The connection between the previous four generations and the following family is unproven.
However, no other Thomas NODEN of this approximate age and location has been found in
Cheshire County. The surname is uncommon enough that one can search for all occasions of
rites involving this name.

Sarah Nodens buried at Davenham in the Spring of 1767. One was the mother and the other was

Third Generation
2 1
Issue of Jonathan NODEN [no. 2] ( Thomas NODEN [no. 1]) and Martha Palin
3 2
3.   Ralph NODEN, son of Jonathan NODEN [no. 2] and Martha Palin. Born about 1771 in
Newton, Cheshire England. Baptized on 2 Feb. 1771 in Middlewich, Cheshire, St Michael & All
Angels Church when an infant. Died before 1841 in Cheshire England.

20 May 1803 in Middlewich.
iii.  son John NODEN b. on 23 March 1804; bap. on 8 July 1804 in Middlewich

iv.  son Ralph NODEN b. on 1 Sep. 1806; bap. on 4 Sep. 1806 in Middlewich when
three days old; d. in 1808, one or two years old; bur. on 6 Feb. 1808 in Middlewich.
Married second Ann CHATTERTON when about 37 years old (Ann was about 28 years old).
Ann Chatterton b. about 1780 in Middlewich, Cheshire, England; bap. on 17 Jan. 1781 in
Middlewich when about a year old; d. after 1861. (Note: Based on the christening date, it is
estimated that she was born in 1780. Age derived based on information given by her in the 1851
and 1861 Census for Middlewich is not helpful (60 in 1841; 68 in 1851; 85 in 1861).) Ann
Chatterton was probably the daughter of John and Mary Chatterton, “paupers”, and christened 16
Aug 1808 in Middlewich St Michael Parish. A witness to her marriage to Ralph was Henry
Chatterton. It is unknown what relationship Henry had to Ann. Henry was the Middlewich parish
clerk, so there may not be a direct familial relationship.
Issue of Ralph NODEN and Ann Chatterton:

(Frances?).
6 viii.  son Robert NODEN b. about 1815 in Newton.
ix.  dau. Martha NODEN b. in Newton; bap. on 15 March 1818 in Middlewich.
Ralph Noden was a labourer when he married Ann Chatterton. They each made their marks
rather than signing, and the witnesses were William Noden and Henry Chatterton. X. George
Leigh, officiator.

It is assumed that Ralph is no longer living in 1841 since he is no longer part of the household
and his wife, Ann, is living with their son, Robert. In the 1851 British census for Newton,
Middleton, his widow, Ann, is living with son, Thomas, and brother-in-law William. Is Ralph’s
brother, William, the same one who witnessed their marriage?

Cheshire, England when negative five days old. Died on 25 Dec. 1906 in McKeesport,
Allegheny, Pennsylvania, 73 years old. Buried in Richland Cemetery, Allegheny, Pennsylvania.
Married Sarah MADDOCK, dau. of Peter Maddock and Elizabeth Shalcross (dau. of James
Shalcross and Martha Unknown), on 27 April 1863 in St Matthew’s Parish Church, Manchester
when 29 years old (Sarah was 29 or 30 years old). Sarah Maddock b. in 1833 in Bostock,
Cheshire; bap. on 25 Aug. 1833 in St Wilfred’s Davenham, Cheshire, England when an infant; d.
on 31 Dec. 1866 in Clive, Northwich, Cheshire, England, 32 or 33 years old.
Sarah and Thomas did marriage banns on 24 August 1856, 31 August 1856, and 7 Sep 1856 at St
Michaels & All Angels Church in Middlewich. However, they didn’t marry until 1863. Why the
marriage was postponed is unknown, and why they married in Manchester is also unknown.
They indicated that they were living at 10 Tickle Street in Manchester. Witnesses were John and
Mary Longe. Sarah signed her name, but Thomas made his mark.
Issue of Thomas NODEN and Sarah Maddock:

Middlewich when newborn; d. on 31 Dec. 1866 in Clive, newborn.
*The birthdate given by Thomas for family records is later than the christening date

Thomas and Sarah indicated their intent to marry by banns at the Middlewich Parish Church on
24 August, 31 August, and 7 September 1856. However, it appears that the marriage didn’t take
place until 1863. It could be that living together unmarried for 7 years is why they went to
another county to marry, being embarrassed to admit they had been unmarried.

There is a child by the name of Thomas Ralph Noden, b. 1859. Could this be another son of
Thomas and Sarah?

