CASE STUDY: How Cimation Provided

a Series of Iterative Projects to

Upgrade a Terminal Facility
Executive Summary:
A well-known midstream operator contracted Cimation to perform an iterative series of system upgrades for a major
terminal facility located in southern Louisiana, eventually resulting in a large-scale overhaul of the facilitys terminal
control system. Due to the limited ROI associated with the replacement of an entire system, the client used an
incremental migration philosophy to modernizing through a number of smaller, inter-related projects. This approach
could have resulted in a series of projects that did not improve capabilities, functionality, or efficiency, resulting in an
under-performing system that was no better than the original. But thanks to Cimations expertise, the client developed
an upgrade model that included integrated system components and allowed for the development of functional
reporting solutions that improve overall performance.

Project #1: Terminal Control System and Human Machine Interface (HMI) Upgrade
The GE Proficy SCADA and HMI system was both outdated and ineffective. The client wanted to update their system
with a modern, standardized, scalable solution.

Cimation Solutions

Implemented Terminal Control System using Wonderware InTouch and GE RX3i PLCs interfacing with:
Pipeline Control Center
Rotork Master Stations
Rosemount FCUs and Tank Gauges
Motor Control Centers (MCCs)
Built new graphics with popups and indirects using GE PLC program logic according to the companys HMI standards
Document HMI design as pre-work for development of new, company-wide HMI Specifications
Conduct Offsite Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) at Cimations offices
Complete commissioning and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) onsite at the facility

Project #2: Storage Facility Upgrade

Once the new Terminal Control System was in place, its flexibility and scalability were tested with
the addition of new storage facilities that required expansion panels and custom PLCs to patch
into the existing system.

Cimation Solutions
Program and configure the following:
PID loop in Empire Terminal Pump PLC
Expansion panels to NWT GE Rx3i PLC to accommodate new
sump and pump
Modbus communications interface to existingPLC for Mutlin
Motor Protection Relay
QuickPanel to accommodate equipment
and operational changes
Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) offsite
Commissioning and Site Acceptance
Testing (SAT)

Projects to Upgrade a Terminal Facility

Project #3: Facility Trending and Reporting

Upgrade on the Historian Client
To improve data storage capabilities and reporting functionality,
Cimation designed, tested, and installed a server-class computer
running Windows Server 2008 with InSQL to host the master
historian database. This allowed the Wonderware stations to
communicate with the new server for trending information.

Cimation Solutions
Furnish and configure server-class computer running Windows Server 2008 with InSQL
Install Wonderware Historian Client add-in and configure trend screens
Onsite commissioning

Project #4: Process Control Network (PCN) and Fiber Upgrade

Cimation provided Project Management, Procurement Support, Industrial IT, and Automation Services for
network and fiber upgrades of the Terminals PCN. They redesigned the terminal PCN to increase
redundancy, robustness, and scalability through the implementation of a redundant ring topography.

Cimation Solutions
PCN Upgrade:
Furnish and configure server-class computer running Windows Server 2008 with InSQL
Install Wonderware Historian Client add-in and configure trend screens
Onsite commissioning
Fiber Upgrade:
Produce Bill of Material (BOM) for required equipment
Create detailed cable schedule for new and existing fiber
Design Network Diagrams including:
Logical (Purdue Model) Network Diagram of Terminal PCN
Detailed Network Block Diagram of Terminal PCN
Develop procedure for upgrade including schedule and scope of work for contractors

Projects to Upgrade a Terminal Facility

Project #5: Thin Client Upgrade

Cimation designed and implemented a thin client upgrade
at the terminal facility to improve usability, reduce IT
support costs, and increase budgetary efficiency.

Cimation Solutions
BOM for upgrades of existing thin clients in Control
Room to monitor dual NIC machines
Detail infrastructure and equipment needed to add
additional thin clients on site
Research and create plan for monitoring static
invertors
Design network infrastructure for adding a PLC to the
Main Motor Control Center
Research and create plan to add SNMP monitoring for GE iNET radios
Interface with clients in-house IT group for:
Implementation of Cal-Ky PLCs using Layer 3 switching/routing
Implementation of pending PCN upgrades

Project Outcome
Cimation successfully completed each of the projects listed above and continues to have a successful
working relationship with the client. We are currently engaged in numerous, similar projects throughout
North America. The client leveraged the incredible expertise of our experienced engineers and project
managers to develop a long-term schedule that successfully integrates a series of multi-faceted
projects. Thanks to our agility and innovation, Cimation got the job done. Right.
