected, one should be able recite them almost as easily as
one recites Surat al-Fatihah. This only occurs through repeating these verses frequently and reciting
them often.
Thus, a memorizer should firmly establish a Surah that he is memorizing in his mind, with its verses
well linked together. He should not move to another Surah until he has fulfilled this in a very good
way.
8- Reciting to Others:
A memorizer should not rely on memorizing individually. Rather, he should test his memorization by
reciting the verses to a companion who knows them by heart, or who can follow from the Mushaf. It
would be most recommended that this companion be a precise memorizer himself - he would then be
able to alert him to possible subtle errors, as well as prompting him when he forgets or makes
mistakes.
It is very common for one to make mistakes in memorizing a Surah, without realizing it - even when
one looks at the Mushaf. Reading often races the eyesight; and one may overlook one's mistakes
while reading from the Mushaf. Reciting the Qur'an to a knowing companion is a means of avoiding
these errors and keeping one's mind constantly alert.

9- Constant Review of What Has Been Memorized:

Qur'an is different from any other material that one memorizes, whether poetry or prose. It quickly
evaporates from one's mind. Allah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "By Him in
whose Hand is my soul, it (the Qur'an) is more likely to escape than tied camels." No sooner would a
memorizer leave what he finished memorizing, even for a short while, than it starts slipping away
from him - he quickly forgets it! Thus, it is necessary for one to follow up to what one has memorized
in a constant and careful manner. In this regard, the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him,
said:
"Verily, the example of a possessor (in memory) of the Qur'an is like a possessor of tied camels. If he
watches over them carefully, he would keep them; if he lets them break loose, they would run away
from him."
This means that a Hafiz (memoriser) of the Qur'an should have an allocated portion that he
constantly reads every day. This portion should not be less than one thirtieth, and should not exceed
ten parts (of thirty) of the whole Qur'an, because Allah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon
him, said: "It would be difficult for anyone who recites the (full) Qur'an in less then three nights to
comprehend it."
Only with this constant revision, and consistent watch, one would retain what one has memorized of
the Qur'an and protect it from slipping away.
10- Watching for Analogous Sections of the Qur'an:
Various parts of the Qur'an resemble each other in meaning, wording, or repetition of verses. The
Qur'an consists of more than six thousand verses. Of those approximately two thousand carry some
sort of resemblance to others. The resemblance varies from total coincidence, to a difference in one
letter, a word or two, or more.
Thus a good reciter of the Qur'an should direct special attention to the verses that resemble each
other in wording. The excellence of one's memorization depends on this watchfulness in this regard.

1. A Grandmother Who Completed Memorizing the Qur'aan at Eighty two.

An Interview with Umm Saalih
A Grandmother Who Completed Memorizing the Qur'aan at Eighty-Two Years Old
As Read by Dr. Saleh as Saleh
Al-Hamdulillaah (All-Praise is due to Allah), the One Who said (what means): "And in truth We have
made the Qur'aan easy to remember; but is there any that remembers?" Surah 54: 32
Many all over the world memorize the Qur'aan, and it is not strange to see the youth memorizing the
Noble Qur'aan and an early age. Al-Hamdulillaah, the One who made the Qur'aan easy for
remembrance, had made it easy for Umm Saalih age 82. In an interview with Umm Saalih, she was
asked the following questions:
Q1: "What was the reason that drove you to memorize the Qur'aan after so many years?"

She said, "I always hoped to memorize the Qur'aan from the time I was young. My father always
used to invoke Allaah for me to become one of the memorizers of the Qur'aan, like himself and like
the elder brothers of my family who memorized it. So I memorized in the beginning about three parts
and then after I completed the age of thirteen, I got married and became busy with the household
and the children. After I had seven children, my husband died. They (the children) were all young so
I took the time to raise them and educate them, and then after they grew up and got married, I had
more time for myself. Therefore, the first thing I directed myself to focus upon was the Qur'aan.
Q2: "Tell us about your journey with the Noble Qur'aan."
She said, "My younger daughter was going to high school and she was the closest of my children to
me and the most beloved, because she stayed with me after her older sisters got married and got
busy with their lives, and because she was a quiet girl, upright, loving, and good. In addition, she
was interested in learning the Noble Qur'aan, and her teachers encouraged her.
Furthermore, she was very enthusiastic and always told me of many women who were driven by this
great motivation to memorize the Qur'aan, and this is where I started."
Q3: "Tell me about your way of memorization."
She said, "We assigned ten verses (meaning her and her daughter who was going to high school). So
each day after Asr, we used to sit together. She reads and I repeat after her three times. Then she
explains the meaning to me, and after a while, she repeats that three times. On the next morning,
she repeats them to me before she goes to school.
She recorded also the recitations of Ash Shaykh al Husary, Rahimuhullaah, repeating each verse three
times and thus I continued to listen most of the time. Therefore, the next day we would go to the
next ten verses if my memorization was good. Otherwise, we would postpone taking additional verses
until the day after. Moreover, we assigned the day of Friday to review the memorizations of the entire
week. And this was the journey from the beginning."
Then she said, "Over four years and a half, I memorized twelve juz" according to the way I described
to you. Then this young daughter got married. When her husband knew of our task concerning the
memorization, he rented a house close to me, close to my house, so that he could allow the
continuation of the memorization. In addition, he, May Allah reward him used to encourage us and
sometimes sit with us listening, explaining and teaching.
Then after three years of her marriage, my daughter got busy with the children and the household
and our schedule was interrupted, but that did not make her give up. To the contrary, she sensed
that my eagerness for the memorization was still established so she looked for a special good teacher
to continue the journey under her supervision. So, I completed the memorization by the success of
Allaah and my daughter is still working to finish the memorization of the Glorious Qur'aan. She has a
little left, In Shaa Allaah Ta'aala.
Q4: "This motivation of yours, did it have an effect on other women around you?"
She said, "It really had a good strong effect. My daughters and stepdaughters were all encouraged
and worked on learning and teaching the Qur'aan to their children and learning it themselves.
Q5: "After finishing the Noble Qur'aan, don't you think about working on memorizing hadith?"
She said, "Now I have memorized ninety hadith and In Shaa Allaah I will continue the journey. I
depend, in my memorization, upon the tapes and upon the Qur'aan radio station. At the end of each
week, my daughter comes and checks for me the memorization of three hadith, and I am trying now
to memorize more.

revision and what that entails.
