1.

Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

In class we discussed the types of actors. Trained professionals, extras, etc.
This film portrayed a good amount of the types of actors. The extras would
be the people who arent always in the film such as the little person in the
dream sequence. A nonprofessional actor would be the woman actress.
They explain that she has had only one roll other than this, but with a
credible director. She wasnt convinced of her talent. We also talked about
independent films. I thought this film was interesting because it was an
independent film about making independent films. If you can make a low
budget film look good, then I guess you probably have a really good
production crew.

2.

The article I found was about Catherine Keener and her acting in Capote.
The article talks about how she isnt your typical Hollywood Diva. Shes an
actress with softer and lighter features. She claims to not like the types of
movie sets where you just go on set, do your thing and leave. She prefers
the sets where there is a community. Keener tends to decide which movies
she wants to be in from the director. If she likes the director, then the odds
are that the director will pick like-minded people to be in their films. She
claims to be a late bloomer in the film industry. She wasnt really in anything
good until she was a grown adult, but she claims to be happy that she is in
better movies.

3. Apply the article to the film screened in class.

The article talks about how Catherine Keener is a little bit soft, which is
evident in Living in Oblivion. Her character in the film is a little timid, and she
isnt really secure with her acting ability. In the film, Keener also doesnt get
along with her costar in the dream sequence, which is causing hostility on
set. In the article she talks about the importance of having good
relationships with the people she is working with. I think the director picked
her for these reasons.
4.

Write a critical analysis of the film.

I thought the film was an interesting look at the independent film industry.
How to deal with even miniscule issues on set. Whenever I think of movie
making, I always feel like it would be so easy to become a director. As you
watch this movie, you see that everything that happens is calculated. You
never think that you rarely see the back of someones head in a movie, but
since they made a scene out of it in the film, its thought provoking. I thought
it was interesting how the entire film was a dream sequence, but somehow
each dream sequence had elements of the last one in it. That must have
been a technique to make the film progress without cutting back and forth
from dream to reality. Living in Oblivion was a fun look at all aspects of film:
budget, annoying actors, incompetent crew, even craft services.
