Installation and Configuration of Options in the Controller 220

Installing the G1512A controller

Installing the G1512A controller

The G1512A controller provides power and the communication
interface for 18593A/B or G1513A injectors and for the 18596A or
18596B/C tray.
This section covers connecting the injector and tray cables to the
controller, connecting the controller to the gas chromatograph,
connecting the controller to the datahandling device, and plugging
in the controller.
Find the power cord in the controller box. Check the shape of the
plug and the source voltage listed on the packing contents sheet.
Verify that the power cord is appropriate for the power source at
your facility.

Connecting cables to other instruments

The automatic liquid sampler communicates to other instruments
via cables that connect the various connectors on the controller.
The following figure shows the connectors on the back of the
controller and what they are for.
If you are using a ChemStation, read the next section, Configuring
the GPIB address. If you are using a Lab Automation System read
the section on Configuring the RS232C connector later in this
chapter.

Configuring the G1512A

Configuring the GPIB communication mode and address
When you are using either the ChemStation (MSDOS series) or the
ChemStation (HPUX Series), you must set the address switches on
the back of the G1512A controller.
1. Locate mode switches and set for the ChemStation you are using:
1,0

3365A ChemStation

1,0

MSD ChemStation, HPUX Series

1,1

6890, ChemStation,
MSD ChemStation Rev 3.7 and above

2. Locate the address switches on the controller (see Figure 2203).

When facing the back of the controller, the five switches farthest to
the right are the GPIB address switches.
3. Set the GPIB address switches.
D

With any ChemStation, set the address to a unique number.

The usual address for the first automatic liquid sampler
connected to a ChemStation (HPUX Series) is 8." For an
additional automatic liquid sampler, choose any unused
address. A list of switch settings corresponding to different
addresses is shown in Figure 2203.

Configuring for INET communication

When configuring the controller for INET communication, locate
the mode switches and set them to 0,0.

Configuring for standalone communication

Standalone means that the sequence is controlled by the switches in

the injector. The G1512A has two standalone configurations:
synchronous and asynchronous. When configuring the controller for
synchronous standalone, the mode switches are set the same as for
INET communication: 0,0. If the system has two injectors and a
tray, both injectors will inject at the same time, synchronously.
Asynchronous standalone mode is used when there are two injectors
with no tray and you want them to inject independently or
asynchronously by pressing START on the appropriate injector.
NOTE: The asynchronous standalone control configuration with
two injectors but without a tray is only supported by Agilent
Technologies for isothermal analyses.
When configuring the controller for asynchronous standalone
control, set the mode switches to 0,1.

Configuring the G1512A

Setting the RS232C baud rate on a G1512A controller

This controller is shipped with a baud rate setting of 2400. If you do
not need to change the setting, turn to the section on Connecting the
injector cables later in this chapter.
The two B switches located in the left bank of switches on the back
of the controller are used to set the baud rate as shown in the table
of left hand switch settings below.

Setting the communication mode on a G1512A controller

The controller is capable of communicating on RS232 with three
different command sets. The mode switches (M,M) are used to
determine the command set.
