Dear Members,
Welcome to the April edition the month with our Thai traditional New Year Songkran Festival. I hope you will enjoy
the long holiday!
First of all, I would like to report a remarkable event whereby the General Committee (represented by Maj. Pansuang Xumsai
Na Ayudhya and Mr. Peter Burke) were honored to participate in welcoming H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on
the occasion of her private visit to Ban Khlong Takhian Chai Border Patrol Police School in Wang Nam Yen District, Sa Kaeo
Province on Friday, 20th February 2015. In this regard, the Club as the fund supporter for a nursery building of Ban Khlong
Takhian Chai Border Patrol Police School was granted an audience to H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
On the sporting front, I would like to highlight as follows:

The Martial Arts Section held its Annual Party on Friday, 20th March 2015 at the Henri Dunant Hall.
Participants enjoyed Aikido, Ballroom Dance and Line Dance shows on the stage, including attractive raffle prizes.

The RBSC Oscars; Tennis Night on Saturday, 21st March 2015 at the Henri Dunant Hall was another
impressive event to mention. Members were amused by the fantastic performances which showed team spirit and
collaboration of performers and also excited by the lucky draw prizes.

The RBSC Billiards Section will organize its 1st Inter Club Snooker 6 Red Invitation Tournament, with 6 teams
participating, namely Royal Selangor Club, Singapore Cricket Club, Penang Sports Club, Crown Property Club, the RBSC
and the RBSC Polo Club on Saturday, 4th April 2015 at RBSC Billiards Room.
The Entertainment Committee held two events, i.e. The Chill Night by The Whats Abb Band & Patchara Dila on
Wednesday, 25th February 2015 at the Polo Club Air Bar, and the Special RBSC Club Night by Analog Band on Saturday,
14th March 2015 at the RBSC Air Bar.
On a final note, I would like to encourage you to support the blood donation campaign which will take place on Tuesday, 28th April
2015 at the Henri Dunant Hall to make merit in celebration of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorns 60th Birthday Anniversary.

PERSPECTIVE

GMs Perspective
Recently the Club has embarked on a number of new initiatives for staff training in a variety of differing fields and
subjects, many of these courses are in-house training sessions and some are reliant on outsourcing specialist instructors to
conduct courses. The priority in many aspects of our training always features health and safety bringing about the obvious
benefits for participating individuals in developing their knowledge and skills, but also the sense of pride and team
building these types of courses can instill. I am always delighted to award their certificates of competence and witness first
hand their pride and awakened motivation.
We are tidying up an area of the Verandah outside of the Dining Room by relocating the bakery production equipment
into the Henri Dunant Hall kitchens which frees up this space to accommodate the fast food preparation and service from
the Verandah. There are many benefits to relocating this expanding outside kitchen into a purpose built controlled kitchen
environment, as well as providing additional dining seating with a more presentable ambience befitting our Club atmosphere.
The Club will be shortly carrying out a review of the RBSC souvenirs with a view to refresh and expand our current range.
We invite and welcome any ideas or suggestions from Members to include in our review.
Management would like again to sincerely thank those Members that contribute to the Clubs suggestion boxes, all
remarks are acknowledged in our centralised book with appropriate action and follow-ups recorded with a view to
continually improving our service, facilities, quality and performance.

RBSC Receives H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri

On 20th February 2015, The RBSC General Committee
Members and management on behalf of the Club, as the
fund supporter for the nursery building of Ban Khlong
Takhian Chai Border Patrol Police School, participated in
the receiving of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn
for the occasion of the H.R.H personal duty to visit the
Border Patrol Police School projects in Sa Keao Province.

HOTEL PARTY
NEW RECIPROCAL CLUB FOR QI-GONG
An agreement between RBSC and RBSC Polo Club was
recently established with the prestigious Colombo Swimming
Club in Sri Lanka. Members visiting the country can use the
CSCs facilities for up to 14 days a year without paying any
subscription fees. Contact the Clubs Membership office for
more information on obtaining an introduction letter. CSC has
swimming, tennis, badminton, a gym and many other sporting
facilities available. There is also

It was a great party that showed Qi-Gong Members
coming together as a family - a big and warm family.
Importantly, the Section would like to thank Khunying
Wanna Sirivadhanabhakdi who always supports the Qi-Gong
Section and all Qi-Gong Members.

