Academic and Technological Success at

Eastern Lancaster County School District
By Dr. Robert Hollister, Superintendent and Mr. Greg Frederick, K-12 Coordinator of RtII,
Assessment, and Federal Programming.
Recently, the Pennsylvania Department of
Education released the 20132014 School
Performance Profile (SPP) scores. The SPP
provides schools with a score ranging from
0100. The score takes into consideration
academic achievement, academic growth, and
other factors such as attendance and graduation rate. Once again, the schools in Eastern
Lancaster County School District fared well
compared to state and county schools.
For 20132014, Blue Ball Elementary
School (90.9) ranked fifth and Brecknock
Elementary School (88.9) ranked tenth out of
the 75 elementary schools in Lancaster
County. Blue Ball Elementary School earned
the eighth highest point gain (8.1) compared
to the 20122013 score among the 75 county
elementary schools. Blue Ball Elementary
School also scored in the top 10% of all
schools in Pennsylvania. Garden Spot Middle
School ranked sixth out of the 21 middle
schools in Lancaster County.
Educators at ELANCO have already begun
using the information provided in the SPP
reports to build on successes and to make
curricular and instructional changes necessary
to address areas of need in order to best serve
our students.
Additionally, the investment in resources
and the extraordinary efforts made by students, faculty and families is paying dividends

for the students and the ELANCO community.

A recent report demonstrates most favorable
results in our classrooms, and we are certain
that there is more good news to come.
The report highlights technology use in the
District. Last fall, teachers, students, and
administrators participated in a survey conducted by BrightBytes, a national firm that
measures technology infiltration, appropriate
use of technology in classrooms, and the
professional expertise of teachers. ELANCO
measured far above state and national trends.
As many of you know, the District provides a
personal computing device for nearly every
student. BrightBytes survey data indicates that
that technology is seamlessly functioning in
our classrooms because teachers are better
prepared than peers in other districts. A few
key data points include: 80% of students
report using the computer daily compared to
the state average of 50%, 26% of students
are asked to write online at least weekly compared to only 13% in the state, and 53% of
teachers discuss technology use at a team or
grade level meeting with colleagues at least
half the time compared to only a 31% state
average. Survey data indicates that not only
is a great deal of technology available for
student and professional use, but access to the
Internet exists in every classroom and in nearly
all homes of students. Teachers and students
are using that technology to significantly
increase the breadth and depth of learning.

New ELANCO teachers are excited for the 14-15 school year.

ELANCO School District Gives Back

This is Anthony Oberholtzer's
(PICTURED LEFT) second year in
the Work Based Learning Program at
the high school. During his time in
the program, he has earned his
drivers permit, Ready2Work
Certification from Lancaster
CareerLink, and he has now earned
a paid position at Garden Spot
Village in the Dietary Department
after completing a three-month
unpaid internship.
When students are a part of the Grassland FFA Chapter, a
large part of what they do is giving back to the community;
these are just two examples. One of the major things ELANCOs
chapter does each year is to hold the Whole Hog Fundraiser for
a local cause that is chosen by the FFA members based upon
community need at that time. Last year the fundraiser benefited The ALS Team in honor of Mr. Ed Sprecher (FUNDRAISER
PICTURED BELOW). Another thing the chapter does is to hold a
teacher luncheon each year as a chance for the FFA students to
show the teachers at the high school and middle school how
much they are appreciated. Teachers who join the FFA for
lunch give a donation and then the money that is donated is
given back to the community. This year the money was donated
to Cross Connections Ministry to purchase Christmas gifts for
local families in need.

Garden Spot Middle

Schools Student Council held
two services projects for
Quarter 2, one local and one
global. Picture number one is
the global project: Cocoa and
Cookies for Kiva. The club
made hot cocoa deliveries
during 8th periods (by donation). In addition, they held a
bake sale. Garden Spot Middle
School raised over $147.00 for
KIVA. The students pictured are
Megan Esh, Carysse Norris and
Ashley Good.

