In the two portfolio sessions this semester, you will be involved in activities which prepare you for Phase 2. The first session focuses on your progress in learning to conduct a medical interview and also enables you to obtain feedback from you tutor on your portfolio and your reflective pieces. The second session is devoted to a formal review of your portfolio Session 1 By the end of the session, the students should have 1. Considered their own and their clinical partners approaches to learning 2. Explored some of the key issues which may arise /or have arisen from their experiences in learning to conduct a Medical Interview 3. Used the reflective structure to aid their reflection on this process 4. Shared experiences and best practice with colleagues 5. Clarified their understanding of what is required for their learning journals 6. Begun to prepare their portfolios for review in the second session of this semester There are four aspects to this session Evaluation of approaches to learning Reflection on issues raised by the Medical Interview Support for Learning Journals Feedback on portfolios and reflective pieces 1 Approaches to Learning An important aspect of the Medical Interview is an ability to recall knowledge in the correct context. How you learn is crucial to this and also has an impact on your relationship with clinical partner, especially as partners give each other feedback on their medical interview sessions. It is therefore important for each member of your pair to have an idea of the learning approaches adopted by the other. The brief questionnaire on Approaches to Learning will be used as a basis for this 2. Reflection on issues raised by medical interview Many important concerns are inevitably raised by you experiences in learning how to conduct a medical interview. Through group discussion and by working in pairs you will be able to explore these issues, which will support your reflection and development through your learning journal. The important point here is that you may encounter problems and challenges, but how to you overcome them and progress further.
3. Support for learning journals
You have already been introduced to learning journals in a lecture recently and a copy of the lecture is available on Medlea. You will be completing two learning journals, one concerned with their SSC and the other with Medical Interviewing. During this portfolio session, your tutor will be able to give you further advice and feedback on your learning journal 4. Feedback on portfolios and reflective pieces This is the last opportunity you have for feedback before their review, which will be held in the second portfolio session of the semester. Please note if your portfolio was satisfactory at review at the end of year 1 does not necessarily mean that it will be at the end of year 2. It was, after all satisfactory for the end of their first year, when an understanding of reflection was all that was necessary; you should have moved on!. Session 2 Review of portfolio This is a review of your portfolio over the whole of phase 1 and will be covered in detail in a lecture event on the 5 th February at 3 pm. Please ensure that you attend this lecture, as it will contain essential information for your preparation for this review.