DISCOVERING
THE BILLIARDS SECTION

The Billiards Room, and by extension the Billiards Section,

is unknown quantity to many Members of RBSC. While the
sport often times gets associated with some seedy stereotypes,
those are misnomers that are simply untrue. Popularity for
both billiards and snooker is at an all-time in Europe and
China with players like Ronnie OSullivan dazzling the
world with great skills. Popularity in Thailand, however, is

dwindling. With no truly great Thai players, the countrys

interest in the sport has waned. RBSC is one of the few places
in Thailand continuing the sports grand tradition.

Stepping into the RBSC Billiards Room is like stepping back

in time. The magnificent wood, the chalk boards, the bowtie wearing attendants, it feels like it would be the perfect
location for a scene in the hit television show Mad Men.
Everyone craves vintage style and the RBSC Billiards Room
is truly a place that is authentically vintage.
Its a shame most people neglect this room and sport at
RBSC. The Billiards Section carries on the games proud
legacy at RBSC, but it has been hard to get new Members
to turnout. Members who pass by are not able to see what
is going inside and are therefore less likely to open the
door to see inside the world of billiards. Even if they come
in they might not stay for long.

Members cant see inside the Billiards Room and even

when they do come inside they see that it is kind of dark. For
those who dont understand the game, this can be curious,
RBSC Billiards Section chairman, Khun Virapol Kornsritipa,
said. Once you start playing and learn about the game, you
understand why it needs to be so dark. Snooker and billiards
are games that require focus and concentration.
It is these two factors that make the sport so unique. In a
world where focus and concentration have become a lost
art, playing billiards or snooker can help teach you these
important traits. Since it is a mental sport, the playing field
is level. Strength, size and speed are irrelevant. Anyone
can become good.

COMING UP

The Billiards Section hosts three major events each year to go along with Interports, friendly matches and Club-sanctioned
tournaments. The first of these is the Interclub Snooker 6 Red Invitational being held on 4th April at RBSC. Formerly known
as the Tri-Nations, the format has been tweaked to make it better for the participants.
We decided to make the tournament and invitational tournament so every club did not feel obligated to attend. Things happen
and sometimes it will be impossible for a team to make it. This makes it more flexible for everyone involved, Khun Virapol
explained. We also made it a one-day tournament. Two-day events are probably too long as the teams that dont win on the
first day dont really want to play on the second day. It is easier on everyone to do one day.

Club, Royal Selangor Club, Polo Club and RBSC will make
up the field at the tournament this year. The spirit of the
competition is more social than competitive as the clubs have
been playing snooker against one another for decades.

The 8th Sattamitr Teams Snooker Tournament where teams

compete for the prestigious HRH Princess Maha Chakri
Siridhorn Cup takes place in May. It is one of the biggest
tournaments of its kind in Thailand featuring the best local
teams. In November, the Sangsom 6 Red Tournament takes
place. This is an event that has increased in popularity
over the past few years as snooker players view it as a
chance to really test themselves.

One myth that can be dispelled is that billiards players at RBSC dont want new players to come out and give the sport a try.
The fact is they encourage everyone with an interest in the sport to come in and give it a shot.
We have great facilities and staff here that can help get you started playing. It is actually pretty easy, Khun Virapol
noted. We are all friendly guys and like to see new people come in and give it a try. Snooker can be hard to pick up right
away but you can start with billiards which is easier.

The Billiards Room at RBSC is open every day from 10am to 9pm. It features four tournament quality snooker tables
and a billiards table for use. There is also equipment available for first timers to get started and friendly staff on hand to
answer questions and teach you the rules.

