:Introduction

The halogens are the

elements in group 7 of the
periodic table, like chlorine,
bromine and iodine. Their
.ions are called halide ions
You can test to see if a
solution contains chloride,
bromide or iodide ions by
.using silver nitrate
If a silver nitrate solution is
added to a sample of water
containing halide ions the
silver halide is precipitated.
This is because the silver
halides are all insoluble in
.water
Silver fluoride (AgF) does not
form precipitate as it is
soluble so this test proves

little except that it isnt

.chloride, bromide and iodide

:Aim/objective
To investigate the presence
of halide ions in different
solutions by reacting it with
acidified silver nitrate
.solution

:Material and reagents

2.

3 test tubes
2 beakers

3. Silver

nitrate
4. Halide ions
5. Nitric acid
Details of the steps :
1. Take a test tube stand
2. Wash three test tubes and
make sure they are cleaned
3. Label the test tubes A,B and C
carrying different solutions of
halide ions .
4. We added in all three test
tubes different halide salts
5. The test tube A contains
chloride
6. The test tube B contains
bromide
7. The test tube C contains
iodide
8. The all three test tubes dilute
water was added
9. Take silver nitrate solution in a
beaker and slowly add few drops
in to each test tubes one by one
10. In each test tube the colour
was shown

Test tube A white colour

Test tube B creamy colour
Test tube C yellow colour
This test tube has to be done in
solution . if you start from a solid it
must first be dissolved in pure
water .
The solution of silver nitrate is
acidified by dilute nitric acid .
(remember : silver nitrate + dilute
nitric acid . )
The nitric acid react with and
removes other ions that might also
give confusing precipitate with silver
nitrate .

AgCl + MNO3
AgNO3 + MBr
AgBr + MNO3
AgNO3 + MI AgI

The role of nitric acid in this

experiment is removing other ions
present in the solution that might
give a confusing precipitate the
.silver nitrate
The possible errors can be caused in
this experiment in obtaining accurate
. results is that AgNO3 is old stored
Halogens can be useful in killing
bacteria in drinking water and it can
be harmful in other wild life in food
.chain

:Conclusion
The presence of halide ions
.confirmed