Sarah died in childbirth (of convulsions) on 31 December 1866, and the child, Sarah, died as
well.
In the 1851 census, Thomas is no longer living with Ralph and Elizabeth, but there is a Thomas,
age 18, farm labourer (born Middlewich) living in Kinderton Edge nearby which may be him.

In 1861, he is living in Wharton, Middlewich Road (2606, p. 84, #231):

Thomas Noden, head, married 27, saltboiler, b. Middlewich
Sarah Noden, wife, 27, b. Bostock
George, son, 3, b. Newton
John, brother, unmarried, 17, saltworks laborer, b. Croxton
Martha Maddock, nurse child, 1, b. Kinderton
In the 1871 census, he is living on Wheelock Street (3700, p. 4, #20)
Thomas Noden, age 39, widower
George, son, 13 (a clogger apprentice), b. Newton
Elizabeth E., daughter, 9, b. Wharton
Jesse, son, age 7, b. Clive

It is likely that Thomas remarried after the death of Sarah. We find a Thomas Noden in the 1881
and 1891 census records as living with wife, Jane, on Station Road in Wharton. The age and
occupation are the same as our Thomas. Thomas Noden married Jane Jackson in 1872
(Northwich, Sep 1872, 8a, 441). Jane apparently died in 1892 (Northwich, Dec 1892, 8a, 191).
Thomas sailed to the States, arriving 19 Jul 1892 in Philadelphia on the British Princess. His
ultimate destination was Pittsburgh to meet his brother (?) and his occupation is saltmaker. He
gives his age as 57.

Thomas lived with son Jesse and his wife Ada in the States. Effie Noden Simpson told her
daughter that Thomas died on Christmas day in 1906. He opened his gifts, and died later in the
day. His obituary reads:

“Thomas Nodin, aged 73 years and six months, died at the home of his son, Jesse Nodin, No.
2809 Cliff street, at an early hour this morning. Deceased had been in poor health for some time,
suffering from the infirmities of old age. He was a native of England, but had resided in this
country for a number of years. He was a member of the First United Brethren church and the
funeral will take place from that church at 2 clock on Friday afternoon. Interment will be made in
Richland cemetery.”

Elinor Cogley took a photo of Thomas to Cliff street where it was taken, and two people
remembered him. Both remembered him selling milk. One woman remembered him because of
his long beard and recalled that he had a cow, goat, chickens, and a large garden. Another woman
remembered carrying a pail every morning to buy cows milk from him.

Thomas’s death certificate indicated that he was a widow.

9.   John NODEN, son of Ralph NODEN [no. 5] and Elizabeth (Betty) Mountfield. Born
about 1843 in Newton, Cheshire, England. Died in 1887 in Middlewich, Cheshire, about 44
years old. Buried on 7 May 1887 in Middlewich Cemetery.
Married first Ann WHARTON, dau. of John Wharton (sailor), on 16 April 1865 when about 22
years old (Ann was about 20 years old). Ann Wharton b. about 1845; d. in 1874 in Middlewich,
about 29 years old; bur. on 10 April 1874 in Middlewich Cemetery.
Issue of John NODEN and Ann Wharton:
6
i.  dau. Frances NODEN b. about 1867; m. Henry Clare (abt. 1835–) on 30 Nov.
1890 when about 23 years old (Henry was about 55 years old).
ii.  son Thomas NODEN b. about 1870; m. Jeannette Fox (abt. 1870–) on 26 Dec.
1892 when about 22 years old (Jeannette was about 22 years old).
iii.  dau. Eliza NODEN b. about 1866; m. Richard Haddock on 1 May 1887 in
Middlewich, Cheshire, England when about 21 years old.
iv.  son John NODEN b. about 1873; d. in 1874 in Middlewich, about a year old;
bur. on 29 July 1874 in Middlewich Cemetery.
Married second Ellen EGERTON on 3 June 1880 when about 37 years old (Ellen was about 22
years old). Ellen Egerton b. about 1858.
John Noden was living on Lower Street in 1871:
John Noden, head, married, 28, salt laborer & bricklayer, b. Middlewich
Ann, wife, 24, b. Davenham
Frances, daughter 4, scholar, b. Middlewich
Thomas H., son, 1, b. Middlewich

There is a John Noden living in Middlewich in 1881 on Queen Street. There is no mention of his
children from Ann; however, it appears that this is the correct John, and it explains where his
mother was living in 1881:

John Noden, head, married, 34, bricklayer, b. Middlewich

Ellen, wife, 28, b. Middlewich
Alice Ann Egerton, stepdaughter, 8, scholar, b. Middlewich
Mary Ellen Egerton, stepdaughter, 6, scholar, b. Middlewich
Elizabeth Egerton, stepdaughter, 2, b. Middlewich
John Egerton, stepson, 1, b. Middlewich
Elizabeth Noden, mother, widow, 68, bricklayers mother, b. Over

It is logical to assume that these are children of John’s second wife, Ellen Egerton.