UNFORGETTABLE
RBSC TENNIS NIGHT 2015 OSCAR NIGHT
(From the RBSC Tennis Section)

The aim of the new, young generation

of the 2014-2015 Tennis Committee
has been to create a complete unity of
the Tennis Section by accentuating the
importance of family and taking a new
approach to tennis by giving players of all
caliber and ages opportunities to join in
fun and happy tennis.
The Tennis Section boasts six hard
courts, three of which are indoor, and
10 grass courts catering to players
whose ages range from 5 to 80 from
7.00-21.00 hrs every day.
The RBSC Tennis Committee decided
to adopt an Oscars Night theme to its
annual Tennis Night on 21st March. The
Henri Dunant Hall at RBSC was given a
spectacular makeover for Oscar Night,
complete with the Clubs tennis players
dressed up to the hilt as Oscar recipients
on the famous red carpet! The atmosphere
was electric and the goal was to entertain
and show the Committees appreciation of
the Clubs very young to the ageless active
tennis Members.
During the evening, there were
presentations of prizes to the winners
and runners-up of all the Grass and Hard
Court Championships whose ages ranged
from 6 to over 70 years young. The entire
Oscar evening was spiced with shows
from New York, New York; medleys from
Oscar Films and the Sound of Music.

The performers were none other than our

tennis-playing Members who showed that
their dazzling prowess was indeed not
limited to only the tennis courts!
Henri Dunant Hall was magically
transformed for the occasion, complete
with a red carpet, graced by ravishing and
dashing Oscar stars in sparkling gowns and
black ties. To add more fun to the evening,
Hollywoods superheroes provided hilarious
entertainment throughout the Hall.
Chin Kampanatsanyakorn, the Chairman of
the Tennis Committee, said that everybody
was astounded by the sight of all the Gold
and Silver Oscars holding tennis rackets
lined in front of the stage. There were over
200 of them. This was an embellishment
specially designed for the evening not
found anywhere else and made all the prize
recipients proud to be holding!
However, the highlight of the evening
was the warm welcome extended to
Thailands and RBSCs legendary players
who honoured us with their presence to
receive the Lifetime Achievment Awards:
Dr Suteerapun Karalak, Khun Siri Siributr
and Dr. Choompol Vongprateep.
There were numerous other awards,
namely the Most Adorable Junior, the
Most Active Junior Player of the Year,
the Rising Star of the Year, the Most
Dedicated Parent of the Year, Coach of

the Year as well as Custodian of the Year.

There were also other awards accorded
to a variety of players, such as the Best
Topspin Player of the Year, the Best Drop
Shot Player of the Year and the Footfault
Player of the Year, to mention a few.
This unusually spectacular tennis evening
signifies another successful event
organized by the RBSC Tennis Section.
It was the result of a team effort by both
the Tennis Committee and the Ladies
Tennis Sub-Committee, along with all
the staff and coaches. And last but by
no means least, it was without doubt
the full participation of our tennis-playing
Members who played a major role in the
integration of the Clubs tennis unity.

TENNIS HOST
GUESTS FROM HK
The RBSC Tennis Committee hosted the Ladies Recreation
Club from Hong Kong for a friendly event on 31st January.
A small group of six male players travelled along to partake
in the fun event which ended in a victory for RBSC. The final
score was 7-4. Afterwards, the LRC team was treated to a
lovely dinner to cap off the evening.

PARTY TIME FOR JOGGING SECTION

The weather was clear and participation was great as a group of RBSC and RBSC Polo Members gathered at RBSC Jogging Track on
the afternoon of 12th February. After the group photograph was taken in front of a big colorful banner specially made for the occasion,
the participants took off on the 3,500 m. walk and jog. RBSC and RBSC Polo Members, Members of the General Committee and staff
from Sports Division all ran in the event. At the end, a handsome Jogging Towel was handed to everyone as a souvenir.
All Members were invited to the Annual Party at Henri Dunant Hall after the walk and jog. The Jogging Section and RBSC
Qi Gong & Yoga Sections were co-organizers of the party.
Everything was well prepared including food, drinks, music,
shows on the stage and door prizes. There were 133
Members who registered for the 3,500 m. walk and jog and
over 205 guests at the Annual Party. It is hoped that more
Members will join our future activities. The RBSC Jogging
Section thanks everyone for their warm co-operation and
wishes to see you again next time.

FAMILY FUN RUN/FUN

WALK AND JAZZ
The RBSC Polo Club Jogging Section held its Family Fun Run/
Fun Walk and Jazz at the Jogging Track on 7th March just before
the sunset. There were 94 joggers altogether including children
and Members over the age of 80. Everyone joined in the walk
and jog and finished their target of five to 10 laps. It was fun
and there were fitness activities for the families and friends plus
refreshments and finger foods. Members enjoyed the rhythm of
Cool music from the live band. There was the presentation for
the Certificate of Completion to 31 active jogging Members who
completed 500, 1,000, 2,500 and 5,000 laps in the last past year.
The RBSC Polo Club Jogging Section wishes all Members good
health and is looking forward to more runners on the track.

