Executive Summary
The purpose of the 360-degree survey was to assess my pro-activity as a school
leader and the perception others have about my effectiveness leading a school. The
individuals chosen to conduct the survey consisted of: parents; teachers; classified staff;
office managers; principals, and directors. These individuals are part of my daily
interactions in a school setting, they recognize my limitations as well as my areas of
competency; therefore, they can provide information that can guide my development as a
leader. As stated by McCreight, it is important to self assess in order to grow as an
individual.
While generating the questions, I was a bit self-conscious about the responses,
since the questions are immensely personal; these questions forced the individuals to
scrutinize my ethics, principles, and leadership skills. According to Hendricks and
Ludeman, for many people the most difficult thing in communication is getting and
giving honest feedback. Yet the most valuable commodity in the world. Although this
form of survey was written feedback, the end result was equally effective as oral
communication feedback. A total of 78 individuals participated in the survey, the survey
consisted of 20 questions in which individuals selected from four different options that
range form strongly agree to strongly disagree, the questions focused on concepts on the
six CPSEL Standards. I included an approximate of three to four questions for each of
the CPSEL standards; each question included was created with the intent to improve my
leadership skills.
I am extremely pleased with the responses attained from my colleagues and
parents; as shown in the graph below, most responses fell under the category of strongly

agree to agree with a few responses under disagree option. Although most responses were
favorable, I am my toughest critic and feel I have yet to acquire knowledge and
understanding on some areas of the CPSEL standards. After analyzing the data I was
able to discover two of the CPSEL standards that received the lowest scores; Instructional
Leadership and Management and Learning Environment. Interestingly enough I do agree
that these areas are some that I need to focus on, I have been in this position as a principal
for a little over a year and being an instructional leader is one of the most important
aspects to ensure that all students receive a high quality educational program that will
prepare them for the complexities of the 21st century.
Furthermore, I provided a space for the individuals surveyed to include additional
comments, a few of the comments included stated the following, Having been placed at
two school locations with completely different school cultures are a challenge for any
administrator. Ms. Oregel has established professional learning environments that have
not yet resulted in collective professional learning. While great strides have been made
in these areas, this will require on-going effort and intentional long-term planning so a
culture of learning will continue even after she leaves. An additional comment included
in the survey was, This is an area of strength for Ms. Oregel as she has taken time to
analyze and reflect about her current school communities. Since they are both vastly
different but both serve economically and linguistically challenged families, she has
quickly adjusted how she works in each of the neighborhoods. In addition, Ms. Oregel is
learning how diversity is an asset that is often underutilized. Over the course of the last
year, she has also been helping her staffs understand the importance of working with

diverse communities and how instruction often needs to be done with culturally relevant
and responsive pedagogy in mind.

After gathering and analyzing the data, my next steps are to continue to develop
my skills and address my limitations, in hopes to one day become an ethical leader that
will equitably lead schools towards a vision of transformation. Although receiving
feedback from others could be uncomfortable, as stated by Hendricks and Ludeman, it is
the most valuable commodity in the world. The information provided encourages and
motivates others to become better individuals and provokes a reaction that enables us to
continue learning and enhance our knowledge.
Conducting this survey allowed me to truly reflect on my practices and plan for
next steps that will help me grow as an effective administrator. My next steps as I reflect
on the CPSEL that I will focus on are: Preparing a professional development plan with
the instructional leaders, utilize student assessment to plan the PD, collaborate with
instructional staff to review student assessment, and plan lesson study with the
instructional staff.