Operation Warm
Thoughts (PICTURED

clothing for the
Districts care/share
room. Pictured are:

Sarah Shirk, and
Ashley Antkowiak.

Varsity Club is made up of middle school students who are

interested in going into the health fields or helping out the
community. During the holiday season, students in this club
visited Garden Spot Village to bring them Christmas cheer. As a
part of that Christmas cheer, they handed out baked goods
and sang Christmas carols. Also, in Varsity club members donated money for a Christmas gift for a child in need as part of
the Cross Connections Ministries Christmas Project. The club is
more than happy to be helping out those in need. At the end
of the year, students in the club will be eligible for an awards
certificate for completing 10 or more service hours in the
course of the semester. Pictured below are members of The
Varsity Club at Garden Spot Village along with their advisor,
Mrs. Kathy Burke.

Because the Garden Spot High School National

Honor Society chapter considers service as one of
the five key pillars, they have undertaken multiple
service projects in the Garden Spot community
this school year. Members from the organization
volunteered at Garden Spot Village's Fall Festival, the Garden
Spot Zombie Color Run, the Garden Spot Homecoming
football game, and the Garden Spot High School volleyball
booster's concession stand. Additionally, they assembled
toiletry kits for those in the community in need, fundraised for
the ELANCO Social Services Network through a high school
dress down day, and tutored for Garden Spot freshman students.
In the spirit of the holidays, they also organized the Thanksgivingthemed "Grateful Gobblegrams", a candy-gram fundraiser for
the charity In Ian's Boots, decorated the high school for their
annual holiday-themed "Deck the Halls," and organized a door
decorating contest for the high school just prior to the winter
break. For more information about National Honor Society, visit
http://blog.elanco.org/gsnhs/.

school students from our Life
Skills ProgramNik Ulmer
(Left) and Jovahley Labady
(Center) give back to the
community at the Reuzit
Store in New Holland, as
part of their job training.

On December 22, 2014, Miss Mary Novaks 8th Grade

classes were visited by Audra Piefer, founder of Binding Love
scarves. The students learned about human trafficking both in
America and worldwide and then participated in cutting up old
clothing, which Binding Love will make into upcycled scarves.
Binding Love sends half of the proceeds of every scarf to support refuge houses in Thailand. The students enjoyed the
hands-on, real world opportunity to do something small, but
practical, in fighting human trafficking. The students, Miss
Novak, and Ms. Piefer are pictured below.

Second grade at Brecknock

Elementary adopted a family
with three children so that
each class could collect gifts
for one child. Families generously donated gifts and wrapping supplies so that the
adopted family could wrap
the gifts to help feel part of
the Christmas preparations. Gifts were provided to families in
need as part of the Cross Connections Ministries Christmas
Project.
Students in Mrs. Wendy Twaddells and Mrs. Heather Snyders
6th Grade classes (PICTURED BELOW) adopted families through
the Cross Connections Ministries Christmas Project and traveled
together to Walmart to buy presents so that other children less
fortunate could have a wonderful holiday season.

New Holland Elementary School has a tremendously

giving spirit. This year, a member of the PTO suggested
that they offer students an opportunity to give during
the holiday season through a Giving Tree. Students
were asked to bring in $5.00 gift cards from specific
local businesses (i.e. Yoders, Walmart, McDonalds, Sheetz, JB
Zimmermans, etc) to assist local families in need. The school
collected 70 gift cards, and these were attached to Christmas
gifts that were purchased through the Cross Connection Ministries Christmas Project. Additionally, New Holland Elementary
will again host the Art Gala Club, (SEE PG. 8 OF NEWSLETTER)
whereby the participating 2nd-6th Graders will paint two
paintings [one for their families and one for an art auction on
May 8th]. The proceeds from the Art Auction will be split
between the Cross Connections Ministry Summer
Lunch Program and the Conner M. Holland Foundation that assists families with pediatric cancer.
Last year, the Art Auction earned $1,049.00.

Art students and members of the Bible Study

Club, Awakening
(PICTURED LEFT), created
Christmas cards with
beautiful verses this year for
the residents of Garden
Spot Village.