YOU CAN DO IT!

On 22nd February, five RBSC Polo Club runners joined the 9th Tokyo Marathon, one of the
six world marathons. There were more than 35,000 runners from over 100 countries that
participated in the event. Two of the Clubs Members completed their very first marathon.

- David Lin finished with the time of 3:58:58

- Sittichoke Thanavatik finishedwith the time of 4:52:02

There other runners also achieved their targets.

- Thiraphong Chansiri finished with the time of 4:18:33

- Vorathep Tantivorawong finished with the time of 5:01:11
- Tharin Keeree finished with the time of 5:01:12

Completing a marathon is challenge but you can do it! The time doesnt matter, only the distance.

GOLD AT UNIVERSITY
GAMES
Heartiest congratulations to the Clubs equestrian,
Nai, Thitapa Worawan Na Ayudhya, for winning the
gold medal in the Team Show Jumping category at the
42nd University Games or Nonsee Games at Kasetsart
University Kampangsan on 22nd January. She represented
Chulalongkorn University at the event.

It has been a landmark year for RBSC tennis community. We

were proud to present the first ever Juniors Tennis Grass
Court Tournament! The tournament was held on March 7th.
A total of 16 boys and two girls partook in this event. Prior
to this year juniors could only take part in the tournament
on the hard court, however this event was scheduled as
part of the RBSC Tennis Committees vision to create a
well-rounded atmosphere for fostering juniors to excel in the
future. RBSC is blessed with a rare opportunity to have so
many grass courts in the club; therefore, juniors of the next
generation should be able to take advantage and play on
grass as well. We look forward to having higher participation
rate of juniors for the event to rebuild our Tennis Committee
for the new generation in the years to come.

There are free instructional DVDs on Qi Gong available
to interested Members at the Sports Section of RBSC.
The video was created by a RBSC Member and features
demonstrations and explanations to help Members
practice Qi Gong at home any time.

RBSC YOUTH LEARN SPORTS

AT LATEST CAMPS
The first session of sports camps at RBSC
took place in March. The camps offered
the sons and daughters of Members a
great way to stay active during the school
break. The one-week camps have lots of
different activities for the young ones giving
them a place to learn valuable sporting
and social skills.
The youngsters had the opportunity to
learn many different sports including
badminton, basketball, swimming, golf,
table tennis and many others. It gave them
a chance to learn the basic of new sports
and pick up important knowledge should
they wish to carry on any of the games
they learned at camp.
There was also a chance for the young ones to learn more about
sportsmanship, winning and losing with dignity and fair play during
the sport camps at RBSC. All of this plus a chance to spend time
with old friends and make new friends at the Club meant the latest
sports camps were a rousing success with another great turnout.

Analog still sounds great

The Analog Band brought their unique sound to the RBSC
Air Bar on 14th March for the latest Special Club Night.
Members were treated with a night of great tunes from this

Kung Fu Party
The Martial Arts Section hosted its Annual Party on 20th March
at the Henri Dunant Hall. This was a chance for all of the
Sections fun activities to come out and show off what they have
been working on over the past year. The Martial Arts Section
has many fun things for Members to take part in.
Those in attendance enjoyed Aikido, Ballroom Dance and
Line Dance shows on the stage done by Members. Each
performance offered something unique and was very popular
with the crowd. Also popular was the lucky draw which

sports would be like saying kua kling is
a little spicy. Its a bit of understatement.
The world of sports plays a big role
in his life. He watches, plays and has
become involved with sports marketing
in Thailand. He isnt some jock though.
He is a savvy entrepreneur hoping to
make a name for himself.

