Biography
ChristopherSmall(bornChristopherNevilleCharlesSmall)wasborninPalmerstonNorth,New
Zealandtoadentistandformerschoolteacher,andwastheyoungestofthreechildren.[1]
HisearlyschooleducationtookplaceattheTerraceEndandRussellStreetPrimarySchools(193239),
PalmerstonNorthBoys'HighSchool(19401)andWanganuiCollegiateSchool(194244).Between
theyears1945and1952heattendedOtagoUniversityandthenVictoriaUniversityCollege(now
knownasVictoriaUniversityofWellington).HetaughtatHorowhenuaCollege(atthesametime
workingatMorrowProductionsLtdmakingeducationalanimatedfilms)in19538,andatWaihi
Collegein195960.
In1960hewasawardedaNewZealandGovernmentBursaryandin1961hespentayeartravellingin
theUK,beforestudyingcompositioninLondonwithPriaulxRainier,wherehealsohadcontactwith
BernardRands,LuigiNonoandWitoldLutoslawski.AfterhisstudieshestayedinEngland,wherehe
taughtaschools,includingAnsteyCollegeofEducationinBirmingham.HebecameSeniorLecturerin
MusicatEalingCollegeofHigherEducationinLondon(197186)andhealsotaughtatDartington
CollegeofArtsin1979.Between1977and1986hewasAdjunctProfessoroftheHistoryofMusicat
SyracuseUniversityLondonCentre,andaTutorinMusictothesummerschooloftheBEdcourseof
SussexUniversitybetween19814.[1][2]
Heretiredfromteachingin1986andmovedtoSitges,Spain,wherehelivedwithhispartnerNeville
Braithwaite(aJamaicanborndancer,singer,andyouthworker)whomhemarriedin2006.Duringhis
timeinSpain,SmallconductedCatalanchoirsandwasvisitedregularlybypeoplefrombothEuropeand
