BMW plant will boost

carbon fiber volume
Hans Greimel

BEIJING BMW AG, which plans

to make extensive use of carbon fiber
in its upcoming Megacity electric vehicle, sees wider applications for the
strong, lightweight material.
We will be the first manufacturer
to take carbon fiber to effectively
high volume, BMWs global sales
head, Ian Robertson, said last month
at the Beijing auto show.
Carbon fiber technology shows
promise for uses beyond the electricvehicle project, Robertson said. That
could help the venture generate better economies of scale.

The German manufacturer and

partner SGL Group plan to build a
$100 million carbon fiber manufacturing plant in Washington
state to supply parts of the new
electric car.
The Washington plant will make
the carbon fiber, and a factory in Germany will mold it into paneling for
the Megacity, which arrives in 2013,
Robertson said.
We are developing a lot of volume
technology here, he said.
Weight savings from carbon fiber
in the Megacity nearly compensates
for the extra weight of the electric vehicles batteries. The material also

has excellent crash safety characteristics.
Although carbon fiber is expensive,
its weight savings also generate cost
advantages.
By using carbon fiber, which is a
little more expensive but 30 percent
lighter, you dont need as many batteries for the same range, Robertson
said.
Theres a trade-off that actually
works. c

U.S. executive named CEO

of Japanese glass company
James B. Treece
jtreece@crain.com

In a rare case of a non-Japanese

outsider taking charge of a Japanese
auto supplier, Craig Naylor will become CEO of NSG Group, the former
Nippon Sheet Glass Co.
Naylor, 61, joined NSG Group on
May 1 as CEO-designate, pending
election to his new post by shareholders June 29. He will replace Katsuji Fujimoto, who moves up to the
ceremonial post of chairman. Former Chairman Yozo Izuhara is retiring.
Naylor, a U.S. citizen, graduated
from Stevens Institute of Technology
in Hoboken, N.J., in 1970 with a

bachelors degree in chemical engineering. He had been a nonexecutive

director of Delphi Corp. from February 2005 through September 2009
and spent 36 years at E.I. du Pont de
Nemours & Co.
Naylor held a variety of positions at
DuPont, including regional director
of DuPont Automotive for Asia-Pacific, based in Japan, from 1987 to
1991; group vice president for AsiaPacific, based in China, in 2004; and
group vice president of DuPont Electronic and Communication Technologies from June 2004 until December 2006.
Automotive glass accounts for
about 40 percent of NSGs sales. c