There is only one sport that Khun
Pranai Phornprapha doesnt really enjoy
watching. Its baseball. I went to a
baseball game when I was in America,
and I didnt really like it, he points out.
It was really slow. There isnt enough
action. It is kind of boring.
He isnt the first person to be turned off by
baseballs methodical pace. Instead, he
prefers action and athleticism. He is quick
to proclaim his admiration for basketball.
The NBA is a favorite of Khun Pranai even
if it can harm his work productivity.
I enjoy watching basketball. I dont
have a team I root for. I just like
watching the best players. They can do
some amazing things. The problem is
the NBA games start in the morning.
Sometimes I will start watching them
at work and that isnt always good for
being productive, he confesses.
NBA League Pass allows subscribers to
watch any game at any time. The time
difference between the US and Thailand
means games tip-off at 6am local time
and the late games will end around
noon. With so many great players and
the ability for anything to happen on any
given night, it is hard to not watch even
if work does get in the way.
I like watching the Golden State
Warriors. They are a great team to
watch with the Splash Brothers,
Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson,
playing so fast, he says. Then you
always want to watch someone like
Russell Westbrook1. He is just a freak.
Its incredible to watch him play.
Khun Pranai is clearly a knowledgeable
basketball fan, but his passion is

football. Specifically, his passion is

Arsenal FC. The London-based club
has been the apple of his eye since
childhood. Make no mistake, he is not
some glory hunter, but a fan who truly
supports the team.
When I was growing up everyone
seemed to support Manchester United

or, especially in Asia, Liverpool. Part of

the reason I chose to support Arsenal is
that I wanted to be different, Khun Pranai
explains. The main reason I follow Arsenal
is their style of play2. They play really
attractive football. I really liked watching the
team play because it was different.
As an adult, he has been able to

travel to England to see them play. He

has also taken in a few other soccer
matches during his time there including
an uncomfortable experience watching
Manchester City play Arsenal at the
Etihad Stadium. I was at that game on
business as a guest of Manchester City.
It was difficult because I couldnt cheer
for Arsenal. They won the game which

was great, but I couldnt celebrate at all.
It was kind of awkward, especially when
Arsenal scored because my natural
instinct was to cheer, he recounts.
There has been an influx of Thai
influence in English football. Leicester
City and Reading are owned by Thais
and several Thai companies have
notable sponsorships with clubs such
as Singhas deal with Chelsea3. It would
be natural to think that as a young
entrepreneur Khun Pranai might one
day eye owning his own soccer club.
Football teams are not good business,
he says definitively. Maybe if you can
combine it with branding it can work
out. I think King Power and Leicester
have been successful and the same
with Everton and Chang. You have to
have a branding element for it work. Im
super far away from thinking about that
though.
The branding element is huge in the
sports world. It is something that Khun
Pranai has been caught up in over the
years. I bought a Sega Dreamcast
and JVC television because they
were shirt sponsors of Arsenal4 when
I was younger. Neither was the best
investment in hindsight. The brand
loyalty that can be created by sponsoring
a football team is good business. I have
learned a lot about this and think sports
can be a very powerful marketing tool.
It should come as no surprise to learn
that Khun Pranai and his partners
have ventured into the field of sports
marketing. One of his most creative
endeavors is The Music Run5, a unique

marriage of music and running by
turning it into a social event.
Almost everyone listens to music when
they run. The Music Run is an event
designed to be different. We want to
combine the love of running with the
love of music people have, Khun
Pranai details. Its a fun event and
one that we hope will keep growing.
Last year we did Bangkok, Jakarta and
Yangoon in 2014 and we will return
to those cities this year. Singapore is
coming up in April and Hong Kong and
Taiwan will also happen in 2015.
The idea behind The Music Run is simple.
Its to create a total musical immersion.
Each kilometer is dedicated to a unique
genre of music. The runners then vote on
which songs will be played using social
media during the build up to the run. The
course is lined with top quality speakers
that play the top songs selected by the
runners. After the run, there is a concert
for everyone to keep the party going.
Sports clearly play a big role in Khun
Pranais life, but he does take a step
back from that world for his proverbial
day job. He is Managing Director
of Siam SBrand6, a Japanese auto
body repair and paint franchise.

prevented this.

car in traffic, he muses. Everyone
loves a supercar, but I want one that is
comfortable to be in.
It is that kind of understated creativity
that has allowed him to create a name
for himself despite coming from a
famous family. He always wanted to
do his own thing growing up. He was
allowed that freedom and he will always
be grateful to this his parents for that.
I have always wanted to prove myself. I
never wanted to rest on my family name,
he says. They never forced me to do
anything. I have been able to pursue my
interests. They have always supported
me, and I have to thank them.
With countless interests and many other
projects in pipeline, it seems as if Khun
Pranai is just getting started. He might
even be more successful than Arsenal over
the next decade, but that is a conversation
he would probably wish to avoid.