In the 1861 census, he is living with his parents and is a school boy.

In 1871, he is living with his parents and is a gardeners laborer.

A daughter of a Henry Noden, “Annie”, died on 7 July 1874 at age 4 months. Perhaps this is a
daughter of our Henry.

Notes on Rev. George NODEN:
George's birth certificate gives his mother’s maiden name as Maddock and his father’s
occupation as salt maker.
His death certificate gives his occupation as Minister; also insurance agent for Metropolitan Life
Ins, NY
George Noden came to the United States in 1880 as a result of a job offer he received from
Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He and his wife, “Marianne”, arrived at the Port of New
York on 4 June 1880 on the S. S. Nevada, which embarked from Liverpool and Queenstown.
Both give their ages as 20. There is also a Jessie Noden, age 19, female, on the same ship. Could
this be a mistake and it was his brother, Jessie?

A transcript of the letter to George from Metropolitan Life dated April 30, 1880, follows:

Dear Sir

The undersigned acting for and in behalf of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company of New
York, United States of America hereby appoints you one of the Assistant Superintendents in the
Industrial Branch of said Company at a salary of Fifteen dollars per week payable weekly. Said
salary to commence from the date of your arrival at the Home Office of the Company situated in
the Metropolitan Building #32 Park Place, New York City. In addition to the above salary you
will be entitled to a salary contingent upon the increase of the Debit in your district - i.e. - one
time the amount of said Increase.

It is also agreed by the undersigned on behalf of said Company that you shall be allowed a
Steerage Passage to New York, and that the incidental expenses necessary to embarkation shall
be paid by said Company.

The conditions of this appointment are that you shall submit yourself to the direction of the
President of said Company - that you abide by the rules and regulations as now laid down and to
be laid down by said Company for the government of its Agents; that you surrender this letter of
appointment to the President of the Company on your arrival in New York, and accept in lieu
thereof the regular Assistant Superintendent’s Contract embodying these terms - and that you
devote your whole time in the interest of said Company.

Very truly yours,

Brice Collard

In 1879, Metropolitan entered the field of Industrial insurance. Brice Collard, a British insurance
man,was contracted as the local deputy to send over a sizeable number of Englishmen
experienced in industrial insurance to launch the new effort in the US. Between 1879 and 1884
Mr. Collard commuted back and forth from London to New York, bring to the US several
hundred able men, together with their families. Once located in key centers, these men had a
heroic task to accomplish - to hire and train local agents in the new approach, and to organize
and establish district offices from the ground up. The first group sailed from England on April 3,
1880. Deputy superintendents received weekly salaries of $15. It is unknown how long George
stayed with Metropolitan.

Miriam Henretty said that George died at his son Paul’s home. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage.
Maram was there with him at the time. That is why he was buried in Nova, Ohio, and not
Pennsylvania . Daune Henretty and his cousin Herky (Harry’s son) were attempting in 1993 to
have George’s remains moved next to Maram’s since he was buried alone. Miriam remembered
her grandfather well. He was a big man with a loud vibrant voice when he preached a sermon.
He never needed a microphone.

Rev. Noden officiated at numerous ceremonies associated with the church. The funeral service
for Alice Snook Jackson on Sunday, 12 August 1894 was given by the Reverend George Noden
to a large congregation in the United Brethren Church in New Paris. Rev. Noden took as his text
part of Ecclesiastes VIII, 1 ...and the day of death than the day of one’s birth. Received Quarterly
Conference License, 1882; received Annual Conference License, 1883; admitted into Allegheny
Conference, 1883; ordained by Bishop J. Weaver, 1886. He served Pittsburgh Mission, 1883-
1885; Mahoning, 1885-1887; Newburg, 1887-1888; Bellefonte, 1888-1890; Port Matilda, 1890-
1893; New Paris, 1893-1894; East Freedom, 1894-1899; Bigler, 1899-1902 ; Middletown, 1902-
1904; Superannuated, 1923—.
Mary Alice Wetzig said that George was apprenticed as a shoemaker, and there were indenture
papers for him, but Ruth destroyed them along with her mother’s indenture papers. Mary Alice
said that “Grandpa Noden went to work for the Metropolitan Insurance Co. (an English firm) and
came to this country with his bride to be an agent in Pittsburgh. After several years, he felt the
call to preach and left the Metropolitan and served small county circuits for the United Brethren
Church and then preached 20 years for the Lutheran Church. He was a hell-fire and damnation
preacher, but had mellowed by the time I knew him. He had been thrown from a buggy and was
quite deaf. He was a good looking old gentleman. Dick’s mother (Ruth) said that he ran the
household with an iron hand and did not want any of his children to marry.”

