Lesson Plan Outline for Teaching with Technology (Games)

Joe Fuller
Math
Standards: State and/or Common Core
6.NS.C.5
Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having
opposite directions or values: Use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real
world contexts, explaining the meaning of zero in each situation.
Subject(s) of the lesson
Prerequisite Knowledge: What do they need to know? What will
you have them recall?
Positive and Negative numbers
Students will need to recall words that mean to add or subtract.
Example: gain, loss, increase, decrease, forward, backward
Content Describe in a paragraph. You can also add an outline.
Students will be learning about positive and negative numbers. Students will be learning how to
determine if a quantity is positive or negative based on the words describing the quantity. Students
will be shown how to add and subtract positive and negative numbers using a horizontal number
line.
List the objectives for this lesson. They should include what the students will learn from your
instruction.
SWBAT will be able to determine if quantity is positive or negative.
SWBAT use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real world context.
How will you teach the content? Details help. Include the game(s), what do you do before the
games and how do you follow-up.
1. Present students with a list of quantity statements and ask students to determine if the
change is positive or negative. Make a list that includes words that represent positive and
negative statements for students to use as reference. (Make anchor chart)
2. Draw a horizontal number line on whiteboard. Review quantity statements using the number line
to show the change in value. (Move right for positive and left for negative)
3. Introduce the game of Integer Football and tell students that they will have to move along the
horizontal number line in the game to show positive and negative plays.
4. After students play game, ask them how the game of football uses positive and negative
integers.
5. Finally, I will ask students to think about what other activities or games involve positive and
negative numbers. (Discussion)
6. End lesson with an exit slip in which students determining positive and negative quantities in
word statements.
Additional materials you will use and how will you use them.
Number line: Number line will be used to give visual representation of positive and negative
changes in quantities.
Anchor Chart: It will be created and used as a reference guide for students.

Evaluation Strategies
Students will be evaluated using an exit slip: The exit slip will include a math statement that involves
positive and negative changes in quantity. Students will have to solve the word problem and arrive
at the correct number. The word problem will be very similar to Integer Football.