Dear Golfing Members,

We are now well into our hot season and unavoidably entering the rainy season in a few months. We would like
members to pay particular attention to the unexpected and variable weather conditions, especially, rain, lightning and
flash thunderstorms. Even though our golf course has a weather warning system in place, there are no guarantees for the
full protection of golfers who are in the exposed elements. The system will, however, warn golfers of nearby lightning
strikes. It is advisable that golfers should take cover when the siren is sounded.
In the past month, the Golf Committee would like to thank Members whom participated in the RSC and RSGC Interport
matches. We would like also to congratulate the Thai Team for their outstanding performance in this years Rama VII
trophy. Congratulations also go to 2015 Mixed Team Championship champions of Khun Soratat and Khun Thippawan

The Club Championship, RBSC Cup
and Senior Club Championship return
to the RBSC Golf Course in April. The
Clubs best golfers will be out in force
for a chance to win one of the most

Last year saw Khun Piyakan Kriangkrai

win, he needed to pull off an impressive
comeback over the last three holes to

RAMA VII TROPHY
Parity has highlighted the Rama VII Trophy in recent times.
Every team has won the trophy at least once since 2009
including the American teams first-ever victory last year.
Thailand dominated the event for some time before 2009 and
boasts a total of 36 victories in the tournaments long history.
You can add one more win to that total as the Thai team
once again returned to the top at the 2015 Rama VII Trophy.
The Thai team had several new faces this year and the
players came together to brush aside the competition. The
competition has been held 47 times with the Thai team
claiming an outright victory on 37 of those occasions. Not a
bad winning percentage.

Malaysia was the destination for a weekend of Interport matches to begin March. The annual three-day tour began on
Friday, 6th March with a contest against Royal Selangor Club. RBSC was hoping to end their winless run in this fixture
having lost the previous two matches at RSC.
The visitors were unable to get the win but did get some consolation from the result as the two sides end the affair tied.
RBSC would be pleased with the result while RSC were left to rue their missed opportunity to win the Interport.
RSC was a very gracious host as always and the two teams capped off the day with a festive celebration and dinner. It
was a chance for Members to renew acquaintances with their counterparts from RSC over good food and many laughs.

MOST HISTORIC CLUB
The golfers of RBSC concluded their
trip to Malaysia with the annual away
Interport match with the Royal Selangor
Golf Club. RSGC is undoubtable the
countrys best golf club and the two-day
match allows golfers from RBSC to play
on the Clubs beautiful grounds. RSGCs
two 18-hole championship courses are
both scenic and challenging for players.
The two teams once again contested for
the Erawan Cup and Seladang Cup. The
two trophies serve as a symbol of the
two clubs friendship. RSGC would win
back both cups from RBSC this time.
RBSC went into the match as holders
of the cups thanks to an impressive win
in Bangkok during January. This match
completes the Interport series between
the two clubs for 2015.

It was a historic turnout for a historic event as a record

number of participants turned out for this years Captains
Cup at RBSC. It was the fifth year of the competition
which prides itself on being much more than just a test of
golfing ability. It is social event which people of all different
backgrounds and beliefs come together through common
interests such as being Members of RBSC, golf and beer.
The format for the Captains Cup is simple. The Yanks who
were educated in America compete in a Ryder Cup-esque
tournament against the lads who studied in the UK in a oneday match. Each team is comprised of 16 RBSC Members,
handpicked by UK captain Songkran Grachangnetara and
US captain Thitinand Chumpani to represent their respective
nation.
In true Ryder Cup style, the format is four-ball with the captains
matching pairings and using strategy to get a leg up on their
counterpart. The tournament is based on the August Cup which is
a similar tournament held around Thailand and open to everyone.
RBSC Members realized that there should be something similar
for their own Club and in 2011 the Captains Cup was born.
According to Songkran, it is the spirit of the Captains Cup that
sets it apart from other golf competitions. Its not just about the