According to Mary Alice Wetzig, George and his family were poor and lived the last years with
son Jesse until he died and then spent 3 months at a time with Paul, Tom, and Ruth. In the 1920
census, George and Miriam were living with Jesse, Jennie, and their children Ernest, Alice,
Ralph, and Miriam. After Jesse’s death, Maram lived with her son, Tom, most of the time, and
George lived with his son, Paul.

Mary Alice described George as intelligent and well-read. She also said that Ruth blamed him for
their poverty though Tom said that his mother had urged him to go into the ministry.

George’s obituary reads: “Funeral services were held on Saturday for the Rev. George Noden,
age 85, of Nova, Ohio, who died Tuesday, July 7, 1942, after a brief illness. Death was due to the
infirmities of advanced age. The deceased was a minister of the Gospel for over fifty years, for
the greater part of the time serving the United Brethren conference. Surviving are his wife,
Meriam Rossell Noden, three sons, George Noden of Maddensville, Thomas Noden of Turtle
Creek and Paul Noden of Nova, Ohio, and a daughter, Ruth Wetzig of Texas. One son, Jesse
Noden, preceded him in death two years ago. Services on Saturday were held at 2 o’clock in the
Ashland funeral home. Burial was made in the cemetery nearby.”

Notes on Maram Elizabeth Mary Rossell:

Daune Henretty’s sister Kathleen Cuccia (pronounced Kusha) has Maram’s prayer and
devotional handbook. “ It was given to Maram in 1871 and she gave it to her great-
granddaughter Kath in 1942-3. This little hardback book has Maram’s young girl scriblings in it
and you can see where she had changed her name from MARAM to Marion to Marrion to
Mirriam to Miriam. “

Maram was raised by her grandmother. Mary Alice Wetzig had said decades before it was proven
that she lived with her grandmother Walker. Mary Alice said that Maram would not talk about
her mother and thought it was somewhat of a mystery. However, she probably simply didn’t
remember her since her mother died when she was just 4. As a young girl, Maram was
apprenticed as a seamstress, and Mary Alice saw her indenture papers, but Ruth destroyed them.
Mary Alice said that Maram was a photographer’s model as a young woman and her pictures
were shown in galleries in Liverpool. She had limited education and her grammar was poor, to
be expected considering the era.

In 1861, Maram is living with her parents and grandparents in Derby (RG9/2503 - St. Werburgh
Parish):
Robert Rossell, head, married, age 23, German yeast dealer, b. Ockbrook
Emma M. Rossell, wife, married, age 24, b. Derby
Marion E. Rossell, daughter, 10 months, b. Nottingham, Eastwood
Thomas Walker, head, married, age 61, Brazier, b. Coxbench, Derby
Elizabeth Walker, wife, married, age 57, b. Cambridge Whittlesea

After her mother died in 1864, her father remarried. It was probably at that time that she moved
in with her grandparents. In 1871, they are found in Toxteth Park, West Derby, Everton
(RG10/3821/60) at 49 Hughes Street:
Thomas Walker, head, married 70, brazier, b. Derbyshire, Derby
Elizabeth Walker, wife, married, 67, b. Northumberland, Cambridge
Marianne Rossell, granddaughter, 10, scholar, b. Nottingham

Miriam Henretty remembered her grandparents well. Miriam was her namesake and she loved
her grandmother very much. She describes her as a tiny person with beautiful long silvery white
hair which she wore up in a beautiful style. She played the piano in church and had a beautiful
soprano voice.

Robert David were already deceased by 1910.

Jesse applied for his naturalization papers on 6 Oct 1888 (on age), sponsored by Alfred
Matthews.

The family was affiliated with the United Brethren Church.

Notes on George Rossell NODEN:
Ross, which is the name George Rossell answered to, applied for a delayed birth certificate after
the death of both parents. His brother, Tom, and non-relatives A. F. Cutshall and Sarah Hocke,
signed affidavits. The application was made 22 Jul 1950. At the time, Ross was living in Three
Springs, PA.. He indicates that he was the first child born alive and that there were a total of 9
children born to George and Maram..

