Virtual Plant Tour

Capacity of the wastewater treatment plant
Plants capacity is changed in weathers and two main weather conditions are
considered:
1. When the weather is dry weather the capacity of the plant is 8.9 mgd (9 mgd
a round value) and a maximum flow of 19.1 mdg (19 mgd a round value).
2. But when the weather is wet the plant can be operated to a maximum
capacity of 45 mgd.
Capacity of the plant is dependent on the Influent Screw Pumps. Each pump is of
the capacity of the 15 mgd and there are four pumps available. Normally one screw
pump is in service and in wet weather three pumps may be required.

Peak Demand
Peak demand is in the wet weather and there is a requirement that the plant must
be operated at a capacity of 45 mgd, and this demand is met when the plant has an
operation with three screw pumps.

Change in Capacity

Capacity of the plant is 15 mgd if one screw pump is operational and this is
only if the intake is less than or equal to 15 mgd. As it is stated that in dry
weather the plant design is supported to a maximum of 19 mgd if there is a
rise of intake flow more than 15 mgd then the plant management have to
operate with two screw pumps where both of the pumps are operational with
less utilization in a total.
If we increase the plant capacity from 19 mgd to 25 or 30 mgd then we just
have to operate with the two screw pumps. But if the inflow is less than or
equal to 15 mgd then we should operate with one screw pump. There will be
a less utilization of the screw pumps if the inflow in more than 15 mgd but
less than 30 mgd (when two screw pumps are operational).
In wet weather we do have a capacity 45 mgd which can be met with three
screw pumps operational.

If the plant management want to increase the capacity more than 45 mgd
then there are four screw pumps but all the facilities after the screw pumps
has to enhanced like
o Bar screen and mechanical rake
o Screening washer
o Grit removal
o Grit Pump
And many more like
o V Notch Weirs
o Tertiary Treatment Sand Filters
o Garbage trucking facility and so on.
But till the 60 mdg there are 4 influent screw pumps available but it is not as
much reliable of being operational for all the screw pumps.
If the plant management decide to enhance the capacity of the wet weather
to more than 60 mgd then the management straight have to purchase more
influent screw pumps and to invest in all the remaining plant machinery to
enhance the capacities at each and every level.
