QUESTION 1 [8 + 12 = 20 marks]

(a)

A balanced three-phase Y source with acb sequence drives a Y-connected three-phase

load with impedance of 10+j20 per-phase. The load voltage at its B-phase is found to
be 5025 V. If the impedance of the source and the line connecting the source to the
load are 5+j6 and 2+j4 per-phase respectively, calculate

(b)

(i)

The line currents

[4 marks]

(ii)

The source voltages

[4 marks]

The load current at c-phase of a balanced Y- system is measured to be 6.2560 A. The

system has a load impedance of 6+j12 per-phase and line impedance of 875 perphase. Given that the system is in positive sequence, obtain

(a)

Based on Figure 1 where Zk = 12 + j12 and Zm = 10- 20 ,

(i)

If Vs = 15030 V, calculate currents I1 and I2.

[13 marks]

(ii)

If it is found that I1= 4.95- 45 A and I2 = 2.1280 A, determine the energy

stored in the magnetically coupled coils of j10 and j8 at time, t = 0.25s when
the voltage source supplies cosine wave with frequency, of 4 rad/s. [7 marks]

(b)

Determine the transfer function H, where H is defined as the circuit voltage gain
Vo/Vi.

[6 marks]

Then identify the type of filter this circuit network represents.

[4 marks]

A voltage signal is to be filtered out so that it can only be allowed to pass within a certain
frequency range only. Taking resistor value R = 5 , design a passive bandpass filter that
has a center frequency o = 500 rad/s and bandwidth B = 50 rad/s. Your design should
include:
(i)

Calculations to determine suitable values for other circuit components used for
the filter and its associated half power frequencies.

[6 marks]

(ii)

Circuit diagram of the filter using the values obtained in (i).

[2 marks]

(iii)

Sketch of both ideal and actual frequency response of the filter.
