Psalm 14

The fool says in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no
one who does good. The Lord looks down from heaven on the sons of men to see if there are
any who understand, any who seek God. All have turned aside, they have together become
corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. (1-3)
Atheism can be expressed in more than one way, but the end result is the same corruption
Some declare atheism as a creed arrogantly proclaiming they have the special knowledge
that God does not exist, or that He was existed once but somehow no longer exists
This belief defies the obvious evidence of all creation, and the continued evidence of Gods
sustenance of the created order
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands; day after
day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge (Psalm 19:1-2)
Others express atheism by deed not as an announcement of belief, but as a lifestyle of selfassertion while ignoring the revealed truth of Gods Word
While not denying Gods existence and giving lip service to Him, these atheists do not trust
in the Lord with all their hearts but lean on their own understanding (Proverbs 3:5)
Jesus confronted this attitude and behavior by quoting the prophet Isaiah: These people honor
Me with their lips, while their heart is far from Me (Matthew 15:8, Isaiah 29:13)
Regardless of the form of atheism, the attitude is one of foolishness and leads to corruption
The believer would tend to think the first verse pertains to others (foolishness, denial of God,
and corruption), yet the next verse teaches this to be the plight of all mankind
Paul quoted this passage as he taught the all-inclusiveness of sin (Romans 3:10-11), and
concludes for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23)
Note that God looks upon mankind to see if there are any who understand, who seek God
Yet the scripture teaches that all mankind (in our unredeemed state) have turned aside . . .
together become corrupt . . . there is no one who does good, not even one
Paul went on to explain the Good News of Jesus death and resurrection, providing atonement
for our sin of atheism (by creed or deed), forgiveness, and new life in Christ (Romans 3 8)
Both Old and New Testaments teach that God reveals Himself to those who seek Him
o If with all your heart you truly seek Me, you will surely find Me (Jeremiah 29:13)
o Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:13, Acts 2:21)
The opposite of the foolishness of atheism is the wisdom that comes from seeking after God
Wisdoms instruction is to fear the Lord, and humility comes before honor (Proverbs 15:33)
Will evildoers never learn those who devour my people as men eat bread and who do not call
on the Lord? There they are, overwhelmed with dread, for God is present in the company of
the righteous. You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor, but the Lord is their refuge. Oh,
that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the Lord restores the fortunes of His
people, let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad! (4-7)
Evildoers will never learn unless their hardened hearts experience repentance and
forgiveness

 For those who do not call on the Lord, their lives are devalued and overwhelmed with
dread
But God is present in the company of the righteous and the righteous are those who
renounce atheism both by creed and deed, and call upon the name of the Lord