Ross worked at Westinghouse in Pittsburgh. His marriage (his second) to Della Madden ended
when she died of cancer, and he later married Odessa Lane. According to an article in the
Huntingdon paper, “G. Ross Noden of Maidensville was in town on Monday. Mr. Noden has
been employed on the right of ray of the Penn Central Light and Power Company, and was idle
on Monday.”{Huntington Daily News 1923}
Another article from Huntingdon Daily News: “Mr. G. Ross Noden, one of Springfield
township’s successful farmers and also secretary of the School Board, was in town on Saturday
transacting business for the township. Mr. Noden is one of the farmers who sets a pace for his
neighbors in farming and stock raising. He is also Superintendent of the Sunday School at
Walnut Grove.”Huntingdon Daily News, 2 November 1922, page 005.

Ross died in Venice, FL, 25 Sep 1969, and was buried in Three Springs Cemetery in PA
Notes on Mary Ivey Shirey:
Mary Ivey died in childbirth, according to Miriam Noden Henretty (letter to Sherry Noden dated
24 Feb 1977). Ivey was raised by grandmother Madden. (Ivey says she was raised by
grandmother Noden?) Ivey said that the child also died when her mother died, so it must have
been a second birth.
Notes on Della Madden:
Miriam Noden Henretty says that Della died of cancer. Miriam went with her grandmother
Noden to take care of her, and Miriam was with her when she died. Della and Miriam’s mother,
Jennie, were friends long before they married the brothers Ross and Jesse.
Notes on Odessa Myrtle Lane:
Odessa had 2 children from a previous marriage - Jack Lane and Melrose Lane. The tall tale is
that Odessa went insane and that her husband, Ross, kept her chained up under the floor.
According to her obituary quoted at “Find a Grave” site #26417377, she died in Nokomis,
Florida at 12:04 am, Friday, 9 Nov 1979, at the Venice Nursing Pavillion North, Venice, Florida.
She had been seriously ill for the last month of her life. She was survived by one daughter,
Melrose Lingo of Nokomis, and one granddaughter. One son preceded her in death. The
following brothers and sisters survive: Mrs. Jaynelle Fleck, Three Springs; Ira Lane, Port
Matilda; Mrs. Gertrude Fleck, Camp Hill; Mrs. Myrtle Ramsey, Harrisburg; Rufus Lane,
Orbisonia; and Corbett Lane, Shirleysburg, PA. Odessa was a lifetime memer of Mount Carmet
United Brethren Church, Three Springs, PA. Funeral survices were held at 2 pm Tuesday 13 Nov
at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with the Rev. Charles F. Rhodes officiating.

Notes on Jesse Hoult NODEN:
Jesse was the Transportation Director of Westinghouse Electric in East Pittsburgh. All inbound
raw and outbound finished on rail or rubber was the responsibility of Jesse. He was a well loved
and respected citizen of the Turtle Creek Valley (an area older than the U S A). Jesse fed many
hobos in the depression at his rear door; accessible from the trains at the bottom of the hill and
advertised to all vagrants by the green rags tied to the trees leading to the rear of the
Jesse/George house. They were ‘witnessed to’ before receiving any food or beverage. Jesse never
was laid off during the whole depression era.

He was also well known in the surrounding area for his ‘lay preaching’. This started when his
ordained father would be sick and Jesse would show to preach the Word. He was also well
known in money circles as he was The WhoHah of the Masons in the region. He swore in his
son-in-law (Curly Henretty) early in their relationship. He only had one mistress, his secretary, a
large blond Swede with an hourglass figure. She never married and said that he was the only man
she ever loved. Jesse died in his bedroom with my father sitting astride him pumping his arms
over his head to get more air into his rasping lungs. Only the doctor and my father were with him
in the room and his father George was praying in the lower bedroom (his). My uncle Jules
Durmis said that Jesse’ was the largest funeral he ever saw, just unbelievable. Jesse died of
carbon monoxide poisioning.
Notes for the family of Jesse Hoult NODEN and Jennie Johnston:
Daune Henretty says that Jennie lived with his family for most of his at-home years, at least 1952
through 1964.

In a letter dated 24 Feb 1977, Miriam (Daune’s mother), wrote that she was the oldest living
child of Jesse Hoult Noden and that she was taking care of her mother, Jennie, who was 91 at the
time and in a wheelchair. She had been confined to a wheelchair for 20 years, but could walk
some with a walker. They lived in two rooms in Amy’s house. Amy shared responsibility for
their mother’s care.

