Organizational Change & Leadership

1. Introduction, objectives and contents
Organizational life is characterized by change, both emergent and planned. A constantly changing
internal and external context requires flexibility, adaptation and innovation. This can take the
shape of organizational development and incremental changes, but also of radical change and
redesign.
In the course Organizational Change & Leadership, attention will be paid to the nature of change,
how change influences and is affected by organizational aspect systems, forms of change,
leadership of change, and models for planned change. You will learn concepts and models to
describe and theories to analyze change in terms of context, content and process. Next to theory,
research findings and practical examples will help develop your understanding. In addition to
diagnosing change, attention will be paid to designing or developing change strategies and to the
corresponding roles of change agents.
Learning goals:
Upon completion of the course the student is able to:
1. describe relevant organizational change concepts, models and theory;
2. analyze the ways change comes about;
3. understand the dynamics that organizational change processes entail;
4. develop arguments for choosing a change strategy type
5. design recommendations for effectively leading organizational change by change leaders and
other agents.
Content
The course covers the following themes:
the changing context of organizations,
the type and nature of the changes,
the manner in which organizations react to this,
the factors that make change in organizations so difficult,
the dynamics of change processes,
the influence of strategy, structure, culture and power on change processes,
(change) leader styles, competencies, and behaviour
the influence of managers and leaders on change processes,
the role of consultants in change processes,
different types of change strategies and intervention possibilities,
the contribution of academic research on all of these themes.

Method and organization

The course Organizational Change & Leadership consists of 5 lectures (including 1 lecture in which
you can ask questions) and 3 tutorials that alternate each other (see Nestor), but also of self-tuition
and working on assignments in teams.
The lectures support the learning process by clarifying the outlines of the textbook. The structure
of the textbook will be roughly followed, but the lectures will also discuss research and practical
situations to explain concepts and perspectives in the literature and make them comprehensible.
Additional articles may also be discussed. The slides will become available on Nestor soon after the
lecture. Some illustrations may not be available in the slides due to copyright issues. Slides will not
be available beforehand; lecturers make adjustments even shortly before the start of a lecture.
The contents of the tutorials are based on one or more preceding lectures. Your individual
preparation for each tutorial consists of completing two assignments . Your answers on these
assignments will be discussed in the tutorials. The tutorial thus provides you with feedback that
you may use in writing your team assignments for this course. Eventually, you build a teamportfolio with all six assignments.
You individually prepare tutorials. The contents and assignments of the tutorials follow the
outlines of the textbook and lectures. You will elaborate on different themes, usually based on a
case. You will be challenged to point out the case problems, to use concepts and models in
systematically and adequately describing these problems, to use theory in sharply analysing and
evaluating and in providing possible directions for addressing and intervening in a change
situation. You will bring the assignment answers to the tutorial in the form of a hard-copy Word
document. (= two copies of each of the two assignments).
3

During a tutorial you will be asked to give your answer to a question, and you will provide
commentaries to others and join in a group discussion. You will thus participate in dialogue and
debate and will provide each other with feedback.
You use the feedback and ideas to correct/enhance/further elaborate the answers on the
assignments that you have to hand these in as a team in one of the following weeks to be graded
(see section 8). By handing in these assignments as a team you build a portfolio consisting of the
corrected and upgraded assignments. Based on the quality of this team portfolio you obtain your
team grade. More detailed information can also be found in Dutch in the box under section 7.

an excellent participation- bonus of 0.5 written exam point is granted to those who
manage to show excellent participation in all the three tutorials (see the box in
section 7 for the detailed requirements).
freeriding is not allowed. A team can report such behaviour to one of the instructors.
After consulting with an instructor, a team can unanimously decide to exclude a
freeriding member provided they have serious reasons to do so. When you get
excluded from a team, your individual grade for the team portfolio will be a 1.
Last but not least, the two grades (team and individual) will remain valid for the
following academic year (2015-2016), but in no way guaranteed thereafter.

7. Participation in lectures and tutorials

It is highly recommended to follow the lectures and the tutorials.
However, it is your individual decision whether you do so or not.
The lectures introduce you to the textbook and articles and help you prepare for the exam.
They add to the materials on Nestor. See section 8 for the lecture planning.
The tutorials allow you to discuss how you may use the concepts, models and theories in
practice. The goal of the class discussion is to critically yet constructively evaluate different
answering possibilities on the case questions. In this way you deepen your understanding of
the case and of how to apply relevant theories. The tutorials enable you to gather feedback
on case assignments and find inspiration for the team portfolio. The box below offers a
detailed explanation in Dutch.

Werkcolleges

9. Individual and team portfolio assignments

The assignments and corresponding cases will be placed on Nestor under the button Cases and
assignments. Under that button you will find the materials arranged per tutorial.
Again, when you choose to enrol in the tutorials, the following procedure applies:
Each individual student prepares the two assignments for each of the three tutorials.
Each individual student joins in answering and discussing the case questions during the
tutorial.
Each individual student brings two copies of their answers to the assignments to class.
In the assignments use data displays (tables, schemas, figures) to present case information in a
structured and meaningful way. In your answers build on and explicitly refer to these displays.
Hand-in procedure for the assignments constituting the team portfolio
A portfolio with the corrected, upgraded, and extended assignments is built during the course.
You hand assignments in as a team before the specified deadlines, both digitally and hard copy:
You upload a Word document on Nestor (button left menu). A plagiarism scanner
will be used and the portfolio assignments will be archived.
A hard-copy - version is handed in for the instructors at the IM&S secretarial desk
(room DUI434)
Deadlines:
Thursday, week number 18, April 30, before 16.00 hours (I and II)
Thursday, week number 22, May 28, before 16.00 hours (III and IV)
Monday, week number 25, June 15, before 16.00 hours (V and VI)