golf. In fact, we have a wide range of skills that play. There are
your guys who play regularly, but there are also guys who will
only play one round of golf during the year and that happens to
be here. This is very much a social gathering, he explains.
It is this desire of inclusivism that is the hallmark of the
Captains Cup. Songkran detailed, Everyone on the two teams
probably have wildly different political and personal beliefs,
but we can still come together and have some fun because of

what we have in common. The only thing that matters on this

day is having fun and playing golf. I think that is why we all
have such a good time.
This years tournament was again won by the American team
who claimed the cup for the third straight year. This win saw
the Yanks take the lead in the series standings. The UK team
won the event the first two times before the Americans rose to
power. This means the US Captain will get to keep ahold of
the cup for a third consecutive year.
Its a great event and a great rivalry. We talk about it all year
long. The two teams are always boasting and trash talking but
it is friendly. We have all become good friends, Songkran
stated. The two teams are evenly matched and it is just an exciting event. We all come out, have a great time, play some golf
and then have a party afterward.
This year featured a special guest as Mark Kent, the British Ambassador to Thailand, stopped by to give a rousing a speech and
join in the post-match festivities. Songkran hopes this becomes another tradition for the Captains Cup. It was great for Mark
to come and hangout. He had a really great speech. Maybe it becomes a yearly thing. Who knows? Maybe we can have the next
American Ambassador come out to, he said.
Songkran was also quick to thank the RBSC staff for their efforts in making the Captains Cup such a success. We couldnt do it
with the help of the staff. The really rolled out the red carpet for us and did a great job with everything, he added.
Despite all the fun, it will be another year of glory for the Yanks and disappointment for the Brits. At the end of the day, the
better team won. I wont make any excuses. If there is one caveat, it is that it is harder to find real Brits. Im sure we will be
stronger next year though, Songkran concluded.

- The Captains Cup is an invitation only annual tournament held at RBSC which pits old England Students against old US
students in a four ball match play tournament.
- This year there were 32 participants but the event has become but the events popularity has increased and there is a
possibility the field could continue to expand.
- All players share costs equally for a prize giving ceremony where a few speeches are made and lots of food and beer
consumed on the premises.
- Current overall tally is there victories for the USA and two for England. The USA team is on a three year winning streak. The
winning Captain gets to keep the Cup for the year.
- The Captains Cup is the most talked about tournament in the Golf section.

Dear Ladies,
I would like to wish all the ladies and your families a
fun and pleasant time during the upcoming Songkran
Festival.
We still have the special prizes for the lady golfers
who make a hole in one during one of the competitions
organized by the Ladies Golf Section. Here are the great
prizes that are available:
- Ruby earrings from ex-captain Narumol Malligan for
the first lady golfer to shoot a hole in one.
- ECCO golf shoes from myself for the next lady golfer
to make a hole in one.
If no one gets the prizes, we will put the prizes in the
lucky draw during the Captains Prizes competition in
October. The lucky ladies should attend at least three
tournaments organized by the Ladies Golf section from

NEW CHAMPS AT H.M. QUEEN

RAMBHAI BARNI CUP
For the past two years, Khun Jittakarn Chandraviroj and Khun
Montira Wongtrakun have won the H.M. Queen Rambhai Barni
Cup. The duos success was no fluke but a rare three-peat would
not be in the stars for them this year. A new team would be able
to raise the trophy this year in a wide open competition.
Khun Chindarat Kruavanichkit and Khun Phandhida
Sucharittanonta were the victors of this years H.M. Queen
Rambhai Barni Cup on 10th February. Finishing as runners up
were Dr. Yolvilai Sethabutra and Khun Sudachan Euarchukiatti
who also played well. All the golfers who participated should
be commended for their fine efforts on this day. It was another
fun event from the RBSC Ladies Golf Section.

FAMILIAR FACE WINS PRINCE

CHULA CHAKRABONGSE CUP
Khun Ausanee Sosothikul added another trophy to her already impressive collection by winning the Prince Chula
Chakrabongse Cup on 16th March. Khun Ausanee has been no stranger to the winners circle having won several
tournaments over the past two years.
However, this one was far different than her other victories. The Prince Chula Chakrabongse Cup is a bogey competition
where birdies or better count for a point and a bogey or worse will deduct a point from the players score. The lady with
the most points at the end of the round is the winner and this year that was Khun Ausanee. Khun Nitayada Purananda
proved successful under the format as well finishing as the runner-up.

years after joining the Asian Tour.