Miriam sent a newspaper article featuring her mother Jennie regarding a groundbreaking for the
new sanctuary of the Electric Heights Methodist Church in Turtle Creek. She is shown pictured
with a shovel in hand. Jennie was one of the oldest living members of the church, having joined
in 1902. She helped to build the first building as well. Formerly known as the Methodist
Protestant Church, it was situated on Eleventh Street in Turtle Creek. In 1937 a new building was
erected on James Street and has been used as the sanctuary and educational school.

Florida, 62 years old; m. Mary Alice Unknown (22 Sep. 1918–5 Nov. 1998 in
Pinellas).
Notes on Ruth Bibby NODEN:
Ruth’s son, Dick, said that his mother had sold her place in Pittsburgh in the spring of 1974 and
moved to St. Petersburg. She had her own apartment and was beginning to make friends. She
went to church, even on June 30. On Saturday, June 29, she was busy - having her hair done,
going out to lunch, and playing bridge. She suffered a stroke after breakfast on July 1. The
family did not know until about 2:00 pm and took her to the hospital. She was aware of
everything until she slipped into a coma on Wednesday evening. She died at 11:00 am July 5 at
the age of 87.

Miriam Henretty described Ruth as “fussy”. She was wealthy and was a school teacher by
profession.

Notes on Paul Walker NODEN:
Paul's occupation was machinist.
The marriage ceremony of Paul and Francis was performed in Turtle Creek by Rev. W. R.
Jamison, with Paul’s brother, Ross and his wife as witnesses.

According to his sister, Ruth, Paul was quite attractive to the ladies. Francis Cusworth had been a
classmate of Ruth’s in Union High School. Paul and Francis had many quarrels before they were
married and they broke up several times. The marriage was a rocky one from the beginning.

Paul did not finish high school, but he was a machinist by trade and an expert mechanic. Being a
genius with tools, he built his own car in the 1920’s, according to Ruth Wetzig.

While Jim, George, and Grace were still young, about 1927, the parents separated. Because
Francis’ salary as a teacher was not sufficient to support her children, they were devided among
her sisters to raise. Jim went with Thomas and Miriam Little; George went with Frank and
Florence Law; and Grace went with Victor and Grace Wilson. The two boys later went to Ohio to
live with their father.

Paul met and fell in love with Peg Snider. His wife would not give him a divorce, and Paul and
Peg were not married until after Francis’ death.

Paul moved to Florida about 1955 or 1956 and died in Hollywood, FL on 4 Feb 1965 from a
heart attack. He was buried at Hollywood Memorial Gardens East, 6301 Taft Street, Hollywood,
FL 33024, Section 7, Row 10.
Notes on Francis Isabell Cusworth:
After their separation, Francis tracked Paul down through the boys’ school (George and Jim) and
found that he was delivering the Cleveland Plain Dealer Newspaper in Elyria, Ohio. Francis
confronted him there, and Paul thought she had brought the police to arrest him for non-support
of the children. However, she just wanted to see the boys, since Paul would not bring them to
Pennsylvania.

Sometime in the 1930’s, Francis went back to college for further study in her teaching career.
After Francis got a teaching job in the New Kensington Schools, Grace moved back with her.
She was hired as a widow because it was not acceptable for a married woman to work. At first,
she was paid in script (paper that indicated how much money was owed her). On her death
certificate, it states that she was a school teacher for 5 years until she left that occupation in 1939
(for health reasons?).

Miriam Henretty said that didn’t see Uncle Paul and Aunt Fanny much, but she always liked her
aunt. She was always kind to the kids.
She died in Magee Hospital in Pittsburgh on December 27, 1940, and was buried in New
Kensington, Pennsylvania. The attending physician, Paul M. Rike, indicated essential
hypertension, malignant phase as the primary cause of death, with hypertrophy of heart and
hypostatic pneumonia as contributory causes. The informant was her sister, Mrs. Tom Little. It
appears that she was in the hospital from December 22 through December 27, and had problems
with hypertension for 2 years.Certificate of Death, Frances Noden, December 27, 1940.
Notes on Fannie “Peg” Snider:
Grace Noden Henke pointed out that the second Mrs. Noden was part of the events leading to the
separation of Paul and Francis. Peg may not have been the only one. An aunt told Grace that Paul
was the father of an illegitimate daughter, Paula. There is no proof, however.