Asian golf legend Thongchai Jaidee has maintained his

stature as the highest earning golfer on the Asian Tour ahead
of countryman Thaworn Wiratchant, with five other Thais
featuring prominently on the Career Money List.
The 45-year-old Thongchai, the only player in history to
win three Order of Merit crowns, has accumulated US$5.31
million in earnings on the Asian Tour since making his debut
on the regions premier Tour in 1999. His achievement is
highly commendable as Thongchai has featured extensively
with great success as well in Europe over the past decade.
With a record 18 career victories in Asia, evergreen Thaworn,
who is 48, sits in second place with US$4.25 million in
earnings, with fellow Thais Prayad Marksaeng (US$3.29
million), Prom Meesawat (US$2.56 million) and Chapchai
Nirat (US$2.43 million) featuring in the top-10 of the Career
Money List in fifth, eighth and 10th positions respectively.
Kiradech Aphibarnrat, the 2013 Asian Tour number one when
he earned US$1.12 million that season, is ranked 12th with
US$2.33 million while Chawalit Plaphol is 19th on the list
with US$1.8 million. The seven Thais have an accumulated
51 Asian Tour victories, ranking Thailand as the most
successful golfing nation in the region to date.
Indias golfing stars come a close second behind Thailand,
with three players Jeev Milkha Singh, Jyoti Randhawa
and Anirban Lahiri featuring in the top-10. Shiv Kapur
and S.S.P Chawrasia are 12th and 14th on the list, while
Arjun Atwal is ranked 21st. Singh, Asias number one in
2006 and 2008, is third on the earnings list with US$3.37
million. With six career wins on the Asian Tour, he also
holds the record of earning the highest prize winnings in a
single season with US$1.45 million in 2008.

Other notable names in the top-20 Career Money List include

Singapores Mardan Mamat in 11th position with US$2.33
million in prize winnings, Chinese Taipeis Lin Wen-tang who
is 16thwith US$2.06 million, and Filipino duo Juvic Pagunsan
and Angelo Que, who are 17th and 20thwith US$1.89 million
and US$1.78 million respectively.
The most successful international golfer to date is Scott Hend
of Australia, who is ranked seventh on the Career Money List
with US$2.75 million. Hend has won six times on the Asian
Tour since joining the circuit in 2007.

The Key Move : Making

a smooth transition
Without a doubt, the most important move
as well as the most difficult move in the golf
swing is the transition from the top of the
backswing down to the pre-impact position.

When making a backswing, the shoulders

will rotate horizontally around your spine
(which is tilted slightly forward from your
hips). However, they (your shoulders) do
not rotate horizontally immediately on the
downswing. For a very brief instance, the
shoulders will move vertically (your hips
will move first on the downswing).
You must feel the right shoulder dropping
the arms falling and the right elbow
tucking in to your hip. As you do this,
you must keep your wrists cocked while
maintaining a 90 degree angle between your
right forearm and the shaft. When the shaft
drops down parallel to the ground, the wrists
should still be in the cocked position. Now
is when you can release the wrists and strike
the golf ball with tremendous power and lots
of clubhead speed.

My Rig ht Knee. My Wrists Are Fully Cocked At
The Top And Have Formed A 90 Degree Angle
Between My Forearms And The Shaft.

My weig ht is shifted 90 degrees onto my left leg.

My rig ht shoulder has dropped down. I still have
the same 90 degree angle between my forearms
and shaft like I had at the top.

Most golfers will rotate their shoulders

horizontally on the downswing which
makes your angle of attack to steep and
swing path too much outside to inside
which makes the ball slice.
So, work on making a slow backswing by
moving the legs and hips first on the downswing
and feel your right shoulder dropping to get

I have uncocked my wrist too early on the

downswing. The clubhead will swing across the

AN APRIL TRADITION

Its hot outside and the warm season has engulfed Bangkok.
There is only one dish made especially to beat the heat. The
Kao Chae set is a mixture of cool, refreshing tastes that offer
a respite from the searing temperatures. This April tradition
is over 200 years old and has been pleasing generations
with its great flavour.
The Kao Chae set at RBSC contains everything you would
